SPECTACULAR BAROQUE MESSIAH
Following Eastbourne’s Phoenix Choir’s Italian Baroque concert last winter, director Michael Fields again brings world class performers to February’s unabridged presentation of Handel’s Messiah. Internationally renowned soprano Evelyn Tubb, who thrilled the audience at last year’s concert, now returns as the choir’s patron as well as star soloist. Tenor Julian Podger, also among the world’s leading early music voices, comes to us from Vienna. Phoenix additionally features two rising stars on the international scene: Johanna Kroedel, currently making her name in Hanover, will sing the alto solos, while Jussi Lehtipuu comes from Helsinki to sing “The Trumpet Shall Sound” and other stirring bass solos as part of his busy European performance schedule. Outstanding baroque trumpeter David Staff returns to provide that resounding trumpet, joining a period instrument orchestra led by Swiss violinist Sabine Stoffer. This fine performance, beginning at 7o’clock, includes a refreshment interval and takes place in the magnificent, easily accessible, towncentre Church of St Saviour’s.
Oven Wizards Testimonials
Just had our double oven cleaned by Paul, so very pleased with my oven, looks brand new! Would not hesitate in recommending Oven Wizards. Denise Gerrard-Glass. (Hastings) We are so delighted with the oven clean that you did for us today, it is absolutely fantastic. Thank you for working so hard to achieve the results. Dr Blair (Eastbourne) Compared with other oven cleaning companies I have used in the past Paul went the extra mile when cleaning my oven. He stripped out the racks, back panel and fan and also removed and split the oven door to clean the dirty glass that I could not get to. I will definitely recommend the service to my friends. Vicky (Bexhill on Sea)

Our unique bespoke process utilises a lifestyle approach to promote the benefits of each individual property focusing on vendors’ comments to highlight personal characteristics that show a home, rather than simply a house. The more prestigious a property, the smaller the number of potential purchasers. As such, we understand the need to market your property further afield. The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.
If you have any questions about letting your property, or would like free, no obligation advice please call us on 01424 751805. -8-

High Street V’s. Online By Kate Lovering
You may find that the New Year is just the catalyst you need to decide to move house and consequently sell your current home. Ten years ago, to initiate selling you would have called a couple of your local estate agents for an appraisal, probably moaned about the commission but chose an agent based on their valuation and pitch of their agency. Today the route to market is not so clearly laid out. There is a choice between the traditional high street agent with their commission based fees or the emerging number of ‘fixed fee’ online agents. Over the next couple of months, I will look at the benefits and drawbacks of using a high street agent versus an online agent, their value for money and try to make sense of the middle ground proposed by ‘hybrid’ agents. Let us start at the beginning; selecting your agent. If opting for the high street agent, you will usually have 3 or 4 renowned agents in your local town, which you will then invite over, they will the try to sell themselves, while giving you a valuation of your home. You will then make an informed decision based on their visit. When selecting an online agent, their location no longer acts as a filter, reputation will play a part, but as the online industry is still in its infancy any decision based on reputation is a bit of a punt. Your decision will probably be based on what the online agent can offer and at what cost. After browsing online agencies to try and understand their packages and pricing structures I can conclude that there is no such thing as a standard online package. Each website offers different packages at different prices and include varying levels of service. A basic package on one website will include the provision of a floor plan while on another this will be an extra at an additional cost. Some websites require upfront payment while others expect payment on completion and I found one website where you could pay a proportion upfront and the remainder on completion, however this option fell into another package option altogether and was more expensive purely for entitlement to split payment. As for what the packages offer in relation to viewings, well that seems to be another pricing structure altogether. Some include viewings, while others expect the onus to fall on the home owner, some offered ‘pay per view’ and some packages include a set number of accompanied viewings after which time you the have to pay an additional fee for more viewings. Without location as a determinant, this crazy jumble of packages and pricing structures is your only point of comparison. Online may look cheaper, however you will have wasted a day of your life sifting through all the online options just to achieve appointment. The process of getting your house to market has barely begun, and I will look at the next steps next month. Polecat Properties

Happy New Year! This is the right time for you to do some serious self care and mental hygiene with a few sessions of Hypnosis, Meditation and Imagery! with Paul Draga www.minddox.com
Meditation, or contemplation, is an extraordinary technique that I use and share with my clients to make it possible to reach the hidden parts of the self. In getting in touch with the inner mind, shrouded as it is behind the busy conscious, analytical mind, we gain a different, mindful perspective of our being and all the thoughts, emotions, reaction patterns, attitudes and beliefs that comprise it. Reaching and spending time in this inner space is healthy and healing in itself but it is also the place where we can make possible the changes that we want to bring about in our lives. I use meditative techniques in conjunction with your imagination to help you reveal your own unique, privileged and personal contemplative space which you will be able to use even after you are no longer in sessions with me. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis are techniques that I use and share with my clients to achieve a state of inward focused
027_January027.indd 1
attention that enables us to reach into the deepest recesses of our self where lie both the roots of old conflicts that still affect us now and the springs of healing and personal growth. In hypnosis, whether it is self-induced (through the self-hypnosis techniques that I share with you) or mediated (when I guide you step by step during sessions), the mind concentrates inwardly and becomes open and interested to receive beneficial suggestions such as, for example, to change and improve current thinking and behaviour patterns. Moreover, you will find that just spending time in this hypnotic state is pleasant, healthy and healing; adding wholesome and skilful suggestions can help you adjust and transform a range of upsetting habits, beliefs, attitudes, and bothersome situations that you find yourself in over and over. During the sessions, I guide you into hypnosis and then through your own transformational process to achieve what you desire to change or improve; I will also practice with you self-hypnosis techniques that you can then use on your own.
With the advance of science, we now know much more about how the brain and the body functions in hypnosis and meditation and have a better understanding of what happens during these states. Hypnotic and contemplative techniques have been successfully used to resolve a range of

problems that hinder the optimal social, relationship and personal functioning of an ever increasing number of people.
From circumstances such as unexplained
fears, unchecked emotions, too much worrying, difficulty sleeping, struggling with relationships, lacking confidence, to unwanted habits and intrusive thoughts, they have been found to resolve with a few sessions of hypnosis.
Moreover, hypnosis and meditation are used to optimize the general level of wellbeing, functioning and performance of people like you. If you are interested to book sessions with me or to find out more, please call 074727 58939, email at paul@ minddox.com, or visit my website: www.minddox.com

Vincent Simone & Flavia Cacace Fresh from wowing audiences across the country, TV’s Strictly Come Dancing favourites VINCENT SIMONE and FLAVIA CACACE bring their brand new show to the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne from Wednesday 28 - Saturday 31 January 2015.
F
ormer World Champions, Vincent and Flavia have been dancing together for twenty years and stole the hearts of the British public with their breathtaking Argentine Tango on TV’s Strictly Come Dancing. Since the dazzling duo launched Midnight Tango in 2010, they have thrilled over half a million people across the UK both on tour and in London’s West End. Dance ‘Til Dawn is directed by Olivier Award winning choreographer and director Karen Bruce who directed Vincent and Flavia’s Olivier Award nominated show, Midnight Tango. Fusing musical theatre, dance, romance and comedy into a smash hit spectacle, Dance ‘Til Dawn transports you to the seductive age of Los Angeles in the 1940s. In the midst of a Hollywood film shoot leading man Bobby Burns is murdered and a romance develops between beautiful starlet Sadie Strauss (Flavia Cacace) and her handsome lover Tony DeLuca (Vincent Simone). As a plot to frame
Tony DeLuca unfolds, the duo use their flawless footwork and spellbinding choreography to Tango and Quickstep their way out of trouble and into each other’s arms. Dance ‘Til Dawn is an unforgettable evening of timeless sophistication, breathtaking world class dance with stunning sets, glamorous costumes and a full live band performing iconic numbers including Feeling Good, Moon River and Stand By Me. Joining Vincent and Flavia are Oliver Darley as The Voice, Teddy Kempner as Tommy Dubrowski, Abbie Osmon as Lana Clemenza, Lucy Banfield, Faye Best, Tyman Boatwright, Ivan De Freitas, Ben Harris, Jamie-Ray Hartshorne, Annie Kitchen, Tanya Robb, Tom Scanlon, Giovanni Spano, Danny Stowell, Gemma Whitelam and Anne Woodside. Dance ‘Til Dawn is produced by Adam Spiegel Productions.

What’s On Magazine spoke exclusively to Flavia and Vincent during their West End run while they were preparing for the spring tour which starts in Eastbourne. Flavia. Can you tell us about the show and how it all started? We did three tours and three West end runs with Midnight Tango and then we were offered the opportunity for a brand new show so we came up with Dance ‘Til Dawn. Our main objective was for it to be very different from Midnight Tango. We wanted something unusual that would surprise the audiences who supported us for the last three years. We also wanted to perform Ballroom and Latin which we didn’t really do in the previous show, this is really what we have been performing for the last twenty years. Together with Karen Bruce, we came up with the theatre production which is set in the 1940’s Hollywood glamour era. We have kind of pushed the barriers a little bit with the storytelling so it is quite an intricate plot. It is written to be a very entertaining comedy and we have a cast of about twenty performers as well as Vincent and I. The cast are all West End performers, singers and dancers and so we fused what Vincent and I do which is a kind of Ballroom, Latin and Tango with West End dancing, singing and performing. Do you or Vincent have a dialogue to remember or is that narrated? No we don’t have lines, we just tell the story through dance. There are two main characters who narrate the show and although the script is quite intricate it is also very light hearted. It is very much a dance show but you also have the live band and the story entertaining the audience. Our set is really beautiful and we take you from the Hollywood Hills to a pool party and a
gangster’s den so it really is a changing scene all the time. You have over thirty numbers in your previous Midnight Tango show, so is there still lots in this one? Yes it is a jam packed show and once it starts it doesn’t pause until the end, there are various solos and group numbers but everything is connected so you wouldn’t really count them as individual numbers, it is just a continual flowing process. When did you start planning it? We actually started working on it while we were still performing Midnight Tango. It started with the script and then we worked on developing the dance numbers after that. Vincent and I started choreographing our various solos after that and then we had about four weeks with the cast. At the beginning of 2014 we had six week tour which was our launch of the show and during that time we were lucky enough to secure the Aldwych Theatre in London for our West End run over the Christmas period. Did you have to make any changes from the original concept? Yes we did. We had brilliant reviews on tour but there were things that we wanted to change after taking the feedback from the audience into account. We spent a lot of time before the West End run making small subtle changes to get it just right Did you find it easier developing Dance ‘Till Dawn having already done the Midnight Tango show? If anything it probably made it harder. We kind of went into Midnight Tango a bit blind because it wasn’t really something we were used to. We gained the experience as we toured. Because it was such a success it seemed harder to come back with a second
show which had to be even better. We also realised at that point how hard theatre is performing eight shows a week. When you are working with Vincent and Karen to plan the show do you each have your own responsibilities or is it a creative mix? Initially it is just one big storyboard where everyone throws in their ideas covering the music and the story and after that we concentrate more on our own specialities so Vincent and I will be working on our solo performances and Karen looks after more of the West End numbers with her dancers and later on we fused the two together. Karen overlooks the whole direction of it. Do you have a separate exercise regime or is it just a question of keeping fit with the dancing all the time? Once you get into the routine of performing eight shows a week you get to know your body quite well. We rehearse usually from 10am- 6pm so the main thing is the warm up and the cool down together with a basic maintenance approach such as stretching and sports massage. If I have a week or two weeks off then I will go to the gym and work on my core stability with free weights. What plans have you got after you finish the tour in May? I think we have got our hearts and minds set on a third production, there is no two without three as they say so I think we love to create a trilogy. Is it true that you wanted to make a film based on dance? Yes that has always been one of the things at the back of our minds, we have done bits and pieces such as filming numbers in 3-D so it has make us quite enthusiastic about going down that road but we also love theatre so we will have to see what direction we are taken in. Tell us about your tutorial App.? It came about because we used to teach quite a lot both classes and private lessons but obviously with the touring we don’t get the time to do that so much. We still have got lots of requests so we came up with the idea of producing the App. which gets you started and allows you to learn in your own time. The idea is that it gives you enough confidence for you to go and find a local school to continue with and carry on. Vincent. What type of audience are you attracting with the show so far? I would say we would have a wide range of ages and it seems to appeal to a great variety of people. We have lots of children who come to the matinee performances with their parents. The Friday nights are
028_January028.indd 4
14/12/2014 19:08:18
passionate and intense whereas Dance ‘Till Dawn is more like a comedy with a love story running alongside it. There are still passionate dances but it is a really different show than the previous one. We have live singers and West End performers who work really well alongside our dancing. Did you have to learn any acting skills for the new show? Yes it was really hard at the beginning because I couldn’t act without dancing. It was really basic things like just walking on the stage. I am so used to dancing in a space that just having to walk normally was difficult. My instinct just tells me to dance all the time Did you both cast all of the other characters? Yes we had about four or five hundred dancers auditioning, I couldn’t turn up for the first auditions because my partner and I were having a baby in Ireland at the time and also I was silly enough to go into the jungle just after that on ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’. I was there to go through the last thirty or forty dancers so I helped picked those and I was also there when it came time to pick the singers and actors Did you watch any of the ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ this season? Of course, yes, and I still cannot believe I was in it. It is brilliant and of course I danced with Edwina Curry who is one of the contestants in the jungle this season. She is just so fearless and I am glad she did so well.
more of the younger generation so really it is a mixed audience. Have you had some of your Strictly friends come to see it? Yes we had Brendan, Pasha, Camilla Dallerup, Robin Windsor and a few others. They will all come eventually. I am still getting texts to let me know when they can make it. The support is very good but a lot of them are obviously doing their thing on Strictly at the moment. Will you be playing with a live orchestra throughout the tour? Yes, they are really amazing. They have worked with Jools Holland and have their own big gigs and they have worked with many top artists.
Will you be filming one of the performances to sell as a DVD? We did that with Midnight Tango and it sold really well but I am not sure if we will do it this time. There is a lot of work involved, we also did a live screening performance last time but again it’s a huge technical headache to do that. We lose lots of space because we have to set cameras up in the performance area so it is quite a big day and I am not sure whether we will tackle that one this time. What did you learn from your last show that you could incorporate in this one? We wanted to take the show in a completely different direction so Midnight Tango was
How will you spend Christmas? We are working mostly over Christmas but I do have my family coming to visit me in Guilford. So I will see them in the morning or the afternoon when I have just one show or sometimes they will come with me into town and we will spend as much time as we can together, we are not working on Christmas Day. I then have another week of performances after which I have a couple of weeks off before starting the tour in Eastbourne at the end of January. I have already booked to go to Dubai for a couple of weeks and will spend the rest of the time after that with my family. Flavia was mentioning that you are already thinking about a third show? Yes we are already talking about it. We have lots of ideas but it is just a question of deciding on the best ones to go with but I am sure we will come up with something amazing. So will you not be working on ‘Strictly’ for the next year or so?
- 31 -
028_January028.indd 5
14/12/2014 19:08:34
Well we did it for eight years and we gave it everything that we possibly could and danced with every type of partner you could imagine, so it is good to have a break and this also allows us to dance much more together. On ‘Strictly’ we hardly saw each other. We are both at our peak in terms of performance ability so this is the time we should be dancing together most of all. You are a keen car and bike enthusiast, what are you currently driving? I have a couple of sponsorships so they give me some nice cars. I have a Nissan 370Z Sports car but I am looking to change it quite soon. I used to change my women now I can only change my car. It is difficult on tour because I have to drive to where ever we are performing and then leave the car parked up for a week. A sports car isn’t very practical and not very comfortable on that sort of journey. I will be changing my car before Christmas for something

Garden & Building Services
Making the right choice . . .
Danson Tree Care is increasingly coming across customers, especially the elderly that have been ‘ripped off’ by rogue traders. “I have been called to several jobs lately by desperate customers, after their trees and gardens have been left in a terrible state. Often with more money being demanded to finish a job. Like many other professional tree surgeons, we pay thousands of pounds for our insurances and credentials, not just to cover us, but to cover YOU. Therefore, we urge consumers, if in doubt, to ask for proof of insurances and credentials before giving the go ahead, and not to hand over payment until a job is complete and satisfactory. If a company is above board and professional, this should NOT be a problem. Nick Danson, owner of Danson Tree Care. A very Happy New Year to all our customers – old and new.

Prince Harry’s charity unveils plan for Chelsea garden Sentebale garden will highlight plight of some of South Africa’s most vulnerable children. Sentebale, the charity founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, is to create a show garden at the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden – designed by Matt Keightley, head designer of Maidenhead landscaping firm Rosebank, and winner of the 2014 People’s Choice Award with his Hope on the Horizon garden – aims to raise awareness of Sentebale’s work in providing healthcare and education to Lesotho’s most vulnerable children. Sponsored by the David Brownlow Charitable Foundation, the garden will see Keightley draw inspiration from Sentebale’s Mamohato Children’s Centre, a new facility providing residential camps for children affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and extreme poverty, which is opening in Lesotho next year.
The garden will give visitors a taste of Lesotho and the vibrant atmosphere of the camp and will include a rock/waterscape feature, which is representative of the mountainous region in this part of South Africa. The garden’s official name will be announced in January 2015. HRH the Prince of Wales’ Foundation for Building Community has advised Sentebale in the design of the Mamohato Children’s Centre using its expertise in delivering a sustainable development that provides a marked improvement in quality of life - in this case, the lives of thousands of young people who have been stigmatised by loss of a parent, who live with disabilities and those trying to come to terms with
living with HIV. The designs took on board the needs of the young residents, while reflecting the country’s rich culture and magnificent natural surroundings. Cathy Ferrier, Chief Executive of Sentebale, said: “Matt Keightley has created a truly inspirational garden that will be a representation of the experience that the children in Lesotho go through during our Mamohato camp.”

Senior Living
The Carers Breaks Dementia Engagement Service The Carers Breaks Dementia Engagement Service is a free service that works with people with dementia and their carers. Following a carers’ assessment of need a Community Support Worker works with the person with dementia and their carer for 6-8 weeks to explore activities in the home or local community that the person with dementia can enjoy. The Community Support Worker goes with the person with dementia and their carer to visit activities and help assess their needs and promote a choice of activities. Following a successful introduction of an activity the service works with the carer and/ or Social Worker to secure funding and provide a phased handover to a suitably skilled and experienced service provider or Personal Assistant. This then provides the carer with a regular break. The service supports people with dementia and their carers to link with services and activities in the community which can be difficult due to the challenges of their illness or caring role. Dementia Supper Clubs. Recently featured on BBC Insideout South East @ the Ostrich Pub, Robertsbridge. The service also offers an opportunity for people with dementia and their carers to get together informally, share experiences and increase their support network through monthly supper clubs held in cafes and pubs. The Association of Carers free respite and befriending service gives unpaid carers the opportunity to take a weekly three hour break from their caring role, while a carefully selected and thoroughly vetted volunteer spends time with the person they look after. Barbara has been caring for her husband Cliff since he had a stroke 27 years ago. Sadly the stroke left Cliff unable to speak but he is able to walk with the aid of a stick and has a great sense of humour. Volunteer Paul visits the couple each week and goes out with Cliff while Barbara has some time to herself. Paul said: “I love my role as a respite and befriending volunteer. I feel rewarded by seeing how much Barbara appreciates her break and Cliff and I have a great time together, we go to the garden centre for a browse and enjoy a cup of tea.
What is a Will A will is the Expression by a living person of wishes which they intend to take effect immediately after their death. The will does not take effect until the person dies but it can be changed at any time prior to death.
