Oven Wizards Testimonials
Just had our double oven cleaned by Paul, so very pleased with my oven, looks brand new! Would not hesitate in recommending Oven Wizards. Denise Gerrard-Glass. (Hastings) We are so delighted with the oven clean that you did for us today, it is absolutely fantastic. Thank you for working so hard to achieve the results. Dr Blair (Eastbourne) Compared with other oven cleaning companies I have used in the past Paul went the extra mile when cleaning my oven. He stripped out the racks, back panel and fan and also removed and split the oven door to clean the dirty glass that I could not get to. I will definitely recommend the service to my friends. DRY CARPET CLEANING, reduces allergens & improves indoor air quality. Up to 85% of the soiling in your carpets is dry. In order to remove this we use the amazing HOST SYSTEM with its vacuum and counter rotating brushes. The remaining 15% of grease and dirt is removed by pre-spraying, spots and stains are removed next, followed by our natural sponge compound. All of thse ECO friendly products are worked carefully into your carpet with the counter rotating brushes, then extracted out with the vacuum. Our system is efficient, convenient with minimal drying times. No need to empty rooms of furniture, leave windows open, run loud air movers for hours or, be careful to avoid the room for hours (or days) until its dry. Because we don’t use the wet extraction method, we don’t use water. So there is no risk of shrinkage, seam splitting, dye bleed or bad odours. We just leave you with a bright clean, deodorised carpet featuring a rejuvenated pile. All this backed up with our 100% money back guarantee. RING Excel Carpet Care on 01892 784029.

Marketing your Home By Kate Lovering So you have opted for your agent, had a valuation and are now ready to start marketing your property. If you have opted for a high street agent all the marketing material should be included in their commission price. If you have chosen to use an online agent professional photos and floorplans are often an extra at an additional cost. I cannot stress enough how important good photos and a floorplan are, they have the responsibility of casting a first impression on any potential buyer. Do not be tempted to go without a floor plan to save money. House hunters rely on them to give a true representation of the space and rooms available. Measurements cannot be doctored to flatter like photographs can so people trust them more. Having said that good photos are paramount. It is a photo which will attract a potential buyer. After a quick flick through the photos on the portals most people will have made their judgement on your home. Whether an online or high street agent if you are not happy with the photos then speak up, as the vendor you can help to achieve great photos by tidying the house, removing clutter and by ensuring all lightbulbs are working. Finally your house is on the market, with both online and high street agents you are now relying on people liking the property details available to them. However if you are using
an online agent the internet is the only marketing platform. According to figures from the office for national statistics in 2014 only 87% of adults had access to the internet and 6.4 million adults had never used the internet, meaning that online agents immediately excluded 13% of adults. The same statistics revealed that only 37% of adults aged over 75 had used the internet. Knowing that 45% of the population of Bexhill are over 65 gives you an idea of the number of people not reached should you market a property in Bexhill solely online. High street agents have moved with the times and advertise online but they are also able to adopt more old fashioned methods of shop front window displays, local newspaper advertising and are much more likely to convince a walk in off the street who is dithering to come and view the property. Hopefully if the house details have bene done well the viewings should start fairly quickly after marketing but try not to be disheartened if it seems a bit slow especially if you have a niche property or a property at the higher end of the market where the pool of potential buyers is smaller. On average statistically a house sells after 15 viewings, obviously this depends on the housing market in your local area and how the viewings are conducted. I will be advising you on how to capitalise on a viewing in the May edition of What’s On.

Gennaro Contaldo Gennaro Contaldo is one of the most respected chefs in London as well as a renowned personality in his own right. He is widely known as the Italian legend who taught Jamie Oliver all he knows about Italian cooking. Gennaro Contaldo was born in Minori on the Amalfi coast, where he first started helping in local restaurant kitchens at the age of eight. He came to Britain in the late 1960s and spent his first years travelling around the country, working in local village restaurants and studying wild food. He then came to London where he worked as a chef in a number of restaurants before opening the award-winning ‘Passione’. We first met Gennaro Contaldo as the chef who inspired Jamie Oliver when they had worked together at Carluccio’s. Since then Gennaro’s quintessentially Italian spirit has made him a
TV favourite and these days he divides his time between inspiring us to cook authentic Italian food through his books, magazine and television appearances, and working with Jamie on his ‘Jamie’s Italian’ restaurants. He regularly appears as a top chef on ‘BBC Breakfast’, ‘Saturday Kitchen’ and ‘Good Food Live’. He has also appeared on numerous Jamie Oliver shows on UK TV and America’s famous ‘The Iron Chef’. Gennaro lives in north-east London with his partner and their six-year-old twin girls.

hat’s On Magazine Met up with Gennaro to discuss his New Book ‘Gennaro: Slow Cook Italian’ Gennaro, could you tell us about the inspiration behind the new book? If there was really one book I wanted to write then this was it. It reminds me of my home town, my family, my mother and father and my sister because in those days you had to cook everything slowly. You would always prepare the dinner the night before and then start it the following morning. The preparation took hardly any time at all but the time was taken with the cooking. A lot of these dishes are meat dishes but I have also included many lighter recipes. Putting them together
takes minutes but the marinading can take hours. My sister who is pictured in the book was really excited about the project as she really wanted to get involved and come along to give her input. We have a wood burning stove at my house, so it was good to have her there and I had forgotten how good a cook she actually was. In Italy there are many chefs but it is always the woman who is in charge in the kitchen. When you have a 2 kilo octopus to cook then you have to cook it slowly. There is an old Italian saying if someone is being difficult, you say ‘let them be like an octopus and cook in their own juices’. A bit of garlic and tomato and the whole thing cooks in its own juices and it is as tender as you could wish for.
Are there recipes in the book from your home region or all over Italy? They are from all regions of Italy, I have had experiences cooking in many parts of Italy and have drawn from those experiences to produce this range of recipes. Every region swears that it produces the best food from a particular recipe but not only that it comes down to the individual householder perfecting each recipe. Italy is all about pride and taste so one householder will say their recipe is better than their next door neighbour. Did you get any inspiration for the book when you were filming the series ‘Two Greedy Italians’ with Antonio Carluccio? Yes there are always things you learn and experience when you are travelling through all the regions of Italy and in fact all over the world. You always have your way of doing things but then you meet someone who perhaps has a slightly different approach, you can always learn a new technique. You filmed two series of ‘Two Greedy Italians’, are there any plans for a third? We filmed another two specials over Christmas last year. There are lots of projects coming soon which we are doing together with the BBC. There is something big coming up and we are almost finished with it but that is all I can say at the moment. The BBC love those programmes so much and they keep repeating them. Both the programmes and the books have been hit all over the world from Russian to Canada to America and even in Africa, they love it. Could you tell us about your role at Jamie’s Italian? I am a partner in the business of ‘Jamie’s Italian’ but let me tell you a story how it all came about. Jamie was a very young boy when he came to London and actually because he started so young he has been in the kitchen longer than I have. I was about nine or ten before I started cooking but Jamie was virtually born in the kitchen because his mother and father had a pub with a restaurant. He came to London from Essex and once he completed his college training he really wanted to learn and cook Italian food because you can see that it is fresh and seasonal. He was recommended to come and see me at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street Restaurant. I used to start very early in the morning and there was a knock on the door at about 6am from this young boy saying ‘I am looking for a job’. He looked so young I thought he was still at school but we sat
- 30 -

down and talked over a cappuccino and I basically hired him on the spot. I had never employed anyone straight away like that, I would normally give them a week and see how they got on but I could see he was so enthusiastic and within a short time he was helping me in all parts of the kitchen. I felt that at last I had found someone that I could pass all of my experience onto. We became like a father and son and once he learned everything that I could teach him I said now it is time for you to go and do your own thing. Before he left he told me he had a dream that one day he was going to be very famous and open a restaurant. We then talked about him opening perhaps two restaurants or even three. So he went off and of course the rest is history. I continued with Carluccio for a few years and then opened my restaurant in Charlotte Street called ‘La Passione’. One day Jamie came to me and said ‘Lets start a restaurant together’. He said can
you imagine how many young people we could employ and help them in the same way that you helped me. He convinced me that it was a good idea and so we started over first restaurant in Oxford and it was incredible, we then expanded to Bath, Kingston, Brighton and we now have over 40 ‘Jamie Italian restaurants’. So I am always here helping out the chefs and I can be cooking in a restaurant every day anywhere in the world. Now, I learn a lot from Jamie, because he has travelled and experienced much more than I have and has met more people and chefs than I have. Every one of our chefs learns the passion for ingredients and quality which goes behind every dish we produce. Jamie has his own YouTube channel and every week I have a video on there showcasing one of our recipes. Can you tell us about your new relationship, working with the Italian
travel company Citalia? Citalia is incredible because I remember them when I first came to England. They have always been romantic to me because of their connection to Italy. When I first came to England it took two days and one night to make the journey so the company always held that connection for me to my home land. Last year they approached me because they were looking for a chef who knew all the regions of Italy who could give inspiration to all of their regular travellers. The company is 85 years old and they are such a nice company to work with, so now I am an Ambassador for the company and I produce films with them. Every month I write about a different region of Italy and we look at dishes from that region. What is your favourite dessert? There are a huge variety of desserts in Italy, people always assume the French have fabulous desserts but Italy has just as

many variations. Everything is to do with sweetness. When I was growing up I think the ice cream was always my favourite and probably still is to this day. I had to learn how to eat ice cream in England. In Italy we only had ice cream in the summer months and so after October it wasn’t available anymore. In England an ice cream gives you the flavour of summer and it is still popular all year round. There is an Italian cafe in Richmond which serves Christmas Pudding ice cream which is just fabulous.
We saw that you made a Pigs Blood and Chocolate dessert in one of your series. Yes it sounds extreme, but when you think of things like black pudding then it is no different. We were in Columbia at the time and we had to come up with a dessert for the whole family. As a young boy I grew up with a family who had pigs which we would kill for our own use. We would always use every part of the animal including the blood. My father used to make it and I used to absolutely love it, so I suggested that we would try in on the programme. In Columbia the children are

here’s nothing better than a succulent Sunday Roast to guide you on your way to that all-important Sunday snooze. If you’re looking for somewhere new for a spot of Sunday lunch then the The Vine at Goudhurst is well worth a visit. While the weekday menu is nothing short of amazing, the seriously good Sunday roast raises the bar to another level. Served on a huge wooden platter it’s certainly an impressive sight. Make sure you take a healthy appetite with you and allow yourself
used to the culture of living and working with animals so they accepted it and actually really enjoyed it. They cleared all the plates and that was actually the last time I cooked that. The important thing is to use fresh blood.

time to relax in the unpretentious and friendly atmosphere. Whether it’s a Roast Pork Belly and Pork Stuffing or Half Roast Chicken it’s just about as succulent as you’ll find, and all served with exquisite roast potatoes, honey roast vegetables and a rich gravy. However, the real scene-stealer here is the prime cut of Roast Topside Beef, roasted to pink perfection - it’s extremely good indeed. For dessert you can’t beat the chocolate brownie and passion fruit sorbet. The light, fluffy sponge and deep chocolate sauce is heavenly, with the passion fruit sorbet offering an astute touch of lightness. Highly recommended. .... What’s On Editor

Fashion & Leisure
HALO is bursting at the seams with beautiful new stock! You may have noticed from the eye-catching window displays that colour features strongly again this Spring. Prints are big news with patterned trousers continuing to be a very strong look this year. Whilst for the brave the fashion is to wear matching or even contrasting prints together, the majority of us will tone it down slightly & add a simple top in a plain colour. Printed trousers look great dressed down in the day with flats (or flip flops once warm) but are surprisingly dressy with the addition of heels and a strappy top. If you prefer a dress when you go out, you’ll not be disappointed by the new styles from PAPERDOLLS. They have taken the industry by storm and are the “go-to” brand for a gorgeous dress whether it be a date, wedding or just about any occasion. The new season bags from FIORELLI are stunning, lots of pastel shades and even some beautiful floral designs with matching purses. With MOTHER’S DAY in the middle of the month, HALO have a wonderful selection of beautiful gifts with which to pamper your Mum. A
new destination wine bar is opening on Rye High Street at No 24 “THE WHITE VINE HOUSE”. An intimate lounge, secluded from the bustling high street just outside but feeling like a world away. Expect classic elegance together with quality antiques and rather exquisite wines. Of course, Champagne is always the star of any show and will be just one of the many options available by the glass. The bar is the perfect location for hosting a meeting or toasting a special occasion. Venues in Rye are in short supply once the after-work crowd dashes off, but the new wine bar will keep things lively by offering a haven of relaxation and a friendly environment throughout the day and will be the perfect place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink or even a nightcap after visiting the cinema.
Initially the opening times will be 10.30am - 11pm from Thursday to Sunday. Charcuterie & Cheese boards will also be available for those who are just looking for a quick snack to enjoy with a glass of wine. Louis Swann of La Maison and John Boyall of Wishbarn Antiques will be working together to ensure there is always a fine collection of classic and quirky antiques to capture the imagination. The stylish guest accommodation enjoyed at the White Vine House over the past years will continue under the management of Javed Khan while La Maison’s Antique Warehouse in Fishmarket Road will still be open, offering antiques displayed from a range of dealers as well as a pick up and drop off point for the La Maison Dress Agency.

Award winning designer Jo Thompson to create a sylvan retreat for M&G at RHS Chelsea Flower Show
T
he M&G Garden will feature a two-storey oak framed building inspired by the writing room of poet Vita Sackville-West at Sissinghurst Castle, a large natural swimming pond edged with water-loving plants, a woodland of river birches, acacias and acers, and a garden with tumbling roses and peonies in a palette of greens, punctuated by soft pinks, lavender blues and creams, with a touch of orange.
Jo Thompson with Alan Titchmarsh
Partially covered by trees and lush planting, The M&G Garden design for 2015 draws on Jo’s local influences: from the vernacular architecture features synonymous with the Sussex and Kent countryside where she currently lives, to the use of Purbeck stone at the far end of the swimming pond owing to her childhood in Dorset. The romantic garden will represent a quintessentially British restorative retreat, where visitors will be able to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of city living.
Jo Thompson, garden designer, said: “I wanted to create a special garden for M&G that is a retreat, yet follows the principles of traditional British gardening: local materials such as oak and limestone surrounded by typical cottage planting with more than a hint of the woodland.”
“Each year The M&G Garden is an example of how British garden design has developed, but with many recurring trends that have stood the test of time - an approach that reflects M&G Investments’ own company values. We are confident that Jo’s creative design will once again create a show-stopping garden for all to enjoy.” In addition to the all-female gardening team, Jo will once again work with Roger Platts, a multiple gold medal winner at RHS Chelsea and twice the designer of The M&G Garden in previous years, to ensure that the 2015 garden has only the best in trees, shrubs and flowers timed perfectly for the Show. 2015 is M&G’s sixth year as the sole sponsor of RHS Chelsea. M&G has been managing investments for individuals and institutions since 1931. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 19 to 23 May 2015. 19 - 20 May RHS members only 21 - 23 May RHS members and non-members Time: 19 - 22 May 8am-8pm 23 May 8am - 5.30pm (sell off starts at 4pm) Venue: Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London
Jacqui Haskins, M&G Marketing Director, commented: “The M&G Garden will mark Jo’s sixth Show garden at RHS Chelsea and we have always been impressed with Jo’s beautiful creations in the past. It is also fantastic to be working with such a well-regarded female designer, along with her all-female gardening team.

The Association of Carers free respite and befriending service gives unpaid carers the opportunity to take a weekly three hour break from their caring role, while a carefully selected and thoroughly vetted volunteer spends time with the person they look after. Barbara has been caring for her husband Cliff since he had a stroke 27 years ago. Sadly the stroke left Cliff unable to speak but he is able to walk with the aid of a stick and has a great sense of humour. Volunteer Paul visits the couple each week and goes out with Cliff while Barbara has some time to herself. Paul said: “I love my role as a respite and befriending volunteer. I feel rewarded by seeing how much Barbara appreciates her break and Cliff and I have a great time together, we go to the garden centre for a browse and enjoy a cup of tea.”
A New Year Resolution Now that we are at the start of 2015 it is a good time to set resolutions and to make sure that your affairs are in order. Lock and Gurney offer a free consultation for writing wills. You may have a will but have not looked at it for years. We would be happy to look at the will and see if it needs updating. If it is still up to date then you will have peace of mind that everything is still in order. If you have not made a will but have been thinking about making one then again we are happy to explain what goes into a will and why. Lock and Gurney hope it is a long time before you need to use your will but none of us know when that time will be. Why not start the new year by finding out how to make a will and have that peace of mind that your affairs are in order for your loved ones.

Wildlife Birds of a Feather I ask you, is there anything better than sitting in your garden listening and watching your feathered visitors?
bossy Nuthatch chomp their way through my peanut feeder and to top it all the peoples favourite garden bird
Well.... possibly one or two things but for an old birder like me it is the tops. Just watching the acrobatic Tits dividing their time between the Sunflower Hearts, the Peanuts and the suet feeders is rewarding enough. I have up to a dozen squabbling Blackbirds with a very welcome Song Thrush. The colourful Finches clump and chat together on the sunflower feeder, the diminutive little Wren flits around the shrubs desperately looking for insects. The very greedy Wood Pigeons, Collared Doves and Pheasants generally cleaning up anything they can find. The Great Spotted Woodpecker and the
“Rob the Gob” sings his heart out. I believe I personally require three things to get the best out of my garden bird watching..... A nice pair of binoculars, my trusty Lumix camera and most importantly a very understanding wife. I am one lucky old codger......
