All Night Long US superstar Lionel Richie to play Eden Sessions

Global legend Lionel Richie is the first superstar announcement for next year’s Eden Sessions with ASUS. The singersongwriter from Tuskegee Alabama, whose smash hits include Hello, Dancing on the Ceiling and All Night Long, will play at the home of the famous Biomes on Tuesday June 14, 2016, as part of his All The Hits world tour. This will be Lionel’s first ever headline show in the South West and his first UK show since his legendary performance at Glastonbury. With more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Lionel Richie is a global star and music icon with four Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Oscar to his name. Lionel said: “I had such a great time in the UK this year and I can’t wait to visit new places and meet new people. Performing at Glastonbury for the first time was such a thrill for me and given me an appetite to do new things in the UK. I know these shows are going to be very special.”

Eden Marketing Director Rita Broe said: “What a massive honour it is to announce that the legend Lionel Richie will headline at the Eden Sessions next summer! His 30 years of hits have been like a soundtrack to many of our lives. Hearing him perform those hits for the first time in Cornwall, against the backdrop of biomes, will be incredible – and what a way to start the Sessions season! Much dancing on the celling ahead!” The Eden Sessions enter their fifteenth year in 2016. Last year saw the legendary Elton John play two consecutive headline shows. The other 2015 Eden Sessions were headlined by Paolo Nutini, Paloma Faith, Motorhead and Ben Howard. Eden’s Inside Track club returns for 2016. Home to England’s highest waterfall, descending a staggering 220ft, Canonteign Falls is a breathtaking Devon attraction, and a wonderful day out for all the family. Canonteign Falls is a hidden gem and one of the most idyllic places to see and explore with children. Perfect for outdoor adventure, our children’s play area and children’s assault course will keep the little ones happy, and our lakeside café, snack bar and gift shop will ensure that your every need is catered for.

Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon. A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth ”, wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults and children. Well-marked pathways take you on three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages and abilities. Our Victorian fern garden at the top of the Falls is a magical hidden treasure of Victorian landscaping. We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour. Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, dragonflies and our pair of black swans, Dame Margot and Rudolph. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner in the old orchard where they busy away making delicious honey. Honey harvesting is done on site and our fresh honey is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area offers rock hold walls, a fireman`s pole and pull up ramps or children can go below deck and create a den. So gather up your treasure chests “me hearties” and let’s set sail! You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and other related items available from our shop. Café Our menu offers locally made filo pastry pies, homemade soups, ploughmans, freshly cut sandwiches and jacket potatoes: a wonderful feast for weary and hungry walkers! And why not enjoy a delicious latte or cappuccino made with freshly ground Italian coffee and a slice of one of our delicious homemade cakes or perhaps a traditional Devon Cream Tea after your walk? The Gift Shop at Canonteign is situated in the original farm buildings of Canonteign Estate in what was most likely the milking parlour. This season we have a whole new range of stock showcasing unusual and imaginative gifts for all the family, many of which are made locally. These include some stunning new pottery, turned wooden gifts, ornaments, jewellery, pretty scarves and colourful bags, wooden and educational toys, gardening gifts, soaps, ornaments and our new men’s range! Our branded merchandise includes Canonteign Falls tea towels, bags, mugs and prints. We also sell Becky Bettesworth prints, and a range of chocolates, fudges, jams and chutneys from all over the West Country: delicious!

The Isle of Wight Festival to celebrate 40 years of Punk 11th-14th June in Seaclose Park, Newport Punk turns 40 this year, and in celebration of four decades of this exciting and at times controversial music scene, The Isle of Wight Festival, the first major festival of the summer, today adds Iggy Pop, Adam Ant, The Damned, Buzzcocks, The Godfathers and The Sex Pissed Dolls to

what is an already incredible line up for 2016. The above acts will all join Queen + Adam Lambert, Stereophonics and Faithless to perform over the weekend of 11th-14th June in Seaclose Park, Newport. 1976 is widely seen as the year that

punk was born. The Sex Pistols signed to EMI Records, and started to generate significant press coverage - not least for their infamous interview in December of that year with Bill Grundy. The Ramones released their debut album in 1976, and the year saw the formation of not only The Damned and The Buzzcocks, but also other punk legends and luminaries such as The Clash, The Slits, X-Ray Spex, Black Flag and The Adverts. Commonly acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time, Iggy Pop will appear on the Main Stage after successfully touring the globe with The Stooges for the last decade. His iconic solo albums such as ‘Lust For Life’, ‘The Idiot’ and ‘New Values’ have produced anthemic sounds such as ‘The Passenger’ whilst cementing his place in punk rock history. Adam Ant will perform the seismic Adam and the Ants album ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, the No. 1 best selling album of 1980, which was also awarded ‘Best British Album’ at the 1982 BRIT Awards. The singles, ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ and ‘Antmusic’ both hit number 2 in the UK chart and ‘Dog Eat Dog’ reached number 4. Considered to be the record that broke the band into the mainstream, ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ forged a new look for Adam, creating one of the most iconic pop images of all time, which he will bring to life once again at The Isle of Wight Festival. Gothic rockers The Damned, celebrating their own 40th anniversary as punk rock pioneers, will entertain fans with their showmanship and humour, performing tracks from their extensive back

catalogue including ‘Eloise’ which reached the top five in the UK Charts in 1986. Buzzcocks will also celebrate 40 years as a band, bringing their razor sharp riffs to the Isle of Wight. The band are heralded as one of the most important influences on the Manchester music scene, as well as the independent record label movement. Founding members Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle will perform timeless tracks such as ‘What Do I Get’ and ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)’ with a rhythm section consisting of Chris Remmington and Danny Farrant. Legendary rock and roll band The Godfathers consisting of brothers Peter Coyne and Chris Coyne earned a reputation for their electrifying brand of primal rock and roll and incidenary live shows around the world. In 2013 the band returned with the much-anticipated release of their brand new album ‘Jukebox Fury’ after reforming in 2008 for the re-issue of their seminal debut album ‘Hit by Hit’. Five-piece all girl band The Sex Pissed Dolls burst onto the scene in 2014 and have quickly amassed a committed following playing Punk, Ska and Dirty Rock music. Having completed a tour this year playing songs by The Jam, The Clash, Nirvana and The Specials they will pay tribute to the anniversary of the Sex Pistols signing to EMI records 40 years ago at The Isle of Wight Festival. More acts will be announced at a later date – watch this space!

“With an outstanding line-up confirmed including Status Quo, Will Young and Jools Holland, it’s all systems go now, to deliver a family-fun, festival type atmosphere in Vivary Park, to ensure Somerset Rocks creates a lasting legacy and helps raise awareness of the hospice and the work that we do.” Councillor Mark Edwards, Deputy Leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council and Events’ Champion, said: “We are delighted that Vivary Park has been chosen as the venue for this high profile event. It is the ideal place for people to relax and enjoy some of the country’s best musical entertainment in a beautiful setting. Taunton has the benefit of superb road and rail access which will make travelling to Somerset Rocks easy for fans from all over the south west and beyond. “We are proud to offer our support to this exciting event and to help raise awareness of St. Margaret’s Hospice which is dear to so many people’s hearts in Taunton Deane.”

E E C N C A N D A R D E V RRIVI E Live Nation is proud to announce that the Riverdance UK Tour of 2016, which marks the show’s 21st birthday, will visit 13 venues across the UK from March 2016. Tickets will go on general sale at 0900 on Friday 2 October 2015 from www.livenation.co.uk or www. ticketmaster.co.uk. The cast for this tour will feature, for the first time, some dancers who were actually born in the same year that the show first opened; 1995 at the Point Theatre in Dublin! This is an unmissable chance for UK audiences to reconnect with what the Irish Times rightly described as “The Original...The Best”. The Washington Post exclaimed, “Its continued popularity proves that it was, and remains, a phenomenon of historic proportions!” Composed by Bill Whelan, Produced by Moya Doherty and Directed by John McColgan, Riverdance has performed across the UK where it has been experienced by over 2.9 million

people in well over 1000 performances and the show has lost none of its magic. The worldwide TV audience for Riverdance is in excess of 2 billion people.

Producer Moya Doherty said, “Twenty one years after the curtains opened on the first show in 1995, we are proud to be still performing all around the world. We always look forward to our dates in the UK and these shows are sure to be very special. To celebrate our anniversary we have enhanced the production with new lighting, new costumes and a new number. The best of Riverdance with new energy from a stunning young cast of dancers many of whom were not yet born when the show started!” Riverdance has received rave reviews globally but perhaps the simplicity of The Guardian’s verdict sums it up: “Dance does not often get so good”. Riverdance is a celebration of Irish dance and culture, presented with sophistication and

an incredible milestone for an incredible show. Twenty one years after the show first opened, a truly phenomenal piece of theatrical entertainment is back by popular demand. Truly, Riverdance has come of age!

ONLY THE POP ICON’S THIRD TIME EVER PLAYING IN EXETER He is one of the most recognisable, most decorated and bestselling British artists of all time, and once again Elton John will perform on British shores, having announced a string of huge dates in June next year – including a very special show at Westpoint Exeter on June 19th. Elton will, as part of these dates, bring his world-renowned live band show to Exeter on June 19th, in what will be a truly unique and special event – he has only performed in Exeter twice before, once in 1973 and once in 2003 solo. So it is over 40 years since Elton and his band have performed in Exeter. Having given over 4000 performances in a career spanning more than fifty years, Elton said: “The simple truth is I want to spend more time with my family, and I am only too aware of just how precious the time ahead is. My sons are growing up so quickly; their early years are just flying by and I want to be there with them. So these concerts will give me the chance to thank the British audiences who have been so faithful to me over these many decades. We cannot get to everyone but I am going to try to get back to people who love music but get so few concerts – so that makes Exeter important to me”.

On having Elton perform in Exeter Chief Executive Richard Maunder said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Sir Elton John to Westpoint Exeter on Sunday 19th June 2016. It will be the first outdoor concert since planning permission was granted in 2012 for 3 outdoor concerts per year, and I am sure it will be well supported by all those who love the music that the ‘Rocket Man’ has belted out during his amazing 40-year career. It promises to be a night to remember”. An unmistakable name in the history of popular music, Elton John has done it all – and then some. From being awarded multiple Grammys and BRITs, and even an Oscar and a Tony Award, Elton has proven his universal acclaim. In addition to selling more than 250 million records worldwide, through his partnership with lyricist Tim Rice, Elton wrote the music for the feature film and Broadway stage production of ‘The Lion King”. Having performed at several of the world’s most recognisable venues – including a pair of residencies at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Elton John continues to be one of this country’s biggest pop-culture exports, and as such, welcoming him to Westpoint Exeter on June 19th will be a rare opportunity.

RICH HALL 3:10 to Humour

Rich Hall is rightly regarded as one of the funniest comedians to come out of the US in recent times. And, as he is based here most of the time, we in this country have over the past three decades been lucky enough to benefit from his wonderfully grouchy sense of humour. Now, I’m delighted to report, we are about to enjoy more of his unique, crotchety comedy, as he is setting off on a nationwide tour with his brilliant show, ‘3:10 to Humour’. The comedian, who has won both a Perrier (Edinburgh Comedy Festival) and a Barry (Melbourne International Comedy Festival) Award, is the most dazzlingly funny curmudgeon in The West. Rich’s straight-talking and acerbic comedy leaves his targets reeling and his audiences in stitches. He sends up whichever country he is in, but perhaps reserves his most trenchant scorn for his native USA. He is a superb live performer, which is why you should rush now to reserve tickets for the new tour. They are liable to sell faster than hot cakes.

46

Spring UK Tour 2016 Interview by James Rampton In the run-up to the tour, Rich takes some time out to chat with me. You will no doubt be very pleased to learn that this particular comedian is just as funny in an interview as he is on stage. Rich, who has presented such critically acclaimed BBC 4 documentaries as ‘Rich Hall’s Continental Drifters’, ‘Rich Hall’s The Dirty South’, ‘How The West Was Lost’, ‘Rich Hall’s Californian Stars’, ‘Rich Hall’s Cattle Drive’ and ‘Rich Hall’s Gone Fishing’, begins by underlining how excited he is to be performing live once again. “I love being on stage. “I love the fact that when a live show is over, it’s gone. It’s happened, and it will never happen like that again. It can’t be replicated. That’s a great magical moment.” Rich, who is also an accomplished author and has released three books, ‘Magnificent Bastards’, ‘I Blame Society’ and ‘Things Snowball’, all published by Abacus Books, thrives on the spontaneity of live comedy. He observes that, “In every single show, there are always two or three moments where I’m thinking, ‘Wow, where did that come from?’ You’re constantly thinking on your feet.” One of the many unique features of Rich’s act is that he goes out of his way to find out about the town he is playing in and then improvises a song on stage about it. He goes the extra mile to tailor-make his material for that particular venue.

The comedian, who has already released two very successful standup DVD’s in 2001 and 2009 through Universal Pictures UK and will be putting out another stand-up DVD later this year, explains that, “I try to tap into what is happening locally and address that musically by writing an improvised song based on the town I’m in.” Audiences really appreciate this bespoke comedy. “Once they realise you’re not just trotting out your regular act, people think, ‘He’s made a real effort. He’s on our side, so we’re on his side.” Then you can take them anywhere. “I like to do something custom-made every night, otherwise you would just be like a robot. That can really wear you down. Nobody gets more sick of hearing their own voice than a comedian.” Rich, who has also enjoyed huge success as his country and western musician alter ego, Otis Lee Crenshaw, carries on that, “When you’re improvising a song, you think, ‘I may never do this on again, but it’s a special moment for everyone here’. “You want to reach the point where audiences say, ‘I’d like to see that guy again’. You want to deliver the goods and be Old Reliable.” The stand-up is one of only a handful of performers who can genuinely combine comedy and music in one act. To that end, Rich will be bringing his incredibly entertaining ‘Hoedown’ show to London’s Leicester Square 47

Theatre for a limited five nights only, from 19 to 23 April.

if Trump can do it, but I promise you, he will not win.”

He says that, “I will have such a great collection of musicians on stage for the Hoedown. Having a full band there makes it a much richer experience – if you’ll pardon the phrase!”

“There is a lot of gnashing of teeth about Trump, but it’s merely entertainment. He’s doing what he has to do to get attention. He is saying the most outrageous things and tapping into a collective sense of anger.”

Rich goes on to reflect that, “Music works in my show because it connects with people on a very personal level. A lot of comedians just come on stage and say, ‘I was on a bus and I passed so and so.” “But that’s just a reaction to something rather than a specific, custom-made song that engages people. The magic is more important than the material. People really respond to that.” The stand-up’s other trademark is anger, and he is capable of using that to very effective comic ends. Rich comments that, “It is always good to articulate anger. “If you don’t, you’re merely preaching to the converted and asking, ‘Have you ever noticed?’ Yes, we are paying you to notice things we haven’t already noticed!” Rich has just been in the US making ‘How to Kill a President’, another fascinating sounding BBC4 documentary, this time about negative campaigning in the Presidential race. American politics is bound to feature in “3:10 to Humour”. The comic will certainly be addressing the question of whether the extraordinary, controversial businessman Donald J Trump can win the Republican nomination. “People come up to me all the time and ask

But, Rich adds, “Eventually Trump will come under the same scrutiny as everyone else. ‘So you want to build a giant wall along the border and make the Mexicans pay for it? How are you going to do that, then?’” The only positive benefit of Trump, Rich believes, is that he is forcing the other Republican candidates actually to say something substantial. The comedian reckons that, “If the people running had their way, no one would be watching the campaign at all. But when Trump comes along, everyone has to react and talk about issues – and candidates hate that. God forbid that they have to talk about issues!” Before he has to go, Rich reflects once more on what he loves so much about touring. “I’m not a big showbiz hound,” he muses, “but for me being on stage is the most satisfying thing imaginable.” A sentiment with which Rich’s legions of fans would no doubt wholeheartedly agree.
