Phoenix Choir: Our rich treasury of folk song has long inspired composers and arrangers to raise humble material to Art, giving us glimpses of lives and times we cannot know, but which we still recognise have a connection to our world. Phoenix Choir is joined by West End star Nigel Richards (who has played leading roles in Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera), Ansy Boothroyd and the Eastbourne Youth Concert Band in a nostalgic vision of England seen through music, from folk songs and Rule Britannia to music hall hits, Beatles’ songs and sacred works by leading living composers.

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Landlords 1. Not investing in kitchens and bathrooms - It costs relatively little to tile a bathroom and provide clean and new worktops in kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms are a major “turnoff ” on viewings. 2. Installing light cream coloured carpets - They look modern, but stain quickly – Darker shades are much more serviceable. 3. Not reviewing rent regularly, particularly when the same tenant stays in the property. Allowing rent levels to fall behind market rate can significantly impact your property. 4. Not Carrying out credit checks on tenants- The most credit worthy looking tenant may have CCJs and a record of exploiting unwary landlords. 5. Not putting up a “to let” board- As a result no-one passing and no one locally knows it’s available to let.
If you have any questions about letting your property, or would like free, no obligation advice please call us on 01424 751805.

Claudette Leet Here at my Exhibition Space you will find a vision and creative thinking that makes you want to look and ask questions – and then look some more. Rhythms, tensions and polarities emerge reflecting emotions mostly in an abstract way, and sometimes even non-figuratively - but always completely spontaneously, intuitively and in an investigative manner, abstracted from my residual memory and imagination. It’s not Art for the faint-hearted but for the imagination of thinkers - the individualistic mind that is prepared to let go of institutional brainwashing and perimeter logic - it allows you to find yourself and be who you are.

Bexhill’s Anglo Continental Market Sat & Sun 16/17 May 2015
Now in it’s 16th year the Bexhill Anglo Continental Market is very popular both with shoppers and traders. Devonshire Road is closed to traffic and for two weekends a year (May & September), becomes the venue for a real Continental Street Market. Around 50 traders at the market bring the taste and smells of the Continent to Bexhill. We have genuine French traders and many local traders and crafts people including soft furnishings, home made cakes, handbags, cheeses, shoes, scarves, crockery, basketwork and much more. Also, as in previous years, some classic cars will be on display. Make a day of it. Enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants or cafes, come and visit the De La Warr Pavilion or Bexhill Museum, or just have a leisurely stroll around the market, shops and sea front. Bexhill welcomes visitors - you can park for free all day on our sea front and for a couple of hours in most of our town centre roads. MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR VIEWINGS BY KATE LOVERING POLECAT PROPERTIES
When presenting your home to others, ask yourself one question; “when do I like my house the most?” is it when there is clutter everywhere, the floors and the hoover haven’t met in a week, likewise the sideboard and the duster and remnants of the kid’s playtime are causing health and safety hazards throughout your home or is it when it looks orderly and clean? Don’t panic though, you don’t have to put your life on hold, no one expects a show home. Sometimes a house which looks lived in can be advantageous as it helps prospective occupiers imagine themselves living there. However you want to maximise the perceived potential of your house, obviously there are the old adages of having bread baking, but in case dough kneading is not your idea of a good time here are a few pointers: • Minimise clutter, it can make rooms seem smaller and make storage appear problematic. • Make the house as light as possible, unfortunately this means window cleaning! Try and ensure all light bulbs are working as a ‘darker’ room will seem more acceptable if the flick of a light switch transforms it to ‘cosy’. • Try to avoid the junk room/dumping ground. A lot of us will have an area in our house where we just dump stuff which ‘we might use one day’, however if you do not see this space as useful living space others will not either. • Ensure the agent has all the information. E.g. if you had a new roof put on a year ago, make sure a prospective buyer knows there is one less cost which they are likely to face in the immediate future. • Let the agent do their job. As the vendor you are too emotionally involved, you may inadvertently sabotage your home’s positives, you do not want to draw attention to the reasons as to why your home no longer suits you. Avoid putting unforeseen concerns into a buyers mind, nor do you want to be perceived to be overcompensating by gushing about your home. • If looking to rent the property try to keep colour schemes neutral. • Finally don’t be afraid of spending a few pennies in order to maximise value. It’s very easy to mentally vacate your property before physically doing so. You don’t need to go overboard but a lick of paint can transform a room without completely annihilating the bank balance. Ultimately have some common sense, regardless of what you do, your home will not be for everyone, try not to become disheartened, if you, at one time saw the potential in your house then someone else will do too. If you have questions about selling your property, or would like free, no obligation advice please call us on 01424 217337 Polecat Properties, 22a Wilton Road, Bexhill-On-Sea, East Sussex TN40 1HX

P
Paula Radcliffe bows out with a flourish and a smile
aula Radcliffe was presented with the inaugural John Disley London Marathon Lifetime Achievement Award at the end of her emotional farewell performance at this years Virgin Money London Marathon. It was a fitting conclusion to an exceptional career for the women’s world record holder, who finished her final race in 2:36:55, a time which placed her ahead of the British Championship field and arguably faster than either she, or the huge crowds, had dared to hope. “I came in underprepared, and I know I set out too fast,” she admitted. In fact, she recorded an opening mile in the region of 5:30 and a first 5K of 17:27, but such enthusiasm should be forgiven when considering how much this journey meant to her and, indeed, what the journey of her career has meant to those around her. “When I heard about the Lifetime Achievement Award it was so touching,” she said. “This is a really special event and everyone will tell you that, and for me it was very, very special to be given that award.” Paulas glittering, record-breaking career, which has inspired so many men and women to run, began as a child when she herself caught the bug by watching her father take part in the London Marathon. She went on to win in London three times between 2002 and 2005, and in 2003 smashed the women’s world record, a time still almost three minutes faster than any other woman has achieved. After a decade away from the adoring supporters who lined the 2015 route, Paula said she was grateful to be given a chance to run this year, albeit as part of the mass race. She had said she would run hard to be the
best she could be on the day, rather than to meet the kind of target split times which once dominated her race thoughts. As it was, the majority of female runners on the course, and many of the men for that matter, would have been delighted to achieve the times she made as she raced through the capital. To put it into context, her opening 10K alone would have ranked in the top 30 among
British women in 2015 to date – without an additional 20 miles to consider. She clocked an opening half of 1:17:03 and a second half of 1:19:53. As she came into The Mall the crowd rose to greet her and Paula responded. “I knew it would be emotional and it was,” she said. “I nearly lost it at Bird Cage Walk, but the crowds bowled me over. I wanted it to last forever. “I didn’t really have any times in my head, I just wanted to enjoy it, but the first mile was too quick. I just had so much fun out there and every time I tried to slow down, the crowd got me going again and I had to rein it in. “My pace was more about my body holding out, but there’s a magic about it that helps you get a bit more out of yourself.”
Paula supported this year’s London Marathon social media campaign #handinhand by trying to cross the line hand in hand with a fellow runner in honour of the event’s first ever winners, Dick Beardsley and Inge Simonsen, who finished together at the inaugural London Marathon in 1981. “I was thinking about it as I was coming into The Mall,” she said. “There were guys in front of me that I’d run with for a lot of the race and I was shouting to them. I just wanted someone
to celebrate that hand in hand gesture with. I always wanted to run with my dad but never managed it, so I did it in spirit instead.” Paula’s final London Marathon race week has been filled with joy and with memories that will stay with her forever. “There were so many special memories, that to pick out one is very hard,” she said. “It’s been so special from start to finish, from the moment I was told about the Lifetime Achievement Award, to feeling the magic and anticipation building throughout the week. “I’m really going to miss it. I’ve been so lucky to have a career that is also my hobby, and this is not the end. I’ve always run and I’ll continue to run, just not competitively. When I couldn’t run, I really appreciated what a gift it is, and I’m a better person when I run.” Her legacy will go on of course, as girls and women continue to be inspired by what she has achieved and what she will continue achieve, including her young daughter Isla. London thanked Paula. But, as she ran towards the Finish Line for the final time, she felt that she owed London a thank you too, for creating memories that will last forever.

F
or actor Helen George running the Virgin Money London Marathon was about so much more than crossing the Finish Line. The Call the Midwife actor took on the 26.2mile challenge for Macmillan, but hopes her efforts will encourage young people, especially women, to exercise and enjoy sport to stay fit and healthy. Helen, who plays the fun-loving, partygoing character of Trixie Franklin in the BBC’s hugely successful drama, is making her marathon debut. But like so many people, had done very little exercise since school, despite loving sport when she was younger. “I did loads of sport when I was at school, and a bit of ballet,” she said. “But then you become a student and you don’t want to do sport, you want to go out all the time. “I competed in the long jump and honestly believed I would become the first female manager of Aston Villa. “Now that I’m starting to get back into sport I train a lot and I’ve started rock climbing, which I love. I think it’s really important to look after your body because it’s the key to your health. It’s not about looking good but feeling good.” Helen added that Sport England’s recent This Girl Can campaign had really inspired her to give 100 per cent to her marathon training. “It’s a brilliant campaign because it hasn’t been about getting skinny but about getting fit and healthy,” she said. “It really resonated because it’s aimed at women like me who might not have done much sport or exercise since their school days.”
034_May034.indd 4
The soprano Aliki Chrysochu, who ran the London Marathon for The Encephalitis Society, echoed Helen George’s words, saying: “It is tough to commit to a regular fitness regime, but if you want to be healthy, live a long life and feel good about yourself, it’s great to have a goal like the marathon to focus on.” There’s no doubt the London Marathon itself has played a big part in encouraging more women to take up running and lead a healthier lifestyle since the first race in 1981. Back then less than five per cent of the 6,255 finishers were women, but over the years that proportion has gradually grown, and in 2015 around 37 per cent of the London field are women. Reality TV duo Hugo Taylor and Oliver Proudlock may have trained together, but they are inspired to race by very different causes. Oliver, best known for his starring role in Made in Chelsea, admits that he’s wiped out his social life for this year’s race, but it’s been worth it to support the British Heart Foundation (BHF), especially after the death of his grandmother due to a heart condition. “I’m really happy and I feel better for it,” he said. “I’ve trained hard because I want to run under four hours.” Fellow cast member Hugo Taylor, who has also taken part in I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, was running for Malaria No More and the children’s charity Rainbow Trust. “I got the opportunity to run again and I knew it would motivate me to train through
the dark winter afternoons,” he said. “At last year’s London Marathon I got emotional during the last six miles when I started to think about all the people I was doing this for, but that’s what pushes you along.” Lee Hendrie also ran for a cause close to his heart. The former Aston Villa and England footballer was hugely affected by the suffering of his friend and team-mate Stiliyan Petrov, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in March 2012. Hendrie has recently become an ambassador for Cure Leukaemia. “I’m doing this for Stiliyan,” he said. “He’s ok now, but knowing what he and his family went through touched us all at Villa Park.

Sir Richard Branson and Marathon Director Hugh Brasher announance a fundraising milestone of £250 million achieved by the Virgin Money London Marathon.
S
Fundraising milestone of £250million achieved by the Virgin Money London Marathon
ince the first race in 1981, runners have raised more than £716 million for good causes. In fact, the Marathon is the largest annual one day fundraising event in the world. A lot of money is raised through online donation sites, who naturally charge for the service they provide. Virgin Money have put their expertise with money and their financial systems to good use, and come up with an alternative that’s 100% not-for-profit. So millions more £s would go where they’re
needed most. The online donation site virginmoneygiving.com was born. More about Virgin Money Giving Virgin Money pledged to help the runners raise an extra £250 million in the first five years of their Marathon sponsorship, and Virgin Money Giving has been a big part of that. It takes just minutes to set up and share a page, and there are lots of great fundraising ideas, tips and tools to help everyone raise more.
As well as being the official fundraising website for the Marathon, Virgin Money Giving has helped thousands of events and charities, big and small, throughout the UK raise hundreds of millions of pounds. And because it’s 100% not-forprofit, an extra £9.5 million has reached charities because fundraisers used virginmoneygiving.com. Virgin Money committed to helping the race raise even more for charity in the coming years.

SENLAC CLASSIC CAR SHOW AND CRAFT FAYRE Bodiam Sunday 21st June 2015
It’s Father’s Day on June 21st and this must mean it is time for the Senlac Classic Car Show. Billed as one of the big local shows, the success of the Senlac is built on an appeal to the whole family. True there will be hundreds of fantastic classic cars plus military and commercial vehicles; yes there will be charity and craft stalls in a broad avenue to tempt all tastes; of course there will be oodles of rides for children; plus there will be the food and drink outlets and then there will be the day long entertainment featuring even more stars than ever before. If you want a great day out this is the place to be. The show last year was once again the biggest ever and well over £10,000 was given to local and Rotary charities. The 400 or so classic vehicles on show formed the centrepiece of a great display, thousands of visitors thronged the showground helping to raise more funds for charity than any other day in the show’s 23 year history. What makes this show different? It is all about families, all about our shared history and all about a celebration of Dad! It is also all about co-operation; each year we are stunned by the support from local Bodiam people, from local businesses from the classic car show fraternity and from the generous crowds who come to have a fun day and in so doing help to add to the £100,000 total which the show has raised for charity. The Senlac Show sets out to create the friendliness of the village fayre whilst at the same time offering a vast range of activities to celebrate DADs! 50th Annual Traction Engine Rally Sat 30th and Sun 31st May 2015 Since the late 1800’s Claude Jessett’s family lived in Hadlow Down and after Claude married Joyce nearly sixty years ago they spent all their married life in the family home at Tinkers Park. Claude had an interest in all things mechanical and acquired his first traction engine during the Second World War. The engine remains part of the collection, and played no small part in inspiring Claude and Joyce to hold their first steam rally in 1966. Since then there has been an unbroken line of fifty annual Steam Rallies, each one providing a chance to see a fascinating range of exhibits, from the smallest stationary engine driving a water pump, to a huge traction engine designed for ploughing fields. With steam rollers, tractors, cars and motorbikes being just some of the exhibits on show this year’s rally promises to be a wonderful occasion for adults and children alike. The famous Jessett collection of mechanical musical instruments will be in operation, as will the “Great Bush Railway”. Pause to watch the steam engine events while enjoying some hot or cold food along with a pint of Harveys from the beer tent. The Harris family’s traditional fairground has been involved since the first rally and their rides are sure to be a hit with everyone. Then it’s on to the stalls, with all manner of items for sale, from autojumble and tools to books and plants. Right from the start the rally has been in aid of Cancer Research UK and this year is no exception. For more information please visit www.tinkerspark.com

‘Americana: On the Edge’,
a three-day art exhibition/cultural event to be held in Hastings this July, is a culmination of over 5 years of artwork created by American screenwriter and artist Chris Miles. Rather than just settle for a typical, quaint exhibition in an East Sussex gallery, he decided it’d be more fulfilling to have a cultural event, to put on a show! In fact, veteran Hollywood actor, Bo Hopkins, will be a guest speaker at the event. Chris and Bo first met over 15 years ago when they collaborated on a film project, ‘Seven Days to Valhalla’, a factual crime-drama based on a screenplay written by Chris. Of course, Mr. Hopkins is famous for his roles in such classic movies as ‘American Graffiti’, ‘Midnight Express’ and ‘The Wild Bunch’. Chris’s cutting-edge exhibition depicts over a century of U.S. history, culture and politics; it both celebrates and condemns various people and events of the past and present from the enigmatic land ‘across the pond’. An event mixing together such ingredients as 100 illustrations, legendary actor Bo Hopkins, classic music from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s and a generous helping of American-style buffet is sure to create a recipe for an enjoyable and informative 3-day weekend. Bruckner was a controversial figure but he was also the composer of some of the 19th century’s grandest, greatest and most ambitious music. Premiered in 1872 Bruckner’s Mass in F minor crowns his long years of apprenticeship as a composer and after hearing it at one performance the composer Johannes Brahms applauded enthusiastically. Joining the 90 voices of Battle Choral Society will be soloists; Jessica Leschnikoff, soprano Emily Steventon, mezzo-soprano, Gary Marriott, tenor and Michael White, bass. Chelsea 2015 Pushing Technology to the Limits at Chelsea
T
Discovery Zone at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to include Breakthrough Science and Exciting Insight
his year’s Discovery Zone at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (19 – 23 May 2015), sponsored by M&G Investments, will feature cutting-edge technology to examine the world around us, the ability horticulture has to make us happy, and an exceptional venture into outer space. Newly named at last year’s show, this key educational area in the Great Pavilion will offer visitors the chance to learn more about the science behind a variety of everyday items, such as soil, tobacco and hops, and teach children the health benefits of growing and cooking produce from scratch. Out of this world science In 2015, RHS Campaign for School Gardening is embarking on a high-profile project with the UK Space Agency and European Space Agency to engage young people in Science and Horticulture by using space as a catalyst. This project, which will be a first for Europe, will turn half a million kids into science biologists as 2kg of rocket seeds are sent into space to stay on the International Space Station for several months. The seeds will then return to Earth in 2016 and be distributed to up to 10,000 schools to grow along with control seeds, measuring any differences in growth. The exhibit will explore the latest discoveries in growing fruit and veg in space. Flowers to make you smile Thrive is the leading charity in the UK that uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people who are living with disabilities or ill health, or are isolated,
disadvantaged or vulnerable. This process is known as social and therapeutic horticulture (STH), and their exhibit, co-ordinated by David Domoney, intends to inspire visitors to the power plants have to make us feel happy. Using the latest technology, it will aim to identify the most popular plant that brings a smile to your face. Inside the Hop Cycle – do you know your Fuggle from your wort? Wadworth: The Hop Cycle Introduction tells the historic story of the uses and properties of the hop, which has been used for centuries to provide one of the main flavourings for beer. However, are you aware that a multitude of different types or cultivars of this valued plant are grown to give a range of aromas and intensity? Sparsholt College will explain all in this exhibit, which features two garden areas: one planted with species that make or flavour drinks, and the other a pub garden to in which to relax and enjoy. Cooking from compost to the kitchen In this exhibit by Miracle-Gro, schoolchildren will grow a wide range of food plants and display them in an attractive kitchen garden at the show. This aims to highlight that growing food at school and at home will provide healthy, nutritious vegetables, fruit and edible flowers that will encourage everyone to eat ‘5-a-day’and thereby reduce UK obesity. A celebration of soil To mark the International Year of Soil, the Science of Soil will celebrate the amazing nature of soil by demonstrating how plants
and other organisms work together to create this vital medium, which is so often overlooked. At the British Ecological Society’s exhibit, visitors will be able to interact with a range of soils to assess them, test their pH and examine how plants are adapted to particular soil types. Plants, Pathologists and Disease This exhibit from the Royal College of Pathologists will explore several plants and their use in treating or preventing human diseases, including tobacco plants used to prepare monoclonal antibodies to prevent HIV infection, Yew used to prepare Paclitaxel treatment for ovarian cancer, and eating fresh vegetables to prevent scurvy. Other highlights in the Discovery Zone include: Capel Manor College’s Stumpery themed gardens which aim to depict the wildlife, recycling and aesthetic benefits of stumpery features; and Religions, Education & Environment Programme (REEP), whose walkthrough exhibit encourages visitors to experience the garden through sensation display, demonstrating how horticulture can be a basis for many kinds of learning. The Gardens for Forests & Forests for Gardens exhibit by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) UK, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of forest conservation, will touch on the way in which forest elements (trees, forest plants, leaf mould, dead wood) can be incorporated into the garden, promoting sustainable forest management on a microscale.

Pets & Wildlife Birds of a Feather
L
ots of home building activity going on in the bird world. Most of our more common garden birds are busy either making homes or desperately feeding their young. It always amazes me the huge amount of effort that our little feathered friend put in - not just nest building but ensuring the next generation have at least a fair chance of success. Two of my nest boxes are being
Blue Tit
used this year, both by the acrobatic little Blue Tits. One of my favourite garden birds - The Long Tailed Tit often nest in bushes, brambles or thickets, which makes them difficult to find, the few I have found have all been in hawthorns, blackthorns or brambles. The nest is a domed structure with a small entrance hole near the top. They use moss, cobwebs and hair, finished off with lichen. The cobwebs are used
Long Tailed Tit
to stick the nest to nearby branches and twigs, this allows the nest to stretch slightly, handy in windy weather. The nest is very well camouflaged, which helps with the protection against predators. Sadly many are still destroyed by Corvids and squirrels. Do try and get out and about to get a feel of what nature has to offer.... Rye harbour Nature Reserve is a fabulous place to start.
