Oven Wizards Testimonials

Just had our double oven cleaned by Paul, so very pleased with my oven, looks brand new! Would not hesitate in recommending Oven Wizards. Denise Gerrard-Glass. (Hastings) We are so delighted with the oven clean that you did for us today, it is absolutely fantastic. Thank you for working so hard to achieve the results. Dr Blair (Eastbourne) Compared with other oven cleaning companies I have used in the past Paul went the extra mile when cleaning my oven. He stripped out the racks, back panel and fan and also removed and split the oven door to clean the dirty glass that I could not get to. I will definitely recommend the service to my friends. Hailsham

T

he Arlington Bluebell Walk team has announced that their enchanted ancient oak wood, one of the most beautiful bluebell displays in the UK, will open to the public on April 9th to May 10th 2015.

The Arlington Bluebell Walk, which takes in three working farms, has been delighting countryside lovers and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for Sussex charities since it first opened in 1972. There are seven different walks to try in the 23-acre Bluebell wood, including the gravelled Blue Walk, which gives access to everyone including mobility scooters, wheelchairs and pushchairs. Mobility scooters are also available to borrow free of charge. Fifteen charities will take part in this year’s event, fundraising for their different causes by providing food and drink to walkers. The Arlington Bluebell Walk has raised more than £750,000, at today’s value, for over 60 local charities since the attraction opened to the public 43 years ago. Two new charities are involved this year, including Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance who are sponsored by several local Lions Clubs as part of their project to raise £250,000 for a Night Flying project for the Air Ambulance;

and the JPK Sussex Project, raising the capital costs for a building in Eastbourne for people with learning disabilities to live, when their parent carers are no longer able to care for them. John McCutchan, Farmer at Bates Green Farm near Hailsham, who created the walks and looks after the wood, said: “Bluebells signify that spring has well and truly arrived and warmer weather is on its way. A woodland walk among a carpet of bluebells is an experience to delight all the senses – from the scent of the native bluebell to the crunch underfoot of old autumn leaves and birdsong up above. The Arlington Bluebell Walk has walks and activities which allow people of all ages and physical abilities to experience this stunning natural phenomenon.” The fleeting beauty of the spring bluebells has inspired writers, such as the Bronte sisters, and artists for generations. Photographers are encouraged to capture the sea of blue in the annual Arlington Bluebell Walk Photographic Competition. One of the winning entries will be featured on the front of the 2016 attraction leaflet and the winning entries from 2015 will be on display.

There is also a children’s quiz with prizes awarded by the National Farmers Union. The quizzes are based on the different colour coded walks. Battle Marbles Match and Easter Bonnet Parade Abbey Green, Battle, Sussex April 3 2015

T

he game of marbles is over 3000 years old, with clay marbles having been found in the tombs of the ancient Egyptians, and the game is alive and kicking in a number of Sussex towns. Sussex marbles season lasts for 45 days and in the last century was very closely defined between Ash Wednesday and 12 noon on Good Friday, so much so that Good Friday (and in some places Ash Wednesday) were known as ‘Marbles Day’. At Lenten time toyshop windows displayed tops, skipping ropes, hoops and marbles. These colourful tiny balls of clay, stone and glass were the main attraction to both young and old alike. One of these towns is Battle, East Sussex, site of the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066. Each Good Friday, in the imposing shadow of Battle Abbey local teams gather to play in this traditional annual competition dating back to the early 1900s and revived in Battle in 1948, with lady entrants permitted for the first time in 1972.

The traditional Sussex smock was ‘de rigueur’ (or brown short fishermens’ smocks as these were easier to obtain) until the early 1950s and the game ended at noon sharp when marbles and hot cross buns were handed out to the local children. The smock of the late Frank Anderson, who died in 1967, can be seen in the Battle Museum of Local History, along with a small display of marbles and photos. The Rev W. D. Parish wrote in 1879 about the game as played at Selmeston, East Sussex, “I always wondered why so many people in the country districts of Sussex should devote themselves to marbles

Ladies Team from Battle Chamber

on Good Friday, till I discovered that the marble season is strictly defined between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; and on the last day of the season it seems to be the object of every man and boy to play marbles as much as possible: they will play in the road at the church gate till the very last moment before service, and begin again the instant they are out of church. Is it possible that it was appointed as a Lenten sport, to keep people from more boisterous and mischievous enjoyments?” Nowadays, local pubs and businesses enter teams of 5 players and fancy dress has replaced the traditional smocks. The number of entrants has risen to over 120, all eager to win both the marbles and the fancy dress competitions. There is the popular all-comers board for spectators of all ages to give marbles a try and, as tradition dictates, there’s a free children’s marble scramble at noon with 1000 marbles up for grabs at the end of the competition. Easter eggs now replace the hot cross buns that used to be given out and there is a separate Easter bonnet competition for the children, with last year’s entry numbers reaching 65. ‘Flick-off’ is at 10 am on Good Friday – 3 April 2015. As ever, the rules include no donkey dropping and the umpire’s decision is not negotiable!

ith its exacting levels of service, a commitment to excellence in both food and drink and a beautifully historic setting, The Bull Inn at Battle is undoubtedly one of the areas finest foodie pubs.

Marrying a buzzy bar area with a spacious restaurant, The Bull Inn offers a completely inspiring dining experience and regularly hosts popular Food Theme Nights. Enticed in by the warm wafts of pastry What’s On Magazine went along to enjoy their ‘British Pie Night’. Dishes were superbly prepared, with fresh, quality ingredients and generous portion sizes. A choice of 5 starters included Deep Fried Brie in wonderfully crunchy breadcrumbs with juicy Cranbery sauce, served with a crisp salad. With a choice of 8 different pies, we had the choice of all the classic and favourites from The Traditional Scotch Pie with minced mutton and lamb, to the Homemade Steak & Kidney Pie, cooked in ‘Bull Bitter’ and topped with puff pastry. Not forgetting the Manzies of Depford traditional pie, and the Chicken and Leek Pie which had rich buttery shortcrust pastry and was filled to the brim with delicious chicken and flavoursome sauce. Dishes were served on large white dishes crammed with a choice of perfectly seasoned New Potatoes, Chips or Mashed Potato together with a generous helping of Fresh Seasonal Vegetables, Mixed Salad or Braised Red cabbage. Desserts were way too good to leave behind and the Banoffee Pie was absolutely superb. Friendly staff ensured everything ticked along nicely, with plenty of good humour and knowledge of the menu and the evening was indeed another winter-warming winner. The Bull Inn is a magnificent pub serving up great food and good beers in an incredibly warm atmosphere.... What’s On Ed.

PROPERTY MOVING INTO SALES Polecat Properties are delighted to announce our official launch of our much anticipated move into sales on 2nd April 2015. The decision to add sales to our service alongside lettings feels like a natural progression given our background and experience. Lucy Marlow whom will be heading up our sales division was previously employed as a property lawyer so fully understands the selling process and the legal aspects relating to the sale of residential property. Since joining Polecat properties in June 2014 Lucy has not only bought this wealth of experience to the office but continued her training in the sale of residential property from an estates agent’s perspective. We are very lucky to have an employee whom truly understands the process from the point of instruction up to the date of completion. Kate Lovering, company director whom will be working closely alongside Lucy in the sales division has a background of property development and hence has vast experience of property sales from both the point of view of the vendor and the buyer. Complimenting her personal experience is an abundance of training, she has already achieved the level 3 award for the sale of residential property and is currently studying for the level 4 award. However we believe that qualifications and academia only get you so far, to fully understand the range of caveats and challenges involved in house sales, personal experience is essential. Combined, Lucy and Kate via their own individual lives have at one time been; the first time buyer, the buyer in search of the perfect family home, the investment buyer, the buyer looking to completely redevelop, the buyer able to see beyond what’s there and look for potential, and the buyer thinking about the future. Whatever your selling or buying needs, we believe we have the personal and professional experience to draw upon to help you either sell or buy your home or just offer you some advice.

We are really excited by our new venture and would like to thank everybody in advance for all their support and we ask all readers to please keep us in their thoughts should they be looking to either buy or sell a property. The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.

If you have any questions about letting your property, or would like free, no obligation advice please call us on 01424 751805. - 37 -

Davina McCall With a career spanning more than twenty years, Davina McCall has hosted numerous British TV programmes and is probably best known as host of iconic shows such as Big Brother and the BAFTA award-winning Long Lost Family. In addition to her extraordinary TV career and charity work, Davina has launched a bestselling series of fitness DVDs. She also has her own line of fitness equipment with Argos. But her most important role is wife to Matthew and mum to Holly, Tilly and Chester. What’s On Magazine met up with Davina at The BBC Good Food Eat Well Show. Davina, can you tell us about your new book ‘5 Weeks To Sugar-Free’ and the inspiration behind it? My relationship with sugar changed when my sister was diagnosed with cancer and the nutritionist who spoke to her said the first thing he wanted her to do was to cut sugar out of her diet. Basically they said sugar is just very bad for cancer because it just feeds tumours. I had always been told that fat was the bad thing, so this changed everything for me. I researched the subject and what I found was a complete surprise. We need fat, we need protein and carbohydrate, but we don’t need sugar.

Of course people think I am mad because these foods have always been associated with treats and gifts, or the thing we turn to when we are really sad. It is something that makes you think you are feeling better, but it’s actually just a crutch. Sugar is hidden in so many foods and we think we cannot live without it but actually once you do kick the habit you think ‘my gosh it’s like being free’. I used to be a sugar addict and would raid the cupboards for chocolate, even stealing my children’s Easter eggs. Now I have gone sugar free, I want to help others do the same thing. My new book is called ‘Five Weeks to Sugar Free’ and it is a process to help wean you off sugar and that sweet tooth. I will still have some treats like brownies and flapjacks made from maple syrup and honey which are natural sugars but I don’t feel like I am cheating too much.

22/03/2015 21:15:00

The other point I would like to make about this book, is that it is not a diet book, it’s about getting yourself sugar free and having a healthier lifestyle. I gave all my favourite recipes to a home economist who made up healthier versions of my favourite meals. I also wanted to have really good pictures which I like to see when I am following a recipe in a book. I would encourage people who have the book to send me pictures of their creations on twitter. People have also been sending me alternatives and things they like to do which I really like getting. Where did you get your love for food? My granny was amazing, she loved cooking. I moved in with her in 1970 when I was 3 and she was a real home cooker. She looked after me brilliantly and she was the ‘queen’ of the one pot cooking, which features quite a lot in this book. It was a weird time because during the 70’s convenience food really began to become popular, so I was brought up half on really amazing home cooking and half on Buttoni tinned ravioli and Knor packet soup. I still like the Knor soup but I cannot look at a tin of ravioli without feeling ill. I am half French and I used to spend many of my holidays in France. They still don’t have tinned ravioli so I think my love for food definitely came from France. I think one of the most important things is that the French take time over eating their meals so we try and sit down and eat with our children, it is very tempting not to as we all have busy lives and are trying to eat on the run but actually it is important to put your ipad’s and phones down and sit with your family to enjoy a good meal.

Do you ever feel tempted to have a sugary treat? I did my Sport Relief Challenge last year which completely got me off the wagon, I had been sugar free for 3 years before that, but this challenge was really hard and they wanted me to eat 8,000 calories a day, so during that week I was having to have gels full of sugar, sweets, cake, flapjacks and anything they could get me to eat. It was very hard to come back off it after that week and I found myself rifling through the cupboards and even eating chocolate on my way to bed. Sugar is incredibly addictive. What’s your sugar free treat? As I don’t have that yearning anymore for sweetness, my treats are things like nuts. I never thought I would be saying that, but actually I now just prefer savoury rather than sweet things. The desserts that I have in the book use maple syrup and honey as the sweetening ingredient but they are actually much less sweet than a normal flapjack or brownie. These desserts help you to wean yourself off the very high sugar in ‘shop brought’ cakes so you end up not craving these things anymore. Is it difficult to persuade your children to follow the same advice? Yes, it’s incredibly difficult, I try to persuade them to steer away from any food that has colouring or additives in it because after eating it they are literally bouncing off the walls. In our house, Sunday is sweetie day, so everyone gets three little sweets or candy sticks. What they tend to do now is save them, so I think they have a healthy relationship with sugar. If I don’t let them eat any sugar they are still going to eat sugar at school and it wouldn’t work. I am hoping when they are older, they will make sensible decisions about policing their own sugar content.

I have about eight different main course variations that I regularly prepare at home. We have discovered all sorts of different types of pasta and I now serve whole wheat pasta which is now much tastier than when it was first introduced. You can also get spelt pasta which is much lower in gluten and it’s really nice. Shows like the BBC Good Food Eat Well Show are so good because they encourage ordinary people to look at more healthy foods. I was terrified of spelt before I wrote this book. You feel like you don’t know what to do with all these new ingredients but actually you use them in the same way as you would use regular ingredients. My book aims to dispel the myths that these foods are somehow scary. How do you cope with foods that have hidden sugar in them? I actually now make my own granola, so I know exactly what I am eating. I also have eggs for breakfast, with avocado. One of the worst things you can buy is tomato ketchup and we have a recipe in the book for an alternative to that. I also make a lot of bread which is so easy to do. You can get a Panasonic bread machine for about £50. You just put everything in, press the button, and that’s it, four hours later you have got a delicious hot loaf.

Do you eat a lot of fruit? Yes, although I hardly ever have fruit juice because it is extremely sugary with none of the roughage or fibre in it. I will have fruit as a snack, and I try and eat it with the skins on because it is good for you and it’s also an important part of your diet. Using fruit is also a very good way of weaning yourself off sugar as long as you don’t do it with juices. Do you find healthy alternatives to the regular ingredients hard to find and expensive? They can be. I do lots of shopping on-line so I haven’t had too much problem finding those sorts of things. I also find quite a lot locally and I always go for the healthiest option. As this is becoming more of a mass market interest, the prices will inevitably come down. I think it is disgusting that some companies will charge you more for a product just because it is healthy, as it cannot be any more expensive to produce than any other. For some reason they think it is a premium brand if it is healthy, which to me feels wrong. I think this is changing and I would like to bring out a range of food that is exactly the same price as anything else and that something I am working on. Could you tell us about your new website you have just launched called ‘Get Fit With Davina’? Lots of people have been asking me the best way to lose

weight. This website is a way of combining the exercise I promote in my fitness DVD’s and the healthy eating from the book. It will feature a plan specifically tailored to you, so you will input your specific details and it will tailor make an exercise programme specifically for you and your personal situation. If you have never exercised before we will take it easy with you, but if you are a gym bunny then we will go hard. We send you a meal plan designed by our nutritionists to help you boost your metabolic rate. You often meet people who are just able to burn their food off naturally, well we try and change your metabolism so that you can do the same thing. We have had extraordinary results from our tests.

Harrods Announces First Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

F

or the first time in Harrods’ history, the luxury department store will be exhibiting a concept garden at the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show from 19th - 23rd May 2015.

‘The Fragrance Garden’, created in collaboration with award-winning garden designer Sheena Seeks, will be a celebration of perfume through the medium of flowers. Taking the art of perfume making as its theme, the concept garden will reflect the cross-fertilisation of nature and science, as well as traditional floral perfumes. Inspired by the 19th Century artisan tradition of ‘enfleurage’, a technique whereby the scent of flowers is captured in wax, on one side of the garden, flowers will appear enclosed in oversized laboratory beakers and test tubes, whilst on the adjacent side; they reappear, transformed into giant paper blooms. Incorporating digital innovation, the garden will also feature augmented reality images on giant screens dividing the garden, which will leap into life when viewed through a phone or tablet. Deborah Bee, Harrods Director of Creative Marketing, comments “We’re delighted to be exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the first time, in 2015. We are committed to giving our customers an innovative experience and creating a concept garden in collaboration with an award-winning designer is an ideal platform from which to do this.” Designer, Sheena Seeks continued “This is a fantastic opportunity, working with Harrods, to create a truly innovative garden. Designing this garden has given me the freedom to explore the idea of the garden as a space where nature meets technology.”

To book tickets: 0844 338 7546 or www.rhs.org.uk/chelsea Ticket prices range from £23 to £68. Tickets must be booked in advance.

The will does not take effect until the person dies but it can be changed at any time prior to death.

Wildlife Birds of a Feather Extinction is a natural phenomenon predicted by Darwin in his theory of evolution. A species goes extinct if it is not able to adapt to changes in it’s environment, or compete effectively with other organisms. These days human intervention is the No1 reason for rapid extinction. Hunting, habitat destruction and the over exploitation of wildlife means that many different types of birds, plants and animals are being pushed to the edge of extinction. We have about 10,000 species of birds, with an estimated 1,200 considered to be under threat of extinction. In the last 500 years almost 200 species of birds have become extinct all because of human intervention. The Passenger Pigeon in the early 1800s was probably the most numerous bird in the world,

with an estimated population of at least three billion, yet, by 1900, none survived in the wild. The species had gone from extraordinarily populous to extinct in a human life span. We did that. The Dodo, (from dead as a Dodo fame) one of the planets most iconic bird species was wiped out in the 1600’s - we did that. Is all this natural evolution? One species of our planet wiping out 100’s of others, I don’t think so. We have the power, the knowledge and the resources to prevent more of this awful destruction, we just need to pull our fingers out. We Do Not Inherit the Earth from Our Ancestors; We Borrow It from Our Children...
