Torre Abbey Historic House re-opened, nine months ahead of schedule, on Saturday 27th July after a Phase II restoration programme. Come along and experience the romance and mystery of Torre Abbey, a beautiful historic house set in a glorious landscape. Torbay’s Mayor Gordon Oliver said: “Torre Abbey Historic House is a Jewel in the Bay’s Crown and it is wonderful to see it reopening after careful restoration. This beautiful building has been brought to life with state of the art technology depicting local history through the ages. “Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. “The restoration tells these stories but also other important local stories and milestones in history. The Abbey has something to offer everyone and it is wonderful to see how the past has been interpreted in modern ways.” Steve Parrock, CEO of Torbay Development Agency which was commissioned to oversee Phase II said: “This restoration phase marks a new era for Torre Abbey and will put this historic house and gardens on the map as a South Devon attraction. “The extensive restoration work included repairing and stabilising the roof structures, repairing the masonry and restoring lime stucco. It also included an impressive
interpretation project which commemorates a wealth of local history and heritage.” Torre Abbey has been a centre of religious and artistic expression and hospitality for over 800 years. There is so much to see with two Grade I listed buildings, four Grade II listed buildings, an historic garden and Palm House. Torre Abbey is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance. The restoration encapsulates all of its history with state of the art exhibitions and galleries which will amaze and intrigue. There are house family trails and children’s garden discovery backpacks which will help visitors discover an array of hidden mysteries. With its fine gatehouse, guest hall, tower and remarkable undercrofts, the Abbey is the best preserved example of a medieval monastery in Devon and Cornwall. It also has one of the five most complete early medieval tithe barns in England. There is so much to see, from intriguing medieval cloisters to the fascinating life of a Victorian family. Learn about all the fascinating inhabitants of Torre Abbey including the monastery canons and the Victorian Carys. There were also a number of famous visitors to the Abbey including Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson. The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it played an important role housing 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. With a wealth of exotic and exciting plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure, the perfect
setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Exuberant plantings of herbaceous perennials, roses and dahlias set in the formal 19th century landscape around the Abbey ruins. The heated glasshouses, containing tropical and desert plants, are a treat for the senses whatever the season. A new medieval children’s garden displays plants of a forgotten era. The Spanish Barn, the main House and Palm House are all currently used for functions, such as weddings and corporate hospitality. The project also includes the creation of new learning spaces, including a new educational activity built in the south-east wing, transforming opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and explore the history of the site. Visitors can browse around our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books. Torre Abbey Historic House will be open 10am to 5pm, Wednesdays to Sundays, with last admissions at 4pm. The main car park is situated 100 metres from the house behind the Riviera International Conference Centre. A discount is given on your entry ticket on presenting your car park ticket. An overflow car par can be found at Torre Valley Car Park on Walnut Road.

On the August Bank holiday weekend (the 24th & 25th) we have a huge two day event to be held at the Riviera Centre in the main Arena, Torquay: Prim and Proper Leisure & Lifestyle: Contemporary Gift Event. We’re Kim and Daniella, and we run Shoreline Events and the Prim and Proper Gift House. We have already had three successful “Prim and Proper” Events so far this year in the Torbay area and given the popularity of the events we started an online shop selling the type of gifts and products that can be purchased at our events, the online shop has grown so fast that we are now delighted to announce that we have a shop on Totnes high street.
This event is huge and we have lots planned with some really exciting exhibitors. We have Laura Ashley, Fat Face and Zatchels bags taking part in the fashion show. There are children’s entertainers, and activities, Health & Beauty, Zapcat Racing, Reach Outdoors (Adventure Company), O’Connor’s VW Campervans, Gift stalls, Knight rider’s Car – Kitt, Teign Diving Centre, The Perfume Garden, a massive summer BBQ and much, much more. We planned this event to coincide with the “Torbay Week”, as there will be absolutely loads going on in the bay, with the 200th Anniversary of the Torbay Regatta, Red Arrows, Anderton & Rowlands Fun Fair, the Riviera Eye, Fireworks the bay will be bustling. Whatever the weather there will be lots going on indoors and out. At all our events we always raise lots of money for a charity, this time we have chosen two very worthy causes. We are holding a silent auction of generous donations in aid of The Ryan Edwards Appeal. We will also be supporting Help For Heroes with a huge raffle and a stall with loads of goodies from the charity. We are both very passionate about the bay, and feel that there are so many wonderfully talented people and businesses in Devon, that will be able to showcase themselves at our event. We hope you can join us for what will be great days out in August.

beautifully crafted sailing boat, made from people’s wooden memorabilia will be visiting Torbay from the South East following a successful bid by Torbay Council to Arts Council England. The Lone Twin Boat Project is a living archive of people’s stories and lives, a 30ft vessel made from donated wooden items, and one of the major outcomes of last year’s Cultural Olympiad. From February to July 2011 the public, living in the South East, donated their wood to the project from pencil, piano and pine to the exotic zebrawood every piece had a story behind it. Donations arrived in their thousands, from the highly personal to pieces of national importance. All of these donations have now been used to build a state-of-the-art seafaring yacht named Collective Spirit.
28
Arts Council England has awarded Torbay Council £33,000 to sail Collective Spirit into Brixham for early August and then Torquay and Paignton as part of its ‘Art on the English Riviera’ project. There will be a range of free events arranged in each town to coincide with the boat’s arrival followed by a week’s sailing school for groups within the community. The boat will then head to the Spanish Barn, Torre Abbey, to form the centrepiece of a maritime exhibition being held in the barn from 8 September until 19 October. The Mayor of Torbay Gordon Oliver, said: “This is great news and another coup for Torbay which in recent years has helped to showcase some amazing artwork and cultural events. So whether you are 9 or 90 I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to visit
the Boat Project and find out about the inspirational stories that have helped to create it.” Cllr Dave Butt, Executive Lead for Culture and Arts and Regional Board Member for Arts Council England South West, said: “In the last few years Torbay has really gained a national reputation for hosting amazing exhibitions by both local and internationally renowned artists and this is right up there with the best. We really are developing into the cultural centre of the South-West. “As part of Art on the English Riviera we have organised a maritime themed exhibition in the Spanish Barn and so this is a great opportunity for us to bring the Collective Spirit to the Bay. Whether you are a budding artist or just want to be inspired I would urge everyone to come along and see the project for themselves and hear the amazing stories that it has to tell.

THE Nationally Registered Heritage passenger ship Fairmile – Torbay’s longest-operating original Torquay to Brixham ferry – has returned to service after an extensive £160,000 restoration refit. The newly restored historic World War Two heritage ship has just undergone her largest refit since the family-run Greenway Ferry Company saved her in 2009 from being decommissioned in Poole returning her back to service in Torbay where she had plied during war and peacetime – now in her 72nd year. The whole saloon was removed and 75 per cent of her deck replaced. There are new deck shelves, deck beams, deck, floors and two brand new watertight double sheaved bulkheads, plus new seating and two new bars. Will Ford, director of the Greenway Ferry Company, said: “As she defended our country, we are now defending her from the
passage of time through our own financial commitment and with a team of enthusiasts, we know how much this ship is loved in Torbay and have done our bit to ensure that she can be enjoyed by all now and in the future as the bays longest serving passenger ship.” “This will be the first time for her to be seen as she would have looked during her operation period in the Royal Navy as much as health and safety will allow. Her newly restored medical bay on the top deck now dispenses alcoholic medicine in the midst of stretchers from the new 1940’s bar and we have reopened the Ward Room on the lower deck which has been completely refurbished with beautiful leather seats housing the ships original blueprints from WWII . This refit has not just been for the ship but also for passenger comfort. The newly commissioned purpose built porthole awning looks fabulous on
the deck and passengers can now sit in pure comfort on the top and bottom deck and the seats can be folded away to create a massive dance floor for private charters and party boats. Carrying capacity has been increased and passenger facilities modified even to the point of frothy coffee machines, draught beers and ice cream. Our investment into Fairmile and the bay is proof of our commitment to this wonderful area and tourism as a whole not to mention a ship which is the last remaining type of her kind in passenger service from WWII. ” Greenway Ferry also operate services departing from Torquay and Brixham between the two towns for just £1 each way, SeaFari Wildlife Cruises and Agatha Christie Experiences to the National Trust property Greenway House,in addition to the wonderful 1940’s Vintage Bus which was the ex Mobile Library from TV show Heartbeat.

We’re looking forward to long sunny days, some chilled out lazing poolside and some storming flume action of course. Take a trip up to the top of the mighty tower to take on the Devil’s Drop. Don’t forget you can always use one of our wetsuits they’re free to hire (deposit required), if the good old British summer isn’t quite living up to expectations. You can have a fab time flumin’ the day away on the eight fantastic rides; tumbling tyre rides, twisting body slides and more. Great discounts when you come as a group of 10 or more and you can grab a great value Meal Deal to go with your fluming ticket – don’t forget you can buy all your tix on the website and dodge the queues. Don’t fancy the waterpark? Goodrington Sands is just brilliant for a day by the sea. The beach, with its Quality Coast Award, has super facilities and plenty of parking close by. Perfect for picnics, why not let the Sunrise Beach and Snack store take care of it all? The shop is also great for stocking up on seasidy bits too; nets, buckets, souvenirs and swimwear, you name it and you’ll pretty much find it there.
Want to make more of our view then come along to THE View at Goodrington, our daytime café transformed into an after waterpark hours restaurant and bar with the best view in town. Out on the terrace or tables inside (that weather again!) we offer an all you can eat pizza and pasta buffet plus great value meals that everyone loves. Join us for a meal, a snack or just a drink – we’ve got a super ice-cream dessert menu too.
Open every day through the season from 6pm ‘til late. Facebook has all the latest info so why not pop by the page facebook. com/splashdown quaywest or sign up to SplashMail on the website to get the latest news and special offers straight to your inbox, there are always fantastic fluming offers for the new season.
The waterpark offers 2 hour sessions or all-day entry (maybe restricted in high season) which allows you to flume and go as you please, as much as you like in one day. Call 01803 555550 for full opening schedule or see www.splashdownwater parks.co.uk

STRICTLY 12 – 17 YEAR OLDS ONLY • NO RE-ENTRY • SECURITY / SEARCH POLICY • WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARKFIELD
The Great Gorillas Project Follow the trail around the English Riviera & Exeter from 3rd August – 13th October. This year is Paignton Zoo Environmental Park’s 90th anniversary and we want to do more than celebrate. In those 90 years we have achieved great things in conservation and education and we want to use this landmark occasion to do even more. Gorillas are some of our closest relatives amongst the living primates and that’s why we have chosen them to help us mark this anniversary. Highly threatened in Africa, they are an integral part of the Zoo’s animal collection; we want to raise awareness of their plight in the wild. Great Gorillas is a world-class public art exhibition that everyone can enjoy. Thirty colourful, life-size gorilla sculptures can be seen in Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Babbacombe and Exeter for 10 weeks this summer, forming a trail around South Devon’s streets, parks and open spaces. You can also spot 20 small gorillas decorated by local schools. And there are one or two extra surprises along the way.
The gorillas are as wonderfully varied as you could imagine and have been uniquely designed and painted by some of the finest artists the region has to offer – we encourage you to try to see as many as you can. The maps on the following pages and our mobile site, www.greatgorillastrail.org.uk, will help you track them down – when you’ve spotted one, be sure to register you have by ‘checking in’. Anyone who checks in and spots all the gorillas will be entered into a draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Paignton Zoo’s (real) gorillas up close! So what are you waiting for? Get out now and see how many you can spot!

A major new event is coming to Paignton on September 7th to raise funds for Rowcroft Hospice. The Colour Rush, is the hottest, happiest, brightest new event in Devon. It starts with a 5K paint run, but the emphasis is firmly placed on fun. It doesn’t matter how fit you are or how old you are and there’s no prize for crossing the finishing line first. So if you want to run it, jog it or walk it, it’s up to you. The Colour Rush is about getting caked in powder paints, from headto-toe, so get your brightest whites on and prepare to be turned into a human rainbow. By taking part in the run, runners will also get access to the exclusive live Colour Rush after party at Paignton Green - a festival-style live music event with bands and acoustic acts performing
across two stages. The line up will include some rising national acts including Treetop Flyers, Lonely the Brave and headliners, UK rock band, We Are The Ocean who are currently touring across Europe with Muse. Entry to the 5km run and exclusive live music after party is just £25 and tickets can be purchased online at www.thecolourrush. co.uk. By taking part in the Colour Rush, you’ll also be supporting Rowcroft Hospice,
the only adult hospice serving the people of South Devon. Rowcroft provides specialist care to people aged 18 and over with progressive, life limiting illnesses. To keep up-to-date with all The Colour Rush news, band announcements and to see a short video of the hotly anticipated paint run, search ‘The Colour Rush’ on Facebook.
