Stagecoach theatre School Hastings first opened in the year 2000 and for the past 16 years has gone from strength to strength offering high quality performing arts training to young people aged four to eighteen on Saturdays. There is also a summer workshop in August. Stagecoach strive to realize the potential of every child, stretching their imagination and fuelling their creativity through drama, dance and singing classes. During their time at Stagecoach, students grow in confidence and self-esteem. They develop lifelong skills, helping them to flourish at school, home and in social situations. For three hours each week , Main School students (6-18) are divided by age into small groups and work on various performance skills. Each term has a different focus. Our Early Stages (4-6) work for ninety -minutes each week over three thirty minute sessions of acting, singing and dancing. The classes help young children make friends, have fun and learn the key performance skills. All of our teachers are experienced and of course, security checked. Lessons are structured and educational yet fun and dynamic and delivered in a safe, secure environment. At Stagecoach we believe that the experience of performing gives children a sense of belonging, wellbeing and confidence. So, as you can see although our teacher’s are highly skilled and know their subjects there’s so much more to Stagecoach than singing, dancing and acting! We believe in the power of imagination and creativity! Our small class sizes ensure every child receives the attention they deserve. Recently Opened Lettings Agent Employs Local Talent for Design and Mural Projects. The Property Pad, a new lettings agent located on Havelock Road, Hastings is literally the new face on the street after commissioning local artist, Aaron Hosannah to paint a large mural featuring the face of a beautiful, 1950’s inspired pin-up girl on one wall of their premises. The mural, which also features the company’s recognizable blue Fiat 500 has a background of yellow chevrons matching the firm’s branding. The Property Pad, which specialises in Residential Lettings & Student Accommodation also put its money where its mouth is by hiring a recent graduate from The University of Brighton’s Hastings campus - Rhys Cox. Rhys produced the logo, branding and eye catching “For Rent” boards that may have already been spotted around Hastings, St Leonards-on-Sea and the surrounding areas. The Property Pad have clearly pushed the boundaries with the design aspects of the office as well as with their company branding – it doesn’t stop there though. The company has a really fresh, innovative feel about it which goes beyond the inspiring decor. They have managed to create a bold and almost playful feel, balanced perfectly with a professional, polished image but shying away from the typically staid and often stale style traditionally used by most agencies. Company Director, Gemma Dearman is committed to providing the highest level of service to each and every client. With many years’ experience managing some of the largest Student Accommodation buildings in the area, she knows exactly what it takes to successfully manage property. Her “hands on” management style, ability to ensure that each and every Tenancy runs as smoothly as possible as well as a fresh, vibrant approach to the somewhat stagnant lettings industry truly sets The Property Pad apart. All that and a fantastic mural too, this new face on the street is definitely one to watch.

Will she be able to conquer her demons and reclaim her crown as one of history’s great musical icons? Featuring Garland’s most memorable songs The Man That Got Away, Come Rain Or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and of course Somewhere Over The Rainbow, End of the Rainbow is a fiercely funny and emotionally charged musical play filled with Garland’s legendary tenacity, razor-sharp wit and once-in-a-generation voice. What’s On Magazine went along to her gala performance, spoke to Lisa for this exclusive interview, and pictured just some of the many friends who came to support her.
Lisa, can you tell us about the play It’s set during the six-weeks that Judy Garland performed at The Talk of the Town and she arrives very optimistic. She’s with husband-to-be number five and she’s free, can earn a living again and it’s all looking good. Her favourite pianist is also here to support her, but the old demons are slowly coming back to haunt her. She sadly can’t perform without the help of some
chemicals. It’s so sad. But, also really funny, too. I really want to get the message out there that it’s not a musical or a review. It’s one of those rare shows which actually encompasses everything. It’s a brilliantly written play with an award winning script from Peter Quilter and because of the nature of the story, it also features some of the most beautiful songs ever written. It’s an informative story about the life of a real person who had a very difficult life at times but is a very funny person, which is one of the ways she coped with the addiction and the demons. So you have a play that is incredibly moving, incredibly funny plus because it is all set against her six week run at The Talk of The Town you get to see her performing as well. She sadly died shortly after the time that the play is set in (1968) but, what should be a very dark play turns out to be black comedy at times, and actually mainstream comedy as well. Some of her one liners were so quick and hilarious. You very rarely get to play tragedy and comedy at such close proximity How much did you research Judy Garland before you took the role on? I went into quite a lot of research. I knew I was doing this about seven months before we started rehearsal so the first thing I did was to get an amazing vocal coach to give me the vocal stamina, not only to be able to sing every night but also to be able to sing in the style of Judy Garland. We listened to lots of her songs and the versions that we particularly liked and took those traits to use. I exercised my voice every day for those seven months, which enabled me to change my voice to sound like Judy Garland.

There was also a lot of emotional preparation. I read everything I could get my hands on and watched every YouTube clip and every interview with her as well as all her films. It would be very easy to say ‘I am not going to do an impression, I am just going to follow the script’ or alternatively ‘I am going to try and be Judy Garland, so the people watching the play feel like they are watching Judy Garland’. I thought that if it were me I would choose the second option. If I came to see this play, I would want to be reminded of the woman that the play was about. So I have tried to give the audience Judy Garland but there will also be aspects about her which the audience will not recognise because this follows her off stage character as well as her on stage one. We’ve had some amazing reviews so I think we are getting away with it well. There are only three of us in the play and I am never off stage. It is an absolute honour to have the opportunity to do a piece of theatre like this as an actor but also, it’s the most terrifying and demanding thing I have ever done. The singing is the thing that I am least stressed about because I have been trained to sing. Judy was a technically well trained singer - she was actually trained in Opera so I had to follow the same sort of training. This means my voice is strong and I am not worried about losing my singing voice as I perform eight shows a week. The thing that could potentially go with me, is my speaking voice (weirdly enough), because you don’t support it as you do when you are singing. When I am screaming and beating up husband number five on stage, I have to be very careful that I don’t get too carried away. Is it still as scary now that you have been performing in the role for a few weeks? I am enjoying it now. There is so much fun to be had with it. I haven’t toured for years, but even though it is hard to be on tour it just feels like the best fun in the world, and I cannot wait for each night to share this play with the audience.
Kate Thornton
You have had lots of your friends come along to see you perform such as Kate Thornton, Carol Vorderman and Carol McGiffin. Does that make you more nervous knowing that they are out there in the audience? No, it is more enjoyable, all my girlfriends always rock up to support me and it is more fun when they do. At the end of the day they are my mates and will always love everything, and get behind everything I do. Carol McGiffin paid me the biggest complement, she said ‘Oh, babes, I wasn’t bored once’. So that will do for me. Jackie Brambles & Carol McGiffin

Do you think the pressures that Judy Garland was under during her acting career are still there today? Yes I think those pressures are still there, I don’t think her story is any different to Amy Winehouses’. You get people who try and engineer you into a certain world and actually you become so famous that you don’t know what is genuine and what isn’t. You have to perform because you are the bread winner for everybody and if you don’t perform you are letting everybody down. That kind of pressure will always happen to performers. Judy was given drugs by her mother at the age of 12 and forced to take them when she was a teenager. All Judy Garland wanted was the love of one man. I get the impression from studying her that she would have been happy just leading a quiet life but had gone down the road of performing so far that she couldn’t turn back. She didn’t feel validated unless an audience were showing her appreciation because that was the only love that she understood. They often say it is the star who changes when they become famous but it is usually the people around them who change. It is good to tell the story of a real star because we don’t seem to have that level of star any more. Back then fame was a product of being super talented but today people can be famous for just being famous. With the show being so well received already, will you now be able to pick and choose your roles in the future? You never know in this business, I have been doing this long enough to know that there are no guarantees. All you can do as a performer is to be the best you can be in the role that you are playing. I was determined to make this work because it just wasn’t an option to do it badly. It was such a success for others in the beginning when it went to Broadway, that I wasn’t about to bring out a touring version that was anything less than right up there with the original.

Animal & Pet Services
A RABBIT IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR EASTER! Rabbits are a popular pet; unfortunately also one of the most neglected, often left without company, with a poor diet, living in cramped conditions. Highly intelligent and social animals, they live in large numbers in the wild; this need for companionship has not changed through their domestication. If seeing cute bunny pictures makes you feel you would like one as a pet, please consider very carefully whether you can cater properly for their long term care. Contact a rescue centre like The Kit Wilson Trust, where you will be given the correct information and can have the pleasure of caring for a rabbit that has not had the best start in life. It is important to neuter your rabbit; unwanted litters have little chance of finding good homes.

Myself and herself were off to the cinema in Hailsham last week and decided to go for something to eat first. Our friends recommended Callenders Restaurant at the top of the High street. They regularly go there after their weekly shop. So we parked up and popped in, convenient, and no parking charges in town, great! You should go too. A fabulous welcome, and great food. A fantastic char grilled steak, and beautifully fresh fish. A wonderful selection of salads. Amazing home-made desserts and great wines. After the cinema I said I couldn’t wait for the sequel, the film was o.k, but I’d love another excuse to go to Callenders. “Well then it’s a good job I booked us in for Sunday lunch” she said, “their prices are so reasonable you don’t need an excuse to go.”

Chelsea 2016 Breakthrough horticultural science and technology features in key educational area of the Great Pavilion • Impact of nutrition, cultivation, locality and more highlighted by nine pivotal exhibits • Coventry University demonstrates the benefits of gardening on our health At this year’s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show (24 – 28 May), sponsored by M&G Investments, the Discovery Zone, an area of the Great Pavilion dedicated to science and education, will investigate the way in which our health, happiness and community is impacted by horticulture and the world around us. From the importance of beans and pulses to the best plants with which to surround yourself, as well as tips on how to get as much as possible from your garden, the Discovery Zone offers visitors the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of scientific exhibits, including a special display by Coventry University on how to transform your
garden into a ‘green gym’. More beans please! Due to the increased demand on food resources by an ever-growing global population, the United Nations (UN) has designated 2016 the ‘International Year of the Pulse’. Building on this demand, Capel Manor College has created ‘Beans, Beans’ to highlight the importance of this particular legume. Split into three sections, from a ‘rustic green wall’ to a ‘bistro garden’, the exhibit explains the reliance on pulses in some of the world’s poorest populations, as well as the capacity for increased pulse growth in the developed world, offering an alternative source of protein.
Preview Gesundheit… Love gardening but hate sniffling and sneezing your way through the hedgerows? Worry no more as ‘The Low Allergy Garden’ by the Royal College of Pathologists features a garden full of flowering plants, trees and shrubs not associated with respiratory allergies in humans. Experts will also be on hand to provide guidance on which plants to use in gardens frequented by respiratory allergy sufferers. Tickets are now available on 20 – 24 July: www.rhs.org.uk/flowershows
Putting your best foot forward Coventry University’s ‘Healthy Gardens, Healthy Gardeners’ exhibit highlights the physical impact of gardening on the body, proving that – if done correctly – this undervalued form of exercise can offer greenfingered enthusiasts an extremely beneficial work-out. Featuring a motion-capture suit performing typical gardening activities, Coventry University will highlight all of the vital statistics involved in using your own ‘green gym’, demonstrating the benefits of horticulture as the means to an improved and healthy lifestyle.

Things are happening at Horam Manor Farm this year.
John and Bernie of JB Mower Services worked in the workshop at Cutting Edges Mower Services in Marley Lane. John and Bernie of JB Mower Services have now been at Kent Street Nurseries for nearly 5 years now and offer servicing and repairs to all kinds of mowers and garden machinery. They don’t have a showroom but can supply most types of new machines to order. You will find easy parking on site.
Hidden behind Horam’s housing development site for the first few months of 2016, Lakeside Café, Horam Manor Fishery, Horam Manor Riding Stables and the newly converted Cartlodge have been quite cut off. Now however the Farm venue, with its own small rural museum and stunning Nature Walks, is staging a grand re-opening on Sunday May 1st and Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd. If you haven’t visited before, this is the time. There are some surprises in store for regular visitors too. Loyal customers of May’s Terracotta pots, plants, statues and garden ornaments were dismayed to see the closing down signs at the old site at Clayhill. Now May and Ernie will re-open their unique collection of pots and ornaments from around the world at Horam Manor Farm. Come and see the magnificent display on May 1st and 2nd, and then join in the action at the Farm. There will be craft demonstrations at the Cartlodge, with Punch and Judy, bouncy castle and pony rides to amuse the younger visitors. Browse the stalls, visit craftsmen in their Open Workshops, view vintage agricultural machinery and then relax by the Great Pond, explore the nature trails or enjoy a meal at the Café.

Health, Beauty & Fitness Heart Research UK’s weekly Healthy Tip –
Put a spring in your step Spring is upon us and we’re finally leaving the long winter nights behind. Running and jogging provide a great cardiovascular workout, helping you to build fitness, burn calories and shed that spare tyre as well as boosting your mood. It will also help keep your blood pressure and cholesterol levels healthy and reduce your risk of developing heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Don’t forget - you don’t have to run a marathon to see the benefits for your heart and your body. Pace yourself • Start small with a walk round the block, running for small sections at a time and walking in between. Pick up the pace and distance gradually. • Once you’ve mastered a small loop, you can try doing it twice or adding sections: 100 yards, will soon become a kilometre, then a mile. Try using a phone app to log your progress.
E9 a healthy alternative to sugar filled energy drinks. As our days get busier and we make ever more demands on ourselves it is all too easy to end up feeling exhausted. Far too often, people reach for unhealthy energy drinks or caffeine to supplement their diminishing energy levels. Such choices provide little to no nutritional value and load the body with unnecessary amounts of sugar /caffeine which further stresses the body and often results in the ‘sudden crash.’ With its unique Pina Colada flavor, E9 replenishes your system and delivers long lasting energy derived from healthy sources. It is a sugar free mixture containing energizing ingredients such as L-arginine, a potent blend of amino acids, a unique combination of B-vitamins, and natural caffeine from guarana and other herbal extracts. Together these ingredients contribute to the reduction of mental and physical tiredness and fatigue leaving you feeling strong, alert and energized at the end of the day. Running time and place • Think about where you would like to run. It may be a small circuit around your local park, a nice jog along a nearby canal or river or around your neighbourhood. • Think about when to best fit a run in your day: early morning, lunchtimes, home from work or later in the evening – it’s important to find what works best for you. Running style • A hand held water bottle will help you keep hydrated, especially as the weather gets warmer and you work up more of a sweat. Aim high • Set yourself an end goal. Heart Research UK has a whole host of events to help you do so; from ‘My Run, My Way’ where you choose the place and distance, to the iconic ‘Vitality London 10K’. You could even take on the world’s biggest half marathon in the Great North Run later this year. Find out more here: http://heartresearch.org.uk/events So get into gear and bring out the runner in you this spring. Clock up those miles slowly but surely and get on the road to a healthier heart, body and soul. #runforit
