Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. A clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts’ Choice to discover many hidden mysteries. Torre Abbey comprises two Grade I listed buildings, four Grade II listed buildings, an historic garden and palm house, and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance. It has been a centre of religious and artistic expression and hospitality for over 800 years. The house has a floor area of nearly 600 square metres, divided into 122 rooms, on twenty levels with 265 individual steps. With its fine gatehouse, guest hall, tower and remarkable undercrofts, the Abbey is the best preserved example of a medieval monastery in Devon and Cornwall. It also has one of the five most complete early medieval tithe barns in England. Torre Abbey was constructed in 1196 as a monastery for Premonstratensian canons and grew to be their richest monastery in England. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1539, the church was demolished and the west and south ranges were adapted for use as a country house. From 1662 to 1930, Torre Abbey was home to the Cary family. A quiet family of country landowners, the Cary family were Catholics and, at a time when Catholicism had to be kept a secret, they stowed away a priest in an attic chapel. They built the present chapel, which dates from the late 18th century, when Catholic worship was legalised. Although the Cary family had previously lived here in style, from 1840 they fell on hard times and could no longer keep the Abbey in good repair. In 1930 the family sold the property to the local Council, who turned it into an art gallery with a hospitality suite for the mayor in the south-east wing. The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it housed 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. The Barn is currently used for functions, such as weddings, and exhibitions. Torre Abbey Historic House is an accredited museum owned by Torbay Council with one of the largest art collection in the South West. This includes a large art collection which is rich in 19th century paintings and sculptures. Browse the shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events.

Carl Palmer is delighted to announce that he is returning to live concert action in the UK with ELP Legacy, with a series of 12 headline shows across the UK in February / March 2014 - tickets are on sale now. He will also release his new DVD, entitled “The Decade”. The tour is named after Carl’s new art collection, see www.carlpalmerart.com. Using state of the art technology, Carl is creating incredible artworks by harnessing the kinetic energy that underpins his playing; truly it is Rhythm On Canvas. He has already made his Los Angeles debut, with a show at Mr. Musichead, and the response was incredible. Carl Palmer is the dynamic drummer and percussionist whose famously technical and [initially] Jazz infused style can be heard on some of the landmark recordings in British Rock. He worked with the biggest names in the business and his versatility helped define what we understand by Progressive Rock and becoming known as the “Drummer’s Drummer”. He picked up the ‘Virtuoso’ award at the 2012 inaugural Prog Awards. Cutting his teeth with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Palmer then formed a new band, Atomic Rooster. He hit the big time with his subsequent teaming up with 18
Greg Lake and Keith Emerson, which resulted in the global mega-group ELP. The band recorded a series of albums which are still regarded as touchstones for Progressive Rock. They picked up 9 gold sales awards in the UK alone.
After ELP went their separate ways, Carl Palmer continued his incredible trajectory by cofounding Asia, the massively successful supergroup, who remain active.

Following on from their enormously successful 2013 dates, this even bigger UK tour will see the band bringing their meticulously crafted show to an ever-growing audience. Founder member Jason Sawford said, “We cannot wait to start the ‘Set The Controls’ tour, the UK audiences are always brilliant.” Bassist Colin Wilson added, “This tour will take the band the length and breadth of the UK. We’re looking forward to meeting up with the Aussie Floyd fans again and, of course, playing the amazing music of Pink Floyd.” The Australian Pink Floyd Show are much more than a tribute to the great music of Pink Floyd, and were described by The Times as “the gold standard”. The band attempt to capture and convey the spirit as well as the sound, and slavish attention is lavished upon their jawdropping visuals and effects. Aussie Floyd, who have sold over three million concert tickets in their own right, are much loved for their near note perfect performances which remain true to the original. Their loving recreation of the magic of Pink Floyd’s oeuvre is unmissable. Sunday Times ‘Culture’ said, “The Aussie Floyd delighted the crowd with a meticulously crafted performance, expensively staged with bright lights, lasers, and, yes, inflatables.” The Birmingham Mail added, “I’d heard that the Aussie Floyd were one of the best tribute acts in the business, but I really wasn’t prepared for how good they actually were”.

“Written in the Stars” Exclusive interview with Martin Turner founder member of Wishbone Ash
On a bright crisp January Monday afternoon at the Grand hotel Torquay the flamboyant and founder member of Wishbone Ash Martin Turner, kindly joins me for an insight into the past, the present and the future. Since the creation of one of the most influential bands in British rock history, Wishbone Ash where formed in this very town in 1969. Martin having only grown up literally a few miles from here the venue couldn’t have been more perfect. The Grand has a magical vibe to it; Agatha Christie spent her honeymoon here and she was an avid admirer, with majestic views over the English Riviera the elegant Victorian architecture and Art Deco interior should provoke the perfect atmosphere to indulge in rock history. The Rolling Stones have also frequented this establishment, on the odd occasion so ironically I’m calling on the vibes of the greatest writer of all time as well as one of the biggest bands of all eternity! Could I ask for anymore ambiance for the perfect setting and hopefully get an insight into rock history. JS Martin what are your recollections and thoughts on the West Country growing up? MT
I grew up in Torquay or Torbania as I have humorously recently heard it described. I had a fantastic childhood in Torquay – out in the fields overlooking the Bay, wondering about, close to nature, picking up mushrooms and just enjoying life, spending time with my two brothers, Glen and Kim. It was fantastic – I learnt a lot about nature whether it was hunting down where birds where nesting or picking violets in the spring and putting them in bunches thinking I could sell them to sweet old ladies. I had a great childhood, with such happy memories.
JS When did you realise you would end up forging a career in playing music? MT I had a good feel for it – for instance my Dad used to play a lot of classical music and I would sit with him listening to Mozart, Chicoski and Shostakovich, for hours on end – the light would fade away and it was 22
very moody. I think that’s unusual for a young lad – not too many kids would be happy to do that and I really enjoyed the feelings and pictures that fuelled my imagination. So I had a really strong affiliation with music from my very earliest memories.
JS
How did that then transpire and end up with you playing a bass guitar?
MT
When I was young my mum put me into the Church choir in Shiphay “St John the Baptist” (“Shiphay “ The name is said to be from Saxon origin, meaning “sheep enclosure” ) and I really enjoyed the singing there, there were other aspects of the religious thing that I was a little bit iffy about at the time but I enjoyed the music immensely and I ended up becoming head choir boy. Old ladies used to weep when they saw me singing solo – this dear little blonde pretty boy but underneath my cassock & robes were faded jeans, cowboy boots and old shirt. I was two things – on the surface, I was squeaky clean and very sweet and then there was the other side where Martin was a bit of
a hooligan, making bombs and getting into mischief as you did in those days when you lived outdoors – there was no ‘you can’t let you kid go outside in case something terrible might happen’ that didn’t exist in those days – we were outdoor kids!
JS What is your earliest recollection of actually holding a musical instrument? MT I used to deliver papers when I was about 14 and at the end of my paper round I used to go and see a mate of mine at school – Micky Prinn who is sadly no longer with us now, Micky lived in virtually the last house on my paper round and I knew that he had a guitar so I used to pop into his place and if he wasn’t busy we used to sit down and he would play his guitar and I played his brothers which only had five strings – so it was midway between a base and a six string guitar. We did that once, twice a week over a period of a year and he taught me everything he knew so I became fairly decent on the guitar even at that age. Glenn is also a very accomplished guitarist and Kim was a great drummer, we all had the music in us.
JS The late 60s early 70s was one of the most transitional times music had ever known, What artists around that time would inspire you the most? MT
The Beatles, The Who and Led Zeppelin, were a huge thing for me – I loved them all and we wanted to be part of it and contribute to it. But it was more of a generational thing because kids like me were post war – I was born in 47 and the 50’s were so miserable, grey and boring for everyone –everything was being re-built and it was such a tedious journey through the 50’s that the minute the 60’s hit and for my generation the teenage process started to happen – you got those stirrings inside you – we re-acted very severely against the greyness of the previous decade that had proceeded and we wanted everything to be colourful and open up including sex, drugs and rock and roll, we wanted everything. We wanted to pitch full-scale into changing the world into how we wanted it to be because the crap that we had already lived through was so boring. So there was an absolute explosion in the 60’s as my generation hit those years which produced The Beatles, The Shadows you name it we had it, music was everything. My brother Glenn and I had a band – The Empty Vessels where Steve Upton came on board in 1966 and we regularly played all over the West Country
JS It must have been great supporting The Who at Torquay Town Hall in 1966 – any other early memorable gigs? MT
Yeah that one would stick out a mile – there were a load of them. The Who were great, the promoter was Lionel Digby aka “LMD Entertainments” we played with the Hunters and The Staggerlees that night, it was packed, hot and sweaty, you know the kind of gig, it was about, Sat August 20th 1966, I believe!
JS What was it like putting the songs together for the first album? MT
We were very unusual in that although we were a British band we were managed by an American –Miles Copeland – who was absolutely convinced that we should get out to America and play out there as well. We ended up with Derek Lawrence as our producer. Richie Blackmore had seen us on a gig where we were supporting Deep Purple and he recommended us to Derek – a mate of his had just been made head of ANR at MCA Universal in Los Angeles and was looking to sign bands so he got us a record deal and produced our first three albums – Wishbone Ash, Pilgrimage and Argos. During that time the band went from no-where to a rip roaring success and album of the year.
JS Were the guitar harmonies that Wishbone are so recognised for pre-planned or did you just find that playing together in unison lifted the whole thing? MT It was something that I intended to do. It was very clear – I wanted to play rock music with a message – not chirpy chirpy cheep cheep – something with meaning and for me that means usually going into a trance virtually and writing music that I don’t even understand myself. I knew that I wanted to do that but that it must have strong melodic content – obviously the harmony guitars because I had been brought up on that kind of music I guess –particularly religious music and classical music. In the early days of the band all the guitar harmonies, which became the bands trademark sound, were all composed largely by me singing a vocal line and then translating it onto guitar and then you would sing a harmony to the other guitar player and he would translate that onto guitar. Now if you did that as a harmony vocal it didn’t sound nearly as powerful as a harmony guitar with all the bends and the sex in it. So I recognised immediately that that gave us a unique and distinct sound.
23
JS What was the inspiration behind the song Blowing Free and who is the girl with the golden brown hair?
JS
MT The music for “Blowin’ Free” I had a vague idea how it was going to work and I was inspired by a little piece of guitar work that was in a song called “Children of the Future” 1968 by Steve Miller– The Lyrics I had written in about 77/78 and back then Torquay used to take in a mass of foreign students in the summer from Denmark and Sweden and I had had a succession of Swedish girlfriends over the years – one of whom was called “Annaleena Nordstom” and she was a really healthy fit girl – tall, skinny, played tennis, rode horses and loved the country side – she was squeaky clean, beautiful teeth and hair and I was a kind of rock n roll rat who stayed up late in clubs – how on earth we were attracted to each other I do not know to this day. She could hardly speak any English and I certainly couldn’t speak any Swedish and we just hung out together like a couple of furry animals – it was very innocent. I can remember being on Dartmoor with her in my band van and she and I were just sitting in the front of the van watching a thunder storm roll through way down over the hill and the atmosphere was really moody and dynamic and stuff and I can remember turning to her and saying can I kiss you? She replied in her broken English – “you can try”!!! Hence the lyrics in the song “She was far away “I found it hard to reach her” “She told me you can try” And that’s who the song is about, this beautiful Swedish girl that I was really attracted to.
MT Some people are not very happy travelling, missing there comfort zone and constantly being confronted with different cultures and foods and strange places but I love all that and thrive on it. I have always loved seeing new parts of the world whether it is Belgrade or Tokyo or South America. I really enjoy that – there are lots of places that I haven’t been yet like Africa, Argentina, Russia and places that I would love to go and visit but I am hoping that maybe we can go and get some gigs there eventually.
JS
When you are not making music what kind of things do you like to do?
MT I get into all kinds of stuff –
for instance at the moment I have become very intrigued with astronomy and the technological advances and deep space probes that are going up and that sort of thing. Then I will go to the other extreme and find myself down at Plough Lane in Wimbledon stepping back into the 1960s to watch stock car racing – bangers smashing into each other and the smell of petrol and burning rubber and loving it because it is chaos. Other things like Boxing and Football – Chelsea is my team.
24
What are your thoughts on touring? Do you like touring? Could you live your life on the road?
JS
If the opportunity arose over the next few years for you to do a world tour with your back catalogue is that something that you would consider?
MT
Absolutely I would be more than happy to do that. Of course there are a lot of logistics to consider and at the moment the band are playing really well, we have just got a new drummer so it’s all systems go, we are rehearsing next week, we have just come back from a mini tour of Germany, which was great, we played with “Barclay James Harvest” and “Manfred Mans Earth band” our original sound man “Hobbit” Mark Emery was with us, we sounded great and touring will feature a major part in our future.
JS
I have seen Wishbone Ash feature on the same bill as Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Emmerson, Lake and Palmer and a whole load more – was there any particular band or star that you really enjoyed playing with?
MT Joe Walsh – I was very fond of – we used to gig together when there were a three piece, James Gang. The James Gang was a rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1966. The band enjoyed moderate success with the singles “Funk 49” and “Walk Away”, and are perhaps best remembered as the first popular band to feature guitarist/vocalist Joe Walsh, later a member of The Eagles. Bob Marley was great, nice guy always very kind and his band was great as well.
JS
What does the future hold for Martin Turners Wishbone Ash. Are you going to tour with new material? A world tour perhaps?
MT We have a live album coming out soon called ‘The Garden Party’ which was recorded just over a year ago. It was a free concert for our hardcore supporters – we invited a lot of people to come along and actually Laurie and Ted both turned up and so did Steve Upton. It was a great day but there were a lot of problems with the recording, technical buzzes and stuff which I spent months trying to straighten out and finally it is finished an should be released pretty soon then we have to get into putting together a new album – some material that we have been working on already but I am not sure when that will be finished to be honest but its work in progress. JS
What does the future hold for you in music?
MT I don’t want to map out the future and say this is going to be happening because you just never know. The name of the next album and the tour is called “Written in the Stars” – which I am working on now and is just about ready to go and I believe that however cleverly that you plan your life that it is all mapped out and already written in the stars and it is going to happen whether you like it or not! So there you go, I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did, I found Martin to be relaxed with a calming sense of elegance which resonates all around him. Wishbone Ash played a major part in the evolution of rock history, with Genesis and Yes around at the same time pushing the boundaries of innovative music. Wishbone Ash were on the same parallel - not with keyboards but with guitar harmony’s, complex vocal harmony’s and a plethora of raw talent, which is very much alive in 2014…..Long may it continue, you can see Martin Turner performing the mastery of Wishbone Ash at Exeter Corn Exchange on March 23rd 2014. For more information on Martin Turner please visit www.wishboneash.co.uk and also Martin’s book ‘No Easy Road’ is on sale! For a longer version of this interview please visit our website.

Show home opening at Cavanna Homes’ Kings Field, Kingskerswell Cavanna Homes is putting the finishing touches to its latest show home which is due to open in the early spring at the company’s new Kings Field development in the Devon village of Kingskerswell. The Torquay-based homebuilder has reported a very high level of interest in Kings Field where several off-plan reservations have already been taken. Sales Manager Karen Heywood-Cann said: “Even though it’s still early days, we’ve had an excellent response to this development because we’re offering a really good selection of homes in a great village location. As well as a primary school, new play park, shops and other amenities, the village offers easy commuter access to Torquay, Newton Abbot and Exeter. I’d really encourage house hunters to come and visit the show home and see for themselves all that Kings Field has to offer.”
Kingskerswell Church
When complete, the 62 home development on the edge of Kingskerswell will offer a range of two, three and four bedroom homes, suitable for individuals, couples or families. Depending on the stage of construction, early purchasers will be able to choose from a selection of kitchen units, worktops, and bathroom wall tiles. Even though the property layouts vary across the development, the Cavanna ethos remains the same. Each energy efficient home provides functional living space and modern fixtures and fittings. The Fluder Special has been selected as the Kings Field show home and offers excellent family living space arranged over three floors. The ground floor is devoted to an open-plan kitchen leading to a dining / family area with a handy downstairs toilet, utility room and under-stairs cupboard space. On the first floor is a living room overlooking the rear garden with two bedrooms and a fully fitted modern family bathroom. On the top floor is the master bedroom with its own en-suite shower room.
Exeter
All properties are covered by a 10 year LABC Buildmark warranty and for further peace of mind; Cavanna Homes give two years of Customer Service Support. To register your interest in Kings Field, please visit www. cavannahomes.co.uk or telephone 01803 873017 or email kingsfield@cavannahomes.co.uk .
