Home-Start East Sussex Becoming a family is the best feeling in the world but also challenges many parents - so much so, that they might need a little extra help. Home-Start believes that parents play the key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them achieve their full potential. We train and support volunteers to help struggling families. Volunteering - This is the story of why Jane, one of our volunteers joined our team. “I heard about the support that HomeStart provides and really wished I had known about them when my children were younger as I really needed help myself. I was a bit nervous but I made some good friends on the training course and the first family I was matched with were lovely, I would often take the two toddlers out to give the mum a break, play games at home or just talk through Mum’s worries. As a bonus the experience has helped me to get back in to work.”

Collars & Coats 2015 Stars Shine for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s Annual Collars & Coats Gala Ball “Incredible Performances from Bryan Ferry and Camilla Kerslake” This Years Theme - “Transformation” to celebrate Battersea’s ability to transform dog’s lives.
T
he visual spectacle that is Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s once again wowed the world last night with the return of the Collars & Coats Gala Ball at the iconic Battersea Evolution in London.
Celebrating its seventh successful year, the high-profile event is a highlight of the autumn social calendar, and is consistently regarded as one of the most unique and eagerly anticipated charity events. The annual charity extravaganza saw a host of UK and international stars take to the red carpet for this worthwhile cause to raise vital funds for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s work in rescuing and re-homing abandoned dogs. What’s On Magazine went along to join this year’s star lineup, from the world of TV, music, film, sport and fashion, which

A practice built on expertise and modern facilities
ounded in 2015 by Cobie Loubser, the foundations of the practice are built on Cobie’s expertise and those of his highly reputed team. Cobie himself has been practicing for over 20 years within the Eastbourne area. In 2015 he decided to create the only single vet practice in the area, bringing with him a team of specialists for any referrals, all well-renowned in their fields. To this end, we are able to treat the vast majority of conditions onsite. It was his love of animals and comfort in their companionship which led Cobie to go into veterinary medicine, and what drives him to this day. The surgery was set up with the aim of providing exceptional facilities under one roof in the heart of Eastbourne, along with the care and compassion of a team who simply love animals. We’ve invested heavily in technology to enable us to offer the very best in equipment and medicine. So whether it’s a general health check or
031_December031.indd 1
something more serious, we are able to offer the best service and see them back on the road to full health. Your pet is like one of the family to you, so when they get sick you’ll want them to be in the hands of someone who cares about them as much as you do. At Cobie VetCare, Eastbourne, Sussex we understand the bond between a pet and its owner and will take every step to look after their wellbeing, as though they were our own. As the only single vet practice in the area, when you visit us, you can rest assured that you will see the same vet who will get to know and understand your animal. Your pet will be made to feel comfortable and come to trust Cobie, meaning they’ll never fear a trip to the vet. Cobie is accompanied by a team of experts, each specialising in a separate area of animal medicine, to whom your pet can be referred.

The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare was established in 1975. A cornerstone of the Trust’s founding policy then, as now, was to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. Our Animal Rescue Centre in Hadlow Down, nr Uckfield in East Sussex, provides a base for the animal rescue and re-homing work. Over the years, the Rescue Centre has also become a permanent home to many animals that it is not possible or desirable to re-home. Funds are raised with the generous support of individual donations, legacies, local fund raising, animal sponsors and our charity shops in Uckfield, Hailsham, Eastbourne and Heathfield. We receive no Local Authority, Government or Lottery funding. Please look out for our Christmas Food Appeal boxes, where any donation left for the animals in our care is much appreciated.

Sat. 12th Dec. Christmas in Rye
Christmas in Rye this year is set to be a Dickensian themed celebration From dawn till dusk, with lots of great activities for both young and old it really is going to be a community event full of joy and good spirit!
A quick visit for lunch to Callenders of Hailsham yesterday led to us booking in for our family Christmas get together. The menu of all traditional festive local produce is amazing. As we sat under the fabulous stained glass window and just relaxed, it was the polite and friendly service that convinced us that this was the place for us. Our neighbours had their wedding anniversary do here and everything was wonderful. Menus start from under ten pounds for two courses and all wines and beers are sensibly priced too. Top quality, award winning modern British food and service, we can’t wait to go back. I think I shall have Prawns to start, followed by a Fillet Steak Beef Wellington, with a glass of Rioja, and the Dark Chocolate Mousse to finish. I really can’t wait. Check out all their menus on the web and give them a call. You really should book your table today.

Westffiifie ld Village K
nown as Westewelle in the Domesday survey, Westfield, East Sussex is one of the largest villages in the area with a population of around 2,750. The village lies five miles (8 km) north of Hastings. A prominent sight when entering the village from the south is the church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Its many features include extensive buttressing, a 12th-century porch and a 14th-century font with an elaborate 17th-century cover. Above the door to the tower there is carved a Royal Coat of Arms with the list of vicars since 1250 set below. Looking towards the
nave there is a Norman arch with squint windows to the side, cut through the 32 inches of stone. Another feature at the road entrance is the lychgate, with its four carved angels; this was added in 1887. The history of Westfield has been extensively researched by a resident of Westfield descended from a family who appear in the records from 1552. On November 5th 1908, Westfield’s last windmill was burnt down. As it was the evening of the village Bonfire Societies torch light procession, naturally the Bonfire Boys fell under suspicion. However , nothing was ever proved and so the culprits were never found.
Visit Westfield village for an spectacular display of Christmas lights throughout December. The residents of Westfield will be, once again decorating their houses this year to raise money for the St Michaels Hospice. This display is incredible and great for all the family. Keep an eye on St Michael’s Facebook page for information such about the big switch on, nearer the time. Last year Westfield residents raised an amazing £8,400 and are hoping to beat that total this year.

S
ince 1926, driving down Route 66 has been the experience of a lifetime for travellers, adventurers, and dreamers. It’s a route so legendary that celebrated author John Steinbeck named it The Mother Road in his novel The Grapes of Wrath. The highway that once served as a main thoroughfare from east to west still beckons travellers seeking a classic piece of Americana. The historic Route 66 runs from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California and crosses the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Spanning a distance of more than 2,000 miles, Route 66 passes through a cross section of the USA that lets you see the country’s heart and soul. Traverse the urban streets of Chicago and St. Louis, take in the expansive Grand Canyon, experience the Southwest’s Native American communities, and hit the beach in Santa Monica without leaving the route. This well-worn, fabled road has a history worth noting. In the mid1940s, Route 66 wound through small towns across the Midwest and Southwest. It was often called the “Main Street of America” with its mom-andpop shops, cafes, motels and gas stations. In the late 1950s, the old Route 66 was bypassed as high-speed interstate highways were built. In 1984, it was decommissioned and the old route, now designated as Historic Route 66, still maintains its original charisma. Roadside attractions include a treasure trove of 1950s nostalgia from general stores to diners to quirky motels equipped with neon signs—all capturing the glory days like a weathered Polaroid snapshot. Landmarks include the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, Illinois, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri and the Mojave National Preserve in Nipton, California. On the novelty side,
you can see the “World’s Largest Concrete Totem Pole” near Foyil, Oklahoma and the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The Ariston Café is a member of the Route 66 Hall of Fame and a popular stop for food in Litchfield, Illinois. Once you reach the California coast, the Santa Monica Pier marks the original end of the route. However, travelling to Los Angeles and Sunset Boulevard through the oldest part of the city, the Spanish colonial Olvera Street is a particularly wonderful add-on and can be incorporated into your tailor-made itinerary by Southern Cross Travel.
This Route 66 road trip is just an example of the bespoke self-drive USA holidays that THE Tailor-made Specialists at Southern Cross Travel can create for you. Our travel experts use their world-wide knowledge and over 35 years’ experience to tailor-make an itinerary to suit you as an individual! Junior’s Day Nursery first opened its doors in December 2008. For the owner Denise Fuller, the story started with the search for childcare for her own daughter. Not having consciously thought of, nor seriously considered the matter of childcare before, Denise and her husband Graham were surprised at how strongly they felt about the care that should be offered to children and their parents, and how hard it was to find a nursery that met their requirements. Junior’s is a family run nursery with an experienced management team and was awarded ‘Outstanding in All Areas’ by Ofsted in Oct 2014. “Our ethos is simple; to be the Nursery of choice for the area” Junior’s prides itself on its large, purpose built facilities with a variety of outdoor areas, including sensory garden, large sand kitchen, tyre bank and grass and decking areas. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by orchards which we utilise frequently for our Forest School activities. Junior’s follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and central to our practice is the Key Person Approach, which ensures your child has consistent care which enhances their learning and development. Junior’s have recently opened a second Nursery in Tonbridge, opposite the train station.

Earthed in fletching, was designed to be a place to come home to. The monthly therapy groups offer nonjudgemental time for discussions and self-discovery. The regular creative groups offer a lighter approach to gain confidence and make friends. For more information; see the advert above or call – I love to hear a new voice.

There is something for Everyone at Multi-Skills Workshop
F
or three years now the Multi-Skills Workshop (MSW) has been offering courses, tuition and workshop facilities to the general public in woodwork and metalwork bases activities. The workshop was the idea of retiring school teacher David Boniface, who after thirty years of teaching children workshop based courses wanted to offer adults the opportunity to learn and be creative in a well-equipped environment. Now, with over 250 students having taken advantage of the courses, tuition and facilities on offer, ‘Students’ from all walks of life and a very wide variety of ages have undertaken projects ranging from jewellery to large pieces of furniture (such as double beds and dining tables), and varying in complexity from elements of machinery to beautiful but very simple turned wooden bowls. It is evident that the workshop experience offered by David at the MSW is greatly appreciated by all those that sign up. A comment from Andrew Humm who has been attending the MSW for two years; “Being a complete novice, the Wednesday night Woodworking Beginner’s Class suited me perfectly. I was part of a small group engaged in a simple training course that familiarised us with basic tools and techniques, starting with creating a simple jigsaw, to a more involved box making project. From then on we were free to go wherever our ideas took us, the workshop is comprehensively equipped so the only limits are your own imagination. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere you can work at your own pace, with as much or as little help and advice as suits you. All solutions are explored, no matter how complex or outlandish a project maybe, with continued encouragement and enthusiasm from David, the Course Director.” If you are interested in finding out more visit the website, give David a call or go along to one of the open mornings.

Wild Bird Care
Birds of a quiver..
Two questions I am often asked...
No1 - “How have you managed to keep your stunning good looks? and No2 - “How can we help our birds survive through freezing weather?” The answer to No1 is plastic surgery, a lazy life and lying about my age. No 2....We should remember that birds are really built for cold weather, lots of layers of feathers to help keep out the cold. In fact some of our winter garden visitors actually come from much colder climates than ours. Where they do suffer is finding enough food they need to build up their fat reserves, some of our smaller birds, like Tits, Wrens and Goldcrests, need to eat as much as 30% of their weight each day just to
Sat. 26th Dec. - Boxing Day Tea Dance
survive the nights. Garden feeders can mean the difference between life and death if natural food is not available so it is vital to keep our feeders clean and full. In very bad winters as many as 50% of our tiny birds perish so please spare a thought and a little time to create a feeding area where your birds can get easy access to a life saving nosh-up. Instead of chocolates, a pair of socks or soap on a rope why not buy your loved one a small feeder and seed as a stocking filler, easily done for under £10. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful 2016. Allan.......... Feathers Wild Bird Care www.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk shop.featherswildbirdcare.co.uk
