Heathfield Feature The Heathfield Show The Largest Agricultural Show in the South East Saturday 28th May 2016 This year’s Heathfield Show will be the 69th one day agricultural show held in Heathfield. It is a celebration of all that’s good about The Weald and surrounding areas. From Rye to Lewes, Eastbourne to Mayfield, visitors flock to see what’s great about the rural area in which we live. Using their buckets and arms they can position themselves into arches and will pirouette around the Main ring to music. This display needs to be seen to be believed, position yourselves around the ring early to get the best view. The process of selecting local start-up businesses to take the opportunity of a free pitch at the Show in the New Enterprise Zone has been completed. 10 companies have been selected, amidst fierce competition. Fi Mehra Designs: ‘’I have been designing and making jewellery

for the last 25 years. I trained at the Birmingham school of jewellery, my career started in trade workshops, and I then decided to branch out on my own. I have recently relocated from Wiltshire to East Sussex and have designed some new ranges inspired my new surroundings, such as the Seashell and Boat ranges. I use Silver, gold, precious and semi-precious stones in my work and love to experiment with different textures and finishes on the metals. More recently I have been using rough diamonds and opals in some of my new ranges and am introducing a lot more gold into my designs. I attend trade shows across the country and have been exhibiting at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate for over 10 years and have just returned from another successful show. My next trade show is at the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, it will be my first time exhibiting at this show and I am really looking forward to it. A lot of my customers are based in the North of the country and Scotland, so I am looking forward to exploring Sussex to find some galleries and jewellery shops in the area.’’

Fall in love with Brazil with Southern Cross Travel

O

ften referred to as the Marvellous City, Rio de Janeiro is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and beautiful setting. With verdant forest enveloping the hills that line the Atlantic Ocean, pristine white-sand beaches and a fascinating melting-pot of cultures, Rio holds a unique draw for visitors from the world over. Attractions in Rio include some of the best views in the world from the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer and the stunning Sugarloaf Mountain, reached by cable car (as featured in James Bond’s Moonraker). Pass a sun-filled day soaking up the Carioca culture on world-famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and fall in love with a Cidade Maravilhosa. Iguazú Falls are one of Brazil’s most impressive natural attractions. Located on the triple border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, you can easily combine these countries and the diverse attractions each has to offer. The Falls comprise up to 275 separate waterfalls in a seemingly endless horseshoe, right in the heart of the jungle, and are truly a spectacle to behold. On a visit to the Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls, you will have the opportunity to get close to one of the largest sections of

the waterfalls – don’t forget a plastic poncho to keep dry! If you also choose to visit the Argentinean side, be prepared for breath-taking panoramas and magnificent scenery. Brazil is home to the Amazon Rainforest, one of the largest rainforests in the world. 51st Annual Traction Engine Rally Sat 4th and Sun 5th June 2016 Since the late 1800’s Claude Jessett’s family lived in Hadlow Down and after Claude married Joyce nearly sixty years ago they spent all their married life in the family home at Tinkers Park. Claude had an interest in all things mechanical and acquired his first traction engine during the Second World War. The engine remains part of the collection, and played no small part in inspiring Claude and Joyce to hold their first steam rally in 1966. Since then there has been an unbroken line of fifty annual Steam Rallies, each one providing a chance to see a fascinating range of exhibits, from the smallest stationary engine driving a water pump, to a huge traction engine designed for ploughing fields. With steam rollers, tractors, cars and motorbikes being just some of the exhibits on show this year’s rally promises to be a wonderful occasion for adults and children alike. The famous Jessett collection of mechanical musical instruments will be in operation, as will the “Great Bush Railway”. Pause to watch the steam engine events while enjoying some hot or cold food along with a pint of Harveys from the beer tent. The Harris family’s traditional fairground has been involved since the first rally and their rides are sure to be a hit with everyone. Then it’s on to the stalls, with all manner of items for sale, from autojumble and tools to books and plants. Right from the start the rally has been in aid of Cancer Research UK and this year is no exception. For more information please visit www.tinkerspark.com

Brian May Brian is passionate about stereo photography, a Victorian fad in which two flat images are fused in a special viewer to produce a scene in 3D. His new book ‘Crinoline: Fashion’s Most Magnificent Disaster’, which is out now, is accompanied by his patent 3D viewer called the OWL. It allows readers to see the Victorian-era illustrations included in the book in another dimension.

A

compelling, visually striking 3-D exploration of one of fashion’s most disastrous yet most celebrated garments, the Crinoline, featuring contributions from Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes has been published to coincide with the V&A’s highly anticipated exhibition, Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear. (Running until Sunday 12 March 2017). A crinoline is a stiffened or structured petticoat designed to hold out a woman’s skirt, popular at various times since the mid-19th century. Originally, crinoline described a stiff fabric made of horsehair (“crin”) and cotton or linen which was used to make underskirts and as a dress lining. What’s On Magazine went along to the Sands Films Studio in London to meet Brian for this exclusive feature and to find out more about his new book.

Brian, how did the book come about? Stereo photography goes right back to my childhood. When I was about 11 years old, you would get toys in cereal packets—it’s a great shame that kids don’t have that pleasure today—and in Weetabix packets they gave away little stereo cards. I sent off my one and sixpence to get the viewer, and it arrived in the post. I put my card in the viewer and suddenly I felt like I could walk through the window and touch the picture of the hippopotamus. I thought, why do people insist on having flat pictures when you can take pictures that have real depth? I remember so well the magic and joy of that moment and it has stayed with me all my life. Brian took his sterio camera with him on many of the Queen tours and he told us that he’ll soon be producing a Queen-in-3D book, with all the pictures of Freddie and the band “hopefully by Christmas”, he tells us.

This book is the fourth published by Brian May’s ‘London Stereoscopic Company’ and is based on his enormous collection. Since the beautiful original mahogany and brass viewers now cost a fortune at auction, each volume also includes the plastic viewers he had designed and manufactured to allow others to share his passion. Can you tell us about how the stereoscopy and the crinolines work together in the book. You have two incredibly explosive phenomena happening at once in Victorian Society, on the one hand they get to see photography for the first time ever, not only photography but 3D photography which that they can take home to their own drawing rooms and they can experience the world through their stereoscopes. On the other hand you have this incredible thing called ‘Crinoline’ which is giving ladies more and more space around them. You have to understand that, previously a woman had no status and this thing called crinoline started to give women a presence. When a woman walked into a room with Crinoline around her, people had to take notice, they had to give her space. For me the initial passion was stereoscopy because all these wonderful images of Crinolines are in glorious 3D and you can enjoy them. Gradually I realised the importance of what we were looking at through the stereoscopes and it became the inspiration to design my own stereoscope. I think VR (Virtual Reality) will really make a big impact in the next few years but it is essentially stereoscopy, it’s 3D imaging. You really feel like you could walk in and touch these people in the book and talk to them about their Crinoline dreams and that is what the book is, it’s Crinoline dreams. I was thrilled that that Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes wanted to contribute to the book. I guess I thought that maybe what we were doing wouldn’t be big enough for them and they wouldn’t want to be bothered, but they were very enthusiastic. I am also very thankful that the V&A has collaborated with us, and it’s proved to us, more than anything, that crinoline is still alive. We now have some young designers who have also come in contributing to this exhibition with their new designs. I hope the book will show how amazing and beautiful these things are. Many of the images mock the women having to be helped into their huge skirts

by circles of servants, and then getting stuck in doors or blown off their feet when they ventured out, or being forced to shed the crinolines before boarding a horsedrawn omnibus, or lift them up to cope with steps, revealing an expanse of ankle. However, many Victorian women loved the new fashion, which was lighter and more comfortable than the previous layers of petticoats, and made them feel more powerful, literally taking up more space in the world. My wife, (Anita Dobson) and daughter Emily, who modelled replica Victorian outfits said they felt and moved differently in the bell-like gowns.” ***** The voluminous crinoline underskirt was immensely popular between the years of 1856 to 1867, but was by its very nature severely impractical: a strong gust of wind would blow the dress up exposing the woman’s legs and undergarments; worse still, the crinolines were cumbersome, caused accidents and proved to be a serious fire hazard. As the shapes of crinoline garments grew more and more extreme, artists were inspired to capture the absurdities and misfortunes of the wearers through stereo photos, as well as in cartoons and drawings. Just as Crinoline came into fashion, the stereoscope – the equivalent of TV and Film for the Victorians – became a huge craze. Stereo photographers capitalized on the ridiculous spectacle of the women in crinolines, giving impoverished Victorian husbands some consolation in laughter. Although the hoops and inflatable frames disappeared, this wonderful humorous imagery produced during the Crinoline decade has lasted intact over the centuries – and is rediscovered in this book. The London Stereoscopic company, reborn in the 21st Century, explores “fashion’s most magnificent disaster” in the form of this delightful, lavish coffee table book, containing high quality reproductions of the original stereo images from the period. Brian May and Denis Pellerin have spent decades collecting and digitally restoring the stereo cards that are published here. Viewing the result through the supplied OWL stereoscope, readers will thrill to the magical three-dimensional realism of these scenes, just as the Victorians did. Crinoline – the book – begins with the emergence of the steel petticoat and the initial onset of the “Crinoline Age”, and then takes the reader on a fascinating visual journey, including a wealth of colourful

3-D imagery, to the historical moment when women began to protest against the “cage” and it was eventually phased out. However, contemporary designers such as the late Alexander McQueen, Zandra Rhodes and Vivienne Westwood have reintroduced the crinoline to the catwalk, bringing the dramatic garment of the 19th century all the way into the 21st century with a modern twist. Dame Vivienne Westwood says: “The crinoline idea had been with me for quite some time before I developed it into a collection. I wanted to save experimenting with the crinoline for a rainy day, so to speak…. The first time I ever saw a crinoline was in the ballet Petruschka and I was immediately drawn to it. The mini crinoline encourages you to walk with a certain swing and it swiggles, which I also like.”

ABOUT THE IMPRINT AND THE HISTORY OF THE LONDON STEREOSCOPIC COMPANY Some time in 1854 ‘The London Stereoscope Company’ was born. Their business was selling stereo views and viewers to the public, and they were leaders in a boom – a craze which swept England, Europe, and eventually the United States too, of stereo photographs of every conceivable subject, which, viewed by means of a stereoscope, presented scenes in life-like three dimensions. In a world which had never experienced Television, the Movies, or the Internet, this was a major sensation. In February 1856, The London Stereoscopic Company (LSC) advertised, in the Photographic Journal, ‘The largest collection in Europe, upwards of 10,000’ stereo views. BRIAN MAY’S introduction to stereoscopy was as a child, finding 3-D cards in his breakfast cereal. Brian, discovering that he could free-view them without the viewer too, was entranced, and quickly figured out how to make his own stereo views, and was hooked for life. Scouring Portobello Road market for stereoscopic items some years later, Brian discovered the intriguing Diableries cards, which stirred a special passion which was to lead to the Diableries book 40 years later. While studying Astronomy at Imperial College, Brian became a regular viewer at Christie’s photographic auctions, at the time a rich source of hitherto unknown stereo views from the 1850s onwards.

In 2008 Brian realised his dream of recreating The London Stereoscopic Company, its aim to bring the magic of true stereoscopy to the modern world. In order to share the magic of Victorian 3-D, Brian designed his own OWL stereoscope, which is now produced in large quantities. The OWL has become a new standard around the world in stereoscopic viewing. In 2011 Brian met a redoubtable French scholar, Denis Pellerin, (pictured with him below) one of theworld’s experts on French and English Photographic History. Their two passions connected immediately, and Denis became Brian’s curator, conservator, researcher, and co-author. Denis said the “disaster” of the title was also historically true: hundreds of women died as their huge skirts brushed against an open fire or a candle and burst into flames, or were blown into water or under the wheels of traffic. However, there were also stories of women who had fallen or thrown themselves from bridges and were parachuted gently down and kept afloat by their skirts. The London Stereoscopic Company is now restoring and republishing Victorian classic cards, as well as original stereoscopic works relating to Astronomy and unseen, historic ‘Queen’ (the Rock

BRIAN MAY’S OWL

Group) images. Finally the LSC completed the picture by entering into book publishing, with each new work accompanied by an OWL Stereoscope included in the package. The first three titles were: A Village Lost and Found (based on a celebrated series by TR Williams made around 1853). Diableries (the entire genre of 1860s French Devilments brought together for the first time). The Poor Man’s Picture Gallery (stereo views of famous paintings in the Tate Gallery). The London Stereoscopic Company is the ONLY publisher in the world dedicated exclusively to publishing stereoscopic

works. Their mission is to share the world’s greatest 3-D images, from Victorian times to the present day. BRIAN MAY’S OWL: Brian has created the definitive high-quality modern-day stereoscope; reminiscent of an Owl, he named it just that. Every book the LSC publishes comes with an Owl, and the illustrations in the book, reproduced by the highest resolution printing technology available will, through this device, delight you all just as they did in Victorian times. “A very special and wonderful book with enlightened research unveiling fascinating facts such as crinolines being considered an extremely dangerous form of clothing at one time. Great examples of 3-D pictures totally in keeping with its historical importance, complete with 3-D viewer.” Dame Zandra Rhodes “Crinolines and Stereoscopic photographs were twin sensations of the mid 19th century. We, the authors of this book, decided it was fitting that they should be reunited in the 21st century, and their intimate association recognised at last. This book explores the history of crinoline ‘in depth’. It’s also an attempt to fathom the unique appeal of this dangerous fashion, which, surprisingly, is alive and

well in the present day, and its place in popular culture.” Brian May & Denis Pellerin Crinoline: Fashion’s Most Magnificent Disaster, by Brian May & Denis Pellerin, published in hardback (with a slipcase and 3-D front cover, accompanied by Brian May’s patent 3-D viewer, the Owl) £50, available to buy from all good bookstores and online www.londonstereo.com

Floral archway to celebrate Queen’s 90th and immersive ‘Rose Tunnel’ Floral arches at Bull Ring and London Gate entrances will feature in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday

chosen to create the London Gate arch will be named in due course. The Bull Ring arch will be made using all British blooms donated by UK growers and will be installed with the help of design students from several UK colleges. As the Royal florist responsible for directing the horticultural elements at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and who holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment to HRH the Prince of Wales and HM The Queen, Shane is no stranger to Royal floral design and is looking forward to this new challenge.

This year, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) will celebrate the 90th birthday of HM The Queen with floral arches at both the Bull Ring and London Gate entrances to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (24 – 28 May), sponsored by M&G Investments.

The primary arch, by leading designer Shane Connolly, will span the iconic Bull Ring gate entrance, situated on the bank of the river Thames, while its sister arch will welcome visitors to the London Gate. The designer

Shane said “I’m honoured and delighted to have been asked to design this archway for HM The Queen’s Birthday and really want it to showcase the beauty and range of British grown plants and flowers and the skills of the British flower and plant growers. Having students of floral design to help install it will really be the icing on the cake. It will be the best of British Birthdays for HM The Queen!” Award-winning artist Joseph Massie provides another unique floral display for 2016. ‘Rosa’, a hanging installation beneath the Rock Bank restaurant, that connects Main Avenue and Ranalegh Way, will offer a sensory, immersive experience, and will feature over five thousand fresh rose blooms. Joseph, the British Floristry Association (BFA)

Young Florist of the Year in 2007, has won 17 national and international competitions for his work, including five RHS Gold medals and four Best in Show awards at RHS Chelsea, the youngest person ever to achieve such accolades. Speaking about the installation, Joseph said: “I’m so very excited to be returning to the show to unveil ‘Rosa’. RHS Chelsea has been such a huge part of my journey, and to be able to display my artwork on such a scale really is a very special experience indeed.” The installation (pictured left) will be formed of two lit pools at either end of the walkway, with rows of the finest preserved rose petals flowing towards the ceiling on a seemingly invisible thread, displaying a mix of warm summery pinks and soft apricot tones. As the two columns of petals rise, hanging full headed roses intertwine with them to create a fuller column of rose heads and petals at the tunnel’s peak. Hanging vertically from the ceiling, the roses will dry naturally over the course of the Show, changing in colour and texture over time. The five thousand rose petals used to create the artwork will be recycled at the end of the Show. Tickets to RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 are available to buy at rhs.org.uk/ flowershows.
