The Australian Pink Floyd Exposed! Live @ Plymouth Pavilions HE SUNDAY TIMES described them as “the best tribute band in the world” and Floyd drummer Nick Mason has gone on record as saying that “they probably do Floyd better than we do”.

T

TRIBUTE band extraordinaire The Australian Pink Floyd Show, whose skill at their renditions of Floyd classics led to them being the band chosen by Floyd guitarist David Gilmour to play at his 50th birthday party, is touring the country again with an updated show. Their sound is uncannily like the original band and during a concert, if you close your eyes, you could easily believe that they were the originals. But it’s best not to close your eyes though, as like the band they so faithfully reproduce, they have a light show that is second to none, with not just lasers, but massive inflatables making their shows a treat for all the senses. It helps that all the band are Pink Floyd fans, and some of the backroom team behind the Aussie Floyd Show – or TAPFS as the name is usually shortened to – worked behind the scenes for Pink Floyd themselves! One such veteran is Front of House Engineer Colin Norfield, who is controlling the state-of-the-art sound and light system. The band is renowned for pushing the boundaries both sonically and visually and last year they introduced 3D visuals to augment the songs.

“They actually went very well,” says keyboard player and founder-member Jason Sawford. “OK, they were a bit of an experiment, but it was pretty successful. Definitely a ‘Floydy thing to do.” Jason, relaxing in Wroclaw, just before the Polish leg of the ‘Exposed In The Light’ tour (with the name taken from a line of the lyrics in the song ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ says. “We’ve just arrived here from the Czech Republic and so far the tour is going well. From Poland we go to France, Germany, Holland, Ireland and then the UK.” The band, which was originally formed in 1988 in Melbourne, still has two of the original members in Jason and guitarist/vocalist Steve Mac, explains that they constantly update the show. “Well, this year we have more video material with some psychedelic themes, a redesigned light show, the inflatables and quadraphonic ‘surround’ sound; all of which is controlled by Colin Norfield, who handled Pink Floyd’s ‘Division Bell’ tour. From humble beginnings in Australia, TAPFS has become a worldwide phenomenon, with ticket sales of over three million. Bassist Colin Wilson, who joined the band in 1992 states, “For us, of course, the music has always come first. We like to breathe life into some material that would otherwise not get heard.”

During last years’ tour, they did indeed cover some lesser known tracks including ‘Dogs’ from the ‘Animals’ album. “Yes,” agrees Jason, his once strong Australian accent now almost non-existent. “We’re still doing some older tunes, but a different selection exploring the psychedelic, space-rock side of Floyd.” “We are doing ‘Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun’ and a newer version of ‘Astronomy Domine’ and from ‘Animals’ we’ve got ‘Pigs’ and ‘Sheep’. “Also, we’ve got a few references to Syd Barratt (the genius behind the early Floyd whose reliance on drugs led to him being sensationally sacked by the band).” The boys from Oz are not forgetting the best-known songs though. “No, we are doing a fair selection from ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ with songs like ‘Time’, ‘Money’ and ‘Us and Them’ plus ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Within The Flesh’”. Also, for this tour, they have a special guest. Singer Lorelei McBroom will be joining the band on stage. Lorelei toured as a backing vocalist with Pink Floyd on their ‘Momentary Lapse of Reason’ and ‘Delicate Sound of Thunder’ tours. “It’s quite an honour to have Lorelei with us,” Jason tells me. “It makes for a spectacular performance of ‘Great Gig in the Sky’ and she has been telling us stories about Floyd.” There’s been a few new faces in TAPFS recently. “That’s right,” says Jason, “And they’ve all been doing very well.” “David Domminney Fowler on guitar in particular. He’s a great asset and also helps out behind the scenes.” Some of the venues on the tour are in theatres and some in arenas, but apparently the size of the venue doesn’t detract from the shows. “No,” asserts Jason, “We have a capable crew who can get as much of the show in as possible. All that may happen is that we might

"Make a date to see McFly on Sunday 25th March when they visit the Riviera International Centre as part of their Up Close And Personal UK tour. McFly's debut album, Room on the 3rd Floor, hit number one in the UK Album Chart in 2004 making them the youngest band ever to have an album debut at number one. The album produced a series of Top Five hits, including Five Colours in Her Hair, Obviously, That Girl and Room on the 3rd Floor.

not be able to fit all the inflatables in at some of the smaller venues.” He continues, “However, we should be able to get all the lights and lasers in – plus the smaller places are a bit more intimate.” “We try not to alter the show too much.” He reassures me. But what happens nest? They seem to have now out Floyded Floyd in almost every aspect of the show. “There’s always the problem of what to do next,” says Jason. “We could perhaps pay tribute to another album like we did with ‘Dark Side’ a few years ago; we could do different themes – say the Syd Barratt years et cetera.”

“Our plans vary from year to year, but for this year we are looking at doing some summer shows, plus we hope to do a lot more in America; we had a very successful tour there in 2011 and we are going back later this year.” “And we are taking footage during the tour and we hope to put together a documentary DVD.” The Australian Pink Floyd Show will be performing Pink Floyd’s classic songs, at the Plymouth Pavilions on Tuesday 27th March. Tickets are priced at £29.50 (subject to a booking fee) and are available from the Box Office and all the usual agencies. Written by Martin Hutchinson.

Almost 15 years ago from this edition The Beautiful South came to Westpoint Arena in Exeter. Other than Oasis they were without doubt the biggest band to play there. The Westcountry has always had a great affection for this group and as with many bands over the years things change and evolve and the next great chapter of this band has yet to be written, allow me to introduce to you “The South” After 20 years, ten studio albums, five greatest hits compilations, thirty-four chart singles, 15 million record sales worldwide and performing in front of millions of fans, when time was called on The Beautiful South in 2008, not everyone was ready to leave the party. Hemingway and Ali Wheeler were fellow mainstays from the band: keyboard wizard Damon Butcher and the potent horn section of Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson that brought so much to the live shows. Armed with a sensational back catalogue of hits, The South in concert are not to be missed and the band are on top form. On top of a slew of classic singles, the band are also working on some brand new material. ‘Song For Whoever’, ‘Perfect Ten’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don't Marry Her’, ‘You Keep It All In’, ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’, the list of hits is almost daunting and The South are bringing their music back to the nation. Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler (lead singers with The Beautiful South along with departed songwriter Paul Heaton) loved the songs and life on

the road too much to just muse on past glories, and so The South was formed. Now the band are delighted to announce an intimate series of headline shows across the UK in February and March 2012 - tickets are on sale now, priced from £18 - £22. The “Small Is Beautiful” tour is a great chance for lovers of this truly classic British Pop band to reconnect with the musicians and the music once again. If you loved the music of The Beautiful South first time around, then you’re in luck – The South offer a bona fide chance to hear some of the greatest ever Pop songs performed as they were intended to be, by those who played them in the first place.

Mafia Babies Live @ Pierpoint, Torquay

01803 299332

A bright crisp Sunday lunch time beckons and with great anticipation this edition’s local review is of the multi talented, highly acclaimed acoustic duo, The Mafia Babies! Mafia Babies are Christian Pitocco - Vocals Rhythm guitar and Jonathan Lee - Lead and Rhythm guitar, Logarythm Stompbox, and Backing Vocals. Over the years these guys have gained the reputation as being one of South Devon’s premier acts. I wasn’t going to look at this review as an opportunity to state the obvious but seeing these guys in a laid back different environment got me curious to see if they could rise to every occasion. As you can appreciate a Sunday afternoon set list is going to differ greatly from a jumping Saturday night. That is one of the real great advantages of acoustic music, there is a lot of versatility to be had but the right feel and song choices are essential not too dissimilar in painting a picture – light and shade and different moods very rarely work out of their comfort zone. In reality a quiet acoustic gig hunting for the mood is as ever challenging as entertaining a pub packed full of people. Also the softer more attentive songs make a band a lot more exposed and vulnerable, even to the most avid listener. The first thing that struck me was the sheer level of ability and talent that these guys have.

The set list was very well chosen and well delivered and effortlessly blended into the panoramic views this venue has to offer. Classics like Rod Stewarts ‘Handbags & Gladrags’ and Newton Faulkners ‘People Should Smile More’ gently filled the room. They also did fantastic versions of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Heard it through the Grapevine’ and Al Greens ‘Let’s Stay Together’. The set was very played down, very methodical and very relaxed which just goes to show their versatility. Capturing the art to create music to complement the moment is an incredibly difficult thing to do yet these guys delivered exactly what was needed effortlessly. The singing and harmonies were soulful yet powerful and the playing was to a level very few local musicians seldom do achieve. For any local musicians aspiring to get to their level it wouldn’t do any harm in watching how these guys just melt into a collage of meaningful sound. The Mafia Babies are one of the most hard working acoustic duos around in the South Devon area. They have been playing together for the past 5 years and they are available for pub gigs, private parties, weddings and in short whatever occasion you would like! I would highly recommend these guys if you appreciate a high calibre of music and also equally to any aspiring musicians who want to up their game! Please have a look at the listings pages at the back of the magazine all their gigs throughout February and March. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Jamie Sinclair

LOCAL entertainment NEWS We’ve heard through the grapevine that local radio presenter John Hogarth is set to digitally release his debut novel within the next couple of weeks. He was being very closed-lipped about it when we caught up with him, only letting on that the story was set in Torquay and involves a very brutal murderer who kills his victims for a very unusual reason. According to other sources, he has had a big ‘thumbs up’ from several bestselling authors and is very excited about the project which has apparently been three years in the making. There is already a huge buzz about this book on Facebook and Twitter and John described the book as a ‘fast-paced thriller.’ The Frequency Of Murder will be available through Amazon, Kindle, iPad, iPhone, Nook, Ingram, Barnes and Noble and many more. We look forward to reading it especially after taking a look at the front cover which arrived in our inbox. The full announcement of release will be made on Palm 105.5 very soon. We find this very exciting news for South Devon especially the English Riviera as we are no stranger here

to some of the most prolific renowned authors in the world, Agatha Christie and Oscar Wilde, just to name a couple. Will John follow in their footsteps - this remains to be seen but with every great journey you have to start at the beginning. When the book is released we will do an exclusive interview with John and find out more about his desire to become a recognised author.

Wishbone Ash

- No Easy Road

Thursday, 15 March 2012 • 8.00pm With millions of album sales and concert attendances worldwide, Wishbone Ash’s heritage as one of the most enduring and best loved British rock acts is assured. Wishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody

Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music's best loved works and influence numerous successful bands. Wishbone Ash would become synonymous with high quality guitardriven melodic rock music. Over four decades later, the enduring music of the classic marks of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Martin Turner continues to perform the band’s best loved works with his current line-up. With all the GREAT HITS: Putting On the Style, Rock Island Line, Pick a bale of Cotton, Have a drink on me! and many more. Peter began in the entertainment business at the age of five at the Barbara Speak Stage School in London. After this he was educated by his father Lonnie Donegan, M.B.E. Once Peter turned eighteen, he was invited to join the Lonnie Donegan Band, performing as keyboard player. Peter spent two years in the band where he was able to learn hands on from the experience of his father Lonnie and during that time he also worked with Van Morrison. He has gone on to appear with a kaleidoscope of well known artistes including

Chas 'n' Dave, Billy Bragg, Rolf Harris, Ralf McTell, The Barron Nights, Rick Wakeman, Mark Knopfler, Joe Brown, Roger Daltry, Joe Cocker, Chris Barber, Bruce Welch and Chris Farlow. Now, during this special solo concert hosted by BBC Radio’s Paul Harris, Peter will be playing a mixture of material that Lonnie played but in Peter’s own style and new material written by Peter. There will also be a chance for audience questions as Peter tells never before heard stories of life with his legendary father behind the scenes in showbiz. Come along and join in with all the great songs, and many more. This is terrific entertainment for all ages.

Each year the 'cast' of the show changes and once again this 5th UK tour provides a wonderful and exciting array of musical talent with loads of potential for great on-stage interaction between these very different stylists

Since the first UK tour (2007) a dozen or so great guitarists, many of whom have been new to the UK, have made an impression here and gathered numerous new fans and friends. "Probably the most quintessentially English pop voice of its generation" THE TIMES Nobody sings like Colin Blunstone, the mild mannered man from St.Albans, who became one of Britain's most respected and popular vocalists. Lead singer with The Zombies his distinctive voice manages to be both sweetly angelic and deceptively strong and was a key element of the bands sound. Now Colin takes a short break from the iconic Zombies to tour with his fabulous solo band featuring songs from his fifty year musical career from "She's Not There" with The Zombies, to solo hits "I Don't Believe In Miracles" and "Say You Don't Mind" and on to "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" with Dave Stewart and the unforgettable "Old and Wise" with the Alan Parsons Project. "Colin Blunstone's voice is one of the greatest British vocal sounds of the 20th. Century" SIR TIM RICE, THE EVENING STANDARD Several slightly more obscure tracks will be played live for the first time along with a selection from his brand new album now being recorded under the working title of "On The Air Tonight". Pete Billington leads the solo band on keyboards (Jamie Cullum, Alison Moyet and Kid Creol) with Chris Childs on bass (Thunder, Go West, Beverly Craven), Pat Illingworth on Drums (Dave Stewart, Jeff Berlin, Hugh Masekela) and Tom Toomey on guitar (Zombies, Toomey Swarbrick). "Colin Blunstone's solo oeuvre seems more relevant today BILLBOARD than ever, by turns breathy, ethereal and operatic"
