Every child has all kinds of abilities and capabilities, but unless they explore them, experiment and learn to express themselves, they may never realise the talents within them. Stagecoach sets out to inspire children to unleash their potential, teaching the performing arts and so much more. Stagecoach calls it ‘Creative Courage for Life’. BEST IN SHOW!
With Crufts 2017 winners announced and discarded poo bags festooning our woodlands and hedgerows debated on Jeremy Vine’s BBC Radio 2 show and a Conservative MP flicking soggy rolls and eclairs with sticks around the BBC studio to test the ‘flick and stick’ policy preferred by the Forestry Commission, my thoughts are firmly on dogs! Dogs are a man’s best friend and are frequently found trotting up and down our dog friendly Battle High Street (the trained obedient ones), or straining against their leads with owners in tow, seeking out shopkeepers with doggy treats. We love to accessorise our pooches. Just as Harris Tweeds (for centuries the islanders of Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra have woven this world-famous cloth) have become very popular in the production of human accessories, they are also becoming fashionable for our doggy friends too, adding to the plethora of leather and fabric options. ‘BlossomCo’, in rural Leicestershire, designs and manufactures collars and leads in bright combinations of Harris Tweeds with high quality fittings. An estimated 1,000 tonnes of dog poo is produced by Britain’s eight million dogs every day (says the Keep Britain Tidy group). As their 2010 high-profile campaign stated: ‘There’s no such thing as the dog poo fairy’, and as ‘flick and stick’ will not do for doggy doo-doo in our towns, we still need poo bags! Harris tweed doggy poo bag holders made by ‘Bertie Girl’ in Scotland are innovative and quirky and can be clipped to key rings and dog leads. If all this talk of doo-doo is messing up your day, consider your pet shampoo. Human shampoos can upset a pet’s skin as they are too acidic. ‘WildWash’ shampoos, especially formulated in Somerset, are as natural as possible with no chemical nasties, so kind to pets, their owners and the environment. Their shampoo for pale coats will lighten your pet’s coat beautifully and naturally without stripping it, or harming the skin. Without people recognising it she was suffering a breakdown, and because she was so unhappy she quit her Hospitality Management course, left home and ended up living in a tent for three months. Three years later, at the age of 21, Nicola was diagnosed with lymphoma. She recovered, but suffered another breakdown. “That’s when I was diagnosed with OCD, social phobia, low selfesteem and confidence issues. I needed medication and intense psychotherapy.” Her father didn’t know where to turn for help. He tried to engage her with different organisations that could help, but nothing

worked. Then he came across a Prince’s Trust programme that builds the confidence and motivation of disadvantaged young people. Taking part in everything from BMXbiking to canoeing, Nicola’s confidence flourished during the programme and led her to join Get into Hospitality, a Prince’s Trust programme that is delivered in partnership with Marriott Hotels, and gives unemployed young people the skills they need to gain work in the industry. Nicola gave the programme her best shot and, despite initial nerves, began her first day at the five-star Grosvenor House JW Marriott Hotel in Mayfair, London. “That day completely changed my life.” She gained experience in a number of different departments and asked to extend her placement when the programme ended. Nicola now works full-time in the Pastry Kitchen at Grosvenor House and meets regularly with her Prince’s Trust Progression Mentor to continue to build her resilience. Positive, stable and with a great support network around her, Nicola finally feels in control of her life. She has ambitions of travelling to France to train as a pastry chef and plans to continue her career in the hospitality sector. Upon receiving her award, Nicola said: “I feel so proud and inspired to be here today – it has been an amazing experience and I am really looking forward to the future.”

About The Prince’s Trust Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. Founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976, the charity has supported 13 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion for over 40 years. Many of the young people helped by The Prince’s Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. The Trust’s programmes give vulnerable young people the practical and financial support needed to stabilise their lives, helping develop self-esteem and skills for work. Three in four young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training. The Prince of Wales’s charity has helped 825,000 young people since 1976 and supports over 100 more each day. Independent research by NEF Consulting has found that The Trust has returned £1.4 billion in value to society through its work with disadvantaged young people over the last 10 years alone. In the year ahead, The Trust aims to
support 60,000 vulnerable young people across the UK, helping to give them the skills and confidence to find a job Further information about The Prince’s Trust is available on the website princes-trust.org.uk

ye’s first and only Middle Eastern pop up restaurant, Zephyr, is back on Saturday 1st April, this time at White Vine House on the High Street. Zoe Keen, the founder of Zephyr, works in the City of London by day and is an underground chef cooking up Middle Eastern food by night. Her husband Graham has the task of chief taster. Zephyr’s mission is simply to bring new and exciting flavours to the plates of the people of East Sussex and Kent. “There’s a real excitement around Middle Eastern food at the moment” says Zoe. “People know Greek and Turkish food, however, many aren’t as familiar with the incredibly varied and delicate flavours of Africa and Persia. It’s something a bit different and we intend to treat Rye’s taste buds”. The menu on Saturday 1st April is bringing some favourites back; Patlican (lamb and aubergine stew), tahini and halva chocolate brownies and the delightful strawberry and rose Middle Eton mess are all making a return. We are also introducing some new flavours, including the North African spiced aubergine Chermoula with bulgar wheat. To find out more about this exciting new venture, or if you have an interesting venue and would like to know how you could host one of our next events, please go to www.zephyrpopup.co.uk. am Teodorin Dichter, one of only a few Romanian wine importers in the UK. I have the privilege and the honour to show you some of the most famous and desirable Romanian wines at my wine store in St Leonards on Sea called Vernacular – The Fine Romanian Wine Store. Romania has one of the oldest wine making traditions in the world, its viticulture dates back more than 6,000 years. An ancient Greek legend says Dionysus the god of wine was born there. Romania is now the world’s tenth largest wine producer and the sixth largest among European countries. I have built this store in order to follow my dream of bringing you a taste of Romania. These fabulous wines are often totally unknown here which is why I was looking to create this unique business. A corner of excellent quality wines, at very reasonable prices, where I like to share my passion with everybody. I have been very lucky because this passion for wine has been doubled by the pleasure of meeting new and interesting people. This has been an extraordinary experience which has helped me to integrate into the local community and to create new strong friendships with exceptional people.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017 23 – 27 May 2017
RHS Greening Grey Britain Garden to Provide Vision for the Future RHS Greening Grey Britain garden contains inspirational ideas for the future development of urban spaces • Adapted to climate-change, with ‘low-input, high-impact’ planting, water-sensitive design, biodiversity and habitat features, and pollutionsoaking plants • “Gardens are no longer a decorative ‘nice-to-have’ but essential to create healthy cities”, says designer Nigel Dunnett • Aims to inspire people, communities and urban developers, set in the context of a high-rise apartment block • Will showcase first ever street-art wall at RHS in the history of the show To meet the challenges of climatechange and rapid urban development, the Greening Grey Britain Garden, a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) feature at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (23 – 27 May), sponsored by M&G Investments, showcases how and why plants, nature and gardens have never been needed more in our towns and cities. Professor Nigel Dunnett, says: “Gardens and plants are no longer an optional and decorative ‘nice-to-have’, they’re essential. With pollution levels dangerously high in cities like London, Glasgow and Southampton and flash-flooding
devastating areas of the country last year, we need to all embrace the fact that plants help mitigate against some of the biggest environmental threats facing us today.” Set within an urban context of high-rise and apartment blocks, the RHS Greening Grey Britain garden focuses on practical and creative solutions for where space is at a premium, including balconies, and other spaces on and around the buildings themselves. “The benefits of plants, gardens and greenspaces aren’t appreciated enough,” Nigel adds, “and I hope that by showcasing realistic, simple and sustainable ideas that are directly relevant to home gardeners, community groups and crucially, to urban residential and commercial developers we can make a difference.” Nigel uses plants that soak-up pollution, as well as those which are drought-tolerant. The garden employs water-sensitive design ideas, such as rain gardens and wetland areas to deal with flash flooding. Nigel’s typical ‘low-input, high impact’ planting style is used throughout to deliver a long-lasting colourful visual display with minimal maintenance and high wildlife value. The garden is full of ecological ideas set within a modern and contemporary design.
Large, multi-tiered habitat structures which mirror the human apartment block, also feature in the garden. These ‘Creature Towers’ provide a home for a wide range of wildlife such as insects and birds. Other elements include bike storage, recycling and composting facilities, and edible planting, including a 2.5 metre long communal meeting table, that integrates fruit trees and herbs in its structure. “We know that gardens and gardening bring people together, and there’s now overwhelming evidence that they make us feel better and healthier. These ideas are central to the design. In uncertain times such as those in which we live now, where community spirit is deteriorating, and we are unsure of what lies ahead, there’s never been a greater need for us to engage with each other, and with nature.”, adds Nigel. The garden, which is an unjudged show feature, also contains RHS Chelsea’s first ever street-art wall, created by internationally-acclaimed Sheffield street artists Faunagraphic and Rocket01. Tickets to RHS Chelsea Flower Show are still available to buy at www.rhs.org.uk/ flowershows

The Spring Survival Guide
W
hile the warmer weather and brighter evenings make Spring many people’s favourite time of year, it is set to trigger a wave of problems due to the start of hay fever season. Hay fever affects more than 1 in 5 people in the UK, with one of the most common symptoms being itchy, burning and watery eyes. Expert Optometrist Sarah Farrant explains, “Our eyes and sinuses are very sensitive to environmental changes, which can leave us feeling ‘stuffy’ and uncomfortable. Our body wrongly interprets pollen and dust particles as a threat and tries to expel them. When pollen and particles from the air are swept into our eyes we create lots of watery tears to flush them away.” Here are Sarah’s top tips to help you survive this hay fever season naturally:
1. Banish stuffy noses
Try adding a couple of drops of peppermint oil to a bowl of hot water and inhaling the vapour. It will help clear blocked noses as well as being calming!
2. DUAL protection for itchy eyes
Brand new Hycosan Dual provides protection and relief for allergy affected eyes. It contains all natural ingredients which combine to form a dual barrier against pollen, dust particles and animal hair.
3. Calm those coughs
Manuka honey is 4 times as rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals as regular honey which makes it a great way to stimulate our immune system and prevent throat irritation and coughing.
4. Brighten dark circles
Try using specialist antibacterial wipes Optase™ TTO to cleanse the lids and delicate skin around your eyes. New Optase™ TTO contains tea tree, Hyaluronic Acid, Camomile and Aloe Vera to hydrate and soothe your eyelids.
5. Be Sneeze-free
Replace your coffee with a cup of chamomile tea. Coffee contains histamine which can aggravate allergy symptoms like sneezing. Chamomile, however is a natural antihistamine and a mild sedative so swap that coffee-crash for pure relaxation.
H
ypnotherapy is the use of Hypnosis to help people overcome problems. It is safe, natural and effective. With the increasing demand on mental health services now, more people are turning to complementary therapy for help. Hypnotherapy and NLP are extremely effective therapies that can help with many of life’s issues. When we get caught up with a problem, it is hard to find a way out of it and we believe we are stuck with it. BUT, what if you could look at things from a different angle, hear the inner critic a lot less, feel happier inside yourself? Wouldn’t that be fantastic?! If you would like to lose weight, stop smoking, be more confident, get over a fear or phobia and be focussed for your exams or tests, then Hypnotherapy could really help you. I have been in practice for 14 years and worked with children (age 4+), teenagers, adults and couples and privileged to witness the amazing transformations people are capable of making. Maybe now is the time to make a change? Penny Hawkins. Enhanced DBS checked. Clinics in Hawkhurst and Tonbridge www.pennyhawkins.co.uk / 01892 750255
