Pelham’s fine furniture & ceramics - A marriage of old and new
Liz Emtage has been designing and creating translucent porcelain lighting, tiles and gift items for more than 20 years. Liz is inspired by the beauty of the natural world - she presses different flowers and textures into the porcelain clay, which leave a delicate impression on the surface of the lamp. When lit these lamps emit an etherial glow, converting the surface decoration into textures of light. Geoff Osler has been restoring and gilding furniture for over 25 years and is inspired by the beauty and the history of the pieces he works on. He specialises in early walnut furniture. Geoff and Liz decided to open ‘Pelham’s fine furniture and ceramics’ in 2016 to show how well the old and the new can be married. Mothers Day, Sunday 26th March - Commission a lamp, tealight or vase inlaid with your mother’s favourite flowers, so she can feel special and know how much you appreciate her every time she looks at it.

Dare you do the Fire & Ice Walk?
What will you buy from St Wilfrid’s Hospice crowdfunding store?
If you’ve previously taken part in a St Wilfrid’s Hospice fire walk before you’ll remember the feeling of elation once you’ve completed the walk. This year we’ve ramped up the challenge, so you can choose to walk over burning embers or sterile broken glass – or both! There’s no doubt that either would be great fun and a great way of raising money for a very good cause. St Wilfrid’s Hospice looks after over 1,000 local people and their families every year. It supports people with any progressive, lifelimiting illness through its Inpatient Unit, via Hospice at Home nurses, the Wellbeing Centre and the 24/7 Nurse Line phone service. It costs £11,800 a day to provide this support and with only 25% coming from the NHS, the hospice relies on the community to provide the rest. One way to help is to join the hospice’s events and get as much sponsorship as you can. The walks take place at the hospice in Eastbourne on Wednesday 15th March from 5.30pm; Registration costs from £25 and closes on 9th March, so be quick! Just go to www.stwhospice .org or call 01323 434241.
Want to donate money to St Wilfrid’s Hospice in return for some marvellous treats? How about VIP festival tickets, signed Chelsea merch, weekends away, meet and greets and some other amazing money-can’t-usually- buy experiences? That’s just an idea of what you can buy at the St Wilfrid’s Hos-Kiss e-Store, which opens for a month on the 1st March. Go online, select the reward and donate your money, which all goes straight to St Wilfrid’s. It’s a great way of buying something special for a friend, family member – or for yourself! Do tell your friends and keep checking back as the treats will be added to as the month progresses. St Wilfrid’s needs your money to continue its work in supporting the 1,000+ local people with life-limiting illness and their families who it helps to take care of every year. The services provided cost over £11,800 a day to run and with only 25% of that coming from the NHS, the hospice needs your help, so go to www.stwhopice.org and please get involved!

Ronan & Storm Keating Ronan and his wife Storm announced they were expecting their first child together in December. Ronan has said he is ‘bursting’ with excitement about becoming a father for the fourth time. The former Boyzone singer, 39, is already father to Jack, 17, Missy, 15, and Ali, 11, from his previous marriage and has spoken about his desire to expand his family. Ronan and the rest of Boyzone will mark 25 years of the band in 2017, but without bandmate Stephen Gately, who sadly died in 2009.
R
onan met his now wife Storm Uechtritz in August 2010 and married her on 17 August 2015. On 6 December 2016 the couple announced they are expecting their first baby together, his fourth and her first. Storm is an Australian-born fashion designer, brand ambassador, producer-director and blogger, now based in London. She has worked on a number of Australian and British television programmes such as The Apprentice Australia, Masterchef Australia, The X Factor, The Voice Australia, and The Voice UK. Storm grew up in a small village in Papua New Guinea, before her family relocated to a cattle property in Australia in 1988. She has

three brothers. During her time at the University of California Los Angeles, Storm completed an internship at HBO in the Original Programming Department under Chris Albrecht. It was upon her return to Australia that she began her career in television production at Channel Nine in Sydney. In 2009, she worked on the production of the Australian version of NBC’s The Apprentice. From 2010-2012, she went on to work with popular formats including The X Factor, Masterchef and The Voice and in 2012, relocated to London where she became the producer-director of The Voice UK.

What’s On Magazine met up with Ronan and Storm at the Telegraph Travel Show to talk about where and how they travel... Firstly, Storm, we just wanted to ask how your name came about? When I was born, my parents were big fans of the author Wilbur Smith and in one of his very first trilogies, one the main protagonists conceives her baby daughter in a thunderstorm and calls her Storm. My parents liked the name and went with it. Ronan adds (laughing) ‘My father was reading the Racing Post and saw a horse running called Ronan.’ How much of your time is spent travelling? (Ronan) We travel between eight and nine months of the year. We just came off a five and a half month tour which we started in August. If you are lucky to be in a city for two or three days, that’s great but normally it’s a day or so in each town. You land, go to the hotel, freshen up, go to the venue, sound check, back to the hotel. I might get a gym session in if I am lucky and then back for the gig. It gets to be routine after a while. We started our 2016 tour in Scandinavia and then we went to South Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and then back to Europe. It is difficult but if you don’t get out and tour, your career can go stale.
(Ronan) Yes, it used to be autographs in the old days but now of course it’s selfies. I never forget the first time that someone asked for a photograph on a cellphone, I was in Dublin and a chap and his lady came up to me and asked for a photograph. I said of course and she took out her flip phone and I couldn’t understand what she was doing. When I used to sing ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ the audience would always hold up their cigarette lighters and wave them, now it’s all mobile phones. Of course that’s progress, but it is tough when you are sitting at your dinner table or if you are on the beach and someone comes up with a phone. How do you handle that? I think I am lucky to still be asked, it’s when they stop asking that you have to worry. When you actually get time off for a proper holiday, how do you plan it? (Ronan) Research is everything and the internet is an incredible tool to find anything that you want about your destination. You have got to spend time looking these things up because there is nothing worse than leaving a place and someone saying to you ‘did you go to ....... or did you try .......’ so you want to try and maximise your time there.
city that we go to. There is nothing like hearing first hand from someone who has actually been there. (Ronan) We noticed that some of the hotels don’t always publish the best photos they could on their own websites, we often look at other peoples photographs and comments which are sometimes better. We have just returned from Oman and the photographs of the hotel we saw before we travelled really didn’t do it justice. Storm brought me a drone for Christmas so I spent quite a bit of time filming and the amount of people who said ‘that looks really amazing’ showed me that the hotel should really be doing more with what they’ve got. I understand you have a ‘sponsorship deal’ with Etihad Airways when you touring? (Ronan) Yes, when you are travelling as much as we do, it gets very expensive. There are 35 people travelling with us on the tour and when you are travelling from London to Sydney, it’s 23hrs and you have to arrive fresh for a show. You can’t travel in Economy, I couldn’t do that to the band. So when you get a ‘tie up’ with Etihad Airways or Virgin Australia it just makes it a little bit more comfortable and easier. Are you able to travel quite light in terms of numbers of bags? (Ronan) I will never forget way back, the boys and I landed in Paris and we got off the plane and we bumped into the band ‘Boys to Men’, there was only four of them and they had forty five suitcases, the airline confused them with us and said ‘we have your forty five cases here but we were only travelling with a small case each. We always travelled super light and I try to continue that today. It is morw difficult because now because I like my creature comforts. (Storm) I am a good packer, so I can get more into the same size case but yes I travel light as well. We have had a lot of practice so we are pretty good at it now. Coming back from Australia is always a problem because that’s my home and I tend to accumulate stuff which I then bring back. Before you know it I have got several cases to come back with me.
“We went to Kruger National Park on our honeymoon and I have to say it is probably one of the greatest trips of my life”
So I guess you don’t get much chance to actually see the places you are visiting? (Storm) We will often do a bit of research before we get to a destination and literally fill 24hrs up trying to see the main sights, visiting the best restaurants, cocktail bars and museums. It leaves us feeling a little bit more cultured. (Ronan) It’s been an eye opener actually, because I spent years travelling before I met Storm, and all I saw was a hotel room and an aeroplane or a venue and a tv studio and then headed to the next one. I missed some really remarkable places which is very sad, so I am now actually trying to get to see these cities and some of the sights. Do you get a lot of people coming up to you for ‘selfies’ when you are travelling?
Ronan Keating Pages.indd 5
Because we are used to planning 24 hours in a particular place, when we have the luxury of seven days it makes it easier for us to plan out what we want to do. (Storm) I think social media is also very useful. When you are scrolling through an Instagram page and you see a beautiful beach, you can just click on the location and see where it is. It is much easier to get inspiration from friends and family than it used to be. We always go to Trip Advisor and other media recommendations especially when looking at restaurants in every
Is there anything specific that you look for in a hotel? (Ronan) The most important thing is the
18/02/2017 16:13:26
actual living space in the room. Some hotels just think about how many people they can pack in rather than the actual experience of their guest. The bed and pillows have to be super comfortable. It’s good to see that even hotels like Premier Inn are concentrating on the actual comfort aspect of their beds. How the space is configured is also very important and of course plenty of light. Do you have any favourite hotels you enjoy going back to? (Ronan) The Park Hyatt in Sydney is just one of the most incredible hotels in the world. Every single room looks out onto the Opera House. It is expensive so we don’t stay there all the time but it’s nice to when you can. We have also stayed in a couple of the ‘Six Senses Hotels’ which are also incredible.
What about some other favourite destinations? (Ronan) We got engaged at the Six Senses Hotel in Yao Noi Thailand which was remarkable and I also really liked the hotel we have just come back from which was the Six Senses’ Hideaway in Zighy Bay, Oman, just amazing. There is also a place in Australia on Lizard Island which was extremely remote but the hotel gives you your own motor boat so you can go off and just find your own beach. They give you a little picnic to take along and for me it was one of the most remarkable experiences. (Storm) That was just past Cook Town right up in the North by the Great Barrier Reef. It is not the type of place that you would take the family because there is not a lot to do. We have so many destination favourites depending on
what the occasion is. We love to take the kids skiing in Verbier which is one of our favourite family holidays. With the new baby on the way are your lives going to change in terms of travelling? (Storm) In the beginning of course it will make a difference but anyone who knows us, knows that we will keep doing what we are doing. We will take it easy for the first few months. Our kids love to travel and love to experience the different cultures we meet. What are your top 3 destinations? (Ronan) Australia has to be the top. It’s a remarkable country. Everything is beautiful and it’s so diverse. It is a shame it is so far away from Europe otherwise I would be there all the time. After that, I would say Africa. On our honeymoon we went to Kruger National Park and I have to say it is probably one of the greatest trips of my life. I had never been on a proper safari before. If you get the chance to do it once in your life you definitely should and we both want to go back at some point. Of course I have to say Ireland and more specifically the West Coast of Ireland is just incredible. What’s next on your destinations list? (Ronan) Somewhere we wanted to see before it changed too much is Cuba. Everyone keeps saying it’s going to change dramatically now the political things have changed. I have heard it’s gorgeous and unique so that is definitely one for the list. Also Mexico and actually we are taking the kids to Greece this summer. (Storm) We have talked about going to Cambodia which may also be on the list for this year.

Ronan, can you tell us about your charity work? I lost my mum to cancer back in 1998 and from there I spent a lot of time putting my energy into trying to understand why we went through what we went through and so we set up the Ronan Keating Foundation in the hope that we could help somebody else, so that they wouldn’t be in the position that we were. She was only 51 and died from the most curable type of cancer (Breast Cancer) so it shouldn’t have happened. So now, when I am walking across Ireland from the top to the bottom or swimming across the Irish sea or climbing Kilimanjaro, it’s a constant
18/02/2017 16:13:49
process of coming up with ideas to raise money. We have our annual fund raising dinner in London each year and over the last eleven years we have raised over 8 million pounds. I do believe people in my shoes have almost an obligation to speak up and to use their voice to help people that don’t have a voice. You have just finished your tenth studio album, what else have you got coming up this year? Yes I have got a couple of films I’m shooting and there is a T.V. drama that I am doing. Last year was all about the tour but this year is more about filming. I have a film coming out in March which is World War II Drama and then I am shooting another film in April.
Thank You Ronan

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017 23 – 27 May 2017
v Showcasing innovative, sustainable ways to green up small urban spaces in a changing world. v Re-creating UK scenes such as Yorkshire’s coastline, the Norfolk broads, and Berkshire’s endangered heathland. v Naturalistic re-imaginings of the lakes and forests of Canada, the landscapes of Malta, the Caribbean, Spain, China, Japan v In the Great Pavilion plants that thrive in the shade, and plants pollinated by moths, flies and beetles. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has revealed details of 24 confirmed Gardens, including nine Show Gardens, nine Artisan Gardens, five Fresh Gardens, the RHS Greening Grey Britain Garden, and more than 100 floral displays, which will make up the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show (23 – 27 May 2017), sponsored by M&G Investments. Nick Mattingley, RHS Director of Shows, says: “As with every RHS Chelsea Flower Show for more than a century, designers, nurserymen and leading lights of the horticultural world are pulling out all the stops to make this the best gardening event in the world. “With world-class designers like Chris Beardshaw, James Basson, Nigel Dunnett, Kate Gould and Sarah Eberle, many new trailblazers in horticulture, and outstanding specialist nurseries such as Hilliers, Burncoose, Dibleys and Kelways, we’re looking forward to a fabulous show. “As well as having some very exciting Fresh Gardens at the show,” said Nick, “we also have a record number of Artisan Gardens this year which are bigger than ever before.”
Highlights of the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show include: Professor Nigel Dunnett, who created the wildflower meadow for the London Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in 2012, is the designer of the 2017 RHS Greening Grey Britain Garden. Set within an urban context of highrise and apartment developments, Nigel will demonstrate and celebrate the multiple benefits of plants and gardens in even the smallest of areas, and provide a vision for the future development and use of private, communal and social spaces in the places where we live. Artisan Garden highlights include the 2016 winner of Best Fresh Garden, Gary Breeze, whose garden features the replica of an 800-year-old boat that was discovered in the Norfolk Broads. Ishihara Kazuyuki returns for his 12th year with Gosho No Niwa inspired by the Kyoto emperors of Japan. The unique work of inspirational Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí is the focus of Sarah Eberle’s Viking Cruises Garden of Inspiration. Fresh Gardens include Jack Dunckley’s The Bermuda Triangle which will resemble an active volcano surrounded by tropical planting. At 23, Jack is one of the youngest garden designers ever to exhibit at an RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Kate Gould’s City Living demonstrates how to create a usable green space in an urban apartment block, and Mind Trap by Ian Price is about his personal experience of depression. In the Show Garden category, James Basson will be going for his third consecutive RHS Gold medal with a re-creation of the stunning Maltese landscape for M&G. Laurie Chetwood and Patrick Collins are teaming up for the third time at RHS Chelsea with The Chengdu Silk
Road Garden which combines architecture and planting in a conceptual East-West landscape with a dramatic ‘Silk Road’ bridge linking the different elements of the garden. Lee Bestall is celebrating 500 Years of Covent Garden, while Andrew Wilson and Gavin McWilliam aim to highlight endangered heathland for Wellington College. Chris Beardshaw is going for his 12th RHS Gold medal and is working with the National Youth Orchestra, which will compose a piece of music inspired by the garden. In the Great Pavilion, the jewel in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show crown, Hillier is aiming for its 72nd consecutive Gold medal with Hillier’s Spring which features a 4.3m high metallic spring. Burncoose is focusing on plants for unexpected pollinators such as flies, moths and beetles. Birmingham City Council celebrates the weird and whimsical world of quirky inventor Rowland Ernett and, new to RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Hare Spring Cottage Plants, which holds the largest collection of genus Camassia after amalgamating its with that of the late, great plantswoman Margaret Owen, the previous holder of the biggest collection. Also in the Great Pavilion, the Discovery Zone features the Come to Your Senses Eco Garden by Scotts Miracle-Gro, aiming to tackle the overstimulated and sedentary lives of children in the UK with a design that encourages children to enter the haven of a garden. The British Ecological Society’s Delight in the Dark will showcase the diversity of shade-tolerant plants. Tickets to RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017 are still available to buy at www.rhs.org.uk/flowershows
