Blount Aerials
have been established since 1971 and have been trading in Eastbourne and the surrounding area ever since. We are a small family run business that cover not only domestic properties but communal systems too. We recognise that no two scenarios are the same and aim to provide the highest level of service to all of our customers. Whether you’re looking for a repair or a complete new installation our experienced engineers will listen to your needs and fully explain the options available to you. We are members of the Confederation of Aerial Industries and have been since 1978 with our membership number of 003! Prior to the digital switchover we gained our CAI plus membership, this was created to set a higher standard; reinforcing the professionalism of our engineers with added checks and more stringent standards. This status means that all of our engineers are CRB checked and fully insured, together with the added peace of mind that we comply to all of the industry recognised standards. All of the installations we complete are covered by a 12 month guarantee, alongside this the CAI are able to provide a double guarantee for single household installations for its members clients. We feel this gives our customers the peace of mind they need together with the knowledge that the workmanship carried out will be of the highest standard possible. Although we have moved premises in the last year, the engineers that visit you in your home are the same, with the Head Engineer, Ian Whitehorn now being a Director of the company. Before this Ian had been working for Blount Aerials for 10 years proving himself to be an exemplary worker. Our core values will never change and we will always aim to provide our customers, past, present and future with the best possible service no matter how big or small their requirements.

THE CASE FOR ROOF MOUNTED SOLAR PANELS The South Coast from Dover to Chichester attracts more sunshine than anywhere else in the UK. Here you will also find thousands of acres of exposed south facing roofs and yet just a tiny fraction have any solar panels, either PV or solar thermal. Why is that? We know many home owners experience energy bill and carbon emission concerns. Most are also aware of the technologies available and yet we have made little progress in comparison to other European countries, even with generous government subsidies. Many argue that the visual impact of panels on the roof is a contributory factor. It is then a philosophical conundrum and possibly one of conditioning and perception; we are used to seeing terracotta or slate
tiles. If we really are committed to renewable solar technologies, and most surveys tell us we are, then the alternative is to cover more of our countryside in panels and wind turbines! The Government have recently supported roof mounted systems as preferable to ground mounted PV farms occupying our countryside. SolarUK supports that position. SolarUK is a Kent and Sussex based solar company, one of the very few that actually manufactures a fully accredited and very efficient (93%) solar thermal panel right here in the heart of Sussex. We design and install PV, Solar Thermal and Heat Pump systems across the UK. Established in 2000, we provide a bespoke service that extends beyond installation to yearly servicing and maintenance.

Retirement properties: A wiser and older investment Does the thought of a purpose built retirement block of apartments fill you with dread? Does it symbolise an acceptance of your own demise from the minute that you move in? Possibly, however is this really the case? Rather than looking at them negatively let’s look at them for what they really are, good clean apartments with modern facilities, offering peace of mind in terms of security, a sense of community and no risk of screaming babies or rowdy teenagers for neighbours. The communal areas tend to be kept in very good condition and there are often areas to sit, relax, have a cup of coffee and socialise while still maintaining total independence. The only warning I would give would be that of high service charges imposed by the block management, a necessary evil of having a well maintained communal space and building security. However if you rent out one of these flats the monthly rental payment is usually inclusive of the service charge, this explains why the asking prices tend to look a little inflated compared to market value. The benefits to prospective tenants are obvious but how about to investors. The fact that you lose a chunk of your monthly rental income to pay for service charge can be a turn off and make it appear like a poor investment, but on the contrary, what you have, in our aging population, is a large and guaranteed source of potential house proud tenants, with 45% of the population in some areas of Bexhill being over the age of 65. Then at a time you deem suitable you have perfect accommodation to move into while having a nest egg from the sale of your previous home to enjoy life and all Bexhill has to offer.

SEPTEMBER in HALO is always exciting as there is just SO much new stock to see! All the brands we stock offer something a little different yet mix and match beautifully together. We are always really pleased to help you create a look all your own – so much nicer than duplicating a look from a High Street chain or catalogue. This needn’t be expensive and people are often surprised to discover we are usually cheaper than buying the same brands on line. We think this season’s colour palette is particularly strong with easy to wear shades of blue, grey and dark green plus of course the ever popular black! Red makes a welcome return, or berry if you prefer something a little more subdued, and pattern continues to be strong be it zigzag, check or winter florals. There are some fabulous dresses in stock for Autumn most notably the gorgeous new collection just in from PAPER DOLLS. They specialise in figure flattering dresses finishing just below the knee meaning they are suitable for a large range of ages and can be worn as smart day wear as well as evening. Goodwood Revival 12 - 14 September 2014 www.goodwood.co.uk/revival At The Goodwood Estate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0PX
T
he Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the world’s most authentic motor circuit. The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. The Revival offers visitors the opportunity to leave the ‘modern world’ behind and join motor sport luminaries in an unabashed celebration of flat-out, wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic racetrack, untouched by the modern world. You might have seen plenty of classic Aston Martins grace the Goodwood Estate in the past, but we have a James Bond first for you this year in the shape of a Bond villain’s aircraft: the helicopter used in Goldfinger, in which the man with the Midas touch travels with his deadly pilot Pussy Galore. The helicopter is sure to be a big hit with fans of the franchise when it appears as part of the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation presented by Eve, which now has all sorts of confirmed aircraft.

I am delighted and proud that the show’s reputation attracts such high calibre artists.” Dani Humberstone SWA, Member of the Society of Women Artists, invited artist and one of the panel of judges says, “The selection process this year was particularly tough, with so many strong candidates. The show will give visitors the opportunity to view and buy some outstanding pieces of artwork, including video installation, drawings, painting, ceramics, photography, etchings and sculpture” Carole Andrews FRBS, Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, headlines the 3D work with her stunning, oversized piece Red Vilosa. The West was Never This Wild! Bowler Crabs’ recent production of Measure For Measure shows Shakespeare’s complex comedy as very much a play for today, a dark comedy about sex and the state with its emphasis on political corruption and the phoney facades of people in high places. Stephen J John directs a clear vision to his updated production, setting Shakespeare’s dark comedy-drama of misunderstandings and hidden identities in the Wild West. Along with the many superb performances, the scenes between Angelo (Alexander Hunt) and Isabella (Imogen Amey-Howarth) are the drama’s highlight and both roles are superbly cast. Henri Hayler gives the Duke Vincentio the uncertain air of a man who has made a transition from leader to observer and has to keep adjusting as the situation changes. Another impressive performance comes from Keiran Kerswell as the reprobate Lucio. Instead of what would be a vicious gossip, Keirans’ smile and playful manner give him a perverse charm. The comic highlight of the play is the delicious scene in which the condemned killer Barnardine, played with blunt hilarity by Kasbian Rogers, shrugs off the timid requests of Pompey (Clare Murray) and the executioner Abhorson (Stuart Miller) that he allow himself to be hanged, with superb indifference to the serious matter at hand. Look out for future productions from Bowler Crab in 2015!

When it came to booking somewhere special for our “big do” we just knew it had to be Callenders on the High Street. They really do know how to look after you. We gave them a call, and told them what we would like, and they wrote a menu just for us. It was fantastic. Callenders can easily cater for groups of up to forty. We love it there. Relaxed and casual dining. We regularly make a Friday evening visit to Callenders to enjoy a steak and a bottle of wine. There’s tender Fillet, Rump or T-Bone to choose from, or sometimes I’ll have a fish or pasta dish. Fantastic. So if you’d like to celebrate a special occasion this year give Callenders a call, or drop in for a coffee and a chat. From a romantic meal for two to a celebration dinner for forty let Callenders look after you.

Michaela joined Chris Packham and Martin Hughes-Games in 2011 to become part of the presenting team of Autumnwatch, Springwatch and Winterwatach for the BBC. She has also filmed 2 series of ‘Great British Ghosts’, for UKTV’s Yesterday channel and ‘The Great Penguin Rescue’ for the NHU S.Africa, showing on the Eden Channel and Viasat. What’s On Magazine met up with Michaela at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent for this exclusive interview and photo shoot. Michaela, I understand you arrived back in the UK last week? Yes, I am over here for a ten day tour presenting my show. Are you travelling with your husband Nick and son Ollie? No, unfortunately because we live in South Africa, we have totally different holidays so we have just had our winter holiday (June and July) and then our summer holiday is Christmas time so it means my son is not on school break. It’s a real shame because he would have had an absolute ball this week. Yesterday I was at a place called ‘Adventure Valley’ in Durham which was like a petting zoo but it had loads of activities for kids which he would have loved. Of course he wouldn’t have liked the driving, I was in the car for 7 hours last night from Durham to Cambridge.
We last interviewed you in 2001 and you were saying that you had always seen yourself eventually living abroad. Three years later in 2004 you moved to South Africa, so how did that come about? How funny is that! I actually brought a holiday home in Capetown and then I met somebody after having been through a divorce. It then became a bit more of a permanent holiday home. Is this where you will stay now? I never make any predictions, whose knows where life takes you. Does your husband have to travel a lot with his work as a cameraman and Director? He travels more locally. This year has been ‘pass the childcare card’, I get home and he leaves and then he gets home and I leave. When I am back from this trip he meets me with the car and then goes straight into the airport to catch his flight and I go back to the house. Do you have a place over in the UK? No, because most of the time when I am over here I am working so I have to travel anyway which means staying in hotels or friends or sometimes with my mum. I do have two flats here, but I rent them out so they are not available to me. How much time during the year are you in the UK? This year is has been a lot - fourteen trips but every year it is different. This has been a very busy year for me. I am doing six different venues on this current nine day tour. I finish up with the Bestival Festival and then I fly back to South Africa and then return again to do the LolliBop Festival. It is a lot of travelling and a lot of driving but I really enjoy it. I have a lot of ownership over this show, I wrote it and in consultation with a Director I created it. The show came off the

such as The Great Penguin Rescue on The Eden Channel. Yes, Eden channel has become very good for showcasing wildlife programmes but it is getting people to know about it that is the problem. That was a programme that was brought for two years and will probably be sold to the Animal Planet Channel after that. It was a really fun series to do actually and again we had a lot of control. It was an idea of mine and my partners and we took it to the Natural History Unit of South Africa who funded it. As you get older it is nicer to have more control of the things you do. Because that worked out so well, do you think you will build on that and produce some more programmes between you and your husband? I tell you what, we work very well together if we have a third person that can boss us both around. What doesn’t work well is when we are bossing each other around. We are not the sort of couple who could just go off together and film, we definitely need a third person. Not that we argue, but it is just better if someone else is telling us what to do. Nick is very laid back and I tend to be more get up and go. Your husband has a fantastic second name ‘Nick Chevallier’, so are you ‘Michaela Chevallier’ when you are in South Africa? No, I didn’t change my name, but my son is Oliver Felix Chevallier and if he wanted to go French he could be Olivier Chevalier.

back of my book Michaela Strachan’s Really Wild Adventures which is in poem form about all the adventures I have had while filming animals over the last twenty years. Everything from how to out spit a spitting cobra to polar bear dentistry and animal pop idols. After the book my agent and I thought we would make it into a theatre tour and then we realised that was actually quite hard work so we decided to scale it right down into a half hour show with a simple set which fits into the back of my car. So it’s just me on my own travelling to different venues and I can do it whenever I want to. We offer it around during the Easter holidays and half term weeks.
Are you planning a follow up book at all? No, the publishing world is an interesting one and thank goodness we have made a show from it. If I just had the book I think I would be disappointed but the show really gives it that extra dimension. It’s actually quite difficult to sell the volumes you need with just a book. I don’t think people realise how little the writer gets. I have been in the industry for twenty eight years and I had one quiet year during which my agent suggested that I write this book. At the time it was fun to do something creative. Springwatch and Autumnwatch have seen you back on Prime time TV but of course you have been filming many other things
Michaela recently presented The Great Penguin Rescue (Nov 2013) on the Eden channel. The series followed the penguin chick bolstering project with the seabird rescue organisation SANCCOB in Cape Town (for those of you who didn’t know, yes there are penguins in Cape Town!). Each year SANCCOB rescue late born chicks that have little chance of survival. They rehabilitate them then release them around
7 weeks later. The idea is to bolster the dwindling population of these adorable birds. Michaela became a volunteer during the filming and so ended up smelling of fish and being covered in bites! The series was full of conservation and plenty of humour! Are you still a volunteer for SANCCOB? I haven’t done anything this year, but I have offered myself as a volunteer as I am now trained and quite useful. If they ever get a big oil spill, they would call every volunteer that they have. It is nice to

In The Dog House opened at the end of June 2014 and have quickly gained a good reputation because of their passion and love for dogs. Owner Jay Michaels started this venture because she knew exactly how she wanted her dog treated when in a grooming salon and wanted to portray that trust and professionalism to the general public. ‘In The Dog House’ provides a relaxing contemporary environment in order to make the experience for your pet as stress free as possible. You can drop off and pick up your dog right outside their door. They only use the finest of dog beauty products and Bathing Packages are currently available for large and small dogs with HUGE savings! The business is proud to support the Facebook based group ‘Costa Blanca Dog Homing’. This rescue group rehomes around 100 dogs a month and has had some amazing success stories. know that I am local, skilled and available if required. Are you continuing with the BBC next year? Yes, there will be Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch. They basically had to commit to two years at RSPB Minsmere because of the infrastructure. It’s not worth setting up all of the filming infrastructure required for Springwatch for just one year. What was the highlight for you this season? It’s really hard because the things that stick in your head are usually the really dramatic things which certainly aren’t the highlights. It is amazing to see some of the behaviour, for instance we filmed a rabbits nest which was in a pile of straw, that’s unusual because they are normally underground and what happened was that they got eaten by a Crow, a Raven and a Magpie. It was actually very sad but very dramatic, it is always amazing to see predators come in and be caught on camera. You can be a wildlife watcher for years and never see that sort of thing, but it is the fact that we can now put cameras in places we never could before. Thinking about it the Bitten was a highlight. We had cameras on their nest and watching them was such a privilege view. They gave us loads of entertainment as did ‘Grub’ The Owl as we named her. I have worked with Chris Packham on and off over the last twenty six years so it is good to work with people who all like each other and support each other. If one of you is having a tired day, the other two will support you, so it is a real team effort. What about the live aspect of it? I have done a lot of live TV starting with Wide Awake TV and of course Hitman and Her was live. Live TV is great because once you have done it, it’s over. I don’t think people realise the amount of effort that goes into the day before the live show. Things are changing all the time and because it is reactive, we only really get running orders as opposed to scripts. The morning of the show we have to read our running orders and write our own scripts and learn it before the evening show. It is a very busy day and there are always last minute things which happen. It is very easy to get in a panic so you have to plan your day carefully. We have a crew of over a hundred people and apart from the editors and the producers everyone else is very busy at certain times but then they have down times where they will be sitting and chatting. If you get drawn into that, you can very easily get behind so you have to be blinkered and focused all day. I understand that you are looking forward to showing your son Ollie some of the many interesting parts of the world you have seen, what’s next on the list? I have just ticked one off my bucket list which was British Columbia. We stayed at a place called ‘Knight Inlet’ about three weeks ago. They have Grizzly Bears there and it was absolutely amazing, we really loved it. The only downside with Canada is that it is eight hours time difference so you spend a few days feeling spaced out. Antarctica is also on my bucket list, the Arctic, Baja California which I have never been to, but would love to see the Blue Whales there. I would also love to take Ollie to Kenya to see the annual migration and the list goes on and on. The programme Great British Ghosts was a bit of a change for you, how did that come about? That was such a laugh, it was basically staying at haunted

places, looking at the ghost stories and looking at the history of the buildings. I really loved it because it was a great team involved and we stayed in lovely places. We met really whacky people but unfortunately the series hasn’t been recommissioned. It came about because I think they were originally looking for another presenter who was also my agent and they were not available so they suggested me and the producers were really keen. I do have a wildlife background but I also have a big entertainment background so to do random things like this is really nice and I enjoy it. What else is happening for you this year? After the tour I have a little break at home and then I return later in the year for Autumnwatch.

DINE WITH BORDEAUX
THE GREAT BORDEAUX DINNER On 13th DECEMBER AT SWALLOWS OAST TICEHURST
For centuries wine has been produced in Bordeaux. This has led to a great understanding of the influence of the climate, the land and the grape varieties which produce the best wines in the region. Many of the vineyards are still familyowned.
Each year the winemakers use their skill and experience to blend their grapes – Cabernet and Merlot for the reds, Sauvignon and Sémillon for the whites – to produce wines of character and diversity, whose restrained style makes them especially good with food. Bordeaux is still the greatest and most important wine region in the world. So join Weald Wine Cellars at Swallows Oast for DINE WITH BORDEAUX, THE GREAT BORDEAUX DINNER to celebrate this legendary wine growing region. We have teamed up with Chateau Du Cros and The Bordeaux Wine council to bring you this unique event. We are also delighted to be able to host the event at Swallows Oast Ticehurst. Julien Boyer from Chateau du Cros will present the wines and be on hand to chat about life as Vigneron in Bordeaux. Tickets for the event are already selling so please don’t delay. Rye Arts Festival 12th-28th September 2014
C
lassical and contemporary music, literary talks, historical walks, theatre, comedy, art exhibitions and children’s events are all on the menu at the 43rd annual Rye Arts Festival, which this year runs from 14 to 29th September. Classical Music highlights include the return of the Euphonia Company with a fully-staged production of Verdi’s La Traviata on 13th Sept. All the singers, including Icelandic soprano Rannnveig Karadottir in the title role, and the musicians in the full orchestra are professionals so this is a must-see event. The Festival finishes on 28th Sept with the brilliant The English Concert – one of the world’s finest chamber orchestras. Sandwiched between are many concerts including a weeklong residency by the Piatti Quartet who will also be joined by other musicians to form a quintet and sextet, as well as giving a free gig on 21st Sept in a pub, titled Beer and Beethoven. The performer won’t be Brahms and Liszt!
Among many other highlights, including the return of pianist Nikolai Demidenko, the exciting vocal group Voces8 are not to be missed, singing on 18th Sept at Winchelsea Church which might have been built for them! British jazz legends Alan Skidmore and Peter Jones will be bringing their quintet to play a tribute to Elvin Jones, John Coltrane’s drummer. There will be folk from the award-winning Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin duo; electric blues from one of the UK’s finest exponents, West Weston’s Bluesonics; and Flossie Malavialle sings every Indie band worth its salt’s self-proclaimed biggest influence Jacques Brel, plus a bit of Edith Piaf! Last, but far from least, the Rye Arts Festival’s favourite singer, raconteur and wit Cathy Jordan is back to popular demand. And she is, once again, fronting the incomparable Dervish. The varied literary programme includes Sarah Raven talking about Vita Sackville-West’s designs for the Sissinghurst garden; Jane Gardam on her Old Filth trilogy; Richard Owen on the inspiration for DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover; Vicky Pryce on ‘doing porridge’ having taken her husband’s driving points; Henry Blofeld on… well, Blowers; and many more fascinating talks! Theatre is represented by When the Rain Washes, a one-man play about a young black man’s horrifying and yet inspiring life through and after independence in Zimbabwe, plus Bite-Size Plays – both of which wowed audiences at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. On a lighter note, Gyles Brandreth is back with his sidesplitting, sell-out show from the Edinburgh Fringe. And youngsters from the Rye Dance Centre will again perform at Rye College. But older Ryers can take part in Argentine Tango and Flamenco workshops – and then watch the real thing by professional and polished performers. The ever-popular Winchelsea Cellar Tours and tour of the Romney Marsh churches are back, together with the returning Rye in World War II walk, which has the added poignancy of being the 75 anniversary of the start of the conflict. So if music, theatre, literature or informing and inspiring speakers float your boat, check out the 60-plus events between 12th and 28th September in Rye and make sure you don’t miss the best smaller Arts Festival in the UK! More information is available by telephoning the Box Office on 01797 224442 or checking out www.ryeartsfestival. co.uk. The Box Office will be open for personal bookings at Phillips & Stubbs in Cinque Ports St, Rye, from 9.30am to 1.00pm Monday to Saturday from 11th August.

Birds of a Feather T
he end of another breeding season is nigh. (Birds that is) I think many of our garden birds have had a good season, Blue Tits, Robins, Dunnocks, Gold finches and even the Greenfinches appear to have increased in numbers both at home and at Feathers. Blue Tits in particular have been performing their acrobatics on the feeders providing me with lots of giggles and entertaining me for hours on end. I fear that Swallows and House Martins may not have been so successful this year, our usual Swallow
nest next to the shop was not used and just one solitary pair of House Martins produced a brood on the farm house. Sadly for the first time we did not have the Spotted Flycatcher nesting either, in fact - we haven’t even seen one this year.
