t’s not many people who receive lifetime achievement awards while still in their 30s. But Bobbi Rose Koe, a young Teetl’it Gwich’in woman and recipient of the 2021 Canadian River Heritage Award, is an exceptional person. Her accomplishment marks a number of firsts in the award’s history—the first Indigenous woman to receive the award, and the first northern recipient. The Canadian River Heritage Award is a partnership between the Canadian Heritage Rivers System and the Canadian Canoe Museum. The award is presented every two years and recognizes “the invaluable efforts of an individual Canadian to celebrate, protect and conserve river heritage for future generations.” In announcing her as the 2021 recipient, the award partners highlighted Koe’s “dedication to the preservation and promotion of Teetl’it Gwich’in traditional ties to the Peel River Watershed, and for her tireless and exemplary work as an organizer, community member and advocate for youth engagement in river conservation and connection.” Canadian Heritage Rivers board chair, Mike Etches, is very pleased that Koe received the award, noting the substantial role she played during the Peel River Land Use planning process. “She started back when the Peel was still in the Supreme Court, becoming an advocate for the protection of the Peel and also the sharing of the culture,” Etches said. “So she’s a very sharing and caring person when it comes to her culture, and a great spokes-

Bobbi Rose Koe person for making those connections. And I would say she’s not a shy person—her advocacy was to the point and poignant and I think key, in many ways, to getting the Peel Watershed Regional Land Use Plan finally signed off and the management planning started.” “She’s a force of nature,” he concluded. “She will not be denied.” While Koe is well-known for her work to protect the Peel River Watershed and the people and

animals for whom it is home, she denies that speaking up in public comes easily for her. “My grandfathers, they pushed me into public speaking because they’re the ones that brought me out on the land and traveled with me and saw me grow in that way, and that’s why they’re like, ‘You have to get up because you have a voice and you have to speak for our friends who are living out on cont’d on page 3 ...

At first she objected, saying she was too shy. “And they never said nothing,” she said of her grandfathers. “They just gave me the look.” Since her youth, Koe has made an impression on those around her. Bobbie Rose Koe and Angela Blake at the Wind River relations at the Canadian Canoe Museum, first met Koe when she was a teenager participating in the Students on Ice, a youth program that provides on-the-land educational opportunities in the Arctic. “She just had this kind of poise and commitment to learn that was

very impressive, and I’ve kept in touch with her,” Rattan said. “She’s really made a commitment to be an advocate for her people … to remember and to explore who and what being Gwich’in is all about,” he continued. “And she’s done that in the most-engaging way through

partnerships with other youth. You know, she created the Youth of the Peel, which became the Western Arctic Youth Collective.” Raffan’s comments point to the journey Koe has taken, providing opportunities for young Indigenous people to experience life on the land and water. She recently started a guiding business, Dinjii Zhuh Adventures, to reach that goal. “When we want to do something, we have to do it,” she said. “And I don’t think we’re going to wait for anybody to bring our people back into the Peel, and that’s where Youth of the Peel was created and I did do a few trips with them and then I came to realize, you know, that I want to be a river guide and I can do this, like it’s in my blood. My grandparents and my great-grandparents before them did it, and I just really fell in

love with it.” Koe believes that experiencing beautiful places like the Peel Watershed can be life-changing. She also has great hope in the youth and what they can accomplish. “I’m really excited about the efforts of young people making their way back to the land or other cultural and traditional activities. I’m just proud, every day,” Koe said of her work, with youth, through her business and through the Western Arctic Youth Collective. “We’re changing the world.” And by receiving the Canadian Heritage Rivers Award, Koe sees herself as an example for others. “I hope that young Indigenous youth see this award as an example that we can do anything that we put our minds and hearts to. n

MONSTERS PARADE THROUGH AN IMAGINED GARDEN Come explore, inspect, experience and imagine at the Yukon Transportation Museum Open five days a week beginning May 25 Wednesday - Sunday: 10AM - 6PM info@goYTM.ca | (867) 668-4792

Elijah Smith Elementary student monsters ready to march

Who are these creatures tiptoeing through the tulips, hovering in front of the gallery walls?

A

s the culminating exhibition in Nicole Bauberger’s stint as emerging curator of the Atco Electric Youth Gallery, up at the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC), monsters and flowers created by children will fill the hallway gallery for the month of May and beyond. The Winter Garden has been on display for the months of March and April in the sculpture garden at the Yukon Arts Centre. In a Sunday-afternoon Kids Kreate session, at YAC, families painted

flowers, butterflies and anything they thought should be in a garden, onto cardboard. In the end, this included a bear and a banana. These were cut out of the cardboard and installed out in the snow, so that the imagining of the garden would sustain us through the winter. An earlier version of The Winter Garden has also blossomed in the snow through the whole winter in the Dalton Trail Trail Gallery, an ad hoc gallery of sculptural installation, in Hillcrest, that Bauberger began when galleries closed due to Covid. It was painted by Bauberger’s neighbours. As the snow starts to (hopefully) melt, Bauberger will gather up the winter-worn pieces and hang them in the Youth Gallery. Through this garden, monsters will parade.

These monsters were painted by students at Elijah Smith Elementary School and the Individual Learning Centre, in Whitehorse; the J.V. Clark School, in Mayo; as well as during another Kids Kreate session at the Yukon Arts Centre. The Elijah Smith monsters paraded down Hamilton Boulevard, the Friday before last Halloween; and the Mayo monsters just paraded, on April 22, through their town. In addition to their exhibition parade, some of the monsters will stray, at the end of May, from the Youth Gallery into the Main Gallery, for a short tenure in the larger space. Stay tuned for news of other events, hopefully including another actual Monster Parade, the last week of May and early June. These events will wrap-up Baucont’d on page 5 ...

1 berger’s tenure as emerging curator at YAC, which was based on her true enjoyment of children’s art and her desire to share it with a wider audience. However, the Monster Parade will go on. Bauberger will be making mini monsters, with the public, at Arts in the Park, June 20 to 24. Watch for monsters in The Puppet Path, which Nakai Theatre will bring this September to Wondercrawl, along the Whitehorse Waterfront. She is also scheming monster parades in her youthful hometown of Peterborough, Ontario, this October. For more information, contact Nicole Bauberger at 867-6681577. n

Clayton’s CAR CARE Tips

If you sense your car drifts or pulls to one side, you could have a wheel alignment problem. The alignment of your vehicle’s wheels can affect the way it handles. Your car may drive fine, but when you look at your tires, you may notice that they are wearing. Your steering wheel could also feel not centred. Our team of professionals can align your wheels by placing your vehicle on a wheel alignment machine. This machine uses laser guided measurements to allow our mechanic to set and adjust the suspension components back to the factory specifications. You can prevent the impact of wear and tear on your tires, reduce pulling and feel confident in a safer drive. Tire Shop: MON-SAT 7:30-5:30 Mechanical Shop: MON-FRI 8-5

Fresh Spruce Tips

As I write, It’s the end of the first week in May.

T

he freak dump of snow is behind us, the birds are back, and folks have been spotting croci on sunny hillsides for several days now. Tiny brown buds are already swelling at the ends of spruce branches. Chances are that by the time you read this, those buds will have burst into the bright-green flames of fresh new spruce needles, packed tightly together under a papery husk. Soon we will be harvesting spruce tips. The popularity of spruce tips as a seasoning, a tea, a medicine and in jellies and syrups has grown so much over the past few years that it’s even more important that we remember these tips are the tree’s new growth. It’s a good time to remind ourselves of the protocols of sustainable harvesting: take one in every six tips, leave the one at the very end of the branch in place, gather from healthy trees and spread your harvest over several trees in several areas. Finally, take only what you think you will use. There will be more next year. Some harvesters like to flick the little husk off the end of the tip as they pick—sometimes I do, but generally I don’t bother because the husks will be ground into flakes for salts and sugars, or strained out in teas, jellies and syrups. Once they’re harvested, I usually air-dry a few cups of spruce tips and store them in a glass jar—they make an excellent substitute for rosemary. (Try them in sourdough focaccia.) The rest I pack into re-

sealable bags and freeze, taking them out as needed. The spruce tip season is so short that there’s always a bit of anxiety about getting out there soon enough, but once the spruce tips are picked and dried, or bagged and frozen, the cook is free to experiment with abandon, all year long. Here are a few pantry items to be starting with. TO AIR-DRY SPRUCE TIPS Spread tips in a single layer on baking sheets. If drying frozen (thawed) tips, pat them dry in a tea towel first and turn often for the first few days. Dry in a cool room away from direct sunlight, for about a week, turning occasionally until tips are the texture of dried rosemary, from 5 to 7 days. Store in jars in a cool, dark cupboard. SPRUCE TIP SUGAR OR SALT Note: This recipe is for either spruce tip sugar or spruce tip salt, because the proportions and the method are the same. Use sugar in spruce tip shortbreads; add salt to rubs for grilled meat or fish. Ingredients • 1/4 cup fresh, dried, or frozen (thawed) spruce tips, minced or chopped in a spice grinder • 1/4 cup granulated sugar or kosher salt Instructions Mix tips and sugar or salt thoroughly in a small bowl. Decant into a glass jar and store in a cool, dark cupboard. Will keep indefinitely. Note that when made with fresh or frozen (thawed) spruce tips, the mixture tends to clump— simply break up with a fork before using. Makes 1/2 cup sugar or salt. SPRUCE TIP SYRUP Use as a topping for ice cream, combine with honey and pour over baklava or, of course, add to your favourite gin cocktail.

Ingredients • 2 cups spruce tips, fresh or frozen (no need to thaw) • 2 cups water • 2 cups sugar Instructions Bring sugar and water to the boil. Add spruce tips, reduce heat to medium and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes. Taste: if the flavour is pronounced enough for you, strain through a sieve lined with cheesecloth, bring to the boil in a clean saucepan and pour into sterilized jars. Cool, refrigerate and use within a month. For a stronger flavour, cool the syrup to room temperature and refrigerate overnight. Next day bring to the boil again, strain through a sieve lined with cheesecloth and return to the boil in a clean saucepan. Pour into sterilized jars. Cool, refrigerate and use within a month. Makes 2 cups.

BETWIXT AND BETWEEN

I learned an unfamiliar word last week, liminality (liminal space)— the in-between space, a time of transition.

A couple cherry-blossom viewing at VanDusen Botanical Garden, in Vancouver end of our life may think of rituals for celebrating our own life or the lives of loved ones. So many have faced the isolation and separation from family members, over the last two years of Covid. We’ve been in a holding pattern, waiting and not knowing what to do next. Do we go back to the old and familiar ways? I’ve taken some time to pause, to reflect on what I’ve learned, to recover and, finally, to emerge out of this “dark cave.” What can we do

to support our transition and spring into this new life? I took a hesitant step forward, in April, and ventured out on a plane to the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival. My spirit was lifted by seeing the blossoms of not only cherry trees, but of magnolia, rhododendron, daffodils and tulips. There is something physically uplifting about being surrounded by greenery and bathing in blossoms. Below the falling petals of white cherry blossoms, I saw a young couple sitting on the ground, enjoying a picnic. In Japan, this is a common spring ritual. That evening I talked to my husband, in Whitehorse, who was experiencing the gentle falling of snow and minus 22. On a VanDusen garden walk, with a guide, we stopped to admire a “Snow Goose,” a type of cherry tree. And there appeared a flash of iridescent green, a hummingbird drinking in the blossoms. We enjoyed drinking in the view of the hummingbird and the blossoms. It was such a gift to see some signs of spring and to imagine that it would soon arrive in the Yukon. Our family’s spring ritual is to go for a crocus walk along the hillside, across from our place, to discover the first ones. We sighted one on April 29. The other markers of spring are the flypast of trumpeter and tundra swans and, if we’re lucky, a bluebird looking for a suitable nesting spot. While in the Lower Mainland, it was a special treat to spend some time with my sister, who I hadn’t seen in person since the summer of 2019. We went to the Surrey location, the house site my father had built when he settled in Canada in 1937. The new owners demolished the house around 1979, and it is now a church parking lot. In 1979, I was there with my parents, my oldest brother and my husband and son, the day before the new owners demolished the house. I salvaged two lead-paned windows.

For my parents, the house had represented a liminal space. It was a time of transition when the federal government had forcibly moved all people of Japanese ancestry, from the Lower Mainland, to places east of the Rockies, in 1942. That is part of my family history and is one that I continue to research and write about for my family and for others interested in that history. I think legacy stories can help us all to transition to new perspectives and perhaps to identify our own values and direction. For those fortunate to have grandchildren or young people in their lives, stories of life experiences and lessons learned provide wonderful triggers for

deep conversations. We’re all emerging now from Covid restrictions, from the confines of our homes and from the dark and cold of winter. For me, I will get outdoors—camping, walking, gardening a bit (but not enough to hamper my camping trips), socializing with friends and family, retreating to paint with watercolours, writing, reading, and hopefully creating a legacy gift. What will you do to move out of that liminal space and transition to the next phase of your life? Stay safe. n

igration. It’s a word that gets birders all a twitter! In spring, the Yukon comes alive with birds, from as far as Antarctica, flying here to nest and rear their young. It’s a season that the Yukon Bird Club (YBC) celebrates, with its annual Helmut Grünberg Yukon

Birdathon. The 24-hour birdfest, always held at the end of May, runs this year from 5 p.m. on Friday, May 27, to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 28. The birders’ aim is to listen and look for as many species of birds

Yukon Birdathon ... cont’d from page 11

To Living Yukon Life a Little Better

The Yellow Warbler is one the Yukon’s prettiest songbirds, migrating from wintering grounds in Central America to nest here each spring. It’s the favourite bird of Lena Ware, this year’s Feature Birder for the Yukon Bird Club’s Annual Birdathon as possible, while raising funds for bird conservation and awareness. It’s a friendly competition, for some. Founder Jim Hawkings, the YBC’s current president, sees the Birdathon as an opportunity to “combine a bit of fun and education with a bit of fundraising. It’s a chance to spend as much or as little time as you like enjoying the outdoors—when it is alive with the full variety of birds that will be breeding here, as well as some that are still migrating north,” he said. It’s not just for “twitchers” or avid birders, either. “We try to encourage birdwatchers of all kinds to participate, including beginners and families,” Hawkings said. Donations (tax deductible) are generated through pledges or

directly, online, to support YBC’s non-profit education-related programs, such as research grants, field trips and scholarships. Prizes offered include those for self-propelled enviro-birders, families/households, new participants, home birders (deck, yard) and the youngest and oldest participants. Last year, of the 147 species reported, overall, well-known birder Jukka Jantunen identified the most (111), followed by Adam Perrier (102), and Haines Junction birder Julie Bauer (92). Malcolm Boothroyd tallied 80 species on his fossil-free Birdathon, cycling and paddling. Hawkings said a key part of the event is a social gathering, afterwards, to share food and the day’s birding adventures. This year’s wrap-up potluck

f you can’t join in on this year’s Birdathon, consider sponsoring Lena Ware, the club’s designated Feature Birder. Ware is a biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service and a new YBC board member. She’s putting a small Birdathon team together to scour local hotspots — such as the impressive McIntyre Creek wetlands, to meet her birding target of 90 species. Ware’s birding passion began in BC in 2013 while doing research on Yellow Warblers, her favourite bird. The tiny, colourful songbird winters in Central America but heads north to breed and raise a family. It’s often found in willows and is known for its sweet, vibrant song. Fascinated by migration, Ware’s worked on beach bird surveys, owl surveys, and vol-

barbecue is at Rotary Peace Park, at 6 p.m. on Saturday. To find out more about the Birdathon, get bird checklists and other birding resources, visit YBC’s website at yukonbirds.ca. The club’s free guided bird walks, to local hotspots such as the Whitehorse Quartz Road marsh, can introduce you to Yukon’s bird world and knowledgeable birders. An easy and useful birding tool is eBird (check out ebird.org/canada/home), an online program and mobile app to record your checklist and view what other people have reported—both locally and around the world, often in real time. Binoculars and a good birding guide, online or from your library or bookstore, are useful, too.

Ware has also studied various seabirds, shorebirds, crows, and songbirds in as diverse places as the Gulf of Alaska, Guam, California and Nunavut’s SouthamptoIsland. Since 2018, her focus has been on Yukon birds through her work and personal adventures. A “highlight” last year was seeing her first Surfbird (which winters along Pacific shorelines), in the Tombstone Mountains. “I enjoy birding because it gets me outdoors with friends and it takes me where I might never go, otherwise,” Ware said. n

The Best Things in Life are… Rescued!

Meet Bronson!

May 30

He is a 2 year old, male, pitbull mix. This lovable guy is full of love! He is quite playful and loves to be with people. He is medium sized, and has a medium coat. He has a bit of energy and would benefit from regular moderate exercise. He knows the basics but would do well with someone furthering his training and socialization. He would do well in a home with older children, and with proper introduction, a female dog. We do not know how he is with cats. If you are interested in adopting Bronson please fill out an online application at humanesocietyyukon.ca.. If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards her.

Got Puppies…? Did you know that if you surrender all the pups to YARN, we’ll raise the pups, pay for all their care and veterinary costs, find them homes using a responsible adoption process – and spay your mama dog for free and give her back. We are trying to reduce the future over’PUP’ulation in the North, by adopting to family’s that will spay & neuter. Each female dog that is not spayed could produce up to 67,000 descendants in her lifetime. Unwanted dogs - suffer. For more information or to send us a message visit our

New Site Infrastructure at the Eagle Gold Mine Over the winter, the Eagle Gold Mine construction team was busy developing new infrastructure at site including a new truck shop, conveyor extension and water treatment plant. “Since the mine started production in the Fall of 2019, the Victoria Gold team has gained experience operating through three winters to evaluate our operations and assess efficiencies,” says Victoria Gold President & CEO John McConnell. Construction of the site’s new truck shop began in the second quarter of 2021 and is now complete. It was designed and built with four full-size maintenance bays and one wash bay; each sized to accommodate the largest mobile equipment on site. A fixed conveyor was also installed to support ore stacking to the upper areas of the mine’s heap leach facility (HLF). This additional conveyor was successfully constructed, commissioned and tied into the existing conveyance system over a six-week period and will feed ore directly onto the in-pad mobile stacking system for the next 18 to 24 months (until a new conveyor is installed). With the additional fixed conveyor complete, the team is now fully dedicated to building the site’s new Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Construction of the concrete foundations is underway and commissioning is scheduled for August with operation to commence shortly thereafter. The WTP will treat mine contact water for discharge, as per the mine’s operations permits. “This new Water Treatment Plant ensures that we meet our discharge requirements even in the most extreme weather events and with very high protection of the environment,” adds McConnell.

The Eagle Gold Mine is situated within Victoria Gold’s 100 per cent-owned Dublin Gulch Property located approximately 375 kilometres north of Whitehorse and 85 kilometres north, northeast of the Village of Mayo, within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND). The company employs over 500 workers and contractors; half of which are Yukoners At Work and many are FNNND citizens. If you are a Yukoner with mining experience, Victoria Gold encourages you to become a Yukoner At Work.
