Paws, Claws & Doors: My name is Nigel, I grew up with many animals. We have approx 2 acres of land, stock fenced into smaller paddocks and an area of lawn which is securely fenced. There are several paths across fields where we can walk away from any traffic, but we are happy to walk their normal routes, etc if housesitting or daily visits. All small animals can be housed in one of our hutches or their own if preferred. I have been doing this for quite a few years but having been made redundant decided to enlarge on my passion.

A21 BEST KEPT HIDDEN SECRET Times are still hard and will remain so for many years. For many the dream of moving house, or purchasing their first, goes on. Your frenetic nightmares may vary, but our dream will not. Living in a home that backs onto country side for miles and miles, your only early morning visitors being the squirrel, dove, jackdaw and wagtail. Magnificent views are guaranteed either to the front or rear, and sometimes both, with neighbours to the side either near or far, but always distant. The morning light is outstanding as it silhouettes the forms of the tree’s with the morning dew upon the meadow beyond the fence, with a seasonal surprise of either sheep or cow, as the black bird sings its morning glory, then evening light gives uninterrupted cascades of red as the sun sets below the distant horizon. Your home being on a historic ridge protected from the ravages of the sea, wind and mist, high above any waterline. A place where pilgrims walked for safety and long before distant ancestors walked above dense forest and beast in the valley below heading for the sea shore, as the soaring birds and floating clouds, told him a story of the weather to come. Here air like traffic always moves as they periodically pass by. High above the valley it is fresh, unlike slow moving Lorries and cars trapped between building and road, where the pump out fumes lay within the home and garden. This is the land of dense forest and beast that people are entwined and not the land of pilgrim and hunter gatherer. NEED MORE SPACE BUT CAN’T AFFORD AN EXTENSION? NFF log cabins are a fraction of the cost and many don’t need planning permission. They are an elegant addition to any home. If you are a therapist why not work from home? Log cabins make relaxing therapy rooms and save the cost of renting a clinic. As guest accommodation they excel and are an obvious choice for holiday lets or ‘teen crash-rooms’. They can have their own space and you can have yours. Working from home has never been easier. Home office prices start from £1030 (inc VAT). How many BBQ’s get rained off due to the English weather? Invest in some NFF decking along with a pretty summerhouse and you can BBQ all year round. Beside a swimming pool it can double up as a changing room and chill-out space. NFF Ltd has a number of furnished show cabins on display at their Horam premises. These include an art studio/bedsit; a home office/therapy room; a teenagers’ retreat/sleepover pad, a relaxing summerhouse and a stunning Wendy House.

Chris Beardshaw challenges the preconceptions of age with a garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace
F
ollowing on from winning a Gold Medal and The People’s Choice Award at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, garden designer Chris Beardshaw has turned his attention to RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July, where he is creating a thought provoking show garden for McCarthy & Stone, the UK’s leading retirement developer. As with all his show gardens Chris wants this design to not only provide a beautiful outdoor space, but to also promote the key messages of McCarthy & Stone, which
believes that later life should be rich, rewarding and hugely fulfilling. With his highly creative design, Chris is aiming to challenge the preconceptions and sterotypes of later life and to honour and celebrate the experiences and positive role models within the UK’s growing over-60s population. The large show garden has been designed to enable visitors to walk through so they can engage with the planting and the audio clips specially captured for the show. There are three pathways representing three key strands of narrative which Chris explored and they are experience, style and ingenuity, two of these paths allow visitors in and out of the garden with the third allows clear views through a wildflower meadow towards a central circle and secluded garden, which is richly planted with high summer perennials. Sitting within the luscious planting is the imposing centre piece – a five metre high steel framed androgynous head. As the visitors walk along the pathways they will be able to listen to a variety of audio clips from retirees sharing their knowledge, experiences, hopes and ambitions for the future.
60s to upload their stories and contributions via facebook, twitter and email, further dispelling the view that the over 60’s are generally not techsavvy. Commenting on the garden Chris said: “With this garden we really wanted to stimulate discussion around the perceived boundaries, or isolation that older generations can experience. We want to celebrate the valuable experience and contributions people have made throughout their adult years and working life, as well as looking forward to the continued and new contributions they will go on to offer once they have retired.” The show runs from Tuesday 9 July Sunday 14 July 2013 9 - 10 July RHS members only 11 - 14 July RHS members and nonmembers Time: 9–13 July 10.00am – 7.30pm 14 July 10.00am – 5.30pm (sell off starts at 4.30pm) afternoon tickets valid from 2.30pm Venue: Hampton Court Palace, Surrey KT8 9AT. Wagyu Beef Burgers Wagyu beef ‘caviar of meats’ is back at The White Horse
Wagyu meat is highly sought after, but until now, only imported cuts were being served in select few restaurants. Full blood Wagyu cows have free range to graze the clover rich pasture at the farm between the Spring and Autumn months. Specific farming practices means the meat achieves the same eating quality as the Kobe beef of Japan. The meat has a distinct “marbling” – the effect of adding fat, and flavour to the joint. Fat is what holds all the flavour in a peice of beef and gives a lovely taste when cooked. The White Horse is the only place you can order pure breed Wagyu in Sussex. Harrods have long been selling the Japanese delicacy - also known as Kobe beef - at £200 per kilo. But now you can have a Wagyu burger and chips for just £13.95 at The White Horse.

Yealands Estate Marlborough
NEW ZEALAND
Located in the southern Awatere Valley sub-region of Marlborough, Yealands Estate is arguably the most ambitious family-owned vineyard enterprise in New Zealand. Few could grasp the breadth of Peter Yealands’ vision when he took on the challenge of creating terraced vineyards amongst these rolling foothills in the late 90s, eventually realising Yealands Seaview Vineyard. Whilst the majority of the vineyard is planted with New Zealand’s world renowned Sauvignon Blanc vines, Peter was one of the first to plant alternative varietals like Gruner Veltliner and Viognier in Marlborough. Yealands Estate is a showcase of innovative environmental sustainability. The wines are carefully nurtured from the vine to the bottle with low impact methods, leading-edge green technologies and some very inventive thinking. Yealand’s carbon neutral winery, built in accordance with New Zealand Building Council’s Green Star Building Certification, was one of a handful in the world to achieve carboNZeroTM certification. Launched in 2008, the winery is also the first to have measured and offset all greenhouse gas emissions since day one. With an absolute commitment to sustainable wine production, Yealands Estate brings together wine maker Tamra Washington and winery owner and founder, Peter Yealands, whose vineyard development skills and ‘green’ wine business vision lead the industry in sustainable premium wine production. This superb Riesling is one of their flagship wines and it is perfect for summer drinking. With or without food. Forget the common misconception that all Rieslings are sweet and Germanic in style. Pale straw in colour with a pure nose of lemon and lime. Dry in style, this Riesling is focused and steely, with a wonderful balance between the refreshing, racy acidity and purity of fruit.

The Rainbow Trout pub in Broad Oak is a traditional country pub which opened again in May under a new publican family team. They have already introduced many exciting ideas, creating a fantastic destination for all. Located between the famous towns of Rye and Battle, the Rainbow Trout is a beautiful village pub offering an extensive menu of traditional pub meals throughout the day complimented with seasonal specialities and locally sourced produce. Outside there is a huge garden with lots of things for your kids to enjoy including. The pub boasts a private Function room / Restaurant for up to 72 people.
CALLENDERS RESTAURANT It was my birthday earlier this week so we went to Callenders with some friends for a celebration dinner. Callenders have been serving the best of British Food in Sussex for two years now and I definitely have a few favourites on the menu. I usually pick the Deep Fried Whitebait and I really love the Apple Baked Slow Roast Pork Belly. And it’s got to be a steamed Treacle pud for afters. It’s such a hard choice though, especially when you see the specials board. Fresh fish, Liver and Bacon, Summer Salads, Roast Duck and Steaks. There’s Fillet, Rump and T-Bone to choose from. Fantastic. All wines from the list are only £11.95 a bottle so it’s terrific value too. And guess what? Because Callenders were celebrating their Birthday too, my dinner was free. Double celebration! So if you or someone you know has a birthday in July book your table now, and enjoy a birthday dinner from the menu completely free.

An Evening of Shakespeare with Bowler Crab Bowler Crab Productions are a theatre group who perform at Half House Farm, Three Oaks, Nr. Hastings, specialising in Shakespeare. What’s On Magazine went along to the opening night of their first production Macbeth. The outdoor theatrical space at Half House Farm is the perfect venue for a traditional Shakespearean play. It’s an inventive production full of new ideas with great performances throughout. Performed in 19th Century costume Rick Arther Baker plays Macbeth, a man drawn into a nightmare of his own creation with Heather Alexander as the remorseless she-devil Lady Macbeth. The three witches are superbly sinister, while Fiona Batey makes a spectacularly lewd and inebriated Porter. Be sure to look out for Bowler Crabs next production coming soon. www.bowler-crab.moonfruit.com

DanceHouseUK It’s hard to believe that DanceHouseUK opened its doors to aspiring dancers and performers three years ago this September. “It’s true that time flies when you are having fun” Natascia Mazzucato, principal of DanceHouseUK said. “I am so proud in all that the school and students have achieved as well as the dedication and support I get from my team, students and families!” DanceHouseUK really is a family, as we take great pride and pleasure in each other’s successes and progress”. Natascia ex Elmhurst, Professional Dancer, and Legat Teacher of 9 years at Bede’s, opened DanceHouseUK in order to pass on her knowledge and experience to young hopefuls, to follow in her footsteps. “I want to see young people inspired and to develop a life-long passion for dance and the arts.” DanceHouseUK have a lot to offer with a very varied timetable of all dance genres; ballet, modern, jazz, tap, contemporary, classical Greek and street dance are all offered. ‘From Pirate to Music Missionary!’ Roger Day has met and interviewed top music stars ranging from wild man of rock Joe Walsh of the Eagles to Sir Cliff Richard. Many know Roger for his nickname of “Twiggy” from his days on Radio Caroline in the 1960’s, the ship that inspired ‘The Boat that Rocked’ movie and featured such DJ’s as Simon Dee and Johnnie Walker. After coming ashore he joined Radio Luxembourg and in 1970 was voted Number One Radio DJ. Roger compered the Beach Boys 1968 European tour and there are many other pop shows and stars he introduced over the years. When Commercial radio started in England Roger was the first voice on air at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester and he has worked for and managed several independent radio stations since then. For the last six years he has hosted the much respected BBC Evening music show across Southern counties. He is well known for his unique and in depth interviewing technique and his show featured such stars as Sir Cliff, Graham Nash, Paul Anka and Andy Williams. Roger is noted for his knowledge and love of music and has one of the largest record collections in the world. He has become increasingly concerned about the state of the modern music industry, saying the playlists of the radio stations are too narrow, while the record companies are not helping new artists in the way they should. He has now started the ‘Campaign for Real Music,’ and while continuing to broadcast a weekend show for the BBC, has put his money where his ears are and has set up Uncool Radio (www.rogerday.co.uk) ‘Playing the music that other stations won’t, broadcasting a new 3 hour show each weekday which one reviewer described as ‘a slice of real radio.’ Therefore, an ‘Evening with Roger Day,’ on Saturday 27th at the Sinden Theatre, Tenterden, promises to be a lively and captivating evening!

PETERHOUSE
- A dynamic & energetic living environment
Newly opened in the Summer of 2008 the new Peterhouse Day Care Centre is attached to the well established residential care and independent living centre run by NABS - The National Advertising Benevolent Society. Those using the Day Care facilities do not need to have any connections with the industry to use the extensive facilities on offer which also provides support for both clients and their families. We were shown around the well equipped centre and the Care Manager explained ‘we are introducing new activities all the time and although we have our own employees which include two support workers and a support coordinator, we are always looking for volunteers to help out as well, even
a few hours a week makes all the difference. We have had lots of good comments from our visitors which makes it all the more rewarding for our staff.’ A two course hot lunch is included each day and there is also a luncheon club where both visitors and their families can come along together at a cost of £5.50 per person. The Day Centre is used for a variety of respite needs whether it’s half a day a week or several days at a time which can be linked to an overnight stay at Peterhouse, something quite unique which is difficult to find elsewhere. Wildlife
Birds of a Feather So that’s the breeding season nearly over, we will find out whether it was successful or like last year a little disappointing in due course. After watching Springwatch it’s a bit of a result if any of our breeding birds managed to bring their new families into the world. Springwatch cameras strategicly placed near many of the nest sites allowed for superb viewing, showing us first all the hard work then the tough,
dangerous times that most of the birds endure. This has of course been going on for thousands of years, our recent insight shows us that nature needs a lot of understanding, a lot of what we do over the next few years will make a huge difference to what future generations may or may not see in the natural world. Although I do like watching Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Martin Hughes-Games doing their stuff I was a bit surprised to see the clip of Martin and a BTO member showing us how to search for nests using a stick and a very small brain. If anyone wants to help the BTO in this very important work I would suggest that you contact them here - www.bto. org/volunteer-surveys - as there is a strict code of conduct regarding nesting birds. Pictured here are a couple of birds that successfully bred here at Feathers...... Allan ..... feathers wild bird care. www.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk
