Lion cubs at Paignton Zoo

Lion cubs are the pride of Paignton Zoo this summer. Mother Indu and father Mwamba have got their paws full with four lively youngsters.

This is their first success as parents. Paignton Zoo Environmental Park Curator of Mammals Neil Bemment said:“It’s very good news for the species – it is on the edge of extinction and we are working hard to help them. Every birth is vital.”

Asiatic lions are threatened by hunting and habitat destruction. Fewer than 400 survive in the wild in the Gir National Park in India.There are conservation breeding programmes in zoos including a European Endangered species Programme (EEP). And that’s not all that’s going on at Paignton Zoo this summer! New species include ring-tailed

lemurs and coatis - busy and engaging mammals related to raccoons that come from South and Central America.

Look out for the current crop of youngsters - the leggy Rothchild’s giraffe, named Valentino by the public because he was born on Valentine’s Day, not one but two young zebras – the first to be born at Paignton Zoo in a decade – and a Brazilian tapir.

There’s loads to see at Paignton Zoo – so here are a few tips to make your visit easy and special.A greatvalue Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts Joint Saver Ticket is available – the Zooper ticket gets you into both zoos for one wild price and lasts all year.

Get ready to moonwalk the night away at a show that comes all the way from the USA to pay homage to Michael Jackson, the undisputed King of Pop. Forever Michael is on tour in the UK and is appearing at the Palace Avenue Theatre, Paignton for one night only, on Saturday the 6th of October. The spectacular show is currently taking Europe by storm, celebrating the career of the world’s greatest entertainer. The grand production features an incredibly talented cast which is fronted by one of the world’s most exciting and talked about tribute artists – Tejai Sullivan. Haling from Chicago, Illinois, Tejai comes to the UK for the first time in this latest addition to his incredible, whirlwind career representing Michael Jackson. It all started only 3 years ago shortly after Michael sadly passed away on June 25, 2009 at only 50 years old.

Tejai had always dreamed of being a performer and worshipped Michael Jackson from an early age. Much like the rise of mega-star Justin Bieber, Tejai finally got his chance when US producers stumbled across a video of him singing on YouTube and quickly snapped him up to headline an acclaimed Michael Jackson tribute show for an unprecedented world tour. For two years, Tejai headlined the production which also featured choreographer Mic Thompson, who was one of Jackson’s very own principal dancers. The show appeared in countries such as the USA, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Denmark. During the tour, Mic Thompson said about the star “Tejai’s performance is flawless. He reminds me so much of Michael it brings a tear to my eye.”

Talking about the tour, Tejai said: “This is the reason I began performing my tribute to represent Michael in the best possible way in cities all over the world. OTTERS ARE LIVING IN THE HEART OF TORQUAY Living Coasts, on the harbourside, is now home to two female European otters. The two are mother and daughter; the mother was born at Stuttgart Wilhelma Zoo in Germany in August 2003 and her daughter at Edinburgh Zoo in October last year. Living Coasts keepers Maddy Millin and Libor Mach drove the 800 mile or 1200 kilometre round trip to Edinburgh Zoo to bring them to Devon. The attraction – a registered charity – has created a new exhibit called Otter Rapids which has both fresh and salt water pools, a gushing stream,

grass, sand and stones and a pond with an underwater viewing window. It has been built on the site of the sea ducks pool – the ducks have moved to Penguin Beach. Living Coasts Director Elaine Hayes said: “Otters are busy, charismatic, sociable animals – they are a terrific addition to our collection. It’s all part of our drive to keep making Living Coasts better and better.” There’s lots more at Living Coasts than otters with an array of birds and mammals in specially-designed naturalistic habitats, plus

outdoor and indoor exhibits offering plenty to see and do whatever the weather.
