B

ob Bode has fueled his machines and team down both water and pavement with his family owned business. This racing family does not slow down – between running AR-BEE Transparent, Bob’s family stays busy shaping the next racer of the family, his son, Bobby. Even though Bob was at a race, he found a spare second to give us some insight into how a racing legend is built.

WOT // HOW WAS RACING INTRODUCED INTO YOUR LIFE?

WOT // WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST OFFICIAL BOAT RACE LIKE?

BODE \\ Watching races as a kid sparked my passion for racing! I have been racing my whole life. I raced Powerboats for the APBA (American Power Boat Association) for twenty years, K Boat raced, ran an Asphalt Stock Car for three years, and have been drag racing for my past fifteen years.

BODE \\ It showed me how good the guys we raced against really were. It took me three years to get good enough to win.

WOT // WHAT INTRIGUES YOU MOST ABOUT RACING? BODE \\ I race because every time we take the car or boat to the track it is a new challenge…either a challenge to figure out the race track, or a challenge to beat the guy in the other lane. It’s always new and exciting. WOT // HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH BOAT RACING? BODE \\ I lived on the Chain O’ Lakes in Northern Illinois and bought a flat bottom race boat from a guy on the circuit. But when I tried to use it on the lakes, the police kicked me off, so I had to go to Decatur, Illinois to my first race in the late 80’s to use the boat. I got hooked from there and did it for twenty years. WOT // WHAT TYPE OF BOAT DID YOU RACE? BODE \\ I raced a flat bottom K boat, which is an 18 foot boat with a blown 500 cubic inch Chevrolet. Its top speed was 145 MPH in the straight away – but we raced four laps on a mile and a quarter oval set up with buoys. WOT // WHY BOAT RACING? BODE \\ We lived by a lake and always wanted to be the fastest on that lake!

APR 2015

WOT // WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST BOAT RACING ACCOMPLISHMENTS? BODE \\ I’m a two-time National Champion in Superstock, Eastern Divisional Champion in K Boat, and won Rookie of the Year in my first year of K Boat. WOT // NICE! WERE YOU A PART OF A BOAT RACING TEAM? WHICH ONE? BODE \\ I owned my own race team and drove boats for several other owners during my career. WOT // WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FORM YOUR OWN TEAM?

BODE \\ All of our crew guys love drag racing and are passionate about doing an excellent job. Without the passion and hard work, we could never get the car to the starting line. WOT // WHY DID YOU SWITCH FROM BOAT TO FUNNY CAR? BODE \\ I always thought Funny Cars were way cool. WOT // WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN TRANSITIONING FROM BOAT TO CAR? BODE \\ The hardest part is dealing with how fast things happen in the Funny Car. In the boat, you have about one second to react to trouble, but in the Funny Car, you need to react in a quarter of a second or you could over-rev the engine, hit the wall, or cross the center line – everything happens two or three times quicker.

BODE \\ I went to Pomona and met Funny WOT // DID YOU DO A LOT OF Car legend, Tom Hoover. After sitting “RECREATIONAL” DRAG RACING in the stands, I went down and bought BEFORE GOING PRO? one of Tom’s cars. The vibration of the cars going by convinced me I needed to BODE \\ During my boat racing days, we try it. I have never driven a drag racing would sometimes use the rental cars to vehicle before I bought my first Funny race around the pit area. We never had Car. Luckily, a year later, we had it all put an accident…but did get taken to jail for together and got licensed in 2001. I raced reckless driving. The pit area happened to my first race in Atlanta in 2001…didn’t be on a public park’s parking lot. Myself qualify, but had a great time! and two other drivers went to jail and had to post bond. I was the only one in state, WOT // HOW DID YOU FORM YOUR TEAM? and I had to go to court and was on six months of probation. But it was worth it. BODE \\ My crew all started as friends and It was a lot of fun. most of them were boat racing buddies. We hired a crew chief, Glen Mikres, to show us how to race. The team of guys has changed several times, but we get better every year. The same guys come to each race to crew the car. WOT // WHAT MAKES YOUR TEAM GREAT?

WOT // WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRACK TO DRAG RACE ON? BODE \\ Route 66 Joliet is my favorite because it’s our hometown track and its state of the art! My second favorite is Brainerd because we won our Wally there.

PAGE 5

WOT // WHAT ARE SOME OTHER BIG FUNNY CAR RACING ACHIEVEMENTS? BODE \\ Beating John Force in February of 2015 at Pomona. It took me fifteen seasons to finally beat him. My Brainerd win is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my racing life. WOT // WHAT SKILLS DO YOU EXCEL AT THAT HELP THESE WINS? BODE \\ I’m pretty good at keeping the car in the middle of the race track, even when its moving around on the track and sometimes on fire. WOT // WHAT ELSE MAKES YOU A GREAT RACER? BODE \\ I do not give up until we figure out what the car is doing. It’s always a challenge. WOT // WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST RACE LIKE? BODE \\ We were the first Funny Car on Saturday following dragster qualifying. Kenny Bernstein was the car in front of us, PAGE 6

BODE \\ My favorite part about racing is I get to do it with my whole family – Alice, my wife, and Bobby, my son.

in his Budweiser Dragster, because he was a low qualifier. Being behind him, that million dollar race team…with our new team and very little experience...it was so cool just to be a part of the program. We’re still doing it fifteen years later!

WOT // DO YOU HAVE ANY RACING RITUALS?

WOT // HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCE EVOLVED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF FUNNY CAR RACING?

BODE \\ My only racing ritual is having my wife at the track – she backs me up and always does a good job.

BODE \\ When I first started to race, I joked that not understanding something on the car was voodoo. As the years have gone by, we have learned almost all of the things that can go wrong…so now after fifteen years there’s less voodoo to deal with!

WOT // HOW DOES YOUR WIFE COMPLEMENT YOUR RACING?

WOT // WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT CHALLENGE WHILE RACING? BODE \\ Letting the car run consistently and keeping it within our budget. WOT // WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT RACING?

FIND US ON FACEBOOK “WHEELS OF THUNDER”

BODE \\ My wife, Alice, supports me and Bobby in every crazy racing idea we have. Alice takes care of hospitality at the track and even rides in the dually when we take his Junior across the country. WOT // WHAT MAKES BOBBY A GREAT RACER? BODE \\ Bobby grew up in the sport. He went to his first Funny Car race when he was nine weeks old. WOT // WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR YOU SON, BOBBY, IN RACING? APR 2015

BODE \\ Bobby has been racing Junior Dragster for five years. He has won six Wally’s – two Division Six Championships and two Division Six Race of Champions. He won Route 66 High Point Championship last year! My hopes for Bobby would be for him to drive my Funny Car in 2020 when he turns eighteen. At sixteen, I would like him to try a Nostalgia Funny Car for the experience. He tells me all the time that he would rather drive a Top Fuel Dragster, and I just laugh, and tell him he’ll probably have to drive what we have in the race shop. WOT // WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAMILY’S HOBBIES OFF THE TRACK?

WOT // ON TOP OF THIS, YOU OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS! WHAT DOES AR-BEE TRANSPARENT PRODUCTS, INC. OFFER? BODE \\ We extrude, print, and convert plastic bags at our company in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. WOT // DO YOU HAVE THE TRADITION OF FAMILY IN YOUR COMPANY, TOO? BODE \\ My Dad started it sixty years ago, and my brother and I run it today. The production plant runs twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. We’re always working! WOT // WHAT DO RACING AND OWNING A BUSINESS HAVE IN COMMON?

ten more hours of work. The same is true of business. You never, ever finish. There is always more to do. I guess that’s why we like both so much!

To keep up with Bob on and off the track, check out his page www.bobbode. com where you can get a closer look at the brawns and brains behind his achievements! And don’t forget to check out family owned AR-BEE Transparent at www.arbee.com. //

BODE \\ The similarity between racing and BODE \\ We go snow skiing in Colorado business is that you better like hard work and we Junior Drag Race. I also get to – the car will make you work hard, and play basketball with Bobby when he’s when you think you’re done, you can find practicing for the league he plays in.

any people get their thrill alongside the track with dirt kicking up into the grandstands; others thrive on gripping the racing wheel, and then there are some whose favorite part of the sport is being in the drivers’ pockets. The man who puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to his love for racing is Jimmie Beckwell, founder of JB MotorSports (JBM). Though he’s been in the stands, in the pits, and behind the wheel, Jimmie found his spot in the racing world as a sponsor. And from his team’s incredible achievements, he just may be the good luck charm out there.

WOT // Jimmie, how was racing introduced into your life? JBM // I was very young when I started going to the races at Amsoil Speedway (formerly Superior Speedway) in Superior, Wisconsin. When I got older, I started going to others in Minnesota and Wisconsin, too. I’d go with my dad and mom on Friday nights every week in the summer. It was kind of a tradition. WOT // What was your favorite part about going to the races?

that same year. The following year, I wanted to get one of my own karts, but it was expensive. My maternal grandma knew how badly I wanted to race, so she bought me my first kart and some spare parts to get me started. I raced three more seasons in Pattison Park before the track closed down. Then I raced again for three more years starting in 2000 when a new track on Highway 13 opened up. I won my division championship in 2001, and “retired” in 2002. WOT // What was your first race like?

JBM // Watching my dad’s friends who raced! They were like gods to me. When I was young, around eight years old, I went to ABC Raceway in Ashland, Wisconsin, and I got to go into the pits because of the guy my dad was pitting for. The only reason I got to go in was because there was no one for me to sit with in the grandstands. Later on when I was older, I started going in the pits more regularly with my dad in Superior. It was the coolest thing in the world!

JBM // My first race wasn’t bad. Kart racing was kind of new to the area at the time, so not a lot of people were into it yet. My first race was just me and another young kid. I was out there just driving around! I won my first race, and lost my second because he ran me over. But I won the feature!

WOT // Did you ever spend time behind the wheel?

JBM // I started sponsoring in 2007 when my best friend, Richard Dzelak, Jr., needed a new tire for a big money race in Ashland, Wisconsin. Richard was low on funds, so I gave him one hundred bucks to buy his tire. He and his dad insisted that they put my name on the car to show thanks. I didn’t care either way, but said okay. JB MotorSports was born. My dad, Jim, started getting involved with JB MotorSports a couple of years ago. It has been something we’ve carried on together!

JBM // When I was eleven, I started racing go-karts. I did that for six years. A track was built in Pattison Park in Wisconsin in 1995, and when it was a year old, my dad took there to watch a race. I wanted to race so badly. My dad talked to a family friend whose kids raced karts and asked if they could work something out so I could race their spare kart. They gave the go ahead, and I raced in my first race APR 2015

WOT // Glad you’re on the safer side of the track now! What made you want to make the switch from a racer to a sponsor?

WOT // How do you go about funding your sponsored racers? JBM // I work a regular forty hour a week job helping people at a treatment house. I pay all sponsorships out of my own pocket. What I give them for money isn’t really a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, but, any amount helps in this economy. It’s not about getting anything in return for me. Is it expensive for me to do? Hell yeah. Do people think I’m crazy? You bet! But I don’t care. It’s about helping people in the sport I love. WOT // What do you look for in a racer that you’re going to invest so much into? JBM // First I have to know them. I’ve known all of my guys for several years. A couple of them approached me for sponsorship, and others I have approached. I really do not have any requirements for guys to meet in order to get my support. If I have funds, know them, and it sounds like a good idea, I’ll do it. WOT // What do these racers have to do to keep this sponsorship relationship? JBM // That’s kind of a hard question, because it doesn’t take a lot. But…it’s different for everyone. I look at how they are doing. How they act on the track. Performance helps, but it isn’t a requirement. Do they seem to appreciate it or do they take the money because it’s there? WOT // So who are the lucky racers on your team?

PAGE 13

JBM // Andy Grymala in the #24 Super Stock was with me in 2008 and again in 2010 to present. Chad Carlson in the #21 Pure Stock has been with me since 2011. Matt Deragon in the #27 Pure Stock has been with me since 2012. Cody Carlson in the #32III Midwest Modified has been with me since 2013. Forrest Schultz in the #7s Six Cylinder has been with me since 2013. Tim Carbon in the #14 Pure Stock has been with me since 2014. The Pure Stocks race each other which can get tense for me! This season will be the third straight year that I have sponsored five racers, and the second consecutive year that I have sponsored six drivers. Richard Dzelak, Jr., was with me until he left after the 2010 season. Richard won the first eleven races for JB MotorSports, and just had his first child a few weeks ago, a little girl! WOT // Well congrats to you, Richard! Jimmie, it sounds like you have close relationships with all of your racers. What is it like off the track?

JBM // Seeing that I helped their dream happen. WOT // They all sound pretty awesome, but who is your dream racer to sponsor? JBM // Wow, I’ve never thought about that! I would say Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Also, a rookie named Chase Elliott. His dad is retired NASCAR driver, Bill Elliott. Chase is young, but he is going to be great in NASCAR’s top division. Dale Earnhardt, Sr., was god to me. He was the greatest ever. But when he died in 2001, Junior was only in his second full year, so I stuck with him. Chase will probably be who I follow when Junior retires. WOT // I bet they could contribute some nice accomplishments to your team. What are some of the biggest achievements already cemented on your team?

JBM // Over the years, starting with Richard’s first ever win at Superior in 2008 to Matt’s win in the season finale in Ashland this past season, JBM drivers JBM // I’m good friends with them all, but have collected 35 feature wins. Richard Forrest and Tim live near Ashland so I had four feature wins in a row in Superior don’t see them much outside of the track. in 2010, and Matt won eight features in Andy and I are especially close because Ashland in 2014, including a streak of five we’ve known each other for nearly twenty won in a row which is a track record. Four years. We met while racing go karts drivers got their first career feature wins together. He’s a couple of years younger while sponsored by JBM. Richard’s 2008 than me, so we only raced against each first feature win was very special because other for about one season (I beat him in it was JBM’s first win, too. DJ Keeler had our first race together!), but we remained his first in 2011; Matt’s was in 2012, and close friends. He also just had his first Cody’s in 2014. Last year was our biggest child…a little boy! Chad and I have a winning season to date…a total of nine strong bond from when I pitted for him wins! JBM has sponsored drivers during for about six years. Cody has always been four championship seasons…Richard’s my friend, and Matt is a great friend as in 2009 and 2010, Matt’s in 2012 and well. They are all pretty awesome guys. 2014. All of the JB MotorSports drivers, WOT // What’s the best part about past and present, have a total of eight championships to their credit. Chad sponsoring them? and Tim both won two before I started sponsoring them. They all have done quite well! PAGE 14

FIND US ON FACEBOOK “WHEELS OF THUNDER”

WOT // That is awesome you’re a part of these achievements. What would you say your biggest personal achievement as a sponsor has been? JBM // Knowing that I’m helping the people that I care about. I have always tried to help people in any way that I can. I got it from my dad’s parents who are always helping with things. My grandma that passed away in 2013 was a huge supporter of JB MotorSports. She was so encouraging. She loved hearing my stories about how everyone did over the weekend. She watched my racers, Andy and Cody, grow up. She especially enjoyed hearing about them. She never met Tim, Matt, or Forrest, but she liked Chad! He always made her laugh. After she passed away, all the guys had a memorial sticker on their cars for her. It really meant so much to me for them to put the memorial sticker on their cars. It was Cody’s idea to do the stickers; his graphics guy designed them, and my dad and I gave the thumbs up. I dedicate all of the success of 2014 and beyond to my grandma.

Jimmie continued to humbly tell me about all of the support he has had, calling his dad his saving grace. His dad really helped ease the last few years by putting his money and time also into these guys. Helping people is a Beckwell tradition… it is no surprise that Jimmie merged this gift with his passion. 2016 will be JBM’s tenth season, and he is going to do something special. Get over to Superior, Wisconsin’s Amsoil Speedway to keep following this team to see how it will be celebrated, and to see a whole lot of wins! In the meantime, you can keep up with JB MotorSports at www.facebook.com/ JBMotorSports85. //

BY BILLY BO

\\ SPRING BRAKE // SPRING HAS SPRUNG. The sites, the sounds and the smells of spring or as it is known in the biking community skimpy attire, revving engines and the sweet smell of two-wheeled exhaust. Yes, my friends it has finally arrived warmer weather, longer days and the infamous obstacles left over from the long cold winter also known as POTHOLES. The bikes are hitting the road, hopefully not “hitting” the road as in scrapes, rash and breaks. Those pesky caters can be anywhere which means making those bike maneuvers like something out of a James Bond movie. To make those matters worse let’s throw a small beach of sand that the city, state and county plows dropped like a crop duster in flight. The hazards of spring, especially those days before the seasonal cleanup by street sweepers, volunteer cleanup groups and repaired potholes with cheap blacktop. The first days of riding have factored in a higher number of fatalities, major road rash and bikes beyond repair. This is my seasonal tip on how to avoid and prevent an unnecessary crash or rash.

SAND ON THE BEACH

One of the biggest hazards in those first days of dry roads is the remnants of the droppings by the snow plows during the winter months, mainly sand. Trying to brake or taking a tight turn can put a bike and it’s rider on their side. The most common places for accumulation of old winter sand is on the bottom or top of a highway exit ramp, the turn lanes (anywhere), the mouth of driveways or the brake down lanes. I have seen many a PAGE 26

biker, and that includes bicycles, go down in a heap. Until the sweepers have been out an about several times, be cautious. Watch out for those mentioned areas and keep it moderate speed.

CRATER ALERT

In the Midwest it’s a “gimmee” that the wonderful roads we travel are going to take a beaten over the long cold winter. The result is erosions, cracks, road fatigue and lastly “Potholes”. I once heard about the Colorado Lobbyist that was a proponent of legalizing “POT” stated that some states have already taken the step forward to legalization. His platform was the state of Minnesota has an abundance of “Pot Holes” in place. Really, the fact is we do have our share of potholes. Some of these craters are big enough to cause significant damage to the underside of your vehicle, blown tires, busted axels etc.

BOOM, BOOM, BOOM – ITS ALL ABOUT THE BASS

Have you ever heard off in the distance what sounds like a DJ party with the bass blasting loudly and the shaking of metal and glass? In addition to physical road hazards the hazards of inattentive drivers is the number cause of those fatalities involving two wheeled and 4 wheeled vehicles. I recall an accident that I came upon in 2012 where the driver laid on the median strip with a sheet of over him; his passenger laid a short distance away screaming uncontrollably. The passenger’s right leg from the knee down was mangled beyond attachment. Also on the median was the driver that struck them, a twenty year old “boy” that was explaining he never seen or heard them as he took a left hand turn from the right hand lane. There was good reason that he never heard them, as the onsite investigator turned on the “boy’s” rod the bass was so loud it drowned out the ambulance that was leaving with the passenger. The sad part of this accident the husband and wife had taken the bike out on a nice sunny Wednesday afternoon to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. The “boy” will suffer those consequences his entire life. The moral of the story, “Loud Bikes Save Lives”, but you are now contending with Db Bass Inferno Speakers.

The downside is a rider on two wheels unsuspectingly coming upon this obstacle of Mother Nature and taking the sudden brunt full force with results that will be favorable for the rider or the bike. This scenario, my friends, has been the root cause of many of horrible accidents involving solo bikes. The best thing to do is if you come upon the pothole brace yourself and power through it. If possible try to avoid it all together if you have sufficient space to maneuver left or right. The difficulty is making the decision to FATAL DISTRACTION turn at the very last minute that’s when bikes go down or you have now involved The American Automobile Association a secondary hazard the bike or vehicle also known Triple A or AAA recently published a report that analyzed 6842 traveling beside you. videos that were mounted in vehicles to

study and coach drivers on improving their driving behaviors. AAA was able to view 1691 videos from vehicles that were involved in crashes involving young, inexperienced and inattentive drivers. The top three categories was talking, texting or reviewing text messages. The other behaviors found were looking away from the road at something in the vehicle (radio station or IPod), singing or moving to music, putting makeup on and reaching for an object. All of these accidents could have easily been the fatal one, whether you are riding a bike or a car. I am sure we can all relate to a relative, friend or neighbor that has been on the short end of a distracted driver. I can give you the short version of three. FATALITY #1 A 62 year old biker out on the first nice day of the spring was traveling on a frontage road at 20 MPH. A 17 year old girl driving a pickup while texting, turned in front of him. He struck the vehicle broadside and launched over the entire pickup. He smashed his head on the curb and died on the scene. The extent of his injury was so severe a helmet may or may not have saved his life.

The sudden collision releases the air bags quickly, when she realizes what has happened excitedly she grabs for her son on the passenger side of the van. The force of the air bags on a small frame 10 year old decapitated the young boy. Horrible, horrible scene for all those involved. In all three cases all were in the spring, all were distracted and all said those infamous words, “I am sorry”.

road. Watch out for everyone, beside you, behind you, during a turn and coming at you in a direct path. The Midwest spring is one of the prettiest times of the year, don’t be afraid of absorbing those memorable sights, sounds and smells. Put the leathers on, position the Wiley-X sunglasses, slide on the gloves and adjust them finger by finger and the rev that engine. Enjoy the ride when you hit the road. But please don’t “hit the road”. Drive safe and watch out for the other drivers. //

EXPERIENCE DOESN’T MATTER

I have been around bikers for a good portion of my life. Many of my friends and family that are bike enthusiasts, consider themselves seasoned experts and I would agree with them whole heartedly. The problem is not the seasoned biker. It is the young, the inattentive, the speeder, the mobile DJ or the inebriated driver that is the main culprit. I gave you the tips on the physical obstacles, but I can only give you this good advice, when you are on the

FATALITY #2 A nice suburban family on their way to the family dentist appointment. They stop for a school bus to let the neighborhood kids off. Unsuspectingly, they are rear-ended by another 17 year old who was reaching to change a “cassette tape”. Normally the accident would have been a mere fender bender, but this time the back seat occupant was the 12 year old son. The boy snapped his head violently from the collision and literally separated the base of his brain and died immediately. FATALITY #3 A soccer mom is driving her son to practice – they are late and it is rush hour traffic on the highway. The mom has an allergy and keeps the Kleenex box on the console. The stop and go traffic causing the Kleenex box to drop on the driver’s side under her right leg. The mom reaches down to grab the Kleenex box not realizing the traffic has come to a complete stop. She rear ends the vehicle in front, but its only 20 MPH no big deal. APR 2015

AMSOIL CHAMPIONSHIP SNOCROSS GRAND FINALE // MARCH 13-15, 2015 – LAKE GENEVA, WI

Carlson Motorsports/Polaris’ Ryan Springer, in only his second year racing pro snocross, wrapped up the Pro Lite title here today at Lake Geneva’s Grand Geneva Resorts & Spa - the annual running of the Nielsen Enterprises Grand Finale, presented by Dayco Grand Finale. But it was Elias Ishoel (Warnert Racing/Ski-Doo) who won Sunday’s Pro Lite main event, completing the weekend sweep in front of a massive live crowd and legions of motorsports fans watching “Live” on CBS Sports.

reigning king of snocross, Tucker Hibbert, wouldn’t quite transpire like it did the previous two nights at Grand Geneva as Hibbert grabbed the Stud Boy Holeshot and, for all intents and purposes, was gone after lap one. Kamm would deal Hibbert his only defeat of the weekend, albeit a minor one in the opening race of heat one. Hibbert got caught up and forced out of the fast line in the holeshot, with Kamm taking the lead and holding off a late-race Hibbert charge for the heat race win. But that would be Hibbert’s only blemish on a near perfect weekend of racing for the overall Pro Open champ.

And in the premier Pro Open class it was again Tucker Hibbert (Monster/ Ram/Arctic Cat) on top of the podium, completing his 1st/1st/1st weekend sweep of Lake Geneva and further solidifying his title as the best professional snowmobile “It feels amazing,” said Hibbert. “To solid weekend and come out with three wins is racer on the planet. exactly what we wanted. It’s been a long PRO OPEN // Foreshadowing what season and we’ve had a lot of success, but looked to be a battle between the heir to finish it off this way is just icing on the apparent to the Pro Open throne, Hentges cake for the whole team.” Racing/Polaris’ Kody Kamm, and the PAGE 32 FIND US ON FACEBOOK “WHEELS OF THUNDER”

Hibbert pulled the Stud Boy Holeshot in the Pro Open main, rocketing to the lead up Grand Geneva’s Mountain Top ski hill - with veteran rival Ross Martin (Judnick Motorsports/Polaris) close behind in 2nd place, followed by Warnert Racing/SkiDoo’s John Stenberg. As the front runners separated from the rest of the pack, Kamm was back in 5th place behind Mystic/Loctite/Polaris’ Kyle Pallin. Hibbert would reel off a couple fast laps, putting seven seconds between himself and 2nd place Martin, while Kamm put on a charge of his own and moved into 3rd place by out-jumping Stenberg on the middle downhill section. As Hibbert increased his lead, Martin rode solid in 2nd and was not going to be caught by Kamm (3rd). Stenberg would complete an excellent race in 4th, with Pallin holding strong in 5th.

PRO LITE // While sixteen-year-old Norwegian Elias Ishoel dominated the slopes of Lake Geneva, it was Ryan Springer that wrapped up the season-long Pro Lite championship, laying claim to AMSOIL Championship Snocross’ prestigious support class crown in only his second year of pro snocross racing.

“I never thought I’d get this far so soon,” said an elated Springer, who wrapped up the title during his heat races and raced the Pro Open class today at Lake Geneva, crashing out in the LCQ. Quite literally unstoppable at Lake Geneva, Ishoel wowed the CBS Sports fans with a brazen look back pass - for the Pro Lite main event lead - on Andrew Carlson (Carlson Motorsports/ Polaris). The lap four (of six) pass came on the main uphill section when Ishoel out-jumped Carlson into the corner, passed him, then held on as Carlson ran him (Ishoel) up high on the berm. Ishoel would send up a wall of roost, forcing Carlson to duck below his visor as he towed Carlson to the pinnacle of Mountain Top ski hill. Out front for good, Ishoel put the hammer down and distanced himself from the rest of the field. Travis Muller (Cottew Racing/ Polaris), who also challenged Carlson for the race lead early, would move up past Carlson (3rd) for 2nd place late in the contest. James Johnstad (Judnick Racing/Polaris) would put in another solid effort on the weekend, placing 4th, with Canada’s Maxime Taillefer (AMSOIL/Scheuring/Ski-Doo) placing 5th. Overall, Ishoel’s 1st/1st effort at Lake Geneva propelled him all the way up to 2nd place in the Pro Lite standings behind Springer (tied with Carlson at 542 points, 2nd based on more wins). And with his 2nd place finish Muller moved up to 4th place in the standings (from 5th), one spot ahead of Trevor Leighton (Leighton Motorsports/Polaris). //

SUBURBAN SNO-HAWKS The Suburban Sno-Hawks snowmobile club started in October of 1970. It was organized to promote safe snowmobiling on marked trails. Like all Wisconsin snowmobile clubs, our club members contact landowners for permission to use their land for trails. We mark them, maintain them, and clean them up at the end of the season. Our 46th annual snowmobile races are held the last Sunday of January. This year the club and its affiliates worked overtime to truck in snow to build both the oval and drag tracks, due to recent warm weather. Heavy equipment operators in the club worked through the night to create a safe, fast, high quality snow track. With the help of some freezing temperatures overnight, we had out best conditions for our racers in years. Racers from all over the Midwest competed - Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and all over the state of Wisconsin. The crowd was treated to four lane drag racing in the morning followed by our ovals in the afternoon. Our feature race, “Dash for Cash,” sponsored by Road Track & Trail, is a 10 lap oval race with up to 10 participants. This years winner was Kevin Smith, Hartland, WI. // PAGE 42
