A
fter weeks of rain, the first really glorious day of the Spring greeted the first Wealden Mobility OffRoad Mobility Scooter Demonstration Day. The rolling hills of Brightling Park provided the setting and the inevitable mud provided the challenge. Specialist off road scooters are designed to cope with most things that nature can throw at them and so the challenge was accepted. From Lincolnshire came the Overlander 4 from TerrainHopper. With direct drive 4x4 capability and an independent suspension, the Overlander is a full blown ‘go anywhere’ machine. As driven by one of the attendees, it was more than happy taking on the softest of soft ground for an “up to its axles” half mile spin around Brightling Park! It coped admirably with the mud and even crossed fallen trees with ease. If you are looking for a machine that will take you to all parts of your estate, up steep slopes and through valleys and streams then look no further. At the end of the session, the guys from TerrainHopper even had us climbing up, and down, a steep flight of steps safely and always in control. The two versions on display, one bright yellow and the other in orange, had a wide range of accessories including a winch and included the latest LED lighting systems making them stand out in all conditions. The main rival to the Overlander is the Horizon Mayan. This formidable machine is the world’s only 3 phase AC powered off road scooter with a terrific top speed of 15 mph. The high torque is invaluable for off road work where the Mayan can plough through the muddiest and roughest of conditions without any loss of power. Having a narrower chassis than the TerrainHopper, it is a machine that can equally be used on the pavements of Heathfield, where its speed is restricted, as well as the muddiest parts of Brightling Park. The Mayan can be fully specified and, like the TerrainHopper, has a wide range of seating and controller options. On the day, everyone (including the What’s On editor) was free to have a go on each of the scooters and really get the feel of them. One attendee, Mr Hayes, told us that he “never had so much fun” as he sped off on the Mayan along a muddy path and off into the distance. Even Gardie and Di Grissell were seen speeding off, presumably to explore parts of the estate that they hadn’t seen for weeks. Between the lovely weather, refreshments and good company the day was a resounding success. Anybody interested in the machines or wishing to see them at future events should call Wealden Mobility on 01435 864155.

Open Evening at Saint Mary’s Clinic
S
aint Mary’s Clinic recently hosted an open evening showcasing their amazing new cosmeceutical facial product range, created by medical professionals to give you real results. The evening also featured demonstrations of their fabulous new treatments including skin peeling and derma rolling. Guests enjoyed champagne and canapes and had the chance to speak to the clinic’s aesthetic therapists about the new treatments. There was also an opportunity to win some fabulous new products in a prize draw. Another new product showcased during the evening was Skinade, this offers a different approach to skin care that works from the inside out. The unique ‘Patent pending’ formulation of Skinade has been designed to deliver essential nutrients in a liquid formation promoting high absorption and bioavailability. As we grow older, the collagen matrix can become depleted and damaged through various environmental and aged related biochemical changes that cause wrinkles, fine lines, dry, blemished or thinning skin. Skin creams are only able to target the external layer but Skinade works from within on both the inner and outer layers to help both collagen formulation and skin function. I have been trying out the Skinade drink for the last week. The drink is pleasant to take and has natural flavours of peach and mangosteen. While it was too early to gauge the full effect, I have noticed that my skin seems softer and more hydrated, I also seem to have more energy. I am looking forward to soon reporting the loss of fine lines and wrinkles. What’s On Editor .....

Jimmy Doherty Jimmy is one of the UK’s best known farmers. His journey started over 10 years ago when he took on a leasehold of a 100 acre farm just outside Ipswich which was followed in a BBC2 series called ‘Jimmy’s Farm’. Jimmy hasn’t looked back since and ‘Jimmy’s Farm’ now has an award winning restaurant, a nature trail, a butterfly house and holds numerous science and food festivals throughout the year. His recent TV credits include ‘Food Unwrapped’, ‘Human Swarm’, ‘Easter Egg’s Live’, ‘The Secret Millions’ and ‘Jamie and Jimmy’s Food Fight Club’ on Channel 4.
University where he researched for a Doctorate in Entomology, set up an insect laboratory and taught Animal Ecology and Animal Philosophy to undergraduate students.
Jimmy’s other TV credits include two series of the hit show ‘Jimmy’s Food Factory’ and ’Jimmy and the Wild Honey Hunters’ both for BBC1, ‘Jimmy’s Global Harvest’ for BBC2 and ‘Crop to Shop – Jimmy’s Supermarket Secrets’ for BBC1.
Jimmy has written three books and has a number of free range food products called ‘Jimmy’s Farmers Range’ including a range of chicken on sale at Ocado and a range of turkeys. Last year his turkey won ‘Best Christmas Premium Product’ at the ‘British Turkey Awards 2012’.
Jimmy has always been passionate about nature and farming. By the time he was 16, he was the youngest ever Assistant Entomologist at the Mole Hall Wildlife Park in Walden. After gaining a degree in Zoology, Jimmy worked at the Entomology Department at London’s Natural History Museum before moving on to Coventry
Jimmy and Michaela were married on Saturday, 22 August 2009. The reception was held at their farm in Suffolk. They have two daughters named Molly Rose and Cora Mae.

What’s On Magazine spoke exclusively to Jimmy as he films his new series of Food Unwrapped which comes out in June. Jimmy, we originally saw you take over and start your own pig farm from scratch. That has obviously grown enormously now so perhaps people are unaware of how much now goes on at the farm. Yes it has been 10 years, we still have the pigs and we also produce 8 to 10,000 turkeys a year, we have cattle and sheep plus another thing I am really keen on is the educational side of things. We have our ‘park farm’ where people can come around and see the animals and learn about them with our educational programmes. Our farmshop has increased the butchery side of things and we have recently opened a restaurant on the farm which is proving to be very popular. We have a great team of about 30 full time workers and I am doing things like working with the head chef on the new menu and I have also recently built a tropical butterfly house because I love the ecology side of farming. I spend a lot of time planting
026_May026.indd 4
vegetable seeds in the vegetable garden which is another favourite of mine. When I am on my filming trips around the world I pick up unusual varieties of plant seed and bring them back to try, we recently had some sweetcorn and maize from Mexico and Chilli’s which I picked up in India. It’s not without it’s problems though, last year I spent a whole day sewing Pumpkin and giant Sunflower seeds only to find a day later that a mouse had got into the greenhouse overnight and eaten the whole lot. What is your wife Michaela’s role at the farm? She is basically my boss and runs the place when I am not there. She over sees the restaurant and the wholesale deals that we do plus the day to day running of the farm. She obviously also has our two children to look after as well. Do you ever worry about it getting too big? I think we have got to a nice size now, so we have regular meetings and think tank groups to find out what our visitors like to see and what they are looking for. Families
are obviously looking for activities for the children so we are always looking at that but also the sort of food they like to eat as well. For us it’s building something sustainable and it is very interesting that we have a lot of farmers come to us and say they would like to do something similar. That has lead us to think about setting up some satellite farms based on ours, may be in the West country or perhaps the Midlands. What proportion of your time is spent filming compared to being at the farm? It depends on the season but probably about 60% of my time is spent at the farm and the rest of the time filming. Of course sometimes I am actually filming at the farm which is perfect. Are you working exclusively for Channel 4 now? Yes I was with the BBC for a few years but I have been with Channel 4 for about four years now, so everything that we do is for their programming. How much input do you get into the type of programmes you film? It’s a mixture really, there are occasions
27/04/2014 20:49:08
when I can pitch a programme to them that I particularly want to do or it might be an idea that is grown from the production company. Either way I like to have a lot of input to help tell the story. The subject matter usually tends to be science, natural history or food production and I have an interest in all those subjects, particularly the food science area of it. I like to farm in a very particular way, it’s all free range and traditional farming techniques. I try not to stamp my opinion onto anything we do but just show the subject clearly so that people can make an informed decision as to whether they agree with a particular production technique. You once said the filming wasn’t very glamorous, is that still the case? Yes, it’s still in and out of airports and hotels and lots of hours in mini buses, people often assume it’s a glamorous thing to do but there is a lot of hard work involved. The good thing about it, is that you do get to dip into people’s lives and specialties. You can be in a factory which just makes curry powder one minute and the next minute you can be talking to a world expert on fungi, or standing in a field with a group of Indian rice growers. It’s looking through these windows into peoples lives that I really enjoy and I think it is a real priviledge. What have you got coming up this year? We have got a new series of Food
Unwrapped which I am filming now and is due to be broadcast in June and July. This has been a really interesting programme to make and it looks behind the doors of how our day to day food is made. I have also got a programme coming out about global diets. Again this should be coming out around July time. The programme focuses on who has the best and worse diets around the world. Are you still having your live music festival at the farm? We started with a live music event called ‘Harvest at Jimmy’s but that has now developed into a number of different events which we hold at the farm. We have a comedy night once a month and a science and nature festival. Our biggest event is the Sausage and Beer Festival which is from the 26th & 27th July. We have sausage makers from around the country with beer producers and of course our hilarious sausage eating competition. We then have bands playing during the evening - Dodgy is playing on the Saturday 26th with Matt Cardle on the Sunday. This month (May) we have a Food & Drink Feast (May 24 - 26) and another popular event later in July is our Theatre in the Forest which begins on 15th July. You have written three books so far, do you have any plans for any more perhaps an autobiography?
I think I will wait a few years before the autobiography but ,yes, I am very interested in writing more books and especially in the childrens book sector. I would like to develop a connection between childrens education and the food production stuff, so that children from an early age become associated with how food is actually produced. Do you enjoy the ornamental side of growing? Yes, I am also interested in that side, in fact I have just been down to visit the seed bank at Kew Gardens and I spend a lot of time planting seeds. I am hooked on growing radishes at the moment and I am astounded by how quickly they grow. I am always trying to get a multi use out of a plant, so for example with the radishes I am not only interested in the radish bulb but also the leaves which I can use for salads.

We were over in Hailsham last week doing the weekly shop and decided to pop into Callenders for a spot of lunch. And why not? A two course lunch is only £6.50. “You’d pay that for a sandwich in some places”, the Mrs laughed. Callenders has become a firm favourite for us over the last four years, for lunch and dinner. It’s the perfect place for an evening out with friends. All the food is locally grown or produced and you can really taste the freshness. The pan seared liver and bacon is truly special, this is top quality bistro style cooking, prepared and plated with the minimum of fuss. The slow roast pork belly is amazing and the roast duck is a particular favourite of mine. The chips are a fine example of how good simple cooking can be, maris pipers, hand cut and cooked three times, golden, crispy and fluffy in the middle. With this kind of attention to detail they deserve to be famous.

Battle
the Heart of 1066 Country...
Battle Medieval Fair 25th and 26th May
Medieval Madness is coming to Battle again - the costumes are being dusted down; the maypole has been woken from its yearly hibernation ready for 2 days of merrie maypoling; the exhibitors, entertainers and good weather have all been booked! The entertainment is a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery. There will be talks by Hands on History and an opportunity to see and try on mediaeval amour and weaponry. Battle’s very own Knights of the Realm will be strutting their stuff with boo-ing and cheering to encourage them in their chivalrous endeavours. On Monday the May Queen and Dancers from Battle and Langton School will lead the parade down the High Street at 1 pm accompanied by the Section 5 Drummers. After the crowning of the May Queen at about 1.30 the children will demonstrate how maypoling should be done! 1066 Falconry will be there and 1066 Lacemakers will be demonstrating the delicate art of lacemaking. Our potters will be offering an opportunity for young ones to try throwing a pot, and there will be games and facepainting for the young and the young at heart. All this plus stalls offering tempting trinkets and foods! There is no admission charge and all monies raised go directly to help fund the event which is organised by volunteers from the Battle Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by many local businesses and individuals.
Aurelie & Rose are celebrating their six month anniversary this month with a huge range of new accessories for Spring/Summer. Situated right by the famous Battle Abbey, their beamed boutique is crammed with gorgeous jewellery, scarves, bags and purses as well as unusual cards, candles and bath and beauty products, much with a ‘vintage’ feel. Hawkhurst
O
n the oldest part of Hawkhurst stands The parish church of St Laurence. This area is to the south end of the village and is known as the Moor, which is the older part of Hawkhurst . It is likely that a church has stood on this site since 1100, or even earlier when Hawkhurst belonged to the Abbot of Wye. After the Battle of Hastings William the Conqueror gave the village to the Abbot of Battle. From the cross roads in the village centre carry on down to the Moor, which is on the Hurst Green road. This area near the church is the old village green, and is surrounded mostly by old Kent weatherboard shops and houses. The Great East Window of the Church was built about 1350 and has been described as one of the finest pieces of architecture in the country. Most of the rest of the church dates from around 1450, when the nave was lengthened and raised, the aisles, porches and tower added, and it took on its present appearance. Hawkhurst’s history is dominated by the notorious Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers who terrorised the village and the surrounding area between 1735 and 1749. The first reference to this gang was in 1735, as the ‘Holkhourst Genge’. They were the most notorious of the Kent gangs, and were feared for miles around their home base in the village of Hawkhurst . Their headquarters was the ‘Oak and Ivy Inn’, which is still a thriving public house in the village. The Hawkhurst Gang ranged the full length of the South Coast, and
Crossroads of the Weald...
were perfectly situated for working the Marshes which began a few miles away at Newenden. It has been said that when needed for a smuggling run, 500 mounted and armed men could be assembled within the hour. They were also only 13 miles from Rye , another favourite haunt of the gang. It was quite common for them to be seen at the Mermaid Inn, where they would sit and drink with a loaded pistol on the table. They looked after their own, but were totally ruthless with anyone who interfered or crossed their path. In 1944 a German flying bomb fell in the churchyard, and caused considerable damage, and the church was put out of action until 1957. Part of the flying bomb can be seen on the south side at the back of the church. Standing at the cross roads in the village centre Hawkhurst has a pretty white boarded ‘Colonade’ of shops making the village centre and is now also seeing an interesting selection of shops opening up on the Cranbrook Road.

Don’t just take our word for it … “Following the storms of early 2014, a substantial Corsican Pine had begun to list dangerously in our garden, threatening a deep pond and a boundary fence. Nick Danson quickly came to pronounce judgment (“That’s got to come out”), and advise on talking to the local tree officer. As soon as we were given the go-ahead, Nick rearranged his schedule and was on site the next day. With NO access to our garden, Nick had to chop the tree up and carry everything through the hallway – he did so cleanly and quickly. We have recommended Nick in the past and would obviously do so again.” Mr & Mrs Brooker, Old Town, Hastings.

Cutting Garden snippets May… a busy time in the garden, as the days
lengthen further, and grow warmer. Half-hardies can go out once the risk of frost has passed. We grow lots of Cosmos – this year we are growing the shorter ‘Antiquity’, in shades of pink, plus the usual tall white, for mountains of lovely flowers for jam jars and vases. Also Amaranthus, especially bright green, giving us lovely velvety tassels, plus Zinnias and Antirrhinums, These are planted in between the bulbs, now that they are finished, so making good use of the ground. It pays to weed and mulch the soil first, and water- in the module raised seedlings.
More annuals are planted out to give a succession of flowers to cut… Ammi, Dill, Orlaya, Cornflowers, and also some of the shorter Sunflowers bred for cutting. Our Ranunculus are proving to be a real success. Masses of flowers from just a little corm planted in the polytunnel beds. They last well as a cut flower, and come in a lovely range of colours.
Happy growing and cutting! Sussex Cutting Garden. See our advertisement on P.62
A London Garden Square Designed for RHS Chelsea Flower Show
A
ward-winning developer London Square is sponsoring a garden at the 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show – with a design for a very special garden square by Gold Medal winner Jo Thompson. Jo Thompson will be designing the corner of a garden square, with beautiful trees, a place to sit and art to admire, with a mix of tradition and contemporary elements. The London Square garden will feature a sculpture that is also a seat – a piece of art with tendrils that turn and twist through the garden. Flowing, organic sweeps of fine steel rise out of the planting to make a structure that becomes a bench. White standard roses – a rare sight in Chelsea gardens – will be part of a colour palette of green and white, with hints of pale apricot irises linking with a cream coloured marbled sculpture by Frederic Chevarin. Splashes of
cream will also come from the chalky white bark of three majestic silver birches (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii). The design for the fresh garden at RHS Chelsea was inspired by London Square’s exclusive new square of magnificent townhouses in Fulham – reflecting the tradition of the capital’s most coveted architectural style. Wellington Square in Chelsea provided the template for the architects of London Square Fulham – and Jo Thompson captures a triglyph detail from Wellington Square on the steps in the Chelsea garden. Jo Thompson, who has also been commissioned by London Square to design the garden of the new show home at London Square Fulham, said: “I grew up in Italy and squares are very much a feature of Italian life, as they are in London – communal and convivial spaces for people to meet, ex-
change gossip and watch the world go by. I used to live near Eccleston Square in Pimlico, which is known for its roses and is considered to be one of the capital’s most beautiful garden squares. Squares have been part of London life for centuries. They can transport you to another place and yet be metres from a busy road and the beating heart of a city. I have tried to capture this in our Chelsea garden.” Rebecca Littler, Sales Director, London Square, said: “We are so excited to be working with Jo Thompson on creating a design for a London square, to capture the sense of tranquillity and community embodied in this much admired architectural design.”
The Chelsea Flower Show will take place from Mon. 19th May – Sat. 24th May. http://www.rhs.org.uk/Shows-Events

SENLAC CLASSIC CAR SHOW AND CRAFT FAYRE Bodiam Sunday 15th June 2014 Once again Father’s Day is being celebrated with the best Classic Car Show in the area. For over 20 years the Rotary Club of Senlac has worked hard to put on a show that year on year has expanded to include an impressive array of cars, commercial and military vehicles as well as dozens of craft and charity stalls, children’s’ rides and day long entertainment. A show for the whole family, food outlets include the traditional and very popular BBQ as well as the equally popular tea and cake stall together with the ‘Senlac Arms’ fully licensed bar. The show last year was the biggest ever and well over £6000 was given to local and Rotary charities. The 300 or so vehicles formed the centrepiece of a great show topped off by the appearance on schedule, of a sole Spitfire which enthralled the large crowd as it looped and circled the show ground. The very sound of that Merlin engine was sufficient to bring back a whole range of memories for many show goers. What makes this show different? It is all about families, all about our shared history and all about a celebration of Dad! It also all about co-operation; each year we are stunned by the support from local Bodiam people, from local businesses from the classic car show fraternity and from the generous crowds who come to have a fun day and in so doing help to add to the £100,000 total which the show has raised for charity. From 10.00 am until 5.00pm the showground is the place to be. Further information and entry details from 01424 754560

1914 - 2014
Conscious of the anniversary Battle Choral Society opens its Spring proramme singing ‘For The Fallen’. Words written by Laurence Binyon which have subsequently become synonymous with Remembrance, were almost uknown when Sir Edward Elgar set them to music in his ‘Spirit of England’ in 1916. While its twenty other verses are now rarely heard, this one is time honoured. They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old....At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. George Butterworth’s orchestral idyll ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ was composed in 1913. Butterworth later enlisted and died on the Somme. He was posthumously awarded the Military Cross Like many thousands of others his body was never found and the work became an anthem for uknown soldiers. At the heart of the concert is ‘A German Requiem’ begun by Brahms in 1861, taken up in 1865 on the death of his mother, and heard complete for the first time in 1869. It is not a conventional liturgical Requiem, Brahms rather set Bibilical texts to music for choir and orchestra, with soprano and baritone soloists. We welcome back Emily Steventon and Terrence Aychare to sing with us again for this magnificient work and which Brahms preferred to call... A Requiem for all Humanity The ninety voices of Battle Choral Society will be accompanied by an orchestra of forty professional musicians and conducted by their Director of Music John Langridge. Tickets are £15 each and available from Raggs Boutique, 20 High Stret, Battle. Little Larder, 39 Norman Road, St. Leonards on Sea by phoning 01424 870862 or 845219 or online www.battlechoral.co.uk A coach will depart from the Market Square, Battle promptly at 6.30pm. There is no charge but seats must be reserved by phoning 01424 775730 This concert is dedicated to THE FALLEN OF ALL NATIONS 1914 - 1918
Traction Engine Rally Sat 31st May and 1st June In 1966 Claude and Joyce Jessett held their first steam rally and every year since then this famous two day event has provided a fantastic family atmosphere, filled with sights and sounds that delight the senses. With a huge crosssection of exhibit types, from stationary engines to some of the largest traction engines ever made there is definitely something to interest the whole family. The highlight of each day will surely be watching engine drivers and their steersmen compete in the ‘Judge the Width’ competition. Don’t forget to have a ride on “The Great Bush Railway” visit the organ museum and then why not have a wander around the stalls selling all manner of items including clothes, tools, autojumble, bric-a-brac, plants and collectables. Pause for a while and enjoy a pint of Harveys beer along with hot or cold food - you could even bring a picnic. This year, as in all previous years, the rally is held in aid of Cancer Research UK. Sussex Rocks is a family owned organisation whose aim is to bring together youngsters from the ages of 10 – 18 for a week of music making and fun. It is open to guitarists, bass guitarists, drummers, vocalists, and keyboard players in the main but other musicians are most welcome. Last year we had an amazing young sax player and a violinist. We understand that there are many youngsters out there who all have their individual weekly music lessons but many of them never get the opportunity to perform with other musicians as part of a live band. This is such an important aspect of learning any instrument as being with others not only gives confidence but greatly improves their playing as they bounce ideas between each other and learn to make group decisions. We find the advantage of having the 10-18 age range is that the younger members get really inspired by the older members who themselves are more than willing to give a helping hand or a word of advice. This makes for a great atmosphere throughout the week. Our expert tutors are there to guide you in all aspects of your playing and there is always an opportunity to try an instrument you have not previously played. In fact last year one of our acoustic guitarists was playing bass by the end of the week. Participants will perform in small groups and play the music they want to play and if they are interested they can write and perform their own music. We cover all styles of music from rock, pop, folk, blues, electric and acoustic. Throughout the week we offer several masterclasses in various techniques and students can choose to participate in all or just those which interest them. Details of these can been seen on our webiste www.sussexrocks.org.uk. We always have a fantastic end of week gig for family and friends so that the youngsters can show off their skills. The cost is £150 for the whole week

The Greatest Love Story Ever Told Bowler Crab’s recent version of this star-crossed lovers tale is a rich visual feast. The team at Half House Farm led by Stephen J John have shaken up a 400-year-old play without losing its touching, poetic innocence. This production captured the thrill and excitement of being young and in love and the audience is carried along by a young couples adolescent self-belief and stung by the sense of loss at the tragedy’s end. Every member of the cast makes the most of their moments of performance, combining their Shakespearean skills with an obvious understanding of their characters and their contexts. This context is masterly manifested once again by Andy Godfrey in his portrayl of Capulet. Alexander Hunt and Imogen Amey-Haworth are a believely committed pair of lovers, while the production’s laughs come from Ben Cassan’s manic Mercutio, who comes equipped with a rugged humour and perfect timing. Director Stephen J John keeps the set minimal and costumes simple, in tune with traditional Elizabethan theatrical practice. This has the effect of focusing the attention on the actual diaogue and unstoppable chain reaction that will lead to passion, defiance, murder, suicide and the greatest love story ever told....... Did you know the legal cost of getting married / having a civil ceremony in a registrar’s office without the trimmings is around £50 and takes 10 minutes. Venues have to pay for the licence to marry people on their premises, Registrars have to be paid when they attend venues away from the office, and these additional costs are passed on to you in one way or another. Once you are legally married, you can have your Marriage Celebration, (Full Ceremony) where you want, when you want, wear what you want, include religion if you wish, and have the music you want. Guy Boyling will design marriage celebrations and ceremonies to highlight the most important people concerned - the two of you.

Guy Boyling Toastmaster: The proposal of toasts is only a small part of the modern duties of the Toastmaster. One of the reasons for the rise in the popularity of Toastmasters is that in today’s society he has been increasingly required to adopt some of the role traditionally performed by the Best Man. An experienced Toastmaster ensures the event runs smoothly and on time. On the day he is effectively the Project Manager and Coordinator, expert in protocol, etiquette, the correct procedures, and timing. Immaculately dressed in white tie and red tail-coat, the Toastmaster adds Colour, Tradition, and Dignity to any function, formal or informal, making your special event a most memorable experience for everyone.

Birds of a Feather
S
pring, always a nice time in natures calendar. The beautiful songs of the early birds with the wonderful colours that suddenly appear from nowhere to blanket the sunlit forest floor, you just can’t beat a gentle stroll through a British wood to ease your mind and relax your body. A landscape of Bluebells as far as the eye can see somehow eliminates the troubles of the world bringing you into a contented peace with the planet.
For our garden birds this can also be a very stressful time, needing to find a mate then searching for the right accommodation is just the start of a very busy month or two. A huge amount of effort goes into rearing a family, apart from building a nest which in itself is a colossal task, they have to protect themselves and young from their many predators, continually hunt for food which can depend on weather conditions, then...in some cases, do it all again.
Sadly only about 25% of eggs laid actually make it to reach their first year, happily tho’, most garden birds lay enough eggs to sustain the numbers. Finishing on a happy “me- me” note....... I saw some great sunsets while away in Africa...
