Bexhill Roaring 20’s
Returns on Saturday 23 July 2016
L
ots of exciting announcements about the Bexhill Roaring 20s 2016 to follow but some of the first news is a confirmation that Sir Malcolm Cambell’s water speed world record Bluebird K3 will be one of the star attractions of the vintage vehicles. On 1 September 1937, at Lake Maggiore on the border between Switzerland and Italy, K3 set a record of 126.32 mph,[2] breaking Gar Wood’s previous 5-year-old record.[1] The next day she improved this to 129.5 mph. Breaking the design speed of 130 would require another year, when on 17 August 1938 at Lake Hallwyl in Switzerland at 130.91 mph(210.63 km/h). The Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon made an unsuccessful but glamorous and very stylish attempt to reclaim the Charleston World Record for Australia at the begining of February this year. The previous record of 503 dancers, set in Bexhill last July was broken by 977 dancers who filled the streets of Spitalfields in East London in October 2015. The event was staged by Swing Patrol, a dance group part run by Scott Cupit, a BBC choreographer for Strictly Come Dancing. Both attempts were well publicised in all reports both in UK and abroad spreading the name and increasing awareness of Bexhill-on-Sea. There is now speculation of a possible attempt to bring the record to Bexhill at this years Roaring 20’s event on 23rd July.

Leisure HALO is bursting at the seams with beautiful new stock! The season starts off with lots of black, white & soft creams and will incorporate stronger brighter colours as the weather hots up. Geometric prints & textured fabric are strong looks this year. Whilst for the brave the fashion is to wear matching or even contrasting prints together, the majority of us will tone it down slightly & add a simple top in a plain colour. Printed trousers look great dressed down in the day with flats (or flip flops once warm) but are surprisingly dressy with the addition of heels and a strappy top. New this season are cropped wide leg culottes and jumpsuits. These can look as smart and feminine as a skirt whilst giving you the practicality of trousers. If you do prefer a dress when you go out, you’ll not be disappointed by the new styles from PAPERDOLLS. They are the “go-to” brand for a gorgeous dress whether it be a date, wedding or just about any occasion. A RABBIT IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR EASTER! Rabbits are a popular pet; unfortunately also one of the most neglected, often left without company, with a poor diet, living in cramped conditions. Highly intelligent and social animals, they live in large numbers in the wild; this need for companionship has not changed through their domestication. If seeing cute bunny pictures makes you feel you would like one as a pet, please consider very carefully whether you can cater properly for their long term care. Contact a rescue centre like The Kit Wilson Trust, where you will be given the correct information and can have the pleasure of caring for a rabbit that has not had the best start in life. It is important to neuter your rabbit; unwanted litters have little chance of finding good homes.

Saba DouglasHamilton
Saba is a Kenyan conservationist, BBC TV presenter and wildlife-filmmaker. She lives in Kenya with her husband, Frank Pope, and their three young children, and currently runs the family’s luxury tented eco-lodge, Elephant Watch Camp. A 10 part BBC series – This Wild Life – was recently shown about their lives in Samburu. In April she will be travelling to the UK to present her ‘A Life with Elephants UK Tour’
Born in Kenya with lions and warthogs in her back garden, speaking Kiswahili as her first language, Saba became entranced with wildlife at an early age. Her childhood was spent between Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda while her parents studied elephant behaviour then later battled to save them from the illegal ivory trade. Immediately after graduating she worked for Save the Rhino Trust, Namibia, where she ran a community conservation project to protect the rare desert-adapted black rhino. She then joined Save the Elephants in Kenya as the first Chief Operations Officer, to help set up a research station in Samburu National Reserve that now monitors a population of over 900 free-roaming elephants. Saba served as a trustee of Save the Elephants for a decade and has lectured extensively to raise awareness about
conservation issues. With ivory trade at an all time high, the charity is focussed on stopping the killing, thwarting the traffickers and reducing demand for ivory worldwide. In 2014 she stepped down from her role as a trustee to become the Chair of the Advisory Board and Head of Special Projects. In 2000 Saba was talent-spotted by the BBC Natural History Unit and began her career as a wildlife filmmaker, hosting nine TV series including Secret Life of Elephants, Big Cat Diary and Unknown Africa, and over twenty-four wildlife documentaries. She directed two award-winning films for Animal Planet, Heart of a Lioness and Rhino Nights, which documented previously unknown behaviour for the first time.

What’s On Magazine spoke exclusively to Saba to talk about her forthcoming UK tour. How did your business at the Elephant Camp begin? My mother built the camp in 2001 and opened in 2002. I was ‘kind of’ involved then, just helping her set it up and doing the interior decorating, but in those days I was also working as wildlife film maker, so I was always travelling away to do other things. Since I had my children I have been helping out more on the management side, and in 2014 we moved up here properly and we are now spending huge amounts of time on the business. The only thing that kept us away was trying to figure out what to do about the childrens education. Since September last year we have had a teacher here who has been home schooling the kids so we are now living at the camp ten months of the year. In
the rainy season we move back to Nairobi Is your mother still involved with the business? Yes she is still an Executive Director of the company but I am managing the camp and dealing with the day to day running of it. She lives on a farm about 7 hours drive away. I understand you have other holiday lodges around you, but how remove are you from the rest of civilisation? We are pretty remote where we are, the nearest lodge is about a 20 minute drive which is a slightly more permanent tented camp. There are two reserves, Buffalo Reserve and Samburu Reserve where we are and between them they have possibly got around eight lodges, although one got washed away in a flood. Tourism has been quite depressed for the last couple of years in Kenya for all the reasons that people are not travelling around,
mostly the underlying terrorism threat that everyone feels which of course can happen anywhere in the world, and then of course the global recession has also had an impact. We attract quite a specialist group of people who are interested in both elephants and conservation. Eco tourism is a word that gets banded around a lot and it has slightly lost its meaning, but we focus specifically on conservation tourism. When you come to us you know you are going to engage in a big way both emotionally and intellectually, as well as physically in conservation. Of course its not just about the elephants because we have so many other species living around here. We are all very passionate about it and I think it brings a whole new dimension to travelling and seeing wildlife. How many people can you accommodate at the camp? We have got six tents and a family room, so we can take fourteen people comfortably and our bookings are usually anywhere between three days and a week. Could you explain about the other things you are involved with? I am the chairman of the Advisory Board for Save The Elephants, as well as being in charge of special projects. Prior to that, I used to be a trustee of the charity and a Chief of Operations some time before that. I am managing the elephant camp and I am a director of our company Elephant Watch Safaris. I am also the chair of the Future for Nature Award which is a brilliant conservation award in the Netherlands which takes up about two weeks of my time each year. Its a fantastic spring board for young conservationists who are doing exceptional work. In terms of presenting I don’t really do that much any more. The BBC series This Wild Life was the last project which aired in September last year. I loved my period as a presenter but now I am more interested in the directing side of things and of course we are so involved with conservation, we don’t really have time to do much else. Do you have anything planned for the future regarding filming projects? We have tons of film crews coming through here all the time. I am not sure whether we will do another series but that is always a possibility. For the moment there is so much going on in Elephant World, that we are a bit overworked.

Has your public profile helped you out with the camp? Certainly I got asked to join Future For Nature because at the time I was quite a well known wildlife presenter and it definitely helps to have a bit of a public profile to be able to get up and talk in public about conservation. I am certainly delighted that people are interested in what I have to say about conservation. Would you ever consider making and producing your own documentary? Yes I have worked as a producer and director before and have actually made two films that have won awards. Most of my time was in presenting but I loved the directing and producing aspect. I think if I went back into film making now, it would definitely be more in a directing or producing role. There are so many wonderful stories to be told from Africa that I may go back into it one day but not in the immediate future. Our children are still quite small and so I need to be around for them. Can you tell us about your forthcoming UK lecture tour? The main thrust of the tour is about trying
038_March038.indd 6
to engage people with the wild world and impassion people about conservation. Obviously if people want to come out and experience it at our camp that’s a complete bonus. What I love doing is showing people the magic of these incredible animals that we share this planet with and why the natural world is so special. Which obviously is why we should be doing everything we possibly can to protect it. We are not separate from it, we are at the heart of it, and we have to protect the biosphere as its the fabric of life that we depend upon. What sort of daily problems do you encounter at the camp? This last season we have had massive amounts of rain, we are on the banks of a river so we had a lot of flash floods coming down and it was touch and go at one point just before Christmas which is when everyone is just about to arrive for the holidays. We thought we might have to evacuate the camp. We are based in the North of Kenya which is an incredible wild frontier which is inhabited mostly by nomadic pastoralists who move with the seasons but in the past two decades these people have become more settled so
there is quite a lot of local environmental degradation which means that the rain doesn’t get absorbed in the earth as it ought to, and as it use to in the old days. The consequence is that we are getting a lot more run off going into the rivers and that means we are now in a cycle of flash floods coming down. We close the camp in April and December as this is the most vulnerable time. This year we had so much rain over the Christmas period that it was quite nerve wracking trying to predict what the river was going to do, we had to have an evacuation plan in place and we were having to constantly fix roofs. We had to make sure our guests were not going to get stuck in the camp and were able to get out and see the elephants and other wildlife as well as being able to get back safely without being cut off by a flood. Of course that’s part of the adventure of being here. We often have elephants appearing in the camp, in fact we just had a big bull elephant here last night called ‘Saraya’. It is interesting trying to navigate around at night anticipating where you think he might be in the dark. He is very good at hiding in the bushes but he’s a bit feisty so he will hide there very quietly and then
22/02/2016 11:17:47
all of a sudden we will bump into each other and he will make a mock charge which is rather terrifying. That happens more to me and the staff as we are a little bit further out on the edges of the camp where he likes to lurk. Is the camp fully occupied at the moment until the April rain season? Yes, we are full at the moment and it starts to taper off in March which is actually quite nice because it is so hot. We then start packing everything up and making sure everything is out of reach of the water. In May when the rains have stopped there is an abundance of grass and its incredibly lush and green. All the elephants are in seventh heaven, they are all getting nice and fat which makes them feel very sexy and they are all mating and cavorting around. Its really an interesting to see all their social behaviour happening, and it is the best time to come out and watch elephants. How are you coping with the business side as this is your first proper business project? It has been going pretty well for the last six months. Any problems we have had have been beyond our control. We had cancellations in December because of
the attacks in Paris. These attacks make people very frightened of travelling anywhere and they become much more cautious so it is only the more adventurous people who come out. I think people are gradually realising that these attacks can happen anywhere so that’s mainly given people a more optimistic approach to their travelling. We are lucky because we are very specialised in what we offer and people who are really interested in elephants and conservation tend to be more aware of what’s going on in Africa, so they are not as frightened as other people. Do you have any plans for a book and if so would it be an autobiography or something else? I think it would be about my experiences in Africa and about the fantastic wild animals that live our here. How do you get into the mind-set of a lion? How do you get to know elephants? The stories of these individual animals and what we can learn from them are amazing and the things that you can learn from Nomadic tribesmen. I think it would be a love story about Africa.
I think the main thing is that in North Kenya there has been a massive collaborative effort between different local and county governments. This means we have managed to get the poaching level down to a pre 2008 level. Unfortunately that is not the same story in other parts of Africa and there is still a huge hurdle to get over. We are certainly not sitting back and patting ourselves on the back, but it’s a respite. We must still continue the fight one hundred percent against the illegal trade.

Star Plant has been running since 1987 and although every customer’s wants and needs are different, we tend to be asked the same questions. We thought by answering some of these on paper, it might be helpful to prospective new customers, so here goes….. What exactly is hot tar and chippings? Hot tar and chippings is a value for money surface dressing that can be laid on new or existing paths, driveways or car parks. How do you lay it? Once the surface levels are correct, we lay hot k170 bitumen (tar) onto the surface using a hand lance. We then spread the stone chippings over the surface before rolling in with our heavy roller. My existing drive is damaged and also needs extending. Is this something you can do? We are able to repair existing drives and can also create new areas. We fill in the holes with MOT Type 1 or tarmac to create a perfect surface to lay on. (Think of marzipan levelling the cake before icing is put on!) I only have a small area to be surfaced, is this a problem? Not at all. Our bespoke equipment allows us access to areas where others are unable to reach. I have a steep area which gets slippery at times, what’s the best surface for this? Although tar and chipping is our mainstay, we can also lay a resin bond surface where resin is spread on the ground and the stone is stuck to it. Once set, the loose stone is swept off creating a non-slip surface. We can use the same stone as the rest of your drive so that there is very little difference to the naked eye. I’ve no idea what it costs and don’t want to waste your time. We are more than happy to visit you and discuss your requirements before sending you a totally free no-obligation quote. Customers are often surprised at how much cheaper tar and chippings are compared to tarmac and other surfaces. There are other surfacing companies. Why makes you special? The way we surface is unique to us. We put fibre reinforcement in the bitumen to make it more durable and flexible (a bit like a carpet on a hard floor). Depending upon traffic, a new surface could last 20 years. Because we get our stone from inland quarries, you could come back to us for extra work in the future and the stone colour would be consistent. To sum up then, Star Plant is a small family business which focuses on good customer service. We will listen to you and do our utmost to ensure you love your new drive. In fact, we don’t ask for payment until you are happy!

Chelsea 2016
A
n 80-foot carriage from the Belmond British Pullman, sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, will form part of a 6,000sq foot plantedup station in the Great Pavilion • Horticultural showman Diarmuid Gavin is back with ‘The British Eccentrics Garden’ featuring bizarre garden gadgetry that comes to life every 15 minutes • An acoustic garden inspired by world-leading percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie will play musical notes to visitors • Horticultural inspiration from around the world, including Jordan, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Japan, Chile, Australia and more… Today, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is sharing some of the floral and garden highlights of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 (24–28 May), sponsored by M&G Investments. The world’s most famous gardening event will exhibit a variety of exciting, innovative and quirky designs.
Floral highlights
This year in the Great Pavilion, the jewel in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show’s crown, the RHS welcomes Bowdens to its central monument site. The Devon-based multiRHS Gold medal winning nursery takes the largest space at the show with a 6,000sq ft planted-up train station. Centrepiece of the exhibit will be an 80ftlong carriage from 1920s Belmond British Pullman (sister train to the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express) with liveried stewards, linen and crockery. The train stands in the middle of a timetravel journey, with plants ranging from beautiful neat hostas on Platform 1 to rare jungle ferns on Platform 2, the display takes you on a plant seeker’s journey. Millais Nurseries will this year celebrate the centenary of the Rhododendron Society, which held its first AGM at Chelsea Flower Show in 1916. Their walk through exhibit will compare large growing plants that were favoured 100 years ago, to the modern, compact varieties better suited to today’s smaller gardens. The Great Pavilion, a 12,000sq metre marquee big enough to park 500 London buses, will feature more than 100 exhibits from the world’s best nurseries, growers and florists. Nurseries exhibiting for the first time at the show include

Tom Smith Plants, Hogarth Hostas and Love the Plot You’ve Got.
Show Garden highlights
Among the highlights this year is multiaward winning designer Cleve West’s return for RHS Chelsea Flower Show sponsor M&G Investments, with a garden inspired by a memory of the ancient oak woodland on Exmoor National Park where the designer spent his teenage youth. The garden will feature approximately 30–40 tonnes of stone, sourced from a quarry in the Forest of Dean, and includes a stone and gravel path with woodland-edge planting leading to a sunken terrace and pool. Diarmuid Gavin, who won Gold with a multi-tiered garden in 2011, will present ‘The British Eccentrics Garden’ in 2016, sponsored by Harrods. Diarmuid was inspired by the inventions of some the UK’s most imaginative minds, such as the cartoonist William Heath Robinson, known for his drawings of ridiculously complicated machines that achieved simple objectives. Diarmuid has designed a beautifully gentle garden of terraces and topiary complete with octagonal folly and

a sunken Italianate pond. As the garden of an eccentric, however, this peace is designed to be disturbed. Box balls set amid the floral drifts begin to bob up and down, conical bay trees begin to twirl, and colourful planting rises from the ground to dress the first-floor windows. A wooden shed houses contraptions created from cogs, wheels, straps and parts of old bicycles which form the garden gadgetry. This is the playground of an inventor, who loves his garden but loathes the work involved in its upkeep, and so has concocted his very own DIY scheme. Great Pavilion veteran Rosy Hardy branches out with her first Show Garden: ‘Forever Freefolk’, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin. It is inspired by endangered chalk streams, which provide a rich habitat for aquatic plants, insects and wildlife, but are slowly disappearing. With only 210 left in the world, 160 of which are in England, Rosy’s garden tracks the path of a vanished chalk stream in north Hampshire as it passes through various transitional planting: from the arid stream bed through the chalk downland to the lush planting that fringes the beautiful clear waters of its source. Combining stylistic elements of the East and West, Chihori Shibayama & Yano Tea create their first Chelsea Show Garden for Watahan & Co, which aims to convey the diverse cultures of the UK and Japan. The design reflects both the manicured minimalist Zen gardens of Japan while incorporating the dense informal planting styles found in the UK. Designed for
054_March054.indd 3
people living in urban areas, the garden aims to make visitors feel they can move seamlessly between two cultures united within a single landscape. Other Show Garden highlights include Chris Beardshaw’s return to Chelsea with a garden for Morgan Stanley which will be located at the heart of Great Ormond Street Hospital after the Show, James Basson with ‘The L’Occitane Garden’; Jo Thompson, who has designed ‘The Chelsea Barracks Garden’; RHS Young Designer of the Year 2010 Hugo Bugg, back with ‘Royal Bank of Canada Garden’; and Andy Sturgeon with ‘The Telegraph Garden’ which features the work of 10 different craftsman including architectural ironworks, artists, sculptors, ceramists and more.
Artisan Garden highlights
Peter Eustance of Symphonic Gardens has developed an acoustic Artisan Garden for disability charity Papworth Trust, inspired by world-famous percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. The garden creates an acoustic pulse inspired by Evelyn’s love of the ‘sea music’ produced by the women of the Vanuatu islands who create amazing rhythmic songs with just their hands, water and voices. Returning to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Sarah Eberle draws on international inspiration for her garden for Viking Cruises, based on the floating gardens of the silk-weaving region of the Mekong River in Cambodia. Largely made up of water, with a small deck leading to a ‘floating’ lounger styled on a traditional fishing boat, this oasis also features a cantilevered
parasol inspired by traditional fishing nets, and silk weaving provides shade.
Fresh Garden highlights
Fresh Gardens are expected to make a splash with an assortment of conceptual designs to excite and engage visitors. Tackling the controversial subject of modern-day slavery, Juliet Sargent’s Chelsea debut aims to raise awareness of the 13,000 slaves living in the UK, as well as more than 27 million worldwide. This struggle is represented by two contrasting atmospheres: empty, lifeless and black inside; colourful and open on the outside. The open doors and path represent the way to freedom for modern slaves. Also exhibiting in the Fresh category for The Marble and Granite Centre are design duo Martin Cook and Gary Breeze, who have created a garden set inside a giant 2.5m granite cube. This is a representation of a world turned inside out; a garden inside a sculpture; desolation verses life; civilisation versus nature. The huge, hollowed-out cube features a mirrored interior and open top – the interior is full of planting, invisible from the stark, ash-charred exterior other than through cracks. Other highlights in the Fresh and Artisan section include ‘The World Vision Garden’ designed by John Warland, which symbolises how unpredictable and vulnerable life is. ‘The Dye Garden’ demonstrates age-old techniques used by artists such as Rembrandt of using plants to dye fabrics in the most beautiful colours. After winning Silver-gilt at last year’s show, John Everiss returns with a garden for Meningitis Now. Tickets to RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 are now available to buy at rhs.org.uk/ flowershows.

Pro Argi9+ for Athletes Pro Argi9+ is a natural supplement that helps the body produce more nitric oxide. Nitric Oxide is the master signalling molecule of the cardiovascular system. It has many functions including –airway relaxation for improved lung function and the dilation of blood vessels for improved circulation. By improving circulation the transport of oxygen and nutrients to cells and the removal of waste products and lactic acid from cells is speeded up. This then results in improved performance of the working muscles, faster recovery and better muscle development. Senior Living Heart Research UK’s weekly Healthy Tip - Healthy bodies and minds Mental health services in the UK have been under the media spotlight in recent weeks and, as poor mental health affects one in four people at some point in their lives, it’s an issue close to many people’s hearts. Mental health is closely linked with physical health, including weight, diet, blood pressure and activity levels, and living with poor mental health in the long term can also affect heart health if not properly addressed. Heart Research UK is sharing its tips for a healthy heart, body and mind.
Eat well
For many people eating habits are intertwined with feelings of boredom, sadness or reward. But eating well will help to boost energy levels, manage weight and keep your skin clear for a more confident you. - Sugary foods give an instant energy hit, followed by a ‘crash’ often accompanied by feelings of guilt. Snack instead on fruits for a sweet treat with no strings attached. - Eat three regular meals a day including lean protein sources like chicken and fish and plenty of fibre from wholegrains and pulses to keep hunger at bay and energy levels up. - Keep a clear head by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to help you stay focused and stave off the urge to snack.
Exercise
Being active can be a fantastic way to relieve the symptoms of mental health problems. - Exercise releases the body’s feel-good hormones ‘endorphins’, which can help to lift your mood and put a motivated spring in your step. - As well as feeling more positive and energised, exercise can help you to shift any extra pounds and be a welcome distraction from the things that are getting you down. - Invest in yourself with just 30 minutes of physical activity each day. A brisk walk or gentle jog could help you to unwind and feel more positive and in control. - Set yourself an end goal to keep you motivated. Go to heartresearch.org.uk/events for inspiration.
Why write a will?
If you have not written a will
The Government will decide, through the courts, who should benefit from your life time’s work, who should inherit and who should bring up your children.
If you have written a will
You decide who you want to handle your affairs these are known as Executors and Trustees If you have children you decide on whom you want to bring up your children and you can leave instructions on Education and Religious upbringing. These are known as Guardians. You decide who should benefit from the will and at what age. You can also decide on who you do not want to inherit from the will. arlier in February we had a talk at Feathers on “African Wild Life”. If you ever get the opportunity to go to this fabulous continent - get yer binoculars and camera packed and take in the amazing sights on offer.
