Garden Services Midsummer Roses at Pashley Come mid-June the roses are glorious at Pashley Manor – the perfect time to celebrate these gorgeous blooms with a Special Rose Week at this quintessentially English garden on the border of Sussex and Kent. Masses of gorgeous pinks can be found spilling out of their box hedged borders in the formal Rose Garden and the pale pink, abundant blooms of Rosa Irene Watts parade either side of the Rose Walk. In the Herbaceous Borders many red hued shrub roses in the beds are complemented by rich red climbing roses on the eighteenth century walls, while in the pool garden the unusual silver sheened petals of Rosa Burgundy charmingly mirror the gleam of the water. Such is the profusion of roses at this time that even the front of the house is covered in the pink tinged, creamy yellow flowers of the climbing Rosa Gloire de Dijon. Pashley’s blend of old fashioned and modern roses are complemented by foxgloves, clematis, London pride, sweet peas and summer flowering shrubs. Over the Special Rose Week there will be the opportunity to take a rose themed walk round the gardens with the Head Gardener and there is a great selection of potted roses, from 23 times Chelsea Gold Medal winners Peter Beales Roses, available to buy, as well as rose themed gifts from the Shop – even the menu in the café features rose inspired dishes over this week! Special Rose Week: Friday 9 June every day up to and including Saturday 17 June, 10am - 5pm.

GARDENING IS IN THE AIR
ardens will be blossoming with colour as we drift through June, hopefully with more warm sunshine and just enough rain to keep those plants watered. All that sun and rain will quickly bring on strong prickly weeds and bramble growth. Bradleys the Tannery make a great range of gloves for men and women, including these leather anti-bramble gauntlets, strong and sturdy to protect your hands and forearms from all those prickles – great for pruning roses too! For all other gardening jobs, their lighter weight suede gauntlet gloves in different sizes and colours are ideal. Involve younger members of the family in making paper pots out of old newspapers using Creamore Mill’s Paper Pot Press made from sustainable timber before filling with compost and seeds. Identify your plants with extra wide
032_June032.indd 1
seed labels that accommodate larger writing, making them easier to read without having to bend over. Being compostable, they save the job of sifting out otherwise plastic labels from your compost heap! When vegetable and flower seedlings are ready to plant out, they can be left in their paper pots to avoid root disturbance and put straight into the ground. Plant growth is unchecked because the newspaper decomposes as the plant grows. For bigger projects, Creamore Mill’s oak seed tray dibbers with turned pegs spaced 5cm apart can be used not only for drilling holes but also to rake out drills for sowing rows of small seeds making large volume sowing quicker. They will work in both standard seed trays and half-size seed trays. The flat back of the dibber lends itself to tamping down the compost over the sown seeds afterwards.
Creamore Mill’s oiled beech stakes are wound with 10 metres of natural jute twine to mark out straight lines, perfect for planting out seedling rows in the garden or defining beds and edging lawns. It’s also time to tie back rampant climbers; the Mill also produces a turned oak stand featuring a nifty cutter in the bishop’s head to cut jute twine. At the end of a hard day in the garden, kick off your wellies and store them upside down on Creamore Mill’s oak boot stands with turned tapered pegs and beaded caps - they will grace the entrance of your home and naturally weather over time. We booked our table for fathers’ day at Callenders Restaurant in Hailsham today. We were in Hailsham doing the shopping and popped in for some lunch. When we saw the Fathers’ day menu we booked it immediately. Almost everyone loves a roast on a Sunday, and for those who don’t, there’s a whole selection of fabulous specials. I love the fresh salads, served with a portion of saute potatoes and a cool glass of pinot, perfect. If dad fancies something special there’s a great choice of steaks, fresh fish and wild local game, with a pint or two of good beer. Of course the kids love the home-made pure beef burger, topped with bacon and melted cheese and served with Callenders’ fab triple cooked, hand cut chips. And with a good vegetarian and vegan choice and a gluten free selection too, I’d say there’s something for everyone.

These itineraries give you ample opportunity for memories like these, such as sipping cocktails from an ice glass at the Oslo Ice Bar, enjoying a private, out-of-

It’s a spectacular collection of cruises; and if the itineraries are exciting, the value is extraordinary. All prices include a return chauffeur service up to 250 miles from the port, wine with lunch and dinner, on-board gratuities, 24-hour room service and free Wi-Fi throughout the ships. Better still, early bookers don’t just get the best choice of cabins and itineraries - Saga rewards them by giving them up to 35% off the fare. The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare was established in 1975. A cornerstone of the Trust’s founding policy then, as now, was to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. Our Animal Rescue Centre in Hadlow Down, nr Uckfield in East Sussex, provides a base for the animal rescue and rehoming work. Over the years, the Rescue Centre has also become a permanent home to many animals that it is not possible or desirable to re-home. Funds are raised with the generous support of individual donations, legacies, local fund raising, animal sponsors and our charity shops in Uckfield, Hailsham and Heathfield. We receive no Local Authority, Government or Lottery funding.
Travel authors Robin Mead and his partner Val Field adopted a dog through Give a Dog a Home a year ago. Here, Robin tells their story:
H
ow can we ever repay Give a Dog a Home? The organisation has been instrumental in giving us more happiness than we could ever imagine. And the source of that happiness is: Evie. She’s a dog, of course. To be precise, she is a German Shepherd/collie cross who, until early last year, was a stray running wild on the streets of Livadia, in central Greece. They don’t like stray dogs in Greece. They poison them, or hit them on the head with a hammer to kill them. Somehow, Evie escaped this grisly fate and fell into the hands of a Greek rescue organisation called Elpida. Then Give a Dog a Home brought her here. In fact, they brought her to the house next door to ours, to be fostered. And we fell in love over the garden fence last summer. Simple as that! Val and I had just spent 12 years working as lecturers on cruise ships, and had seen most of the world en route. But you’d be surprised how often we sat on some tropical beach and yearned for the wonderful German Shepherds I had once owned, and even bred. And then Evie appeared next door. She might not be a pure-bred German Shepherd, but she looks awfully like one – and we exchanged daily greetings over the garden fence. Within three months she had moved to our side of the fence, as we completed the adoption process. And within about three minutes, she was part of the family. We think reward-based dog training classes are extremely important,

Give a Dog a Holiday
Ted at Wagging Tails is always on the lookout for lovely people who want to have a dog just for a holiday. If you pass his ‘sniffing out’ test then he will find you well-behaved dogs that you can walk and cuddle as if they were your own while their owners are away. He insists that you must really love dogs and be at home during the day but in return you will get plenty of exercise and good company. Ted started his life in a kennels which he did not enjoy at all as it was too noisy and scary so he believes that all dogs should have the opportunity to stay with a loving carer if their owner goes away. Can you offer your home to a holidaying dog? To find out about becoming a Wagging Tails carer contact Ted via his human secretary, Lesley Birch, on 01424 814695 or go to www. waggingtailsuk.co.uk/tn
but ours seemed to multiply apace. We took Evie on a self-catering holiday to Cornwall, where a local trainer offered one-to-one hourlong training classes, and that started everything off. Evie just loved it, and was extremely quick to learn, so as soon as we got home we enrolled her in a Kennel Club Bronze medal class. She completed that successfully before Christmas, and got her Silver in the spring. She’ll do Gold this autumn, and the delay is because she is so busy! What with weekly activity classes (jumping over hurdles etc), socialisation classes (she’s palled up with an energetic Springer spaniel and a tiny Chihuahua – as strange a trio as you’ll ever meet!), plenty of woodland walks, and trips to her beloved beach, she hardly has a moment to call her own. She has made fantastic progress in obedience terms, and we reckoned she had finally adopted us when she began vigorously defending the house. But she is a gentle soul at heart: wonderful with the grandchildren, and even accepting of the two rescue kittens that we added to the household in the spring. So thank you, Give a Dog a Home, and thank you Evie, for bringing so much happiness into our lives. (See following page)

Birds of a feather.. * Balance of nature* A sentence
we hear time and again. After over sixty years of loving nature and particularly birds I still have no idea what it actually means. Does it mean that some sixty five million years ago when an asteroid crashed into the earth wiping out three quarters of animal life including all the dinosaurs (which were the dominant species at the time) thus allowing mammals to take over the planet * A Balance of nature* possibly yes. Does it mean because of that our ancestors, which evolved about 40,000 years ago, would eventually become the rulers of the world? *A Balance of nature* possibly yes. Does it mean as the most dominant species humans will eventually wipe out most other forms of animals for
their own benefit? *A Balance of nature* possibly yes. So, the balance of nature is a theory that proposes that ecological systems are usually in a stable equilibrium, which is to say that a small change in some particular parameter (the size of a particular population, for example) will be corrected by some negative feedback that will bring the parameter back ( I looked that bit up) ... Well, I don’t think so, unless “ negative feedback” gets on it’s bike and brings the parameters back this planet will surely find itself up the creek without a paddle. Sometimes, not very often - I am just grumpy. .......... Feathers Wild Bird Care www.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk www.feathersoptics.co.uk
