Phoenix choir’s Mozart concert on February 6 features two choral works from his youth in Salzburg. The Te Deum was composed when Mozart was 13, while the Mass in C minor was written to celebrate his marriage - his wife, Constanze, sang the soprano solos in the first performance. Containing some of his most beautiful vocal writing, it is a poignant work filled with mature reflections on love and life and a deep, though ambiguous, spirituality. Phoenix, conducted by Michael Fields, is joined by a professional orchestra and soloists including local soprano Ansy Boothroyd and internationally renowned baritone, Stephen Varcoe.

Home-Start East Sussex Becoming a family is the best feeling in the world but also challenges many parents - so much so, that they might need a little extra help. Home-Start believes that parents play the key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them achieve their full potential. We train and support volunteers to help struggling families. Volunteering - This is the story of why Jane, one of our volunteers joined our team. “I heard about the support that HomeStart provides and really wished I had known about them when my children were younger as I really needed help myself. I was a bit nervous but I made some good friends on the training course and the first family I was matched with were lovely, I would often take the two toddlers out to give the mum a break, play games at home or just talk through Mum’s worries. As a bonus the experience has helped me to get back in to work.”

Health, Beauty & Fitness Have a fruity New Year Many of us find it harder to reach the 5-a-day target during the winter months as fruits and vegetables tend to slip off the menu to make way for more indulgent treats as we enjoy the festivities. Rich in fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and naturally low in salt and calories, fruits and vegetables are key ingredients to keep your heart healthy this winter. Enjoy the seasonal cheer this winter without compromising on your healthy intentions. Follow Heart Research UK’s Healthy Tip to make fruits a strong feature in your food portfolio:
Fun and fruity buffet ideas: - Offer a mulled fruit punch as an alcohol-free alternative if you’re hosting a party. Just as warming and satisfying, blend your favourite fruit juices and serve hot or cold with all the usual spices. - Dried fruits and nuts make ideal party nibbles. On top of that, nuts are a great source of unsaturated fats which help to lower cholesterol. - Treat your guests to a Mediterranean-style platter for an up-to-date take on the classic melon and ham starter. Serve classic low-fat cheeses and lean cold meats with fruity accompaniments like grapes, figs and stewed spiced cranberries as a quick and easy chutney. The Body Junction is now fully established in Bexhill and known for the excellent Pilates classes on offer and the amazing team of Physiotherapists. See the website for full timetable of classes and dates. The Body Junction runs Tai Chi classes for Arthritis, taken by Rebecca Lunn, she sees a lot of people with Arthritis and mobility problems and also people at risk of falls due to poor balance. These classes are run on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. You can also purchase Gift Vouchers which can be bought from our website. Call for new induction dates. Ideal for trying Pilates or if you may be considering joining a class . New Class Thursdays at 4pm starting in January.
- For a festive fruit platter arrange melon, green grapes or kiwi and decorate with berries and a pineapple star for a bejewelled centre piece. If you’re feeling very creative why not up the “wow-factor” with a 3D structure. - Strawberries filled with cream or crème fraiche will make sweet little strawberry Santas that the children will love.
Fruit-perfect puds:
- Poach some juicy pears in spicy mulled wine with some cinnamon and vanilla. You can make these up to two days ahead and serve chilled or warm with some of the cooled syrup. - Make a winter fruit salad using dried fruits such as dates, figs, cranberries and apricots. Cook them with a little water, some honey and vanilla, leave to cool and serve with natural Greek yogurt or with porridge for a tasty and satisfying breakfast. - If your favourite dessert includes cake, cheesecake or even a sweet pie, cut a small slice and add a nutrient-rich topping of cranberries, blueberries, redcurrants or clementine segments so you can have your cake and eat it. Don’t let your fruit intake fall this season, and be inspired by these festive 5-a-day tips for a nutritious boost to keep your heart happy and healthy this winter.
NinaYoga’s classes work on a holistic level, whether it be destressing, strength-building, increasing flexibility or addressing a particular physiological problem, your journey begins here. Weekly yoga classes take place in St Leonards and Hastings on the East Sussex Coast, however Nina is happy to travel to Battle, Robertsbridge, Rye and all other local areas. Do not underestimate the power of being balanced, centred, co-ordinated, strong, light, without pain, more sensitive, more reflective, more relaxed, more open and receptive..... of being still.

Ubiquitous Health offer a wide range of services: Occupational Health: Offering a range of services to suit your individual needs. Health Promotion: Prevention is the best medicine. Diagnosing diseases in their early stages usually means a much better prognosis. Health Surveillance: Health surveillance is a system of ongoing health checks to monitor the health of those people who have been identified as ‘being at risk’.
Preparation for the Big Futures Show on 20 April 2016 at the Winter Garden in Eastbourne is well under way. The Big Futures Show will offer a mix of education, training and employment exhibitors and interactive displays. The design of the show and all the Winter Garden’s facilities will ensure that students meet exhibitors in a professional exhibition environment. Businesses, colleges and training providers, both local and national, have already shown a great deal of interest so that allocated space is now turning into firm bookings. Businesses will find it easier to support one high quality regional event rather than being asked to support many small events by individual schools. Surely it wont be too long before we have a full house. With a catchment across southern East Sussex the Big Futures Show, aimed at 14 to 16 year old students and others considering their future, will reach many thousands of potential visitors. Schools are receiving their invites now and those wishing to bring groups are advised to book early to get the time slot of their choice.
Flu & Vaccination: Immunisation against vaccine-preventable infections in the workplace can be an essential component of your risk management strategy. Health Surveillance Test: Health screening helps you find out if you have a particular disease or condition even if you feel perfectly well.
Far from simply ticking the box either for the Ofsted requirement to ensure ‘students are provided with high quality careers information and are fully aware of their choices following education’ or the DFE “Careers guidance and inspiration in schools” statutory guidance the Big Futures Show will provide students with meaningful material to help them make very important decisions about their future. Visiting students will be provided with a combined preparation pack and show guide prior to the event with lesson plans and additional content created specially for Big Futures Show. Instead of taking home a bag of freebies after the show each student will be provided with material designed to help them summarise their visit. A recent report by The Future Leaders Trust recently highlighted the challenges faced by coastal schools related to geographical, economic and cultural factors. Across our region students often miss out from the benefit of national employability and skills events that are difficult to access. The Big Futures Show will bring the benefits of these events to East Sussex students considering their futures. The Carers Breaks Dementia Engagement Service The Carers Breaks Dementia Engagement Service is a free service that works with people with dementia and their carers. Following a carers’ assessment of need a Community Support Worker works with the person with dementia and their carer for 6-8 weeks to explore activities in the home or local community that the person with dementia can enjoy. The Community Support Worker goes with the person with dementia and their carer to visit activities and help assess their needs and promote a choice of activities. Following a successful introduction of an activity the service works with the carer and/ or Social Worker to secure funding and provide a phased handover to a suitably skilled and experienced service provider or Personal Assistant. This then provides the carer with a regular break.

Philip Treacy Philip Treacy has become the world’s most in demand hat designer. His hats are as popular with European aristocrats as with Hollywood royalty. Widely credited for changing the perception of the hat, he designs hats to flatter and enhance the wearer. “I have had the greatest pleasure of having the opportunity to challenge people’s perception of what a hat should look like in the 21st century. I make hats because I love hats. It’s an enigmatic object that serves the human purpose only of beautification and embellishment, and making one feel good, whether you’re the observer of the spectacle or the wearer” — Philip Treacy

I initially met him the first time I went to New York. I went to his studio and first thought he was the cleaner because he was such a humble man. He led me up to the dressing room where there were two models sitting in front of a Hollywood style mirror, one was Linda Evangelista and the other was Naomi Campbell. It was the height of the supermodel era and I never even seen one before. As soon as Linda saw the hat
that I was carrying she came over to me and whispered in my ear ‘I hope I will be wearing that hat’ - and that is how she became the one in the photo. The hat is a face-veiling feather hat, dotted with Rhinestone baubles. Linda is fantastic at modelling and she is also very smart. I remember standing by the stage at a Paris fashion event, it was a very long stage with lots of models and I remember noticing that she waited for them all to get off before she made her entrance - little tricks like that make careers. There doesn’t seem to be many pictures of you in the book? I think there is maybe one in there, I love photography and I love fashion photography but I have zero interest in my picture being in there. The book catalogues the fantastic opportunity I have had of having my hats photographed by some of the greatest

photographers who have ever lived. It has been quite difficult to get these images for my book but all of the photographers have been very generous. Obviously there is quite a lot of work that has to be done to get agreement from everyone. One of the pictures in the book shows me as a child at a wedding in my home town in Ireland. I grew up across the road from a Church and I loved weddings. This was my past time and that is really how I started, weddings were the early fashion shows. When a wedding happens on a miserable day in Ireland you can imagine how exciting that can be for a small boy. I have got one sister and seven brothers and I was just interested in different things to them. Our teachers used to teach all the girls to sew and all the boys to do something else and so one day I asked if I could learn sew. The teacher agreed and after that taught all the boys to sew. I have always been interested in making things and working with my hands. I was making clothes for my sisters dolls and using my mother’s hand sewing machine. I wasn’t actually allowed to use it but when she was out at the end of our garden feeding the chickens I would sneak it out and use it as quickly as I could. I was obsessed with fashion but I didn’t really know what fashion meant. I remember studying the way my mother used to wear her hat, and the time she used to take putting it on. A hat is not something you just put on your head, the way you wear the hat really makes the hat. The angle you wear it at is something very personal to the wearer, and that is why I have always liked designing very precarious angles in my hats. Of course there is a mechanism within the hat that makes it sit securely at that angle, but the idea of something that looks like its precarious appeals to me. I also think the hat should not just be in proportion to the head, but should be suited to the whole body. Was your father supportive of your career? Yes he did encourage me by way of just letting me be. I
What’s On Editor Anna Townsend with Philip Treacy
remember overhearing a neighbour talking to my father and saying ‘don’t you think it is a bit strange that he is doing this’ and my father replied ‘whatever makes him happy’, which is really incredible for a man from rural Ireland in the 1970’s. How did you begin working with Karl Lagerfeld? My friend Isabella Blow decided that I should be working with him and so called his assistant in Paris and asked him to come to London to meet me. We were at a party and Isabella very unsubtely took me over to him and introduced me in a way that made it sound like I was doing him a favour, that was her whole approach. He invited Isabella and myself to Chanel in Paris. We met Karl three days before the Couture, I walked into the room and there was Karl Lagerfeld with Linda Evangelista in her red hair moment wearing an incredible Chanel outfit. Standing one side of Karl was Anna Wintour, Grace Covington and Helmut Newton and on the other was Tatjana Patitz, Herb Ritts and Herb Ritt’s mother, so you can imagine it was quite an intimidating moment. Karl asked me what I thought should go with Linda’s dress and he lead me over to a table which was covered in a vast range of incredible materials, feathers and other wonderful things. I was amazed at how easily he worked, he is a very personable person and is wonderful to work with. I had expected him to be very uptight but in fact it was quite the reverse. These sort of people want something that they have never seen before and that is exactly what you want to give them. Fashion people are sharp and they have seen everything before. Everyone is attracted to new things and so fashion is all about the next and the new. The other thing is that, whenever you create something it should look easy and effortless. Although it is a very labour intensive and difficult procedure to make something, it should always look effortless when it is finished. Could you tell us about your first fashion show? I was working in Paris with Chanel, Versace and Valentino, and I had met all the supermodels but only in terms of meeting them to put a hat on them. Photographs were appearing in newspapers showing me alongside them, which made it look like I was their best friend which of course I wasn’t. Amanda Burton who was a director at Harvey Nicholls called me up one day and asked me to come and see her for a meeting. She is a lovely person but could be very intimidating to speak to. She said to me ‘I am going to give you a show during London Fashion Week and I would like you to call up all your supermodel friends and get them to come to London to do the show’. I was more afraid of saying no to Amanda, than calling all the supermodels and asking that question, so I tried at first calling Christy Turlington in New York. I said ‘ I have been given a show in London, will you come along to it’ and she said ‘okay’, that was followed by Naomi Campbell also agreeing to come. London Fashion week has had its ups and downs over the years and this was at a very low time. Models were by-passing London because they were more interested in going to New York, but they all came and they made the show. Models are the unsung heroes of fashion because they bring it to life and of course in those days the models were superstars. I remember working at Chanel and waiting with Karl for Naomi Campbell to get off the Concorde, she was wearing white Mongolian fur and looked like a superstar. Models today turn up in jeans and a T-shirt. What’s the process you go through when you are making your hats? I make a prototype in a light weight material, I then send it to

Paris to someone who copies it exactly, to the millimetre in wood. He carves it by hand and from this we make the mould to be used to create the actual hat. It takes me about three weeks initially and it takes him about the same time to finish the carving. I often work late at night in my studio which is situated near Battersea Dogs Home. You don’t have any of the daily distractions of phones ringing or people calling around. I listen to my music which helps me in the creative process. You are always trying to get materials to do the impossible and that is what hat design is all about. You are dealing with a 2 dimensional material that has to flow and have life to it. The most important thing in hat designing is to understand the potential of the material you are dealing with. The only advancements in fashion are the development of new materials. Do you ever get any offers that you say no to? I have a pet hate that has happened on many occasions. Companies will ring up saying they want me to come along to an event billed as a Madhatters Tea Party. For a hat designer I find this rather mortifying and it is something that I really don’t want to do. Who are your customers? I make hats for private customers who want something very particular. I make hats for all cultures, and even cultures who say they don’t wear hats, but they do because I make them for them. I make hats for real people. This book obviously features lots of pictures of supermodels wearing my hats but most of the time I am making hats for normal people. One day it can be someone who has saved up to buy a hat for a special occasion and the next day it could be JK Rowling or Lady Gaga. When I was a small boy growing up in Ireland I used to really look forward to Top of The Pops every Thursday. All the stars had a very individual look, and I remember seeing Boy George for the first time and being inspired by his fashion style. He was one of the only people that I really wanted to meet and when I did he didn’t disappoint, he is very entertaining, he’s funny, he’s clever and witty and I am currently making a hat for him for his new appearance on the BBC Programme ‘The Voice’. He is hat obsessive and those are the people I depend upon. He wore a trilbee style hat that I made for him for about 15 years. People would come into the shop saying ‘I don’t want to look like Boy George’, but I would put the hat on them and they would say ‘I look good in this’ even Joan Collins brought that hat. Everyone brings their own personality to a hat. Printed on the back of Philip Treacy’s new book is a quote from Lady Gaga..... ‘If you were to ask me to remove my Philip Treacy hat at a party, in truth it is the emotional and physical equivalent of requesting I remove my liver.’ LADY GAGA. Could you tell us about how your relationship with Lady Gaga came about? I met her in Grace Jones dressing room. I was working with Grace Jones at the time and Lady Gaga is a huge Grace Jones fan, even though Grace Jones isn’t crazy about that. When Gaga started to wear hats, she frighteningly reminded me of Isabella Blow and for that reason I was hesitant about working with her. She approached me in a round about way by getting Georgio Armani to ask me to design a hat for her.
Thank You Philip Philip Treacy is now available, published by Rizzoli International Publications.
A visual delight, this book shares Philip’s favorite designs in 250 striking photographs, curated by Philip himself, and showcases his collaborations and personal relationships of one of the most influential and innovative hat designers of this century. His hats have been photographed by the most iconic image makers of our time, including Patrick Demarchelier, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Bruce Weber, and Irving Penn. His hats have been modeled on equally famous heads, ranging from Grace Jones and Lady Gaga to the Duchesses of Cornwall and Devonshire. Since his early friendships with Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen, Philip’s imaginative designs have been a synthesis of art and fashion, with materials ranging from silk and lace to Plexiglas and leather, trimmed with feathers or Swarovski crystals. Combining luxury and sophistication, his work has helped shape modern fashion. This first, highly personal book is a glamorous tour through Philip’s world, and documents how a hat can evoke the magic of life and speak to the transformative power of fashion.”

Wild Bird Care
Birds of a feather..
M
y mind takes me back, what a memorable year I have had. Lions hunting in the Masai Mara, Dolphins diving in Zanzibar, Scarlet Ibis in Trinidad, Hummingbirds in Tobago, Hoopoes in Spain plus all the wonderful variety of birds seen in my garden. Being a “birder” and someone who loves nature I find it easy to fulfil my desire to feast my eyes on the natural beauty this planet has to offer. Watching the acrobatic Blue Tits still thrills as it did many years ago when I was just knee high to a grasshopper. This year I have seen Badgers bickering, Hedgehogs humping, Starlings squabbling, Dunnocks duelling, Chiffchaffs chirping and Fieldfares.
Kingfisher at Dungeness RSPB reserve.
I do however feel a little sad that we have still not yet learnt how to conserve nature’s beauty, indeed, some are still inclined to think there is no need to.
