Fuel & Fire Services An Introduction to Wood Stoves
W
ood-burning stoves are great for home heating but also provide an attractive feature in any home. These cast-iron stoves have been popular around the world for hundreds of years, providing aesthetic beauty and practical warmth wherever they are used. There are a number of advantages to wood stoves. Carbon dioxide (CO2) contributes to climate change, so anything that can be done to help reduce the amount of CO2
in the atmosphere can help us to tackle climate change. Burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil releases their stored carbon into the air as CO2. These resources took millions of years to create, but we are burning them up within a few centuries – and at a far faster rate than the global carbon cycle can cope with. In contrast burning wood is largely carbon neutral, with the CO2 absorbed as young trees grow, compensating for that
released by burning. Trees planted for wood fuel can provide a never-ending supply of wood – as long as trees are replanted as they are felled, the whole process is renewable. The carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by burning wood will be locked up again and stored by the new trees grown for the next crop. The only increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide would come from transport and

processing. It is therefore one of the most climate-friendly forms of heat available to us. Wood stoves are like small fireplaces. They are inexpensive and can be built into a home or added later. They look great, are safe, can effectively heat an entire house, and are ecologically responsible. There are countless designs for wood furnaces. Many of them are small, free standing structures with long, iron legs and elaborately designed bodies, featuring engravings and ornamentation. The wood stoves have a pipe that can either go through the ceiling or through a wall to expel smoke. A well-placed wood stove can heat an entire home, especially if located centrally within the house.
Wood is relatively inexpensive, easy to find, and can be replenished, unlike many other fuels. There are a myriad of wood types to choose from, all of which have their own burning qualities and properties. Ash is considered by many to be one of best woods for burning, it produces a steady flame and good heat output. It can be burnt when green but like all woods, it burns best when dry. Beech burns very much like ash, but does not burn well when green. Hawthorn is a good traditional firewood that has a slow burn with good heat output. Yew is a good burning wood as it has a slow burn, and produces a very good heat output.
Kristel Fireplaces have been installing stoves and fireplaces in Kent and Sussex for 35 years. We are a family run business and pride ourselves on high quality workmanship and personal service and advice from the initial survey right through to installations. We have a wide selection of Woodburning Stoves and Multifuel Stoves, Fireplaces, Gas and Electric Fires on display in our showroom and are stockists of most leading makes. Installations are carried out by HETAS approved installers and we also do a supply only service and offer free home surveys and estimates during the day, or if it is more convenient in the evenings. We carry in stock Flue Pipes, Chimney Liners, Pots, Cowls and fireside accessories.
Apple is a very good wood that bums slow and steady when dry, it has small flame size, and does not produce sparking or spitting.

event, celebrating our animals and raising money to care for the 8,000 dogs and cats that come through our gates, abandoned and terrified each year. Once again, we’re thrilled that so many supporters and friends of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home gave so generously of their time to make the event so successful.’’ The Headline Sponsor of this year’s Collars & Coats Gala Ball was Vitabiotics SuperDog. SuperDog is committed to maintaining health and vitality in dogs, and is from the pet division of pioneering British company Vitabiotics. The Gala’s Champagne Reception was exclusively sponsored by Medivet the Vet with almost 30 years’ experience. Medivet is passionate about providing amazing client and patient care throughout their 141 practices. It costs Battersea over £10m to care for its dogs and cats every year, and with no government funding, the Collars & Coats Gala Ball is all about helping to increase awareness of the important work the charity does each and every day of the year to offer a second chance in life to thousands of animals. Last year over 8,000 dogs and cats needed Battersea’s care and attention to help find them the best possible new homes. • For further information on Battersea Dogs & Cats Home please visit www.battersea. org.uk. Dr Christian Jessen said: It’s such a good night and it’s such as an important cause. It’s a very important event to raise funds for the dogs and cats at the Home. I really like to do something for creatures who need us and who, let’s face it, we don’t always treat so well in all parts of the world. Hilary Alexander said: I think it’s fantastic. I love the red carpet and the dogs in the guard of honour. It brings home how cruel people can be. A lot of the dogs here are strays or have come in because they were brought for Christmas and then people couldn’t be bothered to care for them.

Dame Jacqueline Wilson said: I am very proud to be an Ambassador. I come every year. It’s a delightful occasion, the highlight of the year. It’s such an important night. We’re here all united. We all come from such different backgrounds but what we all have in common is that we are all here for the dogs and cats. Debbie, Kim, and Joni Sledge said: We were delighted and honoured to headline the Collars & Coats Gala Ball. Battersea Dogs & Cats Homes’ work in transforming the lives of abandoned dogs is incredible. We feel privileged to collaborate with an organization, which has committed to providing care, love and respect for vulnerable animals for over 150 years. These are three principles we have lived by throughout our life and careers and strived to defend though our music.

Pet Services
The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare was established in 1976. A cornerstone of the Trust’s founding policy then, as now, was to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. Our Animal Rescue Centre in Hadlow Down, nr Uckfield in East Sussex, provides a base for the animal rescue and re-homing work. Over the years, the Rescue Centre has also become a permanent home to many animals that it is not possible or desirable to re-home. Funds are raised with the generous support of individual donations, legacies, local fund raising, animal sponsors and our charity shops in Uckfield, Hailsham and Heathfield. We receive no Local Authority, Government or Lottery funding. Please look out for our Christmas Food Appeal boxes, where any donation left for the animals in our care is much appreciated.

A quick visit for lunch to Callenders of Hailsham yesterday led to us booking in for our family get together. The menu of all traditional festive local produce is amazing. As we sat under the fabulous stained glass window and just relaxed, it was the polite and friendly service that convinced us that this was the place for us. Our neighbours had their wedding anniversary do here and everything was wonderful. Menus start from under ten pounds for two courses and all wines and beers are sensibly priced too. Top quality, award winning modern British food and service, we can’t wait to go back. I think I shall have Prawns to start, or maybe the Smoked Duck, followed by a Steamed Venison Pudding, with a glass of Rioja, and the Light and Zingy Lemon Crème Brule to finish. I really can’t wait. Check out all their menus on the web and give them a call. You really should book your table today.

A TALE OF MADNESS & MAJESTY What better time than this to portray a narcissistic head of state in a story rich with political maneuvering. From the tempestuous beginnings when Lear divides his kingdom between his daughters, there is a sense of imminent rage, which eventually erupts into an orgy of bloodshed before the action finally yields to the wastelands of pathos at the end. This is truly Bowler Crabs greatest production yet, full of standout performances. Paddy Cooper makes an excellent and totally believable Lear, playing the character with true grandeur and majesty. Notable for both her performance and versatility is Leanne Clark as Lear’s trusty and uncommonly wise Fool, also playing Cordelia, but every cast member deserves to be congratulated in this triumph of a production from Stephen John’s Bowler Crab Productions!

Give Eastbourne Samaritans a lift this Christmas Eastbourne Samaritans are asking local residents and businesses to ‘give them a lift’ this Christmas by helping them fund a new mobility access lift for their Eastbourne base. Many people don’t know that Eastbourne Samaritans is an independent charity. Based in Bolton Road in the town centre, the charity has to raise all the funds needed to support its often life-saving work and to run its operations. A vital part of its work is providing a base that those in distress or feeling suicidal can drop into. Open 10.30am till 10.30pm every day of the year, ‘The Haven’ in Bolton Road is ideally located but as an older three-storey building it can be a real challenge for some visitors and volunteers to access. The charity has worked up exciting plans to install a much needed mobility access lift in its Bolton Road base to ensure that everyone who needs its services, and everyone who wants to volunteer, can access and get around the building. Over the past few years Eastbourne Samaritans have already raised £100,000 towards this vital project and now need the support of local residents and businesses to raise the final £25,000. If you are able to support Eastbourne Samaritans, every single donation will count. They have set up a Just Giving campaign which allows residents and businesses to give online, but they would also like to hear from local businesses who would like to become corporate sponsors for this project. To support this appeal online go to: https://www.justgiving. com/campaigns/charity/samaritans-eastbournedistrict/lift or if you would like to make a donation by cheque please make it out to Eastbourne Samaritans and send it to The Samaritans of Eastbourne and District, 13 Bolton Road, Eastbourne, BN21 3JT . You can also contact the Eastbourne and District branch by email at treasurer@eastbournesamaritans.org
