Picture 10,000 square feet of the coolest gym you have ever seen. Picture CrossFit on steroids. Throw in a little ninja warrior. What do you get? Get Fast Inc., a unique, top-notch sports performance training center. Get Fast is THE place to be if you want to become the best athlete you can be. But you have to be willing to work, and I mean work really hard, because owner Dave Dever and his team don’t mess around. Dever was born in Quebec, Canada in 1968 to American parents, James and Shirley, who were there learning French in preparation for a move to Zaire, Africa. “They sold everything they had and went all in,” explains Dever. “It was more than a missions trip.” Dever spent his early years living a very different lifestyle than most of us can even imagine. “We didn’t know it, but we were poor. I mean really poor. We basically lived in the African bush. It was a different kind of upbringing.” The family returned to the states in 1974 with full intentions of returning to Africa but Idi Amin (a.k.a., the Butcher of Uganda) had taken over and it was not safe to go back. “My parents had originally planned to stay 10 years minimum but they had a really hard time getting visas to get out of Zaire to come back to the U.S. for 6 months. Between that, how far my brother and I would be behind in school, and how bad things were in Zaire, they decided they wouldn’t return.” The family lived in the Glen Ellyn, Illinois area. Dever grew up playing a variety of sports but primarily was a football and track athlete. After high school, while studying kinesiology and exercise physiology, Dever worked for a couple of orthopedic surgeons who opened a fitness gym. Dever credits his mentors for helping him get where he is today. “The opportunity to work with those doctors was a really neat because they were incredibly sports minded. They even started their own rehab for athletes that took them far beyond normal rehab. It really helped formulate some of my ideas and showed me that you can do something kind of off the beaten path if you do it right and you do it well.” PAGE 4

In 1993, Dever decided it was time to go off on his own and open “a more athlete focused performance gym” and Get Fast Inc. was born. As a trainer, Dever discovered that he had to adapt quickly to being a businessman as well. “Things grew so fast. I had to learn to hire and manage people and continue growing my business while also being the program director and lead trainer.” Today, he operates two Get Fast locations and oversees a staff that includes seven full time trainers. The Get Fast training program focuses on producing significant improvements in size, strength, speed, agility, and overall fast twitch muscle fiber recruitment and general conditioning levels for athletes from a variety of different sports ranging from Basketball to Lacrosse (12 in all). Dever’s commitment and dedication to his clients has attracted many pro athletes, including members of the Chicago Blackhawks and the Chicago White Sox. “We’ve had 170 professional athletes come through our program,” says Dever. But don’t think that Get Fast is only for the pros. They have programs for athletes of all levels and all ages. For those not at the pro level, Dever jokes that you only need to “have a screw loose to come to Get Fast.” This type of training is not for everyone. If you are looking to come and spend 30-45 minutes on the treadmill and lift a couple of weights, this isn’t the place for you. But, if you are a little crazy and willing to really push yourself, Get Fast delivers results. Dever promises that his clients will never be bored and will always be challenged. “It’s good to be a trainer with ADD because you’re forced to find new, fun ways to do things all the time to keep yourself entertained. I like to have a goal and seven different ways to accomplish it. Our training center is probably the hardest work you will do but it’s also a lot of fun.” Pro snocross Kyle Pallin can testify to that. “I went to check out the facility and see what the training would be like and I remember telling some of my friends, I’ll either be the toughest kid on the track or I’m going to die! It was so much more gnarly than anything I’d ever done.” Besides training athletes in a wide variety of sports, Dever also points out that Get Fast is one of the few places young athletes can train. “When we are training pros, we are also training over a hundred 8-12 year olds at the same time. We provide safe modalities and safe formats for them that they can’t get anywhere else. Many travel long distances for the opportunity. I have 10 and 11 year old snocross racers that travel 6-7 hours from Lake City, MN to train for a couple days at a time.” Snocross training at a gym? Yes! (This next part is for all you sled heads out there.) It all started in 2010 when Dever, an avid snowmobile rider/racer himself, saw that no one was catering to training snocross athletes. “I was working with Kyle Pallin at the time. When I went up to visit him right before that AUG 2016

first season started, I realized he hadn’t been on a sled yet and he was 10 days away from racing in Duluth,” recalls Dever. “I thought to myself, I have thousands of other athletes in my program that have weeks and months of preparation. They’re able to go live at practice. Whether they’re a wide receiver running routes and getting tackled or a baseball player taking live pitches at top speed. But the snocross guys can’t do that. They show up, maybe run a few practice laps and then its go time. It’s such a vicious sport and I thought, where’s the preparation? How can we fix this?” The thought stuck in Dever’s head and eventually he came up with an idea. “My original thought was to create something like a sled on a mechanical bull. I needed a way to bring the same forces experienced on the course to the snocross athlete’s body in June and July so they could be better prepared for their season.” All the pieces started falling into place about 3 years ago when he met Ken Neubauer, owner of American Metalcraft Industries. Neubauer’s son Eddie had just started training at Get Fast and during one of their visits he noticed Dever’s notebook of sketches. “He asked me what it was. I told him, it’s a device I’m working on to train snocross athletes in June and July when there’s no snow.” This peaked Neubauer’s curiosity so he asked to borrow the drawings. Neubauer says he took the chassis of sled and built a framework and linkage based on Dever’s designs, rider positions and input from Eddie. “About two and half weeks later, I had a very rough design fabricated and in my facility!” says Dever. “Ken brought my ideas to life.” Dever had the device in place but needed a name for the invention.

“I thought about what the purpose of the device is and that’s to put athletes on the podium. We want to win podiums but it needed to be edgier than Podium Winner. I kept mulling it over and Dragon Slayer came to mind and then I had it, Podium Slayer.” Over time they nicknamed “the can ride a dirt it’s not the same,” enables you to again whereas while practicing the summer).”
made improvements, including adding a piece Machete” for setting up and practicing turns. “You bike, quads, or whatever else to stay in practice but points out Neubauer. “Training on the machine put the body in a particular position over and over you might only see that body position once or twice on a course (and never in

only one component of the Podium Slayer training the Get Fast philosophy, it also includes a personalconditioning program, which includes, advanced ment, core strength, joint stability, VO2 max testing index.
Dever sums up the philosophy behind the Podium Slayer program on the Get Fast website. “It’s about time that riders be trained to avoid injuries, conditioned to dominate throughout a race and be strong enough to force the positioning of their machine on and off the track and snow. Utilization of state of the art facilities, equipment and the Podium Slayer program provide riders a tangible change at strength and conditioning levels that are superior to anything previously offered.” Dever knows you can’t be on the podium if you’re lying at home with a blown out knee or broken collarbone. That’s why he pushes his athletes to be in top physical condition to avoid injury. “It’s probably 60% of what I do. The other 40% is improving prowess on the track, aggressiveness, and mental tenacity.” The results of the Dever’s training methods are impressive. Take Pallin for example. The first season he started working with Dever, he moved from Michigan to Illinois and totally dedicated himself to training. Dever says Pallin went from 151 lbs. to 170 lbs. and “just became a machine.” He went pro that year and ended the season ranked 11th. Pallin credits Dever with much of his success of that year. “Making the jump from semi-pro to pro is a really big step. When I started to hit my groove about mid-season my training really started paying off. I noticed I was much stronger than most of my competitors, especially from the middle to the end of the race. I had way more endurance.” He also points out importance of the mental training. “I didn’t quite understand it when Dave told me I would be mentally changed as well as physically changed by the training. But after surviving such rigorous training I understood. I had so much more confidence in myself and what I could do as far as my abilities and my strength.” Pallin continued training with Dever and ended the following season ranked 7th overall. Today he continues to climb in ranking and is one of the most well known snowcross racers in the sport. Eddie Neubauer has seen results too. Originally Eddie came to Get Fast on a recommendation from Pallin. He needed a place to rehab from an appendix surgery and soccer injuries and wanted somewhere with sports oriented training. After rehabbing, he progressed into race training. “Dave’s training is really intense,” says Eddie. “He has his own scientific way of how he goes about training. It’s more than just lifting weights and cardio. It prepares you not just physically, but mentally too.” Eddie has relied on both the physical and mental training to get through a serious knee injury and reconstruction. He finally raced a full season last year and says he looks forward to another one this year. “We are moving up to Pro-lite this year so it’s a big step, but I’m ready.” PAGE 8

Dever says he fully believes that there will be a point in time when the Podium Slayer determines who is going to be on the podium. “Little by little, the drivers we train are moving up and moving up fast. We’re getting enough people in the program now that it may determine all 3 positions on the podium.” In fact, the program is attracting so much attention that he created a Sled Racer Trainer Facebook page to cater to snocross athletes. “The page has almost 2,700 world-wide followers. There are followers from Norway, Sweden, Russia and Canada, as well all across the U.S.,” says Dever. “And more and more of them are coming here to train with us. The social media platform has really helped spread the word about what we have to offer. On any given day I can wake up a find that a post or video that has been shared hundreds of times in many translations.” It’s not just snocross racers using the Podium Slayer program. It’s very adaptable ice oval, cross country and motocross racers. Who knows, we may see the next Tucker Hibbert or Blair Morgan emerge from under the tutelage of Dever. The Podium Slayer program is a perfect example of how the Get Fast training philosophy has evolved over the past sixteen years. “We still stand firm on our original foundation of beliefs based on safety, intensity, and productivity but we have kept an open mind to include portions of a variety of methodologies and training techniques.” What Dever will come up with next is anyone’s guess. But you can bet that with his vision and commitment to excellence, he will get there fast! Locations: 1900 E Tyler Rd Ste. 300 St. Charles, IL 60174 630-549-7830

aydence ayden has been taking first place podiums and slinging hole-shots for three years now, and that’s half a lifetime of practice and dedication for this six-year-old hailing from New Richmond, Wisconsin. As a first-generation racer, Kaydence on the #97 DRR has been having the time of her life meeting friends and consistently improved lap times on the track. She shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, but took a minute with her father, “Papa” Tony, to answer a few questions I think we all have about her career!

WOT // How was Kaydence introduced to riding? TONY // Her Uncle Chad had an old Polaris Predator 50 sitting around that he bought for his own daughter several years before. He gave that to her right around the time Kaydence turned three years old. WOT // Was racing ever in Kaydence’s life before she received her Polaris? TONY // It never was. I grew up in the suburbs and never did any motorsports, so it wasn’t passed to her that way. WOT // Kaydence, what made you want to start riding? KAYDENCE // I have so much fun is why I want to ride! WOT // Who taught you how to ride? KAYDENCE // My Papa taught me how to ride. He would run beside me all over the driveway hitting the brakes and turning the handle bars for me because I didn’t know what I was doing back then. I just hit the gas and let it rip! WOT // Has she attended any rider’s courses on top of your training? TONY // She went to the Root River Racing camp AUG 2016
down in Splendora, Texas last winter. Kaydence has done a couple of local schools at the Motokazi track in Jordan, Minnesota in the last couple of years and also at Spring Grove Motocross with Haedyn Mickelson and Mike Barnhardt. WOT // What made Kaydence want to start competing? TONY // I looked into Kid’s Motocross after seeing how much she loved to ride at home and brought her to the track. She had so much fun and we never looked back after that! After it was introduced to her, it was the fun that made the decision. WOT // What were some of the most important things for her to focus on when learning? TONY // She mostly had to focus on controlling the throttle and speed. After a while she figured out how to turn and at least went in circles on her own. WOT // What natural talent did you see in Kaydence at the start? TONY // She really knew how fast she wanted to go and could control that. It has always amazed me that she was able to grasp that at such a young age!
WOT // Kaydence, what would you say are some of your best racing skills? KAYDENCE // The best part of my race is the hole shot. It’s my favorite part and I’m starting to beat the older boys to the hole shot in the Stock Class. WOT // What is your favorite part of racing? KAYDENCE // My favorite part about racing is seeing my friends at the track. TONY // We have met several people not only from all around the state but all around the country as well. We have become very close to a couple families that live hours away that we never would have met without racing. I think that’s my favorite part, too.
WOT // Who are your sponsors and what roles do they play in Kaydence’s racing career? TONY // Jim’z Auto Repair out of Princeton, Minnesota, and G-Force Power Sports out of Palm Beach, Florida. Jim built both of her quads and helps me a lot with maintenance, performance and teaching me everything about these machines. I’ve never done this before so we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jim. G-Force is the leader in mini-quad sales, parts, technical support, and trackside support at national races. This is where we bought both of her quads and all the parts. We get a 15% discount and full track support since she is a G-Force team rider. If you’re looking to get your kid started in this awesome sport, this place should be your first call (1-800-658-1843). PAGE 14
WOT // Tony, what do you see as her strongest asset in racing? TONY // Being in complete command of her machine. Although she has increasingly been getting out of her comfort zone recently, she is never out of control of her quad. I think that says a lot since she physically can’t even start her machine yet. I think the most impressive thing about her on the track is how much she improves constantly. Her lap times are continuously dropping every week. WOT // What do you like better about your new DRR Quads compared to your Polaris Predator 50? KAYDENCE // I love both my DRR’s way more because they are a lot faster and have way more power. I also like the shocks much better, too. They help me go through the whoops really fast. WOT // What machine is next in store? TONY // Woah! Let’s slow down! She just turned six and she got a new DRR 70 last fall. Two Quads is plenty for now! She can’t jump into a 90 until she’s

eight years old, so we have a couple of more years on the 50. It’ll either be a DRR 90 or a Shifter Quad if she’s ready for that when the time comes. WOT // What’s Kaydence’s dream machine to have someday? KAYDENCE // I want an Elsa Quad someday. TONY // I don’t even know what that means, but the new decals will get us as close to it as we can. I guess. WOT // Where was her first race? TONY // Her first time at a race was at Cambridge MX in Cambridge, Minnesota, Memorial Day Weekend 2014. She was four years old. WOT // What did you think of your first race, Kaydence? KAYDENCE // I was really scared for my first race. The jumps are big! WOT // What was her first race like? TONY // Her first race was an experience. She was

just putzing around the track because Kaydence only goes as fast as Kaydence wants to go. She got lapped by everyone, but had the time of her life. Before we even left the facility she asked when we were coming back! WOT // How many races does Kaydence have under her little belt? TONY // Way too many to count. She’s raced almost every weekend from May until October since 2014. She’s even done some ice racing on her Quad last year and raced Snocross for a season. Continue page 16

WOT // What are some of her stats? TONY // She did win the District 23 Semi-Stock, 4-8, season championship her first year in 2014! This year she made her first real podium with a third place finish at the Spring Creek national in Millville with a third place finish in the Semi-Stock, 4 - 8, 50cc class. We were pretty excited about that. WOT // What do you do to prepare for a race? KAYDENCE // I’m usually playing with my friends. My Papa takes care of the rest. WOT // Who is your favorite racer? KAYENCE // My favorite racer is my friend, Beau Tibbets. TONY // Beau races Quads and is also on the WOT Snocross team. We both enjoy attending the Snocross races to watch him. WOT // Where is your favorite place to race? KAYDENCE // My favorite track is Cambridge MX. I know that track really good and I go my fastest there. WOT // What are some of your goals as a racer? KAYDENCE // I just want to have fun and I want to beat the boys! Girls Rule, Boys Drool! WOT // Agreed. What other goals do you have for when you get older? KAYDENCE // When I grow up I wanna be a pet store owner. WOT // What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re not racing? KAYDENCE // I like playing hockey, downhill skiing, ski jumping, practicing karate (I’m a Blue Belt), playing t-ball, swimming and roller skating. To keep up with Kaydence Hayden’s budding racing career, you can check out www.gforceriders.com or Tony’s Facebook where he posts exciting videos, most notably the awesome hole-shot ones! // PAGE 16

Advanced Automotive Care, Inc.
N
ic is a third generation auto technician that delivers his talent out of his family owned and
operated shop, Advanced Automotive Care, located in St. Francis, Minnesota. After nearly two decades of servicing the area, Nic continues to keep his technology new but his morals old fashioned with no commission-based sales and a high standard of care, parts made locally, and a staff that has built award winners right in the shop. From every day cars to custom built ones requiring an extra skilled set of hands, Advanced Auto Care ensures that each drives away with a bigger wow factor than when you first drove it home.
WOT // When did you become involved in auto repair? NIC // Like my father, I started in the industry at age 16 when I took my car, truck, and customer service interest to work. My father, Terry Gerhardson, is a second generation automotive technician who worked at his father’s service center in northern Minnesota. We have a potential fourth generation car guy in the works, my son, Brekkett, who arrived this June! WOT // What made your father decide to start Advanced Automotive Care? NIC // My father Terry moved from northern Minnesota to Coon Rapids in 1988 and worked for a couple commission based repair centers. While working for them he noticed the constant need to upsell repairs and parts that weren’t necessarily needed for the vehicles, but the numbers were needed for the shop. He once was told by a shop owner that the customer might not need it now but probably will need it eventually. Terry simply said “no,” packed his tools, and quit on the spot. He knew there was a better way to be honest and trustworthy in this industry. My father wanted to make servicing vehicles about the customer, not about commission sales. WOT // What year did Advanced Automotive Care open? NIC // Terry opened in a small three-bay shop out of his home in 1997. Four years later, the business grew rapidly and relocation was necessary. The St. Francis location opened up in 2001 and there’s potential expansion property that was purchased this year.
WOT // What expansion plans are in the future? NIC // We commonly get asked when we are going to expand because the parking lot is normally full. We recently purchased additional land to potentially expand at our current location. We are always looking at potential business expansion opportunities to help serve additional customers. WOT // How ha s your s hop evolve d s inc e its op e ning? NIC // Manufacturers have slowly tried to make it nearly impossible for the do-it-yourselfer to work on their own vehicles. At the same rate, they have been trying to eliminate independent service providers, trying to force people to take their cars to dealerships for services. That being said, back in 2004/2005 as a company we discussed where we wanted to be for the future. Manufacturers weren’t slowing down and we weren’t going to either. We expanded our tools and have since stayed current in multiple formats of technology. We have laptop based diagnostics and computer reflashing capabilities, and a lot of talent. WOT // What roles do your family fill at Advanced Automotive Care? NIC // We are family owned and operated. As Terry likes to say, he’s got it down to working half days, 7am to 7pm. I run the counter taking care of customers and the behind the scenes work. Lori, my mother, handles payroll.
WOT // How did you learn the behind the scenes of auto repair? NIC // Being raised in the automobile industry led to a lot of love for vehicles at an early age. I knew that alone wouldn’t keep me up with the constant technology changes and advancements in today’s vehicles, so I’ve spent numerous hours every single year in classrooms learning about diagnostic and repair information. It goes along well with my ASE certifications that I renew every five years. WOT // How many employees do you have on staff? What are their backgrounds? NIC // Currently we have seven employees. They have strengths in fabrication, heavy line (motors, transmission, differentials, etc.), suspension and alignments, drive-ability and diagnostics, oil changes and general maintenance. WOT // What is your business motto? NIC // “Setting the bar on repairing your car!” We know there are plenty of places that work on cars. We want to be the destination for all of your vehicle needs. When you get it back, we make sure your transaction is as smooth and seamless as possible. We’ll always give that “wow” factor and have the job done exactly as you’d expect!
WOT // What type of vehicles does Advanced Automotive Care service? NIC // We pride ourselves on having current technology and resources to work on all of today’s vehicles from the “family people mover” to the “weekend cruiser or hot rod.” Daily drivers aren’t our only specialty! We also do in-house fabrication and customization that goes above and beyond bolts on parts and accessories. We have built multiple cars from the ground up. Most recently we did Terry’s 1948 Pontiac Silver Streak
(that when found had a tree growing through the center of it.) Now it’s a multiple car show winner and completed nearly 100% in-house! Currently we’re working on a 1959 Cadillac, 1970 Nova and 1968 Cadillac Convertible.

Sometimes saying a “do-it-all” shop is cliché, but when it comes to your vehicle no matter if it’s new, old, or classic, Advanced is the place to do it all! WOT // Do you obtain vehicle parts locally? NIC // 95% of all parts purchased come from local suppliers, allowing quick delivery times of parts as well as special orders come as soon as the next day. WOT // What type of warranty do you offer?
WOT // What are some benefits your business offers that the chain competition doesn’t? NIC // I’d say a large benefit is our no commission sales. If one of the technicians recommends a repair, it’s in the customer’s best interest. If discounts or additional services are needed above and beyond the initial estimate, customers can feel confident it’ll be done correctly because our technicians take the proper time with customer’s vehicles. We are personable. You’re going to know that the moment you walk in or call; you’ll always have someone you’ve met or seen at the shop before. We have multiple customers that have been with us since the beginning. We have nearly twenty years in the community and are starting to see our original customer’s kids come into our service center. We do our best to get your vehicle back on the road the same day you bring it in. We don’t just offer one brand; we shop around to get you the best quality, price, and availability. We also focus on customization
NIC // Repairs and parts come with at least a one year parts and labor warranty. Many come with lifetime parts and labor warranty. WOT // What is your average turn-around time for repairing a vehicle? NIC // Same day. We try to get your vehicle inside in the morning, checked out, diagnosed, your authorization, parts ordered, serviced, and repaired correctly the first time.
WOT // Do you offer rental vehicles for longterm projects?
WOT // What are some offers or specials currently at Advanced Automotive Care?
NIC // Yes. If a project interferes with your ability to get to and from work, we have a selection of rentalvehicles for you to choose from!
NIC // We have extremely competitive pricing, products and services. We do offer coupons on our website or ads throughout the community. We can also honor most manufacturer rebates on select tires and supplies.
WOT // Do you have your own towing service? NIC // We have a roll back in our fleet and offer local towing. We have other metro area tow companies we work with if we are unable to get your vehicle in a timely manner. WOT // How does your drop off program work? NIC // Dropping off your vehicle is a breeze whether we are open or closed! You can make appointments online on our website (www.advancedautomotivecare.net). We have a key drop off spot in the front door with envelopes next to it. All you have to do is fill out your name, phone number, repairs requested, and place it in the front door. During business hours stop on in and we will get you written up and your vehicle in for service and back to you as soon as possible.
WOT // Do you have any tips for making sure people’s vehicles are running smooth the first time? NIC // On today’s cars, maintenance is key. Failure rates lower when people keep up maintenance, and when they don’t the cost of repair rises. A couple of key notes going into the fall and winter months is to make sure to have your battery tested. Summer heat puts a lot of strain on your vehicle’s battery and when cold weather strikes and cold-cranking-amps are needed, your battery may fail. You may not always have signs of failure, but allowing our trained staff to keep your vehicle ready for anything mother nature throws your way will keep you prepared and well! WOT // Why s houl d c u s t o m e r s c h o o s e Advanced Automotive Care over the competition? NIC // Because we pride ourselves on taking in your interests and needs when it comes to your vehicle. We aren’t going to use scare tactics and make your vehicle feel unsafe so you fix it. If there is a concern that we find that you weren’t aware of we can bring you back and show you or send you pictures. As far as customization and hot rod work, we are hot rod and truck guys! If we aren’t working on them during the week, they are our passions on the weekend. We’ve built from the ground-up and can make that car you had as a kid faster, lighter and safer than it was new.
To have Nic and his crew to get your vehicle in top condition, visit them at 3980 Stark Drive NW, St. Francis, Minnesota. To check out more details on this auto repair shop, go to www.advancedautomotivecare.net! //

PowerPull
Written By </ Kim Moore >
Photographs Provided By </ Rick & Kim Moore >
The Power Pull Nationals in Hutchinson Minnesota are always full of thunder from the highly charged vehicles and lightning explosions from some of the competitors. This year, Mother Nature provided the power in grand form, with strong winds, heavy rains, loud thunder and spectacular lightning. The onset of rain and the storms late Friday afternoon forced the promoters, Ricky and Julie Rose, to cancel the first session of the Power Pull Nationals, much to the dismay of fans and pullers alike. The loss of a hook plus the chance to fine tune their vehicles with only one appearance left before Tomah made for an interesting Saturday Night at the second session.
Saturday welcomed the sun and warm temperatures, helping to dry out the track and the pit areas. Many of the pullers were out early with their vehicles doing some minor maintenance before the session started at 7 pm that night. A couple of new vehicles in the Modified Mini class were being dialed in after runs at Benson, NC. The first of these two vehicles is “Walk The Line” the latest addition to the Koester stable. Larry and Adam Koester had some ideas for new frames and collaborated with Todd Bultman on the design. Adam works for Bob Miner Racing, who builds alcohol supercharged engines for tractor pulling and drag racing. Working with Miner, they tested some new ideas out for the engine and are using “Walk The Line” as a sort of research & development tractor. When a slot became open on the NTPA’s precoommitment list, Larry signed up “Walk The Line” and will now be running it at all the Grand National events. When asked about the name, Larry shared the story about the lineage. Names were thrown around, but his daughter Ashley suggested that this vehicle should be named after a song like the team’s other two vehicles, “Footloose” and “Beast of Burden”. With Larry being a big Johnny Cash fan (sharing that trait with WPI CEO Dave Shreier), “Walk The Line” popped into his head. It fit perfectly into tractor pulling, as you many times walk the sideline as you run down the track. Running three tractors with a limited crew to start the season, Larry remarked that “We are either going to love this new tractor, or we are really going to hate it. Hopefully we are going to really love it.” PAGE 28

s l a n o i t a lN Hutchinson, MN
June 17th & 18th 2016
Terry Jostock, known mostly for his work with his brother Bob’s two Modifieds/Ulimiteds, “Wild Won” and “Wild Child”, decided to build a Modified Mini a year ago when his nine-year-old daughter, Brooke, saw how wild the Minis got at Bowling Green. He figured he had better learn a little bit about them before she gets old enough to drive one. The Jostocks have brought on a new sponsor, Helena Chemical, which helps sponsor the new Mini. They decided to stay with the “Wild” theme and named it “Wild Cat”. The engine is 504 BAE Sassy Veney Hemi with a 1471 Janis Supercharger. Hopefully, Dad can get the kinks worked out of the mini and hopefully Brooke can stand the wait to drive it. The Mini class was up first on the Pit Side track and a large class of 12 tractors would put on a great show. After dialing in the sled after a couple of tractors tested the track, Larry Koester, aboard “Footloose”, made an impressive pass and took the lead and a spot in the Pull Off. Adam Bauer, driving both “Iron Toy” and “Cowboy Up”, made full pull passes and secured spots in the Pull Off as well. There “Footloose” stayed loose and pulled a strong 309.9’. “Iron Toy” would be the only Bauer vehicle to return and came up shy at 308.5’. “Walk The Line” came in fourth, just missing the pull off. Jostock’s “Wild Cat”, also was impressive with a sixth place finish. The Diesel Supers are always a tough class with the likes of Braden Shramek, Steve Burge, Travis Schlabach, and many others. However, it was the 12-time Grand National Champion Esdon Lehn, along with his “Red Line Fever” tractor that would be triumphant tonight, but not before it was earned. Esdon was the first puller in the class after a reset and took his “Red Line Fever” out the other end. Jody Ross, aboard “Triple Bypass”, would be the only other Super Stock to get into the Pull Off with most of the other class falling below the 300’ line. In the two man showdown, Lehn was up first and made another spectacular pass, finishing at 320.5’. “Triple Bypass” made a competitive pass as well and came up just short of Red Line Fever by 0.4’. The win had special meaning as Esdon has been fighting cancer but was cleared to pull this season. After his winning run, he was asked if he enjoyed the ride. He said, “Immensely! I got to think about this for the last three AUG 2016

months, especially that month I was in the hospital and I never dreamt it would come out this good.” His prognosis, “Looking good, I’m just doing preventive maintenance, like we do on a pulling tractor, that’s what they keep telling me. Hopefully in November, I get my green light.” Good Luck Esdon in your fight! A large class of 26 Modified Four Wheel Drive Trucks put on a great show for the sold out and standing room only crowd at the Hutchinson Power Pull Nationals. A fixture as of late on the Grand National Circuit, Tim Skelton, made an impressive pass as the 10th vehicle in the class and took the lead over from Mike O’Connor aboard the “Nasty Boys”. The “Nasty Boys” Dodge would come in at 310.500 feet but “The Bone” would creep a couple more feet and end up at 312.380 feet. After his run, he shared with the announcer, “You want to win the big Show. Last year we showed up here, I took third both nights. We have a lot of trucks left in the class, a lot of big iron to beat, but it feels good to be sitting where I am right now”. And that is what Tim had to do as he watched the Holman’s “4-Play” and Tyler Cobb’s “Bandit” come close late in the class as the 22nd and 23rd pullers. Tim was able to hold onto the lead and come out victorious over many strong competitors. The final class of the night would feature the Unlimited Modified Tractors. This was the first time that the Unlimited tractors had been to the Power Pull Nationals, although many of these vehicles have pulled at Hutchinson in the Modified Class. It took a little while for the sled to get set on this new track as well as a track that had received a large amount of rain the night before. Once the sled was dialed in, the Unlimiteds starting putting on a power show. Bob Jostock, on the “Wild Child”, would make an impressive pass of 326.595 feet. When asked about his run, he said he was, “happy with my run, better than last year when we knocked the front end off.” Adam Bauer, the second competitor in the class, also showed his horsepower and took the lead at 330.275 feet. Ricky Rose, aboard “Giddy Up” and the event promotor, would finish in third place just a third of a foot ahead of Brad Benedict’s “Non-Cent$”. Bret Berg and Chuck Knapp, having had problems with their vehicles before the sled was reset, were unable to come back and listed as hook and broke. With the amount of power and noise that the Unlimiteds bring to the Power Pull Nationals, expect to see them back next year, ready to compete and having the fans of the Power Pull Nationals, “Hear the Power, and Feel the Noise of the NTPA”.
