olunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June 2015. The East Sussex based charity, Association of Carers, offer a complimentary lunch during volunteer’s week where they present awards to show recognition and thanks to all their volunteers. Doreen is one of their volunteers and here’s her story: I wanted to give something back to the community and meet some new people, too. I approached Association of Carers to learn about becoming a Befriending with Respite Volunteer. I was matched with Fausto and Immacolata. They were so warm, friendly and welcoming that I immediately felt at ease. Fausto had a stroke, which affected his speech and mobility. My role is to give Immacolata a break by spending three hours a week with Fausto. We have played games and have been able to build up a good relationship despite his being unable to speak. I’ve gained a sense of personal satisfaction from knowing I am helping. It has developed into a natural friendship where it feels more like I am visiting an aunt and uncle for a weekly chat and coffee. I cannot believe I have found a volunteering role where the people I am supporting have become like family

Embracing cultures from across the globe Kings Road, St Leonards offers an exciting and vibrant atmosphere. Kings Road has always been an exciting place for shopping but more recently the area seems to be attracting more and more people. True to the area’s flamboyant style, Kings Road embodies the nature of St Leonards and Hastings. “People are shopping more often in Kings Road and spending more money. We want it not just to be a retail destination but a sociable space,” says Charles Stewart, owner of Kings Road Antiques, which recently featured on T.V.’s Antiques Road Trip. Kings Road has never lost its reputation as a trendy destination but yet, more recently its influence has grown. Kings Road is home to a mixture of unique shops and brands and offers a buzzing alternative to the soulless shopping centres. Another recent addition has been the introduction of The Kings Road Street Market. There are eight street markets this year and stalls include crafts, vintage, artisan goods and street food, mixed with a vibrant atmosphere, entertainments, special offers and activities for children. The street markets run from 10am to 4pm. If you’re interested in having a stall, contact Anton Burton: stleonardsmarket@live.co.uk Kings Road has gone through many transformations over the years, and latest transformation has seen it become a more upmarket centre for chic and quirky shopping. From Antiques to Greeting Cards, Art Noveau Tea Rooms to a well stocked bakery, it seems that it bucks the trend of the chain shop by offering unique and individual stores catering for all tastes.

here is an old African proverb “Let him speak who has seen with his eyes” and reading these few wise words it could easily be extended to add… “heard with his ears, smelt with his nose, touched with his hands and felt with his heart”, for anyone visiting Africa will have their senses stimulated more than anywhere else on earth. Is it because we all can trace our roots to this ancient land and each of us therefore retains a piece on it deep within us? Is it the feeling of space and wildness? Is it the unique wildlife? Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that once experienced, Africa will call you back again and again. But where to start? Quality advice on when and where to travel is essential and Southern Cross Travel and their partners African Pride are able to provide prospective clients with just this. Africa is a huge continent and the choice of holiday ideas is vast. Most holiday-goers incorporate a safari at some point of their holiday - this is your chance to experience the Great Migration in full force in east Africa, see gorillas in the mist of the Mountains of the Moon
in Rwanda, be in awe at the grace and elegance of a leopard, the gentleness and strength of a herd of elephants and the masters of the African bush and plains, or a view a pride of majestic lions.
Planning an African holiday requires expert advice and using our many years of knowledge and experience we work with you to ensure that each one is tailored to meet your own individual requirements.
Of course, each holiday to Africa is different and there is more on offer than just safaris. Amazing scenery, world-class wineries, ancient rock art, beautiful coasts, whales and dolphins, stunning accommodation and most of all the people who are so proud of their heritage and are always keen to impart a little flavour of Africa to all their visitors are all on offer when you visit Africa.
So choose Southern Cross Travel and African Pride for your holiday to Africa, and as the old African proverb says…..”see with your own eyes”.
Choosing the best time to travel is essential and this is where expert advice and knowledge from Southern Cross Travel will help. In general terms, southern Africa has seasons that are the opposite of ours but it is bordered by two very different oceans – the cool Atlantic and the warm Indian – and with a lot of its area in the sub-tropical regions. In contract, much of eastern Africa is on or near the equator with a tropical climate and distinct rainy seasons, so careful planning is essential to ensure you have the best trip!
Call Southern Cross Travel today on 01892 783986 (Wadhurst) or 01797 229200 (Rye) or email africa@southerncrosstravel.co.uk to arrange an appointment to discuss your Africa holiday with one of our travel experts.

SENLAC CLASSIC CAR SHOW AND CRAFT FAYRE Bodiam Sunday 21st June 2015
It’s Father’s Day on June 21st and this must mean it is time for the Senlac Classic Car Show. Billed as one of the big local shows, the success of the Senlac is built on an appeal to the whole family. True there will be hundreds of fantastic classic cars plus military and commercial vehicles; yes there will be charity and craft stalls in a broad avenue to tempt all tastes; of course there will be oodles of rides for children; plus there will be the food and drink outlets and then there will be the day long entertainment featuring even more stars than ever before. If you want a great day out this is the place to be. The show last year was once again the biggest ever and well over £10,000 was given to local and Rotary charities. The 400 or so classic vehicles on show formed the centrepiece of a great display, thousands of visitors thronged the showground helping to raise more funds for charity than any other day in the show’s 23 year history. What makes this show different? It is all about families, all about our shared history and all about a celebration of Dad! It is also all about co-operation; each year we are stunned by the support from local Bodiam people, from local businesses from the classic car show fraternity and from the generous crowds who come to have a fun day and in so doing help to add to the £100,000 total which the show has raised for charity. The Senlac Show sets out to create the friendliness of the village fayre whilst at the same time offering a vast range of activities to celebrate DADs! Multi-RHS Gold medal winner Dan Pearson returns to show after more than a decade awarded ‘Best Show Garden’
eventy seven coveted RHS Gold Medals have been awarded this year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments, marking a hugely successful year for exhibitors. A total of 7 Gold Medals, 7 Silver-Gilt Medals and 1 Silver Medal were awarded to Show Gardens, with no Bronze medals in sight. The Laurent-Perrier Chatsworth Garden scooped Best Show Garden, welcoming back designer Dan Pearson to RHS Chelsea after an 11 year absence. For the 2015 show, LaurentPerrier and Chatsworth have come together for the first time to create a unique show garden, marking Chatsworth’s debut at Chelsea. Taking the prominent triangle position, Dan Pearson’s passion for naturalism and the wilder side of gardening is evident throughout the garden which represents a small, less trodden, part of the 105-acre Chatsworth Garden. RHS Judge, James Alexander Sinclair, said: “It is

extraordinary that while in a garden in central London, one could almost feel you are on a Derbyshire hillside surrounded by wild plants and towering Paxtonian rocks.” Best Fresh Garden went to The Dark Matter Garden for National Schools’ Observatory by Howard Miller Design. Inspired by the Dark Matter which fills the universe, the garden aims to help explain an aspect of the fundamental workings of the universe not generally understood. Best Artisan Garden was awarded to The Sculptor’s Picnic Garden by Walker’s Nurseries, represent the garden of a sculptor, a place to rest and eat - sitting on fungi inspired sculptural seats and eating from a tree stump table all created by artist Hilary Walker. Sixty-eight nurseries and growers within the Great Pavilion, the floral heart of the show, achieved RHS Gold Medals for their displays. The Diamond Jubilee Award for the best display
in the Great Pavilion which was introduced in celebration of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, was awarded to Birmingham City Council with their floral celebration of 300 years of Birmingham City Cathedral. Hillier Nurseries and Garden Centres also clinched a record 70th consecutive Gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, securing the nursery’s status as the most successful exhibitor the show’s 102-year-old show history. Heading up the Discovery Zone, Wadworth: The Hop Cycle Introduction also won Gold in the Great Pavilion. Their exhibit tells the historic story of the uses and properties of the hop, which has been used for centuries to provide one of the main flavourings for beer. Sparsholt College explain all with two garden areas: one planted with species that make or flavour drinks, and the other a pub garden to in which to relax and enjoy.

store in 1935, it has grown to become one of the largest independent food superstores in England. The 35,000 sq. ft. store still occupies the original site – albeit considerably extended. MotoFest brings Motor Sport home for a second glorious year… Bexhill MotoFest is a massive family friendly festival of everything biking. Thousands of motorcycles roar into the usually sedate seaside town to celebrate the birthplace of British motor and motorcycle sport. Now in its second great year the event once again brings a unique and exciting style of motorcycle sport to the sea front car park, live music on the De La Warr terrace and presents a unique MotorcycleAsART exhibition. There will also be a charity motorcycle cavalcade into the town lead by the local 1066 HOG Harley Davidson owners group. And the great thing is its all absolutely FREE to attend. FAB Mini Moto Racing will be organising an under 13s championship on the main sea front car park as well as giving everyone the opportunity to “have a go”. Mini Moto Racing is just as exciting as full blown GP or Superbike Racing but done on micro motorcycles that look no bigger than remote control toys. There will also be Mini GP demonstrations, basically one third size GP bikes , and Mini Sidecar racing. MotorcycleAsART is now also in its second year and is already attracting international attention for the unique way that we combine the motorcycle with art in various mediums. There is also a great line up of Live Music headlined by last year’s massive success KICK and local hillbillie favourites the Cajun Dawgs as well as a family funfair, lots of traders and exhibitors.

Claudette Leet Here at my Exhibition Space you will find a vision and creative thinking that makes you want to look and ask questions – and then look some more. Rhythms, tensions and polarities emerge reflecting emotions mostly in an abstract way, and sometimes even non-figuratively - but always completely spontaneously, intuitively and in an investigative manner, abstracted from my residual memory and imagination. It’s not Art for the faint-hearted but for the imagination of thinkers - the individualistic mind that is prepared to let go of institutional brainwashing and perimeter logic - it allows you to find yourself and be who you are.
