The Association of Carers free respite and befriending service gives unpaid carers the opportunity to take a weekly three hour break from their caring role, while a carefully selected and thoroughly vetted volunteer spends time with the person they look after. Barbara has been caring for her husband Cliff since he had a stroke 27 years ago. Sadly the stroke left Cliff unable to speak but he is able to walk with the aid of a stick and has a great sense of humour. Volunteer Paul visits the couple each week and goes out with Cliff while Barbara has some time to herself. Paul said: “I love my role as a respite and befriending volunteer. I feel rewarded by seeing how much Barbara appreciates her break and Cliff and I have a great time together, we go to the garden centre for a browse and enjoy a cup of tea.”

Mon. 15th Feb. - Stop Motion Animation Project
The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.
At the Trinity Theatre, T. Wells. 10am - 4pm | 7yrs+. Back by popular demand, our 3 day course will teach you the basics of storytelling, making and stop motion animation as well as creating a few short animated films of your own. Hastings Apprenticeship & Jobs Fair ‘Unemployment is falling year-on-year in Hastings and Rye, but it can still go further. For the past five years I have organised an annual fair to put people looking for work in contact with local businesses who have vacancies to fill. This year, it will be held at Sussex Coast College, Hastings, on Friday 26 February 2016 between 10am and 3pm and it will be the best yet. For 2016, I have recognised the growing demand for apprenticeships and this year’s fair will encourage a greater awareness of the fantastic local apprenticeship opportunities. Our area has many growing businesses which are looking for staff. However, for many who are unemployed, it often remains challenging to find the right opportunities. This is where the Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair can help. The Fair will enable jobseekers to attend seminars providing employment and training advice, identify local vacancies which meet their talents and ambitions, and make contact with the businesses and employers who can offer a bright future in employment. I look forward to seeing you there’..

“Saying the internet has replaced travel agents is like saying scissors have replaced barbers!”
O
ver the last few years at Southern Cross Travel we have seen a huge increase in the number of people returning to travel agents for booking their holidays. Of course, our regular customers have continued booking their holidays with our travel experts despite the internet (and we thank you for that!) but an increasing amount of new customers walk into our Rye and Wadhurst offices saying they are fed up with wasting hours online and want to put their holiday in the safe hands of a travel agent. Here, our tailor-made travel consultant, Anneka Bones, shares her top 5 reasons for booking your holiday with a travel agent in 2016:
there and will generally prevent you from making mistakes that might ruin your trip. Travel Agents know that they are staking their reputation and any future business on the recommendations they make to you and they take that very seriously.
3. Your money is much safer when you book through a Travel Agent.
The vast majority of Travel Agents around the world have bonding in place to ensure that should they or their suppliers go into liquidation, the services that you have paid them for will still be honoured, or if for any reason they cannot be, you will receive a full refund of all monies paid. You should always ask your Agent what arrangements are in place for your financial protection should the worst occur. Southern Cross Travel are members of the Travel Trust Association so your money is 100% financially protected. If you make your own independent arrangements, you will generally have no protection whatsoever should one or all of your suppliers fail.
1. We do all the work for you.
Even a straight forward trip is likely to involve at least two or three suppliers, which means that the process of pulling all the pieces together can be extremely complex and time consuming. Added to which you may never know if you have made the best choices from those available. At Southern Cross Travel, we know the best suppliers for your particular requirements and will be able to assemble your itinerary far more quickly than you would be able to yourself, saving you precious time!
2. We give you more for your money.
When you work with a good Travel Agent not only will they often be able to match online prices, but they may be able to offer you added value. This might take the form of a bottle of wine in your room, free breakfast, free room upgrades or special events and activities. Travel suppliers tend to look for ways to give special treatment to people who have booked through a Travel Agency because they know that the best way to get an Agent to recommend their product to others is to have one of their customers return from their trip fully satisfied.
023_February023.indd 1
4. When you book on the Internet there is no real way to know exactly what you are getting.
Descriptions are purposely vague. Photos can be distorted or carefully chosen to omit undesirable elements. User reviews are unreliable as many are obvious fakes and even the ones that are not need to be taken with a pinch of salt as they may only reflect an isolated occurrence, or the opinion of one person who may or may not be qualified to make a considered judgement. Travel Agents will have been to the places they are recommending to you and will have established trusting relationships with these suppliers. We will not only help you choose the destination that best matches your requirements, but will advise you where to stay based on your preferences, what to pack depending on the time of year you are travelling, what to do while you are
5. We are there for you if something goes wrong.
When something changes or goes wrong with a trip you’ve booked yourself you are forced to enter the dreaded abyss that is phone or even worse, online support. Travel Agents do not have to go down this route. They will have an account representative that answers to them when the best laid plans go awry. This means that you can go back to enjoying your trip, because once you’ve called, emailed, or text messaged your agent, you can rest assured that you have passed your problem to the person who is best placed to resolve it for you. You wouldn’t cut your own hair, fix your own car or re-wire your own house, so why book your own holidays?! Let our travel experts take the stress away and arrange your dream holiday. Wherever you wish to travel to in 2016, Southern Cross Travel will tailor-make your dream itinerary to suit your exact requirements. Contact us today to discuss your next holiday in our Wadhurst or Rye office – call 01892 783896 (Wadhurst) or 01797 229200 (Rye) or email holidays@southerncrosstravel.co.uk. Animal & Pet Services
The Kit Wilson Trust for Animal Welfare was established in 1975. A cornerstone of the Trust’s founding policy then, as now, was to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. Our Animal Rescue Centre in Hadlow Down, nr Uckfield in East Sussex, provides a base for the animal rescue and re-homing work. Over the years, the Rescue Centre has also become a permanent home to many animals that it is not possible or desirable to re-home. Funds are raised with the generous support of individual donations, legacies, local fund raising, animal sponsors and our charity shops in Uckfield, Hailsham, Eastbourne and Heathfield. We receive no Local Authority, Government or Lottery funding. - 26 -

Lulu
Before Adele and Amy, there was Lulu. Now she’s back. Britain’s first great female rock and soul voice has made the album of her career and will be touring this Spring!
M
aking Life Rhyme is the first album which Lulu has written for herself, a deep, rich, emotional, autobiographical stew of musical flavours, harking back to the raw groove of her classic 1965 debut smash ‘Shout’ and fast forwarding to the most soulful pop music of today. Lulu has been in the music business for 51 years. Yet she seems utterly undimmed by time, slim, vivacious and energetic, with an appealing combination of bright eyed sprightliness and a very adult, no-nonsense directness. “I was thrown into this business in my childhood. It’s a minefield, you see so many people harmed by believing in their success. You think you’re invincible, then crash, it all comes down. I’ve managed to look like I’m holding it together but it ain’t been easy. This is what I’m talking about, everything that I’ve been through in my life. It’s really about going beyond the problems everyone’s got. I’ve been there, done it, but now I’m living in the solution. That’s what it’s about!” Making Life Rhyme is Lulu’s first album in ten years. Its roots lie
in an invitation to perform a blues set with vintage American session players at BB King’s Bar & Grill in New York in February, 2013. A glowing New York Times review hailed “the power and the passion” of her voice. It was a reminder to Lulu of what music meant to her. “I really like pop music but if I could describe my own voice it would seem like rock with a little blues feel. I started going that kind of bluesy way, going back to my roots.” For the original sessions, Lulu began recording blues covers with a small band of hand-picked musicians, overseen by her musical director and the album’s co-producer, Richard Cardwell. “It was just great musicians in a tiny little studio. It was like starting again.” Lulu was inspired to bring a couple of her own songs into the sessions and “it took on a life of its own.” Decca Records liked Lulu’s new material so much, they encouraged her to keep writing. “Everything they heard they just loved. I’ve never had this before. Decca empowered me.” The singer has dabbled in song writing over the years and, indeed, Tina Turner enjoyed a major global hit in 1993 with Lulu’s song I Don’t Wanna Fight.

Her (18-months younger) brother Billy Lawrie has always been her closest collaborator and came on board as the album’s other co-producer.
What’s On Magazine spoke exclusively to Lulu about her new album and UK tour. What made you decide to write this new album? It really started with my band, we had been playing a lot of Blues Clubs, both in the UK and in New York and the music was leaning more towards Blues songs, so it was suggested to me that I should make a Blues album. We made a few demos and my brother and I threw in another couple of songs that we had written and when my manager went to the record company they said they preferred the new stuff so that was really exciting. We didn’t have much of a budget or much time but it was a great opportunity. Its a modern sound but its roots are in Soul, R&B and Motown. I was brought up with Otis Redding, Ray Charles and that whole era of music but I think we have made this album as sonically modern as we could. I don’t know why it’s taken so long, I should have done this years ago, but I was in no hurry to make another record, it had to be something special. But life is what life is, and now to write an album about how I see my life, it feels like it fits so well. I love every single thing on this album, every single thing! It was so exciting. Richard (my producer) would be mixing something, driving us mad playing it over and over a thousand times, and a counter melody would come, and we’d have to put that on too. New songs were practically being written over the top of songs. I didn’t want to stop. The music developed from Sixties and Seventies styles with the sonic clarity of contemporary pop. I definitely didn’t want to sound like a throwback. Because I only listen to modern music, really. My influences are from way back but the ones I like today are influenced by the same people. And their recording technique is fabulous. The crispness of the hand claps! I love it. The young musicians I’m working with have got so much to give. Young and old together is good, experience and enthusiasm, it’s fabulous. When the album was released last year I got the best reviews that I had ever had so we really had to create a tour off of the back of this. I have toured many times with other people such as Chaka Khan and Anastasia but never on my own for at least 10 years so it was a bit nerve wracking. I don’t believe in going on tour and just playing the new album, because your audience will want some of the stuff from the past. The tour won’t be about the outfits or the set it will be about the music, and the musicians. Since I started the tour I have had the greatest time and the audiences have been on their feet every night. The promoters have asked me to extend the tour for another three and a half weeks which I am very grateful for, especially at this point in my life. I am not reinventing the wheel I am just doing what I do best. I am lucky and I am disciplined enough to be able to do what I feel I was meant to do with my life. If people are enjoying it then that is what it is all about.
you love to do. Lulu was born into the tough world of Glasgow’s working class tenements in 1948. She was raised plain Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie. She has been such a fixture of the British entertainment landscape for so long now, she is not particularly defined by her musicality. She has sung at the Eurovision, hosted a Saturday night light entertainment TV show, acted in films, theatre and television and sold her own brand make up. “In the beginning it was never about being famous. I wanted to sing, whether I got paid for it or not. Then all of a sudden I had a hit record. Bam! Boom! You don’t know what’s happening, it’s euphoric and terrifying at the same time, and you kind of get caught up in it.” She has been twice married (the first time, aged 19, to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees) and twice divorced, enjoyed an infamous encounter with Jimi Hendrix in the Sixties and secret romantic liaison with David Bowie in the Seventies. “I’ve been through a lot in my life, a lot of struggles. I’ve been one of the luckiest people but I’ve also been thrown from pillar to post, emotionally.” It is probably fair to say she hasn’t always made the music she wanted to make. But along the way there have been such stone classics as 1967 number one To Sir With Love, 1969 soul stormer Oh Me Oh My (I’m A Fool For You Baby), 1974 Bond theme The Man With The Golden Glove, Bowie collaboration The Man Who Sold The World and even her 1993 smash with Take That on Relight My Fire. Her new album stands head and shoulders with Lulu’s very best and most loved work. How do you view your life now? I am the most relaxed and the most chilled that I have ever been. My childhood was volatile and violent and I had a lot of shame about that and would never talk about it while my parent
Is touring as hard and uncomfortable as ever? It is hard work and you try to make it as comfortable as you can, but the bottom line is that it is a job and you have to schlep all over the place. The weather is not all that great and you don’t have much time in that venue, but once you get on stage it is great fun. I really love it and that is why I do it every day. Fame is almost an interference because it can get in the way of what - 30 -

were alive. I was diagnosed as having post traumatic stress syndrome because I was permanently anxious due to living in what was basically a war zone between my parents as a child. I became famous at 15 which made me the breadwinner and consequently responsible for other peoples wages. I always try to be perfect because if I wasn’t then it would all fall apart and then there would be no money so you can imagine how stressful that could be. I held it together and was lucky enough to have success. By the time my second marriage fell apart I was in a bad way and that’s when I started writing songs with my brother’s encouragement. The first song we wrote together was a huge hit for Tina Turner called ‘I don’t Want To Fight’. She said to me ‘This is about my life but actually it was about mine’. I have done a lot of work on myself looking at philosophy. I have read every self help book and tried to help myself understand why things happen to me, and what I would do differently if I had the chance again. I now have a really great support team and have a very spiritual programme in my life. I get down on my knees in the morning and pray to god to do god’s will, not mine, and I get down on my knees at night and I say ‘Thank you’ because I am more living in the present than looking for what I haven’t got. I have got two grandchildren now which is a real blessing and I have a lot of family support. I also have a skin care business so I keep myself very busy. I will be joined on tour by the Military Wives Choir and we will be making a record together which will raise funds for the military charity. I can totally relate to living your life feeling worried and anxious about everything. It colours how you look at everything and deal with everything. It is a difficult place to live and I don’t feel that I am in that place anymore. How does it work, writing with your brother? Billy has always been a writer. I push him, and he pushes me. We love melody and we know each other so well, he’ll know what I’m thinking before I say it. We always work together on a song, he may have an idea and then we will either go with that or change direction slightly depending on how I feel it is progressing. The track on the new album called ‘Cry’ was about a man trying to have a relationship with his father and not being able to show his emotion. Men have been told all their lives that big boys don’t cry which is really hard. When I finished the track I thought, this is really about me too, and its about being vulnerable, and how hard that is.
What is your opinion on Eurovision? I think it has lost its creditability. I think it is looked at as a laughing stock. People have parties and fun with it but serious musicians don’t want to get involved with that. What singers inspire you? I am a ‘Believer’ (fan of Justin Bieber). Sonically he is so just beautiful. He has got three top singles in America at the moment and his new album is just fabulous. The song that Ed Shearan wrote with him is just amazing. He has tripped up a few times and been a naughty boy, but I can totally relate to that as he is so young and finding it hard to find his way. It’s a hard and lonely existence at that age so god bless him for coming through. I am mad for Pharrell, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Emile Sande, Beyonce, Sigma and Labrinth as artists bringing retro soul up to date and my favourite song at the moment is ‘Running’ by Beyonce. I also love Rhianna and Adele. I saw Bruno Mars last year and he is like a Motown artist, insanely brilliant and of course Lady Gaga is also fabulous. What’s Coming up for you in 2016? I am will be travelling to Australia and I have the new Ad Fab movie coming out later in the year so it’s all very exciting.

What made you decide on Making Life Rhyme as the title of the album? I felt that particular track from the album reflected my feeling the most. My life isn’t jagged anymore, it doesn’t run in fits and starts. I have helped myself with the anxiety and I have got people that I trust around me. I am much more open with my family and we can talk and listen to each other. That song is about how I am making my life rhyme, it’s not out of step and neither am I. I am much more chilled and I have still got a lot of energy, I am really lucky. You have worked on American Idol in the past helping young singers develop their talent, is that something you would like to do? Yes, it is something I really love to do, but I am very wary about giving advice because I know when I was a youngster, I would not necessarily listen to someone giving me advice. Young people have so much to give, and older people like me have a lot of experience that they can offer. - 32 -

Rye Bay Scallop Week Sat 20th – Sun 28th Feb 2016
It’s shucking time again!
Rye Bay scallops are served in many restaurants in the area throughout the Scallop season.
The 14th Rye Bay Scallop Week is scheduled for Saturday 20th – Sunday 28th February 2016. Rye Bay Scallop Week in Rye, East Sussex offers the perfect opportunity to indulge in seafood delights! Our restaurants will be showcasing an array of different scallop dishes. There will also be Scallop events including tasting events, cookery schools and demonstrations, live music and more!
Scallop History Scallop fossils have been found dating back over three million years and the shell is used symbolically in many ways. It can often be found in heraldry including Princess Diana’s coat of arms, the Spencer family crest and more recently on Prince William’s Knight of the Garter crest. The shell shape has long been considered a sign of pilgrimage too, particularly of travellers to the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela in Spain. There is a small Wesleyan chapel in the town of Winchelsea, just a mile or so from Rye, overlooking Rye Bay. John Wesley, renowned Methodist preacher, used this little chapel, built in 1785, and conducted his last open air service in the town of Winchelsea in 1790. Is it a coincidence that the Methodists adopted the scallop shell, taken from John Wesley’s coat of arms, as their symbol?

Cloudy Bay Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Cloudy Bay, the pioneering winery in Marlborough, New Zealand explores the notion of escape in its fourth RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden created by young, talented landscape designer Sam Ovens. The garden without borders is inspired by Cloudy Bay’s 30-year heritage using nature as a source of its winemaking inspiration. The primary material is western red cedar timber (a natural material that exudes quality), which is used in the construction of a deck, boardwalks and cabin, a waterside retreat. A large reflective pool adds a sensory element to the design with connotations of setting sail and drifting away, or even escaping. The cabin and boardwalk elements have a pontoon-like quality. The architectural structure of Cloudy Bay signature wines, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are alluded to throughout the garden’s structure and planting. The Marlborough terroir with its microclimates and diverse soil types that deliver the intricacies of flavour and aroma are represented through the planting palette which is made up primarily of heathers, pines and grasses. This bold and simple selection evokes peaceful memories and transports people to another place. There are no boundaries to the garden increasing a sense of freedom when enjoying it from within.
Phoenix Gardening offers a friendly, reliable, all year round gardening service. A member of the Gardeners Guild, Neil is professionally trained to RHS Level 3 and is a registered waste licence holder. Experienced with extensive plant knowledge, is happy to offer a free, no obligation quotation upon request with competitive hourly or per job rates. As well as gardening in all weathers, Neil can do small handyman jobs. Based in the Hastings area, Neil is happy to travel to areas such as Bexhill, Eastbourne, Tenterden, Sandhurst, Battle, Sedlescombe, Fairlight and Rodmell. Call Neil on 07958 408 667 or 01424 434724.
Commenting on his design, Sam Ovens, Landscape designer says, “People love to escape to their gardens. They realign themselves with nature, unearth themselves from a state of mind there. The Cloudy Bay Garden explores a freedom that has no bounds, providing a sense of escape that can take us anywhere. I’ve really enjoyed working with the affinities between gardening and winemaking, and exploring a process which starts in the wild with the earth, and is guided by nature. Similar to the winemaker at Cloudy Bay, my main source of inspiration is the environment, both the natural one and the man made.” Maria Ines Pina, Senior Brand Manager at Cloudy Bay adds, “Sam has perfectly captured the essence of Cloudy Bay in this design. Our mission is to share the simple luxuries in life, such as savouring a quality wine drinking experience, which has been inspired by the terroir. For 30 years we have been producing premium, complex wines with intense flavour and we see ourselves as the curators of ‘natural luxury.’ This garden is a perfect representation of natural luxury, with Sam’s clean lines, serene water and planting providing a place to escape with a glass of wine in hand.” The Cloudy Bay Garden will be on show at the 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show from 24 – 28 May 2016. www.cloudybay.co.nz

A
DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR ‘U’
round a quarter of adults in the UK are considered obese, a figure which is set to rise above 50% by 2050. Obesity is commonly associated with raised blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and poor glucose control, which can lead to the development of a number of complex health problems including diabetes and heart disease. Our top tips could help you to make 2016 different and see you making those all-important small but meaningful changes that stick and form habits for the rest of the year and beyond. Are you ready to embrace change? Choose a resolution that really matters to you. Perhaps you want to lose some weight, wish you did more exercise, want to finally stub out your smoking habit or enjoy a better work-life balance. Whatever you choose to change, do it for you. Keep the cost down - making changes doesn’t have to be expensive. If it’s too costly it could be another reason to give up and make you feel worse if you do. There are plenty of ways to keep active and eat healthily without forking out for a pricey gym membership or gimmicky diet plans. Be specific - Create rules for your resolution so you’re clear whether you’re sticking to it or not. Instead of saying you’ll exercising more, say you will ‘go to Zumba every Monday’ or whatever else you enjoy. Keep a track of your progress – realising how far you’ve come is a great incentive to keep going. Set smaller goals to start with but keep pushing yourself to do a little bit more once you’re there. Keeping a diary or photographs can be a great way to do this. Small changes matter - Don’t take on too much; be realistic and choose something that you can stick to, as biting off more than you can chew could set you up to fail. However …. Failing is part of the journey - Don’t be too tough on yourself when you have a little slip. Changing our habits is hard and it’s natural to revert back to old ways. Pick yourself up and try again, celebrate the little victories and update your goals to keep your motivation strong. Don’t go it alone – Try to buddy up with others who are looking to achieve similar outcomes but just be careful not to let quitters ruin your good intentions if they drop out.
Why write a will?
If you have not written a will
The Government will decide, through the courts, who should benefit from your life time’s work, who should inherit and who should bring up your children.
If you have written a will
You decide who you want to handle your affairs these are known as Executors and Trustees If you have children you decide on whom you want to bring up your children and you can leave instructions on Education and Religious upbringing. always like to start the new year off with a bang. What can be better than to get a new species at the shop.
The beautiful Firecrest made a brief appearance in the car park, it seems a little sad that a mature pensioner (tho’ young at heart and still strikingly handsome) can suddenly change into a quivering, excited, big kid, it had been over a year since we last added a new species. Amazingly our total now is up to 94. The Firecrest and it’s close cousin the Goldcrest are Europe’s smallest birds, weighing just 5 - 7 g. about the same weight as a 20p.
Kingfisher at Dungeness RSPB reserve.
As you can see by my photos they can be hard to distinguish, compared to the Goldcrest, the Firecrest is brighter and ‘cleaner’ looking, with a green back, white belly, bronze ‘collar’ and a black and white eye-stripe.
