Project Zero Spotlight on Local Talent
Project Zero are an alternative, and sometimes experimental, new rock band from Torquay, Devon. After Drummer Sam McIver found some of Lead Vocalist and Lead Guitarist Matt Millward’s Youtube videos of him playing guitar, he got in touch with the idea to start a new act.
After realising they had a lot of similar interests and influences they instantly started jamming. Realising their potential, they quickly built a music studio in a warehouse owned by Matt’s dad Ray. Influenced by the likes of Muse, Daft Punk, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and the extra influence of Matt’s classical piano playing, their eclectic range of genres varies between alternative rock, funk, electro, metal and even a haunting cover of the 28 Days Later theme is a regular occurrence at their explosive live shows. Matt has been playing guitar for 10 years and has been recently picked up by Ubisoft to tour the country playing at music festivals in promotion of their new guitar teaching tool/video game
8
Rocksmith, while Sam McIver has been active on the local music scene in Torquay. Live gigs are where the band’s passion lies and have already shared the stage with local giants These Reigning Days and had a prime time slot at the popular festival Parrotfest. A Project Zero gig will always see Matt thrashing around the stage, throwing his guitar around while playing high energy riffs and solos while Sam will never shy away from stepping up from the drum kit to rouse up the audience, both delivering an unhinged performance always sending the venue’s atmosphere into a frenzy. The band are currently writing their first demo tape, set to be a combination of powerful melodic anthems and raw electro-rock capable of making anyone dance or mosh. Live Nation is proud to announce that Britain’s best-loved rockers Status Quo will undertake the 11 date “Bula Quo!” UK Winter tour in 2013. Tickets are on sale now from www.livenation.co.uk or www.ticketmaster.co.uk. “Bula Quo!” is the title of the band’s debut feature film [and soundtrack album]. The film premiered in London on 1st July 2013 and goes on general release in July, whilst the 2CD album was released on 10 June 2013. The tour also features very special guests, the mighty 10cc, on all UK dates – two truly classic bands on one bill. A Platinum-selling band, 10cc achieved massive success during the 70s with classic hits like ‘Rubber Bullets’, ‘I’m Not In Love’, ‘I’m Mandy, Fly Me’ and ‘Dreadlock Holiday’. The current line-up, are constantly in demand the world over; these UK dates are going to be really special. Status Quo themselves need no introduction: more hit singles than any other band, more hit albums than The Beatles, more appearances on TOTP than any other act; the superlatives keep coming. Norman Watt-Roy “Faith & Grace” UK Tour
Norman Watt-Roy is delighted to announce that he will undertake a UK tour in support of his first ever solo album “Faith and Grace” released through Cadiz Music. Known of course for his work with the Blockheads, some of Norman’s most celebrated works include bass lines on ‘The Magnificent Seven’ by The Clash and ‘Relax’ by Frankie. Norman has also played shows with Nick Cave and he regularly performs with Wilko Johnson. The wide-ranging live set for this tour, based on the album, reflects his broad musical tastes from Blockheads style funk to rock, virtuoso jazz fusion, bebop, pop, r&b and dance.

track ‘Billericay Dickie’, to a new version of Wilko Johnson’s ‘Roxette’ (which Wilko performs on), to Jazz-tinged instrumentals. This is a masterclass in bass, but also a great listen. ‘Billericay Dickie’ opens the album and is followed by a recording of Dury introducing Norman at the last ever
show they did at the Palladium; this is where the album title comes from, “Faith and Grace” being rhyming slang for Bass. ‘Papa-chu-pap’ also features a sample of Dury and is in fact a kind of collage of samples taken from live shows. Norman’s live band features fellow Blockhead and hugely respected sax player Gilad Atzmon (‘hardest gigging man in British jazz’), guitarist Mike Outram (‘World-class’ The Guardian), keyboard virtuoso Frank Harrison and the astounding jazz-rock drum supremo Asaf Sirkis. Other surprise guests may drop in at any time! “Faith & Grace” has received a great welcome from the music press and fans alike and this tour will see Norman doing what he does best, strutting his stuff live. Unmissable.

JAMIE CULLUM
Announces first UK tour in over three years The ‘Momentum Tour’ kicks off in October Jamie Cullum has announced details of his ‘Momentum Tour’ that will begin on October 14th at the Olympia in Dublin. The tour will take in 16 UK dates including, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and the Roundhouse London. This is Jamie’s first full scale tour here in three years and follows the release last week of his first studio album since 2009. Jamie released his sixth studio album on May 20th; titled ‘Momentum’ for good reason, it is bursting with ideas and inspirations, which almost have a life of their own and has been dubbed his best work yet. It was produced in part by Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Adele) and Dan The Automator (Kasabian, DJ Shadow) and it should come as no surprise that, combined with Jamie’s talent, the album is brimful of some beautiful and epic songs. Jamie gave people a taste of his electrifying live performance and showed that he easily has the stamina for a grueling 16-date tour (over almost as many days) when he played three different venues on the same day last week to promote the launch of his new album. He played on the concourse at St Pancras International, The rooftop at Shelter UK, with the finale at The London Shard. Each show was an absolute roadblock and you can expect the same this October for the ‘Momentum Tour’. Jamie Cullum will be Live @ Princess Theatre, Torquay on the 30th October 2013 Get your tickets now! ‘Ready, Fire, Aim’ Paul Lamb & The Detroit Breakdown is delighted to announce their fourth album release on 4th November 2013 through EE Records, distributed via Code7. ‘Ready, Fire, Aim’ is a raw, honest, and true union of some of Detroit’s finest musicians. The blues rock band will be returning to perform in the UK in November, all dates below. The line-up of Paul Lamb [guitar and vocals], Layla Hall [drums and BVs] and Joey Spina [bass and BVs] have cut their teeth performing hundreds of shows across the US, as well as playing Glastonbury and touring with Walter Trout, Peter Green and many others. They describe the shows as being characterized by “Searing positive energy”, “It’s raw, it’s in your face, it’s like P-Funk meets ZZ Top!” This album means a lot to Paul, who has become known for the strength and depth of his lyrics as well as the passion of his playing. He says, “The title is a statement. Detroit, like much of the world, is spinning out of control. There is a lot of uncertainty and a lot of guess work. We live in a society of disposable ideas. The world has become a data fire fight, a trigger happy information shoot-out. It’s fire
first, aim later. The album is a diary of life told through 100 Watt Amps. ‘Ready, Fire, Aim’ is special because of the collaboration of some of the greatest musicians I have ever known. It was an honor to work along side some of my mentors.” These included people like Joanne Shaw Taylor, Erich Goebel, Bobby East and sound engineers Al Sutton (Rustbelt Studios) and Ed Wolfram PhD (Motown Studios
and United Sound Studio). “I grew up listening to Erich and Bobby play and aspired to collaborate with them. In addition, I’ve worked on several projects with Joanne in the last several and it is always a pleasure”. To see Paul on tour and book tickets please visit www.PaulLambDetroit.com

The Great Gorillas Project Follow the trail around the English Riviera & Exeter from 3rd August – 13th October. This year is Paignton Zoo Environmental Park’s 90th anniversary and we want to do more than celebrate. In those 90 years we have achieved great things in conservation and education and we want to use this landmark occasion to do even more. Gorillas are some of our closest relatives amongst the living primates and that’s why we have chosen them to help us mark this anniversary. Highly threatened in Africa, they are an integral part of the Zoo’s animal collection; we want to raise awareness of their plight in the wild. Great Gorillas is a world-class public art exhibition that everyone can enjoy. Thirty colourful, life-size gorilla sculptures can be seen in Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Babbacombe and Exeter for 10 weeks this summer, forming a trail around South Devon’s streets, parks and open spaces. You can also spot 20 small gorillas decorated by local schools. And there are one or two extra surprises along the way.
The gorillas are as wonderfully varied as you could imagine and have been uniquely designed and painted by some of the finest artists the region has to offer – we encourage you to try to see as many as you can. The maps on the following pages and our mobile site, www.greatgorillastrail.org.uk, will help you track them down – when you’ve spotted one, be sure to register you have by ‘checking in’. Anyone who checks in and spots all the gorillas will be entered into a draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Paignton Zoo’s (real) gorillas up close! So what are you waiting for? Get out now and see how many you can spot!

In an ideal world, how many people wouldn’t jump at the chance to live by the coast, be close to the countryside yet have easy access to work in the city? Cavanna Homes has managed to offer the best of three worlds with its new development Aspects on the rural edge of Dawlish. Within a short walk or cycle ride of the sea front and the railway station, this stylish development offers a tempting lifestyle for families and commuters alike. Cavanna Homes Sales Manager Lynn Worley said: “Lots of people are keen to live by the sea but need to work in Exeter and think that the commute may be too much. If they visit Aspects they’ll soon discover how it
really is possible to achieve the perfect combination of coast, countryside and city.” Aspects is less than a mile from the sea, adjacent to farmland and woods and only a short walk from Dawlish train station where trains depart regularly, arriving at Exeter St David’s in as little as 12 minutes. “We were always told to let the train take the strain, and the idea remains appealing – how lovely to arrive at work in Exeter relaxed and ready to go after a short journey along the coast and through the Devon countryside,” added Lynn.
‘Aspects’ is located in a new neighbourhood just off Secmaton Lane, set within a mature wooded and landscaped area. The 118 property development ranges from two bedroom apartments to four bedroom detached homes with prices starting at just £139,995. The properties are being built to the highest standards associated with Cavanna Homes, with an insurance backed 10 year NHBC warranty and customer support available for a further two years after purchase.
The show homes are open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5pm. For more information please contact aspects@cavannahomes.co.uk or call 01626 866674. 43

Autumn sees launch of new homes at Kings Field by local homebuilder Kings Field, in the Devon village of Kingskerswell, is the latest new homes development to be unveiled by Torquay-based family homebuilder Cavanna Homes. The company, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, was awarded a maximum five-star rating from the House Builders Federation (HBF) this summer, ranking them among the UK’s top housebuilders. The latest Cavanna Homes project, Kings Field, is located just off Charles Road, within a short walk of shops – a chemist, post office and Co-op - as well as a modern primary school, a library, several pubs and a regular bus service. Kings Field offers a range of two, three and four bedroom homes suitable for individuals, couples or families who want to enjoy all the benefits of village life but may need to commute to Torquay, Newton Abbot or Exeter. Property layouts vary across the development but the Cavanna ethos remains the same in that each energy efficient home provides functional living space and modern fixtures and fittings. The Fluder, for example, is a four bedroom town house that features an excellent family-friendly layout where the kitchen and family/dining room stretch almost the entire length and breadth of the ground floor, incorporating a utility and WC as well. On the first floor is a living room, with doors onto the garden, and two bedrooms, with a further two bedrooms – including a master en-suite – on the top floor. For those who like an integral garage, the Kensington is another four bedroom home with the kitchen/dining room and living room on the first floor and three bedrooms, one with a master en-suite, on the top floor.

South Devon College launches
“South Devon High School,” a brand new opportunity for pupils entering year 10 in September 2014.
SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE has announced that from September 2014, they will be opening their doors to young people entering Year 10 and will be offering a new choice to enrol directly with South Devon High School. Pupils will be able to study for a minimum of 8 GCSEs, combining core subject areas, including English, Maths and Science, with a specialist technical pathway. Professor Wolf advised the government that for many young people, combining academic and technical qualifications in a further education environment can give them the very best chance to succeed. In response to demand from our community, and working with employers, pupils entering year 10 will be able to study innovative, high quality, specialist routes with progression to jobs of the future, at South Devon High School. At South Devon High School, pupils will have a choice of 3 technical pathways – Digital Media and Design, Eco-technologies or Leadership and Coaching in Sport and Adventure. The pathways were chosen following extensive research based on progression opportunities into further and higher education, and ultimately the availability of jobs in the South West. The pupils will develop skills valued by employers and benefit from work related learning, using state of the art, industry standard, equipment and resources. Stephen Criddle, Principal at South Devon College said, “I am delighted that South Devon College, one of the top further education colleges in the country, is now able to offer new curriculum routes for young people in Torbay and South Devon at age
14, combining the best of technical skills, pastoral care and core academic qualifications. Working with employers and specialists, South Devon High School will bring new, innovative, high quality choices and routes for progression to the jobs of the future, building further on the College’s track record for student technical success and satisfaction.” Pupils will follow a programme which is equivalent to 8 GCSE’s, and they can personalise their study programme through a choice of technical qualifications and enrichment opportunities. South Devon High School is part of South Devon College, based at the Vantage Point campus in Paignton, and is managed by the same leadership team and governing body as the College. South Devon College was rated as an “Outstanding” education provider at its last Ofsted inspection and South Devon High School will be inspected under the same Ofsted framework as all other schools as part of forthcoming inspections. A key feature of the curriculum at South Devon High School will be smaller class sizes and an emphasis on providing excellent support, including an after school study club, where pupils can complete homework, should they prefer not to take it home.
Matt Burrows, Head of School, said “I am very proud to be leading the school as we provide new and exciting opportunities for 14 and 15 year olds in Torbay and South Devon. Our vision is to ensure that every pupil can reach their full potential in Key Stage 4, by providing the very best support we can, in an employment-focussed learning environment. We are determined to stretch and challenge pupils, through outstanding teaching, and using state of the art resources. Our ambition is that every pupil succeeds in their GCSE examinations, and they are exceptionally well prepared for their next steps into further education or employment.” There will be an Information Event for Parents on Wednesday the 9th of October, held at the University Centre at South Devon College, where parents can find out more about South Devon High School, meet Stephen Criddle (Principal at South Devon College) and Matt Burrows (Head of School). The event will run from 6.30pm – 7.30pm, for more information please email enquiries@ southdevonhighschool.co.uk or call 08000 380 123 and speak to one of the College Helpzone team.

From the young company that sold out the National Theatre last year, comes Gym Party, a razor sharp, slightly dark three-way battle to the death, and hilariously confused call-to-arms. Gym Party is an epic tale of hopeless determination: the brilliant, terrible, universal human desire to win, and go on. Anarchic, comic and thoughtful, it speaks to anyone who frets about the state of the world, then gets distracted by a dumb celebrity tweet.
