Classical and contemporary music, literary talks, historical walks, film, theatre, art exhibitions, artist in residence and children’s events are all on the menu at the 44th annual Rye Arts Festival, which this year runs from 11th to 27th September. Classical Music highlights include the welcome return of Euphonia Company with a fully-staged production of Mozart’s deservedly popular Don Giovanni on 12th and also 26th September. All the singers, and the musicians in the full orchestra, are professionals so this is a must-see event.

much, much more on offer during the fortnight! The varied literary programme includes Guy Fraser-Sampson talking about EF Benson, Lamb House and Rye - a subject he knows well as he has written three sequels to the series! Sir Robert Worcester will be discussing the relevance today of Magna Carta on its 800th anniversary. Professor Dave Goulson is an entomologist who gets a buzz out of bees – and will share his enthusiasm for them! Theatre is represented by Martin Wimbush’s one-man play about Wellington, which has been revived to coincide with the bicentenary of this 1815 Battle of Waterloo. On the closing Sunday there will be a mixed performance of acting and music bringing to life work by the playwright John Fletcher, who was born in Rye and collaborated with Shakespeare. And youngsters from the Rye Dance Centre will again perform at Rye College. This year we have seen the opening of The Kino in Rye and therefore cinema has been added to the programme for 2015. We will have local film director and artist Dave McKean narrating his The Gospel of Us, which is based on Christ’s passion but is set in Port Talbot. Derek Jarman’s producer James Mackay will show some of the director’s films shot in Super 8. And Charlie Cobb will introduce a special showing of Mr Turner – as he painted the paintings used in the film! Charlie is the Artist in Residence and will be in and around Rye during the whole Festival recording events and providing master classes as well as working from a pop-up studio. The ever-popular Winchelsea Cellar Tours and tour of the Romney Marsh churches are back, together with the returning Rye in World War II walk, plus Jo Kirkham’s guided Tudor and Medieval Rye walks. So if music, theatre, literature, cinema or informing and inspiring speakers float your boat, check out the 60-plus events between 11th and 28th September in Rye and make sure you don’t miss one of the best Arts Festivals in the UK! There is something for Everyone at Multi-Skills Workshop

F

or three years now the Multi-Skills Workshop (MSW) has been offering courses, tuition and workshop facilities to the general public in woodwork and metalwork bases activities. The workshop was the idea of retiring school teacher David Boniface, who after thirty years of teaching children workshop based courses wanted to offer adults the opportunity to learn and be creative in a well-equipped environment. Now, with over 250 students having taken advantage of the courses, tuition and facilities on offer, ‘Students’ from all walks of life and a very wide variety of ages have undertaken projects ranging from jewellery to large pieces of furniture (such as double beds and dining tables), and varying in complexity from elements of machinery to beautiful but very simple turned wooden bowls. It is evident that the workshop experience offered by David at the MSW is greatly appreciated by all those that sign up. A comment from Andrew Humm who has been attending the MSW for two years; “Being a complete novice, the Wednesday night Woodworking Beginner’s Class suited me perfectly. I was part of a small group engaged in a simple training course that familiarised us with basic tools and techniques, starting with creating a simple jigsaw, to a more involved box making project. From then on we were free to go wherever our ideas took us, the workshop is comprehensively equipped so the only limits are your own imagination. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere you can work at your own pace, with as much or as little help and advice as suits you. All solutions are explored, no matter how complex or outlandish a project maybe, with continued encouragement and enthusiasm from David, the Course Director.” If you are interested in finding out more visit the website, give David a call or go along to one of the open mornings.

NEW BEXHILL CLASS FOR SEPTEMBER! Stagecoach theatre School Hastings first opened in the year 2000 and for the past 15 years has gone from strength to strength offering high quality performing arts training to young people aged four to eighteen. In September a new Early Stages class for children aged four to six will open in Bexhill. Stagecoach strive to realize the potential of every child, stretching their imagination and fuelling their creativity through drama, dance and singing classes. During their time at Stagecoach, students grow in confidence and selfesteem. They develop lifelong skills, helping them to flourish at school, home and in social situations. For three hours each week , Main School students (6-18) are divided by age into small groups and work on various performance skills. Each term has a different focus. Our Early Stages (4-6) work for ninety -minutes each week over three thirty minute sessions of acting, singing and dancing. The classes help young children make friends, have fun and learn the key performance skills. All our teachers are experienced and of course, security checked. Lessons are structured and educational yet fun and dynamic and delivered in a safe, secure environment. At Stagecoach we believe that the experience of performing gives children a sense of belonging, wellbeing and confidence. So, as you can see although our teacher’s are highly skilled and know their subjects there’s so much more to Stagecoach than singing, dancing and acting! We believe in the power of imagination and creativity! Our small class sizes ensure every child receives the attention they deserve. Bexhill Roaring 20s A World Record Breaking Day

Saturday 18 July 2015 will certainly go down in Bexhill history. The town journeyed back in time to the 1920s with huge crowds not seen since the days of the Bexhill 100 Festival of Motoring. The world record of 319 for the largest Charleston dance was comprehensively smashed as 503 Charleston dancers put their heart and soul into 6 minutes of pure spectacle adjudicated by a representative from The Guiness Book of Records. Organiser Roger Crouch created the initial concept for this event, and he was joined this year by local businessman Alistair Hazel. Congratulations to everyone who took part, especially those who looked so glamorous in their vintage attire. See www.discoverbexhill.com/blog/bexhill-roaring-20s-2015

Claudette Leet Here at my Exhibition Space you will find a vision and creative thinking that makes you want to look and ask questions – and then look some more. Rhythms, tensions and polarities emerge reflecting emotions mostly in an abstract way, and sometimes even non-figuratively - but always completely spontaneously, intuitively and in an investigative manner, abstracted from my residual memory and imagination. It’s not Art for the faint-hearted but for the imagination of thinkers - the individualistic mind that is prepared to let go of institutional brainwashing and perimeter logic - it allows you to find yourself and be who you are.

Hampton Court 2015

Exclusive Pictures

Letting hope bloom at Hampton Court With all the razzmattaz of RHS Chelsea feeling long since gone, children’s charity World Vision worked on transferring the concept and essence of the Chelsea garden to RHS Hampton Court. The palace itself celebrates 500 years since Cardinal Wolsey broke earth here in 1515, and even the show celebrated a 25 year anniversary. All-in-all a special time to be exhibiting in these beautiful surroundings.

M

any people who visit the show will have already seen the garden in person or snippets of it on TV, radio or in the papers. The relaxed surroundings of Hampton Court’s Home Park allow the public to engage and contemplate the installation in a more informal setting. The garden is three times the size of RHS Chelsea, and the core concept of rice cultivation will remain at its heart. Again there is no direct replication of rice fields, rice cultivation, or even South East Asia. All of these elements have been sliced into a more abstract form for consumption at the show. Towering majestic palm trees still offer a sense of shelter, and the translucent rods have grown to over 3,500 pieces - taking a very patient hand to get them all in straight rows! Tall reeds offer marginal hedging, and in reality they provide construction material for building, and the basic element for reed-

based musical instruments. The rod terracing also reminds us of the epic earthworks undertaken by mankind to cultivate rice in some of the world’s most challenging landscapes. The rice fields have now largely been drained, and the fields are ready for harvest and/or replanting. The occasional pool of water reminds us of how irrigation expertise is fundamental in cropping success, and how World Vision helps to enhance the food security for families and communities throughout the world. World Vision are working to introduce modern irrigation techniques to make harvesting rice more profitable for farmers. It will help small scale farmers grow crops that they can sell and cook to ensure a healthy, nutritious diet for their children. More importantly the programme aims to reduce the need for parents to leave vulnerable

children for long periods while they scrape together enough money for food and ensure children can complete their education. Designer John Warland is a four-time RHS gold medalist and a long-time supporter of World Vision. John’s thought-provoking designs blend strong concepts with beautiful and innovative installations. Since 2008, John has created a succession of award-winning gardens with World Vision as well as client such as Badger Beer, Cater Allen Private Bank, Porsche and Tropicana, and has been awarded Gold, Silver Gilt and Silver Medals from the RHS in the process. “Cambodia is a country of breathtaking beauty, couple with heart-breaking poverty and food insecurity. This year’s gardens raise awareness that many Cambodian children still survive on a mere two bowls of rice a day.” John Warland

Garden Services

It’s not just tree care we are about. As a family-run business, we are keen to donate to charity - in December 2013 we donated £5 from every job we carried out to children’s charity, Remembering Rebecca. December 2014 saw Nick Danson grow a very unruly beard for the DecemBeard campaign, raising £210 for Bowel Cancer. And last month, we were proud to be one of the main sponsors of Lord Brett McLean’s Pier Walk Challenge, which each year raises money for some fantastic local charities. We feel very fortunate to be supported by many local clients and this is our way of giving something back. Call 01424 421804 or search Danson Tree Care on Facebook for more information.

Chatsworth and Royal Horticultural Society Partner for New Annual Flower Show Spectacular addition to the summer social season starts in 2017 The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Chatsworth House Enterprises Ltd are delighted to announce that, in June 2017, a new annual RHS Flower Show will take place on the beautiful 1,000-acre parkland of the Duke of Devonshire’s 300-year-old home in Derbyshire’s Peak District. Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, said: “We’re thrilled that in 2017 we will be hosting an RHS Flower Show in partnership with Chatsworth on its breathtaking grounds. The amazing estate with its gorgeous surroundings has a rich gardening heritage and we’re honoured and excited to soon be a part of it. “RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will join our current portfolio of shows at Cardiff, Malvern, Chelsea, Hampton Court Palace, Tatton Park and London. It will be an incredible new show – a stunning addition to the flower show calendar, bursting with fresh ideas that will delight visitors. It’s a fabulous opportunity for exhibitors and a great platform to showcase and sell their amazing plants to a new audience. “The show will be held on the banks of the River Derwent, providing some of the most magnificent views in the country amid the landscape of ‘Capability’ Brown,” said Sue. “The spectacular home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire will give the event a dramatic and beautiful natural backdrop.” The Duke of Devonshire commented: “After our wonderful experience at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Amanda and I could not be more thrilled that the RHS has selected Chatsworth for its new show. There is so much happening in the garden at Chatsworth and we very much hope the RHS Flower Show will encourage more garden lovers to come to see us.” In May, Chatsworth exhibited at an RHS Flower Show for the first time. ‘The Laurent-Perrier Chatsworth Garden’, designed by Dan Pearson, was awarded Gold and won RHS Best Show Garden 2015 at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden was a beautiful representation of a small – and less-trodden – part of Chatsworth Garden. Inspired by Chatsworth’s ornamental trout stream and Paxton’s rockery, the garden gave Dan an opportunity to demonstrate his passion for naturalism. RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will be an annual event. It will take place for the first time on 7 – 11 June 2017. For more information, visit: rhs.org.uk/chatsworth-show
