he Mystik Lubricants Terracross Championship (terracrossracing.com) pits a diverse cast of action sports and off-road athletes against each other on stock, identically-prepared Polaris RZR side-x-side and utility quads. Terracross tracks are part motocross, part obstacle course and all gnarly. Rocks, logs, mud, bumps, turns and jumps make each Terracross event a mix of speed and technical skill where a wrong move can leave you at the back of the pack or upside down. To win a Terracross event you need experience and skill as well as a little daring. Page 4

Terracross Ramps Up For Second Season
Poised for its second season, the 2013 Mystik Lubricants Terracross Championship is set to expand from two events it held last year to three. At the first two events Terracross will revisit its venues from last season, ERX Motor Park just North of Minneapolis, Minn., and the massive Sno Barons Haydays event in North Branch, Minn., and will hold a third grand finale event this fall with location TBD. The series will be filmed and aired on CBS Sports Network with six original programs and six reairs on the schedule.
Last season, ATV racing legends Doug Gust and Daryl Rath led the pack combining to win six of eight races, but some not-so--well-known names also rose to the top including Rory Beckman and snocross racer Andrew Carlson who
also claimed Pro class wins. Other racers who placed well were snocross racer Brennon Plaisted, off-road racer Jeff Loyd, ATV racer Zak Zakowski and X Games gold medalist and ESPN commentator Chris Burandt. This season, Gust will be looking to defend his Pro Terracross Side X Side points title and Rath will trying to repeat as Pro Utility Quad champ. July 2013

short, crossing the finish line ahead of your opponent doesn’t necessarily equate to a win since trick scores can put a rider on top despite not taking the checkers first. Last year professional freestyle quad athlete Jon Guetter swept the events on his way to claiming the championship ahead of Mike Hurd. This year Jon, his brother Derek and X Games freestyle star Colten Moore and his long-time riding partner Marco Picado will deepen the highly-competitive field. Terracross events promise fun for all ages. Fans have the chance to meet drivers and watch some of the most fun, competitive off-road racing on the planet. If you can’t make it out to see an event in person every race will be aired on CBS Sports Network.
2013 Mystik Lubricants Terracross Championship Schedule August 10-11: ERX Motor Park, Elk River, MN September 7-8: SnoBarons Haydays, North Branch, MN Interestingly, Rath took the points in Pro Utility Quad despite Gust claiming two of the four wins and Rath tallying only one. In addition to Side-X-Side and Utility Quad racing, each of the 2013 Mystik Lubricants Terracross Championship events will feature Speed

& Style, an event that’s part ATV race and part freestyle competition. Competing on race quads, riders start in pairs and race the track while also hitting freestyle ramps and throwing down their best tricks. Wins come from a combination of course time and trick scores. So, in

1971 Plymouth Duster On January 3, 1972 at 2:32 pm, I signed the purchase papers at Fury Motors in South Saint Paul, MN. I had purchased a 1971 Plymouth Duster with a black interior, a 225 slant six with a 904A transmission and an AM Radio. It was my 19th birthday and I had paid $2,200.

The reason I bought the Duster was because it was easy on insurance, easy on gas and easy on the eyes,...besides my main goal at the time was to find a 1966 Barracuda Formula 5 with an automatic. I had heard and read about the slant six growing up and how bullet proof and economical it was and then in the 60’s and early 70’s the slant six was being raced. That is when I started to map out what I wanted the Duster to be. Life got in the way. A year and a half after getting the car, I got married and later in the Air Force we brought our son home in the Duster. It was our family/ grocery getter for years and after driving it for 20 years it was stored waiting for the time and money to take on the project I had been thinking about for years. I also own a 1966 Barracuda and was getting it restored at SharaDon Performance in Hugo, MN when I was asked by Denny Byers what my next project was? I told them I wanted my Duster to be a street/strip car to do the 1/4 mile in the tens with a slant 6 and look like it was new! I was met with stares. That was a Friday. On Monday after some research, Jerry Williams had a notebook filled with information and he said, “It can be

done!” So we did! The 225 bored and stroked to 262 cubic inch displacement. 440 billet main caps. Drilled out oil passages to 5/16. Mopar performance high volume oil pump. T&D adjustable roller rockers with custom push rods. Intake vales 2.02. Exhauste valves 1.55. Head ported fully. Head, pistons and block all notched for valve clearance. Oil pan deepeneded 2 inches, baffles and scrapers installed. Crower custom cam - offset ground forged crank - custom Carillo rods. Bee hive springs. Ross racing custom pistons. Custom aluminum sheet metal intake. Custom exhaust header 3-1-2-1 The original plan was for a street/strip car, but SharaDon Performance did such a perfect job, I started doing a few shows and that morphed to bigger shows and at World of Wheels in St. Paul my Duster took top honors in its class and best engine. At Muscle Car Corvette Nationals it took a gold trophy in its class and at the World of Wheels in Duluth it took 2 top trophies. Future plans include the Indianapolis in June, Carlisle in July and Columbus Nationals in August. (If everything goes right in between races, and nothing breaks!)

Written by Rev Dzl Of all the things I’ve done or experienced in this life the birth and lives of my children is by far the most precious and meaningful endeavor that I have undertaken. I know this is a weighty subject but stick with me here. We are only as good at parenting as those who raised us and the knowledge we’ve chosen to obtain and to either correct or continue those patterns with our own lil monsters. That being said I’d like to hit on the topic of upbringing into the motorsports world. We all know that whether or not we are trying, we are under constant and critical supervision of our actions by our kids…they’re observational sponges and we need to be aware that our every move is under severe scrutiny; like it or not. Having grown up as part of a working family farm I was lucky enough for many and most of our work and past time activities taking place in the shop and outdoors. From the time I was old enough to hang out there without being too much of a hindrance with the men I would snatch up my dog and race to the shed where all the magic seemed to happen. The sights and smells of diesel, gas, rubber and oil were destined to be part of my DNA. Soon enough you become a bolt runner, wrench collector, oil monkey or some other subservient geek that is willing and able to do whatever it takes to join in this super masculine pursuit. As the years rolled by and work and hobby begins to mesh activities of changing oil and greasing equipment give way to simple then more complex fabrication. Welding, torching and shaping metal all first observed then crudely attempted become daily adventures. Soon you tackle your first project…that could be as simple as oil change on the mower, mom’s car or whatever but you’re doing it on your own…and finding that working with your hands is a very satisfying way to pass the time. Soon interest turns to, “just what can I do with these hands to make myself go fast and perhaps build my own piece of cool.” The biggest message is those that you’ll never have to tell them. Taking kids of age to the dirt track, drags, tractor pulls, trail riding or moto or sno cross are all things that can fundamental transform them. One of the favorite events I take my son and daughPage 12

ter to annually is Monster Jam. It brings them into the world of real life superheroes and allows them to experience at a safe distance the sights, sounds and smells of crazy horsepower and engineering in action. They have each been going since they were six months of age and get stoked annually to go again. Slowly you begin taking them to more and different events as well as allowing them the experience of a “ride with mom or dad.” Nothing has been more heart-warming than hearing them giggle as we hit a hard corner strapped into the side by side, Trans Am or more recently on the back of the HD. This summer I am buying my kids their first motorized scoot of their own. This is the probably the biggest leap I have taken into having a motorhead buddy yet. I think it is great to give your kids every opportunity to do and try as many things as they safely can but when they adopt and embrace something you find passion in there’s a bond you feel that is priceless. Something they can tell their kids about grandpa or grandma that made them who they are… The bottom line is you can’t make a kid into a better version of you because being unique individuals they will do and be who they are but when you can find something you share as a common past time it makes the time you spend together that much more meaningful. Take your kids to a dirt track, drag strip or pull this summer. Get them on/in a side by side, street rod, four wheeler or motorcycle and give them that thrill of breathing in the fumes and feeling of a hard acceleration, jump or aggressive corner and enjoying the outdoors with you in your vehicle of enjoyment…the smiles, the talks, the laughter is something that can’t be bought. If you have a niece or nephew whose parents aren’t into the lifestyle that we love nab ‘em up for a day trip and give them something to remember. These sports offer something that no video game, cartoon or virtual b.s. experience will ever replace…It aint real if it ain’t steel and wheels…Get out and share that with a kid! Have a good motoring season my friends, Rev Dzl

(June 14, 2013) Todd Lesenko and Worsham Racing return to NHRA action in Chicago, bringing in CN, (Canadian National Railway Company), as their new primary sponsor for the 2013 NHRA Route 66 Nationals on June 28th. “I’m extremely proud to have a great North American railway company supporting our team,” said Lesenko. “CN and our team share the same core values: a commitment to safety and striving for excellence.” CN transports approximately C$250 billion worth of goods annually for a wide range of business sectors, ranging from resource products to manufactured products to consumer goods, across a rail network spanning Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico. “We’ve been working really hard with everyone at Forward Sports Marketing to bring in a sponsor for our team,” said Lesenko. “CN is the perfect partner for us.”
Todd Lesenko is driving the Worsham Racing Nitro Funny Car at a selected number of events in 2013. Lesenko has competed in three NHRA races so far this season, making it to the quarter finals at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix.

he race tracks at Brainerd International Raceway got a workout during the first two months of the season, and July will be just as busy. The month kicks off with one of BIR’s most popular events, the 27th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Show & Go. It’s a combination of big horsepower, high speeds and thrilling racing as fans are treated to drag racing, Superbike racing and much more July 5-7. The second leg of the three-race Muscle Car Series will be on the drag strip all weekend. Fans will see speeds over 200 mph and times dipping down below 7 seconds. The cars display the type of horsepower that yank their front ends right off the ground. If you’re a fan of wheelies, then the drag strip is where you’ll want to be. Page 16

July 2013
For fans who like the two-wheel racing variety, the Central Roadracing Association will be on BIR’s 2.5mile Competition Road Course, where they’ll be flying around the track’s 13 turns on two wheels, a knee and a prayer. It’s club racing by some of the most skilled Superbike racers in the Midwest.
In addition to several cruising sessions, Powercruise features drifting, powerskid and burnout contests, off-street drag racing, a stage show, a car show, music and a lot more.
There are plenty of things to do off the track as well, including a classic car show, fireworks, live music by Junk FM and kids activities.
Powercruise isn’t the only opportunity for race fans to get behind the wheel on BIR’s world-class race track. The BIR Performance Driving School has eight more school dates on the schedule. These are day-long schools where students learn the finer points of handling a car at high speeds.
The Invasion of the Aussies Powercruise is returning to BIR July 12-14 for the third year, featuring Aussie-style cruising, racing, car shows and a whole lot more. With similar events Down Under that attract thousands of fans, Powercruise is quickly gaining in popularity in the United States as well. You’ll never see anything like this. The best part of Powercruise is that fans can participate in the different events, including the cruise sessions where they can load up their cars with their mates and cruise BIR’s 3.1-mile Donnybrooke Road Course.
Get Off the Couch and On the Throttle
With a staff of highly skilled and knowledgeable driving instructors, most of who have raced competitively, the school combines classroom and ontrack instruction. Students spend 25-minute sessions on the track either in their own car or in one of the school’s single-cockpit, 5-speed Spec Racer Fords race cars that top out around 130 mph. Nobody ever walks away from the school unsatisfied. If driving straight and fast is more your thing, the Wednesday Night Drags – Street Legal Style program is for you. There are four more Wednesday’s left, giving drag racing fans four more chances to bring their street-legal car, truck or bike to BIR and running the drag strip as much as time allows. Gates open at 4 p.m. and racing runs from 5 p.m. until dusk. In addition to bringing a street-legal vehicle, drivers must have a helmet and $25. The car goes through tech inspection and then they hit the track, using the burnout box, light tree and scoreboard. There’s even an announcer calling the action. Most of the events at BIR feature categories for racers who are breaking into that type of racing and are using their own car or bike. Check out BIR’s website for more details about how you can get off the couch and on the throttle!

#57 Sam Kemp-Yamaha, #34 Gavin Janovsky-Yamaha #27 Jacqueline Riess-KTM and #777 Bryce Barney-Honda #250 going for the holeshot at the start of the Jr. 14-16 race. I had never attended a race at the Kato Cycle Club racing grounds, and I must say that the beauty of the track and surrounding area, with the bikes hooking up in the turns like they were on rails, had me thinking that I should put the camera gear up for sale, to reinvest in a motocross bike to put to the test, myself. The first race of the day saw riders in the 250-A Class winding their way through the undulating track that snaked it s way up and down the Mankato Bluff Country,
through thebeautiful old growth forest and then back into the clearing of the supercross section/spectator viewing area where #730 Blake Raskovich took his first victory before going 1/1 in 250-A to take the overall in the class with Honda mounted Connor Ahlers # 575 from Duluth taking the middle step of the podium with his 2/2 finish and Kawasaki mounted #52 rider Adam Koch rounding out the top 3. In the 250 Jr 14-16 class, Yamaha mounted #57 Sam Kemp from W, St Paul blazed his way to the top step of the podium with his 1/1 finishes to enjoy the spoils of the victor. Action from 85cc 9-11 racing saw Gavin (Smooth Operator) Janovsky #34 pilot his expertly prepared Yamaha YZ85 2-Stroke jet to a one/two finish to take the overall victory. Austin Kristiansen was clawing at the rear wheel of Gavins bike to secure second place in class. Girls Jr 9-12 racing saw Kourtney Trautner #571 wheel her Kawasaki KX machine to a second place in the first moto, and a first place in moto-2 to take the overall in class for the day, over a hard charging Paige Carlson from New Prague MN, on her #183 Kawasaki.

In 55+ racing action, Dave (Hollywood) Hencir from St Paul piloted his #17 Honda to a 1/1 finish for the overall in class, twisting the throttle to within an inch of it s life, to find himself atop the podium. igh school is an important part of our lives. It's our bridge from being a kid to becoming an adult. We do a lot of “finding ourselves” during those years, trying to fit in and find our niche of friends. For a lot of us, that's when we first found love and got our first kisses. I think the big thing though, for us gear-heads at least, is getting our driver's license. Oh yes. For everyone, that card was a symbol of freedom, but for those of us who grew up loving cars it meant a little more. It was the essential part of the puzzle to our dreams of hot-rodding and car customization. A lot of our first cars though were nothing that special to begin with. Usually a family hand-me-down, or something that a meager, 16-year-old could afford working part-time in the summer. For me at least, by the time I was graduating high school, I was on car number 5, constantly trying to upgrade to something bigger and better. For Marlon Juarez, his story is a bit different. His heart was set on a Mustang from the get-go, and thanks to his uncle for co-signing a loan for him back in high school, Marlon was able to get his 1995 Mustang GT right after he got his license. Page 28

Despite landing his dream car at such a young age, Marlon had to jump back into reality quickly, working a part-time job at a fast food restaurant in between school and studying to pay for his beloved car. That means the mods couldn't start till later. Of course a few bolt-ons found their way onto the car here and there, but the real fun didn't begin till years later after Marlon had finished school and started his career as a diesel technician for a busing company. The big benefit of holding onto a car for so long is you breed a sense a familiarity with the car, and you get to see it progress over time. Me, I never really saw many projects through since I was so busy buying, building, and selling to fund a new purchase. It kept things exciting, but I guess I never re-
ally got to enjoy my cars too much though. Marlon on the other hand has seen his Mustang go from a bolt-on 5.0, to a turbo 5.0, to now a 427ci-Windsor motor with an 80mm turbo and a th400 transmission! This car is one serious bit of kit, and Marlon couldn't be happier. I had remembered seeing Marlon and his Mustang at the older RKC MN meets back when they were in Anoka, when it was still a 5spd/70mm car, and was pretty shocked to see the car late last year rocking this new, insane setup. It's safe to say that this feature has been months in the making, and I was happy to finally be able to meet up and shoot his car and get the full scoop on it. For me, it's really cool to see someone have a project for so long and take the years to fine-tweak it and perfect it. Although when Marlon's wife asks if the car is done he simply responds, “it probably never will be. We'll start at the heart of the matter, and the most impressive part; the motor. As I said, about 3-4 years ago, I first met Marlon when it still had the 5.0, 5spd, and 70mm turbo setup. It was a stock 5.0 then, but after running that setup for a bit Marlon decided it was time to get serious, and pulled the motor, transmission, and turbo, and sold everything to start saving for the new setup. The heart of the new setup is centered around a Dart 351w block which has been bored and stroked to 427 cubic inches. The block has been fitted with an Eagle rotating assembly and JE, 9.5:1 compression pistons. On top sit a pair of highport Trick Flow heads, and a custom-ground Comp cam provides the

extra lift and lope. Other engine goodies include a high-capacity Moroso oil pan, an ATI crank dampener, a 90mm throttlebody, and ARP hardware. With such big motor, Marlon had something planned in terms of the power-adder. Sticking with his love for boost, Marlon kept the turbo theme going, but tossing the dinky, 70mm aside for a baby-inhaling 80mm, T6-frame turbo. Bolted to a set of custom manifolds from Mean Street Performance, the basketball-sized snail is good for producing 1200+ horsepower. Keeping the turbo in check are a pair of Tial 38mm waste-gates, and the pressurized air is fed through a
massive front-mounted intercooler before entering the 90mm throttle-body. Supplying the necessary fuel to compensate that much air is a set of eight, 120lb/hr fuel injectors. To keep up with that demand, Marlon sumped his stock fuel tank and added both a high-flow internal fuel pump, and a massive external Eliminator fuel pump. Keeping tabs on the whole show is a Fast FXI ECU which keeps everything running smoothly.
since the goal for the car is drag-racing. I don't care how much more “fun” people say driving a manual car is, there is a lot that can be appreciated from a big-power auto car. There's a time and a place for a manual transmission car, and a time and a place for an auto car. Marlon chose the formidable GM TH400 transmission to handle the task. These are near bullet-proof transmissions, and a great solution that doesn't break the bank that badly. Marlon's TH400 is fitted with a reverse-pattern, manual valve-body, new clutch packs, drums, and a trans-brake for those hard launches. For the stall, Marlon went with a converter from PTC that he absolutely loves. It's great on the street and not too loose, and locks right up when the boost hits. To plant the power, the rear-end of this Mustang also received some attention. While it's still on the stock, 8.8 rear, Marlon addressed some of the weak-points by
To help put all the new-found power down, Marlon decided to ditch the 5spd manual setup and go with an auto transmission
adding 35-spline Mosser axles, c-clip eliminators, and a Strange spool. While Marlon still hasn't taken the car down the track yet with this setup, the car has dyno'd on a shake-down pass at a measly 9psi a little over 600hp. With a target boost of 1618psi, I'd expect this car to be putting down 850hp-900hp through the TH400 and running well into the 9s. The rest of the car is all business. Despite having aged with Marlon, the car no longer

has the big stereo and crazy lights of his High School years and instead boasts a pair of bucket seats and enough digital gauges to rival a fighter jet. Hey, can't fault him for wanting to keep tabs on his baby. While the stock-body, “drag car look may be boring to some, I think that this car looks right at home on the big-and-little setup thanks to a set of Weld Draglites, 15x4.5 up front and 15x8 in the rear. Firestone front-runners are mounted on the front while the sticky Nitto drag-radials fill

up the rear arches. While the car means absolute business, Marlon couldn't be more about fun than anyone else. Even during the shoot we were having fun reminiscing about old, racing days and where things are at now. Marlon's still active in the local scene and enjoys driving his Mustang on the street to shows and meets. He's hoping to bring it out the track this year after he gets everything dialed in as teething issues with a new build are almost unavoidable. Marlon would definitely like to thank
Richard Brown from Mean Street Performance for all the fab work, and Todd Fesenmier for all the motor work. Of course, there's a special thanks to his wife, Angela for putting up with his second love. While I don't know if there are any Marlon Jr's planned for Marlon and his wife, it's safe to say that this Mustang is going to be part of the Juarez family for many more years to come.

Friday’s have been busy for the racetrack with a sprint cars, a lot of racing action and even some parades. The Princeton Speedway partnered with Justin Pogones and AJ’s Complete Automotive and participated in Zimmerman’s Wild West Days Parade. A couple weeks later was the Princeton Rum River Festival Parade with the Speedway and Minuteman Press being represented. Both parades featured the #01 Street Stock of Justin Pogones and the #71s Midwest Modified of Tim Siercks was in the Princeton Parade. Kids love seeing the racecars roll down the drive, love getting photos of the drivers and above all they love that candy!
The Upper Midwest Sprint Car Series (UMSS) sprint cars made their first appearance at the track on June 7 with more than twenty drivers signing in. The sprints had three heats, two challenge races and a feature that was full of battles, quick passes, a fire and of course a roll over. Lee Grosz led the first half of the feature but Brooke Tatnell causally chased him down. With about eight laps to go, Tatnell shot through the curves and took the lead. Tatnell led the remaining laps with Grosz keeping close in second. Tatnell took the win and celebrated by doing multiple donuts in the infields grass. Besides the sprints putting on a show, there were many nights of great racing. May 31 had three make-up features and a full night’s regular show making it a night of nine feature events. On that night, 18 year old Mitch Hribar took his first feature win in the Mod Four class’s make-up feature. Hribar also took the regular feature win giving him self two feature wins in one night. In the make-up feature, Hribar ran second most of the race, but took the lead when the leader was charged with a caution. Hribar then held off Dustin Zieske and Kyle Thell taking the win. In the night’s regular feature, Hribar, Matt Staab and Ross Mead went three wide around the track, but Staab pulled away for first. Hribar kept close until Staab spun out and the yellow flew. Hribar took the lead and while other drivers spun on the tracks slick surface, Hribar kept his car straight and took the win.

Roseen’s grandson Donnie Lofdahl started on the pole and took the lead. Dave Read grabbed the low line and moved next to Lofdahl, but Lofdahl held him off. Dave Mass decided to make his move on Lofdahl, he was successful at stealing the lead. Sabraski went from fifth to third and took second from Lofdahl. Mass hugged the tires and Sabraski ran the cushion as they battled for first. The high side was faster and Sabraski took the lead. After a few cautions, Sabraski pulled away as the green lights clicked on and didn’t look back. Sabraski took the win and the $600 payday.
Bud Martini also had a successful night on May 31. Martini is no stranger to victory lane, but the opportunity to win two features was on his mind. During the Midwest Modified make-up feature, Martini drove past Chad Fouquette and took the lead until the yellow flew. Jeremy Nelson and Denis Czech were working Martini’s bumper for the lead and on the restart,
raised. Zeller led by a nose and took the win marking his 177 overall win of his racing career. Back on Tuesday May 28, the racing community lost a legend. Don Roseen was a long time racer, served on the WISSOTA Board, was President of WISSOTA and continued to work at tracks until his last day. Roseen’s grandson, Donnie Lofdahl, continues to race the #1 car and Friday June 14 was the first Don Roseen Memorial Race Night. The night featured all racing classes, but the WISSOTA Super Stocks were the premier class. The Super’s were given a higher payout sponsored by: Wagmon Bros, Ray’s Auto Body, TRC Race Cars, JNP, Pro Tire of Duluth, Berry Law Offices, Minuteman Press and Bill Siercks.
July will be another great month for the Princeton Speedway. Besides regular racing action, July 19 will be our “Meet the drivers” kid’s night, which features all the drivers and cars on the racetrack for a long intermission. All kids ages 12 and under get free grandstand admission that night and drivers will give photos, candy and other fun items of their choice to the kids. Meet the drivers night is always a great night for the kids, so pack up the car and head to the Princeton Speedway! Racing starts at 7pm.
Martini took off like a bullet. Martini took the win with Czech and Nelson finishing behind him. Jason VandeKamp and Kyle Matuska were chasing Martini in the makeup feature until the yellow waved. Martini was alone on the restart which allowed him to drive away from the competition. Martini took his second win of the night. June 7 was an exciting night for Larry Zeller in his #41 WISSOTA Modified. Zeller took the lead as the green dropped and held off his tough competition. Zeller remained in first through the cautions, and with a few laps to go, he could smell the win. J.B. Stortz however ran at his door and kept Zeller on his toes. Stortz and Zeller were side by side as the checkered was Page 40

n the bowels of a crippled shed, the remnants of a motorcycle lie covered in rust and cobwebs. Squeezing close enough for only a glimpse probably isn't even worth consideration, unless you're Mark Smith or Clint Wicke of MCS Specialties in Forest City, Iowa. They’ll take a look and reach a different conclusion.
I
Smith, owner, and Wicke have now spent four years in their bike restoration and service shop, and they’ll tackle almost any project. “Don’t be scared to cut it apart,” Wicke said about his mentality with any project. “You can always put it back together or fix it. That’s just kind of how I start my day.” Page 48

Wicke, who does most of the restorative work, and Smith, who catalogues parts and handles sales, both enjoy old-time bikes. They’re pickers, looking for rustic, twowheel projects: bikes that need attention and plenty of TLC. “We’re definitely not biased when it comes to bikes around here,” Wicke said. “And I think that’s half the reason it keeps it so fun. One day I might be working on something from the early ‘60s, and the next day I’m working on a new, custom chopper.” For Wicke, it’s gratifying work. The man has a degree in cryogenics, and he uses it for nothing. He continues to work on bikes.
A BARN-FRESH IDEA Four years ago, Smith and Wicke took their auto scrap yard and literally scrapped it. “I actually brought up the idea to Mark,” Clint said. “He was in the mood to switch gears because the auto scrap yard industry was just getting so flooded, and he wanted a change of pace. We looked at each other that day and said, ‘That’s it. We called in a crusher and started crushing a thousand cars right off the bat.” However, they didn’t scrap everything. Smith already had space for the new endeavor: an old barn that now has a paint room and plenty of space for everything MCS Specialties needs. It’s a somewhat fitting setting for Smith, a former farmer who threw in the towel and made a career change. “I used to farm,” Smith said, and joked about his decision. “I got tired of making no money at farming. Of course, now they’re making money.” Furthermore, Smith had an existing parts system that allowed MCS to transition into the new business. Nearly everything is catalogued, and MCS has more than several parts – four floors of them. “There are about 12,000 parts on the shelf, and we have about 6,000 on my website already,” Smith said. In practice, the process is working quite well. Wicke said the bone yard of parts and bikes contains about 70 percent of what he needs at any given time. If somebody else needs parts, MCS is the place to go. The best aspect? It’s all inside – not something

that can be said for most scrap yards. Bikes that sat for years under trees and behind old sheds now have a nice home. “They call it heaven,” Wicke said about customer comments. “It’s literally like walking into a motorcycle heaven. For me, as a builder, it doesn’t get any better.” For others around the world, it’s working quite well, too. Smith has sent parts to China, Japan, Brazil, Chile and other locations he can’t even recall. “You never know where you’re going to send a part,” Smith said.
going to have every amenity ever needed.” More than one adventure One of the best aspects of Smith’s and Wicke’s job is the search. Some people see junk when they look at ancient, lifeless motorcycles. Wicke and Smith see potential – barn-fresh” bikes, as Smith says it. The duo is constantly on the lookout for motorcycles. Other times, the bikes just come to them. They’ve dug old junkers out of some tight spots. All about custom Wicke takes pride in his custom projects, which have ranged from some of the oldest Hondas to brand-new choppers. He’s even customized two motorcycles for this magazine. “It’s always something different around here,” Wicke said. Whether Wicke a flips a bike he pulled out of a pile of junk or completes a project for a customer, he goes big. Fear of failure isn’t a concern.
“We’ve dug bikes out of hay piles before,” Wicke said. “We found two bikes in a barn. A guy called up and said, ‘Hey, we want these out of here.’” One of those two bikes simply joined the others in the bone yard. The other is fully restored, and someone in Europe now enjoys it. Wicke takes pride in the fact his work is seen by others around the world. Another time, when Wicke and Smith bought a few bikes from an auction com-
pany, the two ran into a lot more than they expected. “His bikes were stacked like cord wood,” Smith said about the sheer number of machines. Even for the bike MCS Specialties won’t restore, though, there is a home in the bone yard. Wicke has instant access to a growing stock of bikes, currently at about 400. There are Hondas, Kawasakis, Yamahas, Suzukis, BSAs, Nortons, BMWs, Harleys, Hodakas and even Bridgestones and more. Despite having that many bikes, Wicke would like to increase the stockpile to a thousand. He knows the jobs will only grow more interesting over time, and end up in farther corners of the Earth. Regardless of what Wicke is working on, he remembers one thing: “If two people have it, then it’s not custom,” he said. MCS Specialties, 641-581-4000, is located at 2664 330th St., Forest City, Iowa, and is online at www.mcsspecialties.com.
“If they can put it in a car, I’ll find a way to make it work on a bike,” Wicke said. “If there’s a will, there’s a way.” In June, he worked on six projects, including a custom chopper, a jet ski and what he considered a “Honda Davidson.” Obviously some of the projects can be quite strange. Wicke’s Honda Davidson is bagger with a six speakers and even a TV screen, which also works as a reverse camera, like those in newer cars. “Pretty much what I’m building is the perfect woman’s bagger,” Wicke said. “It’s smaller in caliber, but at the same time, it’s Page 50
