Music Festival ’14 “A Proper, Pucker, Decent, Down to Earth, Happy, Smiley, Local festival” Glas-Denbury is a unique family friendly Devon festival with something for everyone. Taking place on Friday July 11th and Saturday July 12th at Fairfield Farm, Denbury, just outside of Newton Abbot, it’s an event that brings together people of all ages to appreciate music, entertainment and idyllic surroundings. A truly happy event, one of the friendliest you will ever find, with a wonderful atmosphere – “A little piece of Sunshine” Glas-Denbury boasts a fantastic line-up of over 70 local bands and artists and headliners from all over the country throughout the weekend. The Main Stage, hosted by local well known compere Mr Will Smith from Complete Independent Estate Agency, is headlined on the Friday night by the worldwide No1 80s hit band Dr & The Medics. Undoubtedly best known for their massive

8

1986 No 1 “Spirit In The Sky” which sold over 23 million copies worldwide and was number 1 in 19 countries, throughout their career they have also been recognised as a great live act, never more so than with the current line-up headed by the Doctor himself, who deliver a unique and sensationally flamboyant show!

Children under 12 are free. See website for ticket agents and further details.

Friday 11th July is £15, Saturday 12th July is £20 www.glas-denbury.co.uk @glasdenburyfest • glasdenbury@gmail.com On the Saturday night headliners Electric Swing Circus bring their 6-piece fusion of saucy 20s swing and stomping electro beats to the Main stage. With an explosive sound that reverberates back through time, the ESC hotfoot their way through everything from breakbeat and house to reggae and dubstep, all with their own unique style of swing. Fronted by a sassy female double-act, the ESC delivers a dazzling show not to be missed! The line up throughout the weekend includes Newton Abbot’s own Firekind, who are celebrating signing their first record deal. The band have recently landed a deal with an Australian label and Universal Music. Just two months ago they won “The Global battle of the bands” which took place in Thailand, where they represented England. Their new single “If There’s Any Reason” has already made the Australian top 10 streaming charts just behind Prince and George Michael. With Indie swing from The Fresh Dixie Project, Reggae and Afrobeat from Hot Dub, energetic Ska band Shoot The Moon, inspirational blues performer Jay Tamkin and local bands Society Rocks, The Skull Kids, Hysteria, The New Lights, Empire of Fools and lots more, Glas-Denbury offers something for everyone of all ages. The hugely popular acoustic stage features Owen Penrice who was recently invited to Maida Vale to attend 1Xtra’s Masterclass. He write’s and record’s his own tracks on life and his youthful experiences and you get lost in this artist, as you follow in his reality stories – this musician is a captivator completely in his own right and style too. It can feel a real privilege just to see this musician perform. The stage also features Cydney Brown, Go Tell Alice, blues artist Josie Lloyd and Soundlaunch. The Dance Tent hosts the unique fun and mischief of The Magic Hat Stand who take over on the Friday night with their kaleidoscope of radiating colours enticing you to choose a fabulous hat, wear a silly moustache and cover yourself liberally in glitter. Any excuse for adults and children alike to party! On the Saturday there will be mixing workshops for children (of all ages!) to take part in followed by a great line up of DJs including Dialate and electro swing from Stewart Noise.

The Vaudeville & Chill stage is a new stage this year hosted by local spoken word performer Graham Chilcott. This stage offers a chance for the open minded of you to allow your mind to wander and play in whimsy and watch beauty unfold before your very eyes. Using the Power of words, Graham introduces a poetry slam on the Friday night featuring a multitude of artists from all over the local area. Saturday the stage hosts some of Devon’s best poets, wordsmiths and storytellers plus ventriloquists, dance and juggling – featuring Jimmy Tamley, Jack Dean, Daniel Haynes, Robert Garnham, Jackie Juno, Malaika Kegode and lots more. Glas-Denbury is a family festival and offers entertainment on site throughout the weekend with lots for the children too! The best of Devon’s Entertainers are on site including Jungle Jim and his wild and whacky animal friends, Elfic the Jester with circus workshops and we also have Hula Hoop workshops, Torbay Owls, Auntie Moos beautiful Golden Guernseys and much more for everyone. With bars selling real ale, cider, Pimms, great selection of delicious foods and stalls on site with a wide variety of crafts and activities, Glas-Denbury really is the festival to bring your whole family to and enjoy! The festival will be supporting charities including PAULY stay safe, The Royal British Legion and local Denbury charities and organisations. Hanbury’s Fish & Chips on the Downs Music Festival is • a day of music and live entertainment • a day for all the family • a day for delicious fish and chips • a day for real community spirit • a day to raise as much money as possible for a wonderful local charity • a day to enjoy Held once again in the spectacular Babbacombe Festival Marquee on the glorious Babbacombe Downs I am delighted to bring you a day full of atmosphere and fantastic live music from some incredible talent. I hope everyone has a wonderful time and that we raise as much money as possible for the Torbay Holiday Helpers Network (THHN). Thank you to everyone involved in making this event

happen – the Hanbury’s team, the local businesses and people that support the day, everyone who buys a ticket and, of course, our fabulous line-up of entertainers. I put on this event every year in order to give something back to the community. I love bringing people together to build stronger communities and for people to come from far and wide to experience

what Babbacombe has to offer. I want to be able to make a difference to local charities each year. I know just how much charities such as the THHN appreciate our support and knowing the money raised can put a smile on families faces, makes it so worthwhile. I feel very privileged to be able to host such a memorable, fun, happy event all in aid of charity. David Hanbury

Torbay Holiday Helpers Network (THHN) • The THHN is a registered charity founded by local hotelier, Luke Tillen. • The THHN is committed to providing as many holidays as possible to wonderful families who are going through a terrible time. • The THHN is a network of businesses and individuals who all help provide action packed holidays for visiting families. The network consists of hotels, b&bs, self-catering accommodation providers, restaurants, visitor attractions and all sorts of other businesses who offer completely free accommodation and services. • The THHN provides free action packed holidays to families who have children suffering from serious illness, to bereaved families who have lost a child or parent and to families who have a terminally ill parent. • The THHN started with one hotel offering one family one holiday and is now a network of over 130 businesses and has provided over 380 holidays in less than 5 years. • The THHN holidays are all offered through over 200 charities to ensure that those most in need are given the chance to have a few days away in a beautiful location. A chance to spend some quality time together as a family. For some, it is the last holiday they spend all together.

’’

Quote from a family after their THHN holiday:

Whatever happens to our family this year, next year or any time now, we’ll have these memories and nothing can take it away, no matter how difficult and traumatic things can be. The wonderful thing about the THHN is that many people give what they can – be it a week in their hotel, a fish and chip meal, a cream tea or a free pass to their attraction. Put all this together and a family gets the holiday of a lifetime!

Torre Abbey Historic House and Gardens The Cary family had previously lived here in style, from 1840 they fell on hard times and could no longer keep the Abbey in good repair. In 1930 the family sold the property to the local Council, who turned it into an art gallery with a hospitality suite for the mayor in the south-east wing. The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it housed 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. The Barn is currently used for functions, such as weddings, and exhibitions. Torre Abbey Historic House is an accredited museum owned by Torbay Council. It has one of the largest art collections in the south-west which is rich in 19th century paintings and sculptures. Browse the shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more.

5 star homebuilder reports healthy offplan reservations at Fusion in Paignton Torquay-based family homebuilder Cavanna Homes, which received it second consecutive top 5 star ranking from the House Builders Federation this spring, has announced a healthy number of off-plan reservations at its latest development Fusion in Paignton. Since launching the development in March, the company has reported a steady stream of visitors keen to view the plans and the property designs, make reservations and also meet Fusion’s mascot, Gumball the Gorilla. Fusion is located just off Brixham Road and, when complete, will offer an excellent selection of homes with access to a newly created hilltop park and local facilities which will include a new supermarket.

The first properties are being built at the rear of the site and are not visible from the road. They include three and four bedroom townhouses, three bedroom detached homes and a selection of two and three bedroom terraced and semi-detached homes. All properties come with fully fitted kitchens and bathrooms and the Help to Buy scheme is available which means that eligible buyers can secure their chosen plot with a deposit of as little as 5% and take out a 75% mortgage with the help of a shared equity loan from the government of up to 20% of the value of the property. This spring, Cavanna Homes was awarded a maximum five star rating by the House Builders Federation (HBF), for the second year running, as a result of an independent

Martin Cavanna (left from Cavanna Homes) with 8 year old James Walsh from Roselands Primary School who won a competition to name Fusion’s mascot “Gumball” the Gorilla.

survey which revealed that over 90% of their homebuyers said they would recommend Cavanna Homes to a friend or family. The company is one of only 18 homebuilders nationally to receive the coveted five stars.

CHAGSTOCK MUSIC

FESTIVAL 2014 “The Best Little Festival in The South West”

This Year’s Theme is ‘THE WILD WEST’

THE WATERBOYS LIGHTNING SEEDS THE SELECTER | MOULETTES | BABYHEAD STEVE KNIGHTLEY (GROW YOUR OWN GIG TOUR) THE STANFIELDS | SAM GREEN & THE MIDNIGHT HEIST SHEELANAGIG | Bridie Jackson & The Arbour New Crisis | Downfall Winter Mountain

www.chagstock.info 54

CHAGSTOCK FESTIVAL are delighted to confirm the full main and second stage line up for Chagstock Festival 2014. Lightning Seeds will headline the main stage on Friday night and million-selling alt-rock legends The Waterboys top the bill on Saturday. Lightning Seeds are a Liverpudlian band fronted and formed by Ian Broudie. They’ve had 12 top 20 UK hits and released seven studio albums to date. With Chagstock taking place just five days after the World Cup Final, should the unthinkable happen and the England team go all the way, the rendition of their ubiquitous football anthem Three Lions will be something to remember for a very long time! Formed 30 years ago by Mike Scott, The Waterboys became famous for their powerful live performances and majestic albums such as A Pagan Place and This Is The Sea, which included their biggest hit The Whole Of The Moon. Since the band released their million-selling Fisherman’s Blues album, on which Scott’s original and unusual songwriting

was blended with country, trad, blues and gospel to electrifying effect, The Waterboys have continued to make critically acclaimed, genre-busting records and have matured into one of the world’s finest live acts. Topsham-born Show of Hands fron-tman, Steve Knightley has also been announced to perform a solo gig as part of his ‘grow your own gig’ tour. Also confirmed for the main stage are legendary 2-Tone band, The Selecter; Show of Hands frontman Steve Knightley, Alt-Folksters The Moulettes, 8-piece Bristolian Ska collective Babyhead and award winning Canadian band The Stanfields. The wonderfully chaotic high-energy Balkan folksters Sheelanagig will headline the marquee stage on Friday night. They are joined on the bill by hotly-tipped English blues-rockers Sam Green & The Midnight Heist, Bridie Jackson & The Arbour, Winter Mountain and local Okehampton rockers, Downfall complete the line up. Chagstock’s house band, New Crisis also perform their traditional main stage slot. Chagstock is one of the Westcountry’s best-loved festivals. Set in 70 acres of farmland on the edge of Dartmoor, Chagstock is renowned for its stunning location, diverse line-up of artists and non-corporate, family friendly atmos- phere. Chagstock showcases the very best music, food and entertainment that the Westcountry and the UK have to offer.

After selling out the entire allocation of early bird tickets in record time, all tickets, camping options and vehicle passes for this year’s festival are now on sale at www.chagstock.info This year’s Fancy Dress Theme will be ‘The Wild West!’ As introduced in 2012 in recognition of the tough economic climate for families, all children under 12 can attend the festival for free (ticket is required). Chagstock’s capacity is once again capped at just 5,000 tickets to ensure that its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere is maintained. Simon Ford Chagstock Festival organiser says,

“I am delighted that Chagstock has now sold out two years in a row! With the announcement of Lightning Seeds, alongside acts such as The Waterboys, The Selecter and many others, the whole team is confident that 2014 will be our best year yet and we will sell out once again! As always we are sticking to the non-corporate vibe and family friendly atmosphere with loads of great and varied music, food and entertainment”

Weekend Tickets are priced at £75 (Adults), £50 (Under 18’s), Under 12’s are free (ticket is still required). A Family Ticket for 2 Adults & 2 Under 18s is £210. Camper / Caravans / Live-in Vehicles just £15 per vehicle All weekend tickets include 2 nights of camping and car parking. Day tickets also available, Booking fees apply.

On Saturday 13th September colour craziness will hit Paignton Beach so Rowcroft wants you to grab your brightest whites and be prepared to be turned into a human rainbow. Illyria’s production comes straight from the 14th century Robin Hood ballads – which makes it as authentic as Robin Hood legends come! Written in fast-moving, easy-to-follow verse, and introducing all the well-loved characters such as Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and King Richard, the play

is a collection of tales featuring camaraderie, swashbuckling action, and riotous comedy. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll cheer – and the innocent phrase “Don’t do this as home” will take on a whole new meaning……
