The Community Support Worker goes with the person with dementia and their carer to visit activities and help assess their needs and promote a choice of activities. Following a successful introduction of an activity the service works with the carer and/ or Social Worker to secure funding and provide a phased handover to a suitably skilled and experienced service provider or Personal Assistant. 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada, so what better time to visit this wonderful country?

Whether travelling with family, as a couple or on your own, Canada is a diverse destination that offers something for everyone. With plentiful wildlife, friendly natives, opportunities to view the Northern Lights, adventure activities, gourmet food and wine, and stunning scenery around every corner, Canada is a must for your next holiday with Southern Cross Travel. Our Canada Specialist, Anneka, talks through her ultimate Canada holiday itinerary, incorporating city life and the Rockies with a ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Canadian experience – observing Grizzly Bears in their natural habitat. “Fly from London Gatwick or Heathrow to Calgary, pick up your hire car and drive onto Banff and Lake Louise to explore the beautiful surroundings. Whilst here, let Southern Cross Travel book an evening wildlife safari for your chance to observe native animals in their natural habitat. How about a horse ride over the Rocky Mountains? Visit the Columbia Icefield and ride on the Icefield Explorer to view the Athabasca Glacier, before continuing along the scenic road for a 2 night stay in Jasper.

All aboard! Embark on the iconic Rocky Mountaineer – the most luxurious way to travel through the Rockies. For that ‘Once in a Lifetime’ holiday, Southern Cross Travel recommend an upgrade to Gold Leaf Service for panoramic views and 5* dining en route. After your overnight stop in Kamloops, re-board your train, arriving into cosmopolitan Vancouver. Spend a few days exploring this cosmopolitan city set on the water with the wonderful backdrop of Grouse Mountain.

Next, collect your hire car downtown and drive to Horseshoe Bay to board the ferry to Vancouver Island, then head north to Campbell River. After an overnight stay here, take a scenic float plane to rustic, floating Knight Inlet Lodge, set in Glendale Cove amidst steep cliffs that plummet into deep glacial-fed waters - home to a large concentration of grizzly bears.

After a welcome orientation, take a boat cruise to view the bears feeding within 50m of the shore. Stay for 2 or 3 nights at this incredible Lodge, which offers one of the few protected anchorages in the inlet, and it is here that you will begin each day’s adventure. As well as bear viewing, you can enjoy a number of other tours, depending on the season, including a marine wildlife tour, whale watching, photography opportunies and kayaking tours. Canada is a spectacular country, full of exciting and unique experiences which will make you want to return again and again. So, what are you waiting for? Get that suitcase out from under the bed and make 2017 the year that Southern Cross Travel turn your holiday dream into a reality!” Contact Anneka, your local, certified Canada Specialist to discuss your holiday options on anneka@southerncrosstravel.co.uk or call the Southern Cross Travel team in Wadhurst (01892 783896) or Rye (01797 229200). We will be delighted to arrange an appointment to plan and book your holiday to Canada.

Laura Hamilton Laura Hamilton is a best known as one of the faces of Channel 4’s popular television show ‘A Place in the Sun’ and has hands on experience when it comes to property. She started renovating houses aged 19, and has developed 10 properties to date. Laura seldom relaxes, she thrives on being a busy working mum to her children Rocco and Tahlia, and in May 2016 released her first fitness app ‘Laura Hamilton’s Total Body Workout’ which is available on the iPhone & Android.

H

aving presented the action adventure show ‘Fort Boyard’ for ITV for the last 4 years, Laura is always keen to take on a physical challenge herself. In 2014 she took part in the first series of ‘The Jump’ (just four weeks after the birth of her first son), and in 2011 Laura was crowned runner of the popular ITV series ‘Dancing on Ice’ where she wowed audiences with her headbanger. A keen writer, Laura writes a regular blog for ‘Hello!’ magazine. She travel writes for ‘The Mail on Sunday’ as well as well as other national publications, and is also a guest writer for ‘A Place in the a Sun’ magazine. Laura began her television career working behind the scenes as an assistant floor manager. After four years working on a variety of shows, she moved to the other side of the camera and started working as a children’s TV presenter. Few people know Laura can both sing and dance. She has appeared on the stage several times as ‘Cinderella’ in pantomime alongside Steve Guttenberg, Stephen Gately and Bradley Walsh.

Travel Show Pages.indd 3

It was a real surprise for many of her guests at her wedding when she sang with the band whilst her father (a former Womble!) played on the drums. What’s On Magazine met up with Laura at The Telegraph Travel Show in London. Laura, how much of your time is spent travelling? On average I spend two weeks out of every month overseas, predominantly in Europe but sometimes I am further afield. For anyone who doesn’t know the show I help house hunters find their dream home overseas. It is not as glamorous as it sounds because we do have budget constraints so we cannot always stay in luxury hotels. I am fortunate though because I get to combine my love of travel with my love of property. Are you able to travel with your children? Yes, that’s the best thing, I have got two young children now, Rokko is 3 and Thalia is 19 months and they both travel with me,

22/01/2017 19:24:12

and they have done since they were three weeks old. Anyone that says you cannot travel with children definitely needs to come and see me because my two have now travelled extensively. We have been to South Africa where they went on a township tour, they have been to America three times as well as Majorca, the Middle East, Italy, Sardinia, Austria, Cyprus and we are even going to Lapland next week. The sad thing of course is that at that age they probably won’t remember it all. They are very confident children and I think that’s what travel does, it makes you confident. One of my favourite sayings is ‘the world is a book and those who don’t travel read merely a page of that book’. Have you got any new projects that you are now presently working on? Yes, I am always being asked by different people ‘where should we go on holiday’. So I decided to set up a travel review site which hopefully will become the ‘go to’ site for travel inspiration. It is called ‘Hamilton’s Hotspots’. I will be giving away a prize every month to one of my website subscribers and there are lots of other things that I plan to include on the site. How would you define luxury travel? Well, whether you prefer a high end luxury hotel or luxury boutique hotel, for me luxury is often based around service, but it is not just about service, it’s about interior design, I like good bed linen, the toiletries, the location of the hotel and my husband and I also like good spa facilities. I don’t have a preference as to whether it is a large chain hotel or a small boutique hotel. Of course getting there is also another important factor. If you are travelling in Europe then Eurostar can be an attractive proposition allowing you to enjoy the countryside, scenery while you are travelling. If you are looking at airlines flying into Europe then most people would perhaps look at British Airways. I like BA but I am actually a frequent flyer with Monarch. They have recently added quite a few new routes to their network which are really worth checking out, they include Stockholm, Zagreb and Porto, and depending on which aircraft there are extra leg room seats which are included in the price if you choose the ‘extras’ option when you book the ticket. What about some suggestions for travelling to in 2017? Top of my list in the UK would be London. There is a whole range of new luxury

Travel Show Pages.indd 4

hotels that are going to be opening this year. If you are travelling as a couple then a hotel you should look out for is a place called ‘The Ned’. It’ is a new members club/restaurant/hotel and it’s situated in a Grade 1 Listed building. I am also a fan of the Four Seasons range of hotels and they are opening a new one at 10 Trinity Square in a Grade 2 listed building overlooking the Tower of London. You should also look out for The Curzon Hotel in Shoreditch which is set to become one of the coolest hotels in London and there is also going to be a Paris Hotspot Hotel called Costes which is opening near Sloan Square, and also a new hotel in Convent Garden which is backed by none other than Robert de Niro. Any recommendations for a countryside break? Well if you have never stayed in a tree house before, then Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa in the New Forest is worth checking out. It is a tree house experience like no other, they have hot tubs out on the balcony and though quite pricey it is suitable for a family. They also have other accommodation on site at a lower cost. Where would you travel to in Europe? France is a beautiful country to visit, the food, the scenery and of course the wine are all fabulous. I have stayed in the George Cinq in Paris and if you are travelling to Paris you should definitely go into the hotel reception area. The floral display is like no other, it is really incredible. A boutique option in Paris would be the hotel Costes. As I said there is one opening in London and I am hoping it will be as cool as the one in Paris. I spent my childhood travelling around France with my parents in camp sites and caravans and I think that is where my love of travel comes from. I discovered a beautiful place called Carcassonne. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site and it is 18 kilometers East of Toulouse. Not far from Carcassonne there is also a beautiful boutique hotel called ‘Domaines Mousset’. Do you own a property abroad? My husband’s family purchased a property in San Pedro, near Puerto Banus in Spain over ten years ago, so I am there quite regularly. If you don’t own your own Spanish property there are many amazing hotels and I enjoy travelling to these even though I have the luxury of being able to stay in the family home.

Villa Padierna Palace is a spectacular hotel near Marbella and it is actually Michelle Obama’s favourite hotel in Spain. If you are travelling with young children then Forte Village in Sardinia is well worth a look. It is situated in 55 acres of pine forest, there is a football academy, a rugby academy, netball, go cart, dance and magic academy, the facilities list goes on and on. Children definitely will not get bored here but of course it all comes at a price. What are your favourite ski resorts? There is a property in St. Anton, Austria called ‘Das Mooser’. It is a boutique chalet hotel and you don’t have to be able to ski to visit this place because the scenery is spectacular. As I said I am just off to Lapland so I am not sure how I am going to cope with temperatures of minus 30 but if you want to find out you can always follow me on Hamilton’s Hotspots. Do you get any special treatment when you are travelling privately because of who you are? When I am travelling I travel under my married name of Laura Goward, so it is fairly unlikely that anyone would realise who I was. There are occasions when journalists get invited to review a hotel so the hotel obviously makes everything extra special for you which means perhaps you don’t get a true picture of the venue. Do you have a good standard of hotel that you stay in when you are filming ‘A Place In The Sun? Unfortunately because it is a TV show we do have a strict budget, so while it would be nice to be staying in 5 Star luxury that is not the case. We often struggle to find accommodation especially in the school holiday season so we often use self catering facilities booked through companies like ‘Air BnB’. What have you got planned for the rest of the year? This year I will be filming 20 episodes from now until November so it is mostly two weeks on and two weeks off. Between those times I am renovating a post office. Can you tell us about that? I live in Purley and there was an old property there which was a former Post Office, the couple who previously lived there came to me and asked me to help them buy a property abroad for their retirement.

22/01/2017 19:24:30

That was two years ago and little did I know that just before Christmas I would end up saying to my husband ‘why don’t we try and buy this property and bring the Post Office back for the community.’ It is the first time I have taken on a renovation that involves a commercial space and so I have got a presentation to make to the Post Office to get their agreement. We plan to develop a coffee shop alongside the Post Office and create a real community spirit. I will have a manager in there running it for me and we will also have an artisan shop selling products that I have discovered on my travels.

Thank You Laura

Birds of a feather.. Tho’ I am a keen birder and love watching my garden visitors I have only once ever gone out searching for a particular species, I became a grumpy, miserably, disappointed old man at never seeing it. The beautiful Waxwing is a winter visitor to these shores, they first arrive in October on the east coast from Scotland to East Anglia, but birds move inland in search of food, they love berries, particularly Rowan and Hawthorn, but also Cotoneaster and Rose Hips.

Joe and I rarely have the opportunity to go out birding together but as there was a flock of some 33 hanging about at East Grinstead we arranged to pop over to try and see them. Thankfully my age old desire to clap my eyes on these fantastic looking birds was fulfilled. One very happy old man. ..........
