ow in its second year, the 1066 Cycling Festival is a FREE two day festival celebrating everything cycling. The festival will run over the weekend of 17 and 18 June at two venues in Hastings and Bexhill. Organised by Hastings Borough Council in partnership with East Sussex County Council’s Active Hastings team and Active Rother at Rother District Council, the event will showcase some fantastic cycling events, demonstrations and family fun activities. On both days visitors can see Savage Skills Stunt team, LaDinamo Funky bike band play along Hastings’ seafront, Rollapaluza, have a go balance and adapted bikes provide by ESCC, bike decorating with Treasure Tots, have your bike MOT’d by Handsome Bicycles, try the Freedom Leisure Challenge and take part in the treasure hunt. Pav Bryan Cycle Coaching and Nutritional Fit will also be on hand. On Saturday 17 June, the festival runs from 11am to 3pm at the Stade Open Space, Hastings. At The Source Park there will be 15 minute demos at 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm and adapted and balance bikes will be in The Multi Use Games Area (near crazy golf ). Bike Bomb races will take place from 7pm in Bottle Alley (next to the Pier) and for keen cyclists, Handsome Bicycles have organised Hastings first Sportive – Historic Half Hundred; a 50 mile ride taking in the best of views of 1066 country. There will also be learn to ride taster sessions provided by CycleSafe, plus local rides. Firle Place Antiques Fair Returns for Spring 2017 Following it’s launch success in 2016, Firle Place hosts its second annual Antiques Fair, 2nd - 4th June. With hundreds of visitors from across the south of England and plenty of art and antiques expected to be changing hands during its three days, organiser Caroline Penman from Uckfield is full of anticipation for this year’s return event. We’ve come forward in the calendar to early June,’ says Caroline, ‘‘to slot comfortably beween the Garden Fair and the Vintage Fairs in Firle Park, and once again our specialist dealers will be presenting a superb display of art, antiques and collectors’ pieces with prices to suit every pocket.’ The fair takes place in the historic setting of the 18th century Riding School with exhibitors showing their stock in room-set displays. The idea of a new professional orchestra in Hastings might seem insane in this time of austerity but that would be to ignore the enthusiasm and expertise which Marcio da Silva has brought to the South-East over the last few years. Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra is the first professional orchestra resident in Hastings for over half a century and his belief in the viability of the project has already proved itself in a range of fine performances. Having opened the season last November with Beethoven’s Choral Symphony at the White Rock, on 20th May they return to St Mary-in-the-Castle to perform his Choral Fantasy, and Egmont Overture. The major work in the programme will, however, be Brahms’ Second Symphony, a sublime and substantial romantic work which will draw on all the resources of the orchestra. Marcio said, ‘I’m pleased that we have been offered a residency at St Mary-in-the-Castle which will give us a permanent base and we can look to ensuring the right conditions are regularly available so that we don’t have to move staging everytime we hold an event. Some events will be streamed to attract a wider audience, and there will be a new inter-active web-site to keep supporters in regular touch with us and plans as they evolve.’

52nd Annual Traction Engine Rally Sat 3rd and Sun 4th June 2017 Since the late 1800’s Claude Jessett’s family lived in Hadlow Down and after Claude married Joyce nearly sixty years ago they spent all their married life in the family home at Tinkers Park. Claude had an interest in all things mechanical and acquired his first traction engine during the Second World War. The engine remains part of the collection, and played no small part in inspiring Claude and Joyce to hold their first steam rally in 1966. Since then there has been an unbroken line in annual Steam Rallies, each one providing a chance to see a fascinating range of exhibits, from the smallest stationary engine driving a water pump, to a huge traction engine designed for ploughing fields. With steam rollers, tractors, cars and motorbikes being just some of the exhibits on show this year’s rally promises to be a wonderful occasion for adults and children alike. The famous Jessett collection of mechanical musical instruments will be in operation, as will the “Great Bush Railway”. Pause to watch the steam engine events while enjoying some hot or cold food along with a pint of Harveys from the beer tent. The Harris family’s traditional fairground has been involved since the first rally and their rides are sure to be a hit with everyone. Then it’s on to the stalls, with all manner of items for sale, from autojumble and tools to books and plants. John Craven John Craven was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire and started his journalistic career as a junior reporter on the Harrogate Advertiser. Still investigating controversial issues affecting our countryside after 40 years in television, John has been awarded an OBE for services to rural and children’s broadcasting.
J
ohn first hit our TV screens in his psychedelic shirts and jumpers presenting a children’s talk show called Search, in which enthusiastic youngsters aired their views. Then, in 1972, he made television history presenting the first BBC news programme specially made for children – John Craven’s Newsround. John helped to shape the show. Wearing informal clothes and sitting in front of his desk, he explained the news clearly and simply enough for a 9-year-old to understand. John’s easy, straight-talking style led to him becoming part of the team presenting Multi-Coloured Swap Shop

in the mid-1970s, along with Noel Edmonds, Keith Chegwin and Maggie Philbin; and later, to Saturday Superstore with Mike Read. In 1989, just days after announcing his departure from Newsround, John made the move away from children’s TV and began to present Countryfile, tackling rural and farming stories from Foot and Mouth disease to the ban on foxhunting. What’s On Magazine met up with John to hear about his long and perhaps lesser known association with Panda’s.
John, can you tell us about how your love of Panda’s came about? I have been going to China and looking at Panda’s for some time now. It all started in my Newsround days. The programme started back in 1972 and because it was aimed at children we had to be very careful with the type of content we presented to them. Wildlife and Conservation were high on the list and for me, Panda’s are a symbol of conservation. We did many stories on Newsround about Panda’s and we even did an April Fools story on them. We made a huge white egg with black spots on it and put it in a Panda cage pretending it was going to take a year to hatch.

Of course the Panda became the symbol of the world Wildlife Fund For Nature and at the inaugural meeting when people were getting this organisation together, Sir Peter Scott, the Great Naturalist was on the Board at the meeting. Not being very good at long meetings he was doodling and when it came to the subject of what was going to be the symbol of the WWF the person sitting next to Sir Peter said I think Sir Peter has just created it. In the late 70’s and early 80’s there was a crisis in China because the Arrow Bamboo which was the Pandas main food source had started to flower and after it does this it withers and dies. Around 200 Pandas starved to death and so a big rescue operation has mounted and Newsround was invited by the Chinese Goverment to film the rescue operation and we were the first Western television company to be allowed to film at the Panda reserve. In those days there were about 1300 Pandas in the wild and only a handful in captivity. The wild ones were not only facing threats from starvation but also from poachers and farming practices which gradually have been encroaching their land. The authorities set up 67 protected zones all

around Panda country. What is the current state of Panda conservation? Well, the results of that have been that numbers of wild Panda’s have now increased to around 1800 Pandas in the wild and that is a 17% increase on the last survey. It’s still not enough, but it is sufficient that the conservation for nature has taken the Panda off of their list of endangered species. Pandas are now classed as ‘vulnerable’. Have you returned to China since your early visits? More recently I have been going to China with Wendy Wu Tours to show travellers around the Panda breeding centre. Tourism is absolutely vital because the money that is earned is spent helping to provide some amazingly successful research work that has lead to a boom in captively bred Panda’s. A couple of years ago I had the great honour of being presented with a scroll which made me the UK’s official ambassador for Panda tourism. I think I maybe the world’s only Panda Ambassador.
What have you most enjoyed there? Obviously one of the biggest things that tourists visit in China is the Great Wall. It’s an amazing spectacle which runs for about 6,000 miles. I have been to the very furthest Western end of the Wall and it just comes to a complete stop in an open dessert. Another one for the tick list are the Terracotta Warriors which are a fantastic sight, they were discovered by accident in 1974 by a group of farmers who were digging a well. They came across this great chamber with life sized figures in it. With all the excavation that has now taken place, over 6,000 Warriors have been discovered and the excavations still haven’t finished. All the Warriors were guarding the tomb off of the first Emperor of China who was responsible for the Great Wall. I originally went there in the footsteps of Margaret Thatcher, China was beginning to open up the country in the aftermath of the cultural revolution and Wham had just performed a concert as the first Western pop group to perform in China. At that stage it was just a hole that you could look down and see a handful of Warriors. Now it’s one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world.

Another place a lot of people visit is Chengdu in the Szechuan Province of China. It is a big city with about 15 million people living there. It makes around half the world’s laptop chips and two thirds of all the worlds Ipads. It also has the largest free standing building in the world which includes a half mile long beach complete with artificial waves. Most people however visit the city for a completely different reason. They go there to see the main research centre for giant Panda breeding. The centre was set up to prevent the Panda going the way of the Dodo, and so far they have done a pretty good job of that. There have been lots of babies born at the centre and at other centres around the country. Just in case they ever do die out in the wild there will be more than enough in captivitiy to keep the species going. Ideally some of these babies born at the centre will be able to be released back into the wild when they are older. It has been tried but without much success so there is a lot of research still to be done in this area. What’s The Connection with Wendy Wu Travel? Wendy Wu really is very passionate about making sure that everybody who travels
with her has a fantastic experience, she takes great interest in every aspect of the business and she came with me to have a look at the baby Pandas. Since the Research work started there have been over 300 successful births. In the early days many of them were fathered by Pan Pan who sadly died a few months ago. He was 31 when he died which is very old for a Panda, they don’t live anything like that time in the wild. Visitors to the centre can pay a fee to pick up a Panda and have their photo taken with a young Panda. You can also help as a volunteer cleaning out Panda enclosures. A lot of these hands on experiences had to be curtailed due to an outbreak of Canine Distemper which Pandas are susceptible to, but there is still one Centre you can go to with Wendy Wu Travel where it is still safe to do this. Have you learnt a lot about baby Panda’s? Yes I have seen and learnt an amazing amount. Panda cubs are born pink and are about the size of a mouse. They are a thousand times smaller than their mothers and are covered in short white hair. Their eyes are tighly shut and they cry very loudly. Their black patches start to appear around one years old followed
by black hair a few weeks later. The eyes fully open after about 60 days. After about 80 days they can stand and in four months they run about and climb on their mums back to play. After nine months they follow their mother and can climb trees. When a mother has twins in the wild she will let the second one die because she just cannot cope with handling two babies which is why Panda numbers are so small. That doesn’t happen in captivity, after the twins are born the mother is distracted and the breeding team pop in, take one of the babies out and put it into an incubator. It stays there for a couple of weeks and then the team distract the mother again, rub the baby in the smells of its mother and put it back into the cage, removing the other one to go into the incubator. This goes on for three or four months and it means the centre gets two Panda’s and the mother never realises. Once they don’t need her milk she is quite happy for both of them to be around. Of course their main diet is bamboo but once in captivity they also love to eat carrots. Bamboo has hardly any nourishment so Panda’s have to spend 14 hours a day eating around 14 kilograms of

bamboo just to give them enough energy to keep going. For the rest of the time, they just sleep. What other threats do the Panda’s face? Although its numbers are slightly up at the moment, scientists are now worried about global warming and the impact that might have on the bamboo forests on the high mountains. They think it could lead to up to 30% of the bamboo being killed off. There are also outspoken critics of the Panda Breeding programme, people who think that the money would be better spent on wider conservation projects and on protecting species which have a better chance of eventual survival. When I take visitors to see the Pandas and they get their first sight of them, they say its a moment they will never forget. What would future generations think of this generation if we allow this animal to become extinct. I don’t think we can

let that happen and tourism is a very important way of helping to prevent it.

Battle Medieval Fayre

attle Medieval Fayre is a two-day family event held on 28 May - 29 May 2017 and is based upon the old idea of a Fayre – somewhere to meet your friends, entertain your family, amuse your children, eat, drink and buy good things! The Fayre offers stalls, games and entertainment throughout both days. The entertainment is a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery. There will be talks by Hands on History and an opportunity to see and try on mediaeval amour and weaponry. Battle’s very own Knights of the Realm will be strutting their stuff with boo-ing and cheering to encourage them in their chivalrous endeavours. In addition 1066 Falconry will be there and 1066 Lacemakers will be demonstrating the delicate art of lacemaking. There will be potters offering an opportunity for young ones to try throwing a pot, and games and facepainting for the young. Entry is Free. Battle Medieval Fayre MEDIEVAL WOOLLY CONNECTIONS
Primitive man clothed himself in woolly sheepskins from sheep killed for food, giving him protection from the elements. Later, sheep were milked and by 1900 BC, wool was spun and woven in Britain. By the start of the Medieval Period, having been encouraged to grow their developing woollen industry by the Romans following their invasion in 55 BC, Britons were spinning fleeces and weaving fine cloth. The Saxon invasions in the 5th century nearly destroyed the industry, but by the 8th Britons were exporting to the Continent. Post Norman Conquest the industry expanded further, so by the 12th century clothmaking was extensive in southern and eastern England. Production peaked in the 13th century then declined due to political strife. Flemish Weavers settled here in the 14th during the Spanish invasion bringing prosperity to the wool trade. Black Death decimated the population so arable farming became difficult and less labour intensive sheep farming increased. Raw wool exports grew as did the manufacture of wool fabrics so England became a major exporter of woollen cloth towards the end of the Medieval Period. We booked our table for fathers’ day at Callenders Restaurant in Hailsham today. We were in Hailsham doing the shopping and popped in for some lunch. When we saw the Fathers’ day menu we booked it immediately. Almost everyone loves a roast on a Sunday, and for those who don’t, there’s a whole selection of fabulous specials. I love the fresh salads, served with a portion of saute potatoes and a cool glass of pinot, perfect. If dad fancies something special there’s a great choice of steaks, fresh fish and wild local game, with a pint or two of good beer. Of course the kids love the home-made pure beef burger, topped with bacon and melted cheese and served with Callenders’ fab triple cooked, hand cut chips. And with a good vegetarian and vegan choice and a gluten free selection too, I’d say there’s something for everyone.

Garden Services Sculpture inspiration for the garden and home at Pashley Pashley Manor is proud to host an exhibition and sale of almost 200 pieces of sculpture at their award winning gardens in Sussex at the Sculpture in Particular event from late May to early June. National Initiative Launched for a Community to win RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden For the first time a national initiative has been launched on BBC One’s The One Show, where gardening communities anywhere in the UK could be in with a chance to win an RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden. The scheme will see the plants and other elements of the RHS Greening Grey Britain Garden, designed by Nigel Dunnett, live on in a public space to be loved and enjoyed by a local community. The initiative is part of the RHS’ Greening Grey Britain Campaign to turn grey, unloved spaces into green, planted up places, for the nation’s health, happiness and for the environment and wildlife. The RHS is calling on community groups across the UK to enter for the chance to transform a plot of up to 250 square metres that can be accessed by the public. Schools, hospitals, hospices, gardening groups, allotments, medical centres and resident groups can all apply. The judges, award-winning designer Nigel
Dunnett, One Show Presenter Christine Walkden and RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter, will be looking for imagination and zest for making a difference by planting up a garden, with plenty of benefit for residents, the general environment and local wildlife.

Chris Beardshaw Returns to his Nurseryman Roots for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017 For this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Chris Beardshaw has returned to his roots as a nurseryman, and is taking the unusual step of personally growing and nurturing over 2000 herbaceous plants, which will play a starring role in The Morgan Stanley Garden. Chris began his horticultural career at 11 years old, working at weekends at a nursery in Worcestershire where he learnt to propagate plants and inspire customers. It was here that his real passion for plants began. And now after 35 years in the horticultural, and garden design industry, Chris is enjoying being back in the glasshouse and getting upclose and personal with the many thousands of stunning plants, he will soon be planting in the Morgan Stanley Garden on Main Avenue. Chris, who created his first RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden in 1998 and has gone on to win 11 RHS Gold Medals, said, “There is something magical about being able to handle, nurture and encourage our plants in a refined environment with a very specific goal – that of bringing the plants to as close
to perfection as possible in time for the show. In doing so I am getting to know the plant material intimately, not just the difference between the species, but every plant in every pot becomes familiar and as a consequence I can already build up a picture of how the plant will play a role in the finished garden.”
and the structures of nature. The path leads out to a third zone which contrasts the woodland with a sun soaked terrace at the front of the garden. The area is richly planted with abundant jewel like perennials, such as Iris, Geraniums, Echiums, Agapanthus and specimen herbs.
The Morgan Stanley Garden features two distinct planting areas and unusually for Chelsea, the public will be able to view the garden from three sides, with each perspective providing a contrasting planting style. A sinuous path leads from a naturalistic woodland which features a collection of specimen trees which are underplanted with an array of woodland perennial species such as Hostas’, Geranium, Brunnera and Ferns, to provide a verdant tapestry of foliage textures.
Chris concluded, “Like most designers for shows we usually prepare our designs and select our plants from commercial nurseries, who then grow them on for us. We will visit them regularly to check on progress but the next time we see them is when they are delivered to Chelsea. It’s then straight off the trollies and onto the show garden for planting. But this year we decided to do things differently. Looking after the plants is obviously very time consuming when we are so busy with everything else. And is quite challenging as we have to work with the changing weather conditions - holding back some species, while coaxing on others. But for me the planting is the aspect of any show garden creation I love the most and this year will be even more special and rewarding.”

eflexology is a natural holistic therapy. It is based on the principals that your feet and also your hands are complete maps of your entire body.
