HISTORY OF PULLING It is said that around the 1860s when farming machines were pulled by horse, farmers would boast about the strength of their horses. They would claim that PAGE 6

HEAVY SUPER STOCK DIESEL TRACTORS You might call the Super Stock an unlimited version of the farm-appearing tractor classes. Although they may appear stock on the outside, they produce many times over their factoryrated horsepower. As the name implies, diesel is the only fuel allowed in the Super Stock Diesel division. These IH, Agco, and John Deere machines produce around 2,500 to 3,000 horsepower with their stock engine having up to four turbo chargers boosting the air mixture.
MODIFIED TRACTORS Modified Tractors can use virtually any number and type of engines and compete at a maximum weight of 7,500 pounds. You will see competitors in this division run 3 to 4 supercharged V-8s, 2 Allison aircraft engines, or 3 turbine engines. These engine combinations will produce between 6,000 to 8,000 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful motorsports in the world. You will actually feel the power when you watch them live!
PRO STOCK TRACTORS The “Pro Stock” division gets us a little closer to those tractors you see in the fields. This division by rule must maintain many of its “stock” components such as engine block, transmission housing, and final drive housing. Engine size is limited to 680 cubic inches, but injector pump is allowed and a single turbocharger can be of any size. These tractors compete at 10,000 lbs., the heaviest of the tractor classes.
MINI MODIFIED TRACTORS The “Minis” are the undisputed kings in the motorsport world when it comes to power-to-weight ratio. An amazing one horsepower per pound combined with a wheelbase of less than 100″ also qualifies the “Minis” as the “Wildest Ride on Four Wheels”, although they aren’t using all four most of the time. At 2,000 lbs., the Minis are the lightest division in NTPA competition and are probably the toughest to drive. Keeping the tractor in a straight line heading down the track is the biggest challenge a driver in this division faces.
Tractor Pulling is called the “Heaviest Motorsport on Earth” and the Super Semis are the heavyweights of the sport. Weighing in at 20,000 lbs., these behemoths overshadow everything else on the pulling track and for that matter, anything else in motorsports. When they come thundering down the track, the heavier the load gets, the harder they pull. Sometimes you wonder if they’ll ever stop. The Super Semis are one of the most popular divisions of NTPA pulling.

The “T” in NTPA stood only for “tractors” until the mid-1970s, but sled pulling comes just as naturally to pickups. Competing at 6,200 lbs., these vehicles must maintain their stock appearance and models range from vintage classic to showroom-new. But the factory look stops at the engine, which can have displacement up to 650 cubic inches. Most competitors in the Modified FWD subdivision use methanol, but others swear by racing gas, and all trucks are naturally aspirated. “Honey, I’m buying the kids flat karts for their birthdays.” It’s just what every kid wants to hear their dad say, but probably not what every mother wants to hear. At the time, Bodhy Monserud and Zakary Webster were ages 12 and 4 (respectively), and the two boys were about to embark on a journey that most boys only dream of. Dad (Scott Monserud) bought 2 karts from Scott Willis (Hoosier North) and the boys started out racing at Ramsey Raceway in Ramsey, MN. Zakary ran in the Rookie class at just 4 ½ years old and Bodhy ran in the Junior 1 class. “They did not set the world on fire,” jokes Willis. You won’t get an argument about that from Bodhy. “When we started out racing we had no idea what we were doing.” Luckily for them, Willis became a friend and a mentor to the boys, as well as to Scott. Even though things started a little rough, they got better quickly. “Like everyone else who is new to racing, they had their growing pains,” says Willis. “But we worked on things and the boys got better.” “He [Willis] showed us everything,” says Bodhy. “It is because of him that I learned so much and was able to start winning.” Lisa agrees 100%. “All of us really appreciate everything Scott has done for us.” Zakary’s first race might have been his last if he were the type to give up easily. “I was too short to see over the steering wheel,” recalls Zakary. “I turned and drove right into the pond.” Mom, Lisa Monserud, remembers too. “He slammed right into the pond. You could see the rooster tails going and he kept trying and trying, covered in mud!” But Zakary didn’t let it stop him and with some modifications to the car, he did much better. In fact, he moved up to the Sport Kid class after about a year and a half.

Bodhy may not have raced at all. “He has “This sport and this type of car is taking off scoliosis, it is hard for him to participate in like crazy,” says Lisa. “They are cheaper and many sports,” says Lisa. But racing posed no less maintenance than B mods or A mods and problem and he quickly moved up through hitting speeds of nearly 90 mph, they are often the classes. “It is really an awesome thing faster too.” that he can have a sport to focus on and to be able to race.” Last year, Bodhy raced in the Bodhy drives a Batwing Mini Mod, built by Animal class and finished 2nd in points. “He Nathan Kilwine. “They bought the car last was actually racing in that class with adults,” winter and assembled it themselves [with the help of Kurt and Dylan Kromschroeder],”says explains Lisa. Kilwine also organized the official Outlaw Mini Mod racing series in 2009. Within a year it was in full swing, traveling to four different tracks in the Southern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin area. Since then, the series has grown a considerable amount, adding more tracks, racing dates, drivers, and fans. “The Outlaw Mini Mod Series was designed to put racing back into the driver’s hands... Not the owner’s pocketbook. Well designed cars using smart technical rules makes this series competitive, fun, and a very affordable option for racing in Southern Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Western Wisconsin. A race ready, ‘turn key’ car only costs $8,499. The cars weigh around 900lbs. (with driver) and sport 120hp EFI Engines.” (Batwingchassis.com)
Batwing Outlaw mini mod racing. Bodhy says he has many great memories of flat kart racing, especially racing with good friends. “I was racing Junior 2 with my best racing friend Jake. We were pretty much the top guys in Junior 2 and we were always door-to-door down the straightaway, battling it out, having the time of our lives. Those really were some of the most fun times.” “Our motto is fast, affordable fun,” says Kilwine. “I think it’s a good stepping stone for these As much as he loved racing karts, Bodhy was younger drivers after karts and before moving ready to move to the next challenge. “With the bigger cars, and even flat cars, people have to spend thousands of dollars on their motors. You have to make them really big and really powerful, ” notes Bodhy. “All of us in mini mods have stock motors that are basically the same. It comes down to the set up and skill set that the driver has and that’s what I like about it.” Bodhy says it is an entirely different experience than driving a flat kart but he LOVES it. “You go through corners at way higher speeds and you are actually drifting the car in the turns,” he explains. “You’re basically going sideways.”

With such a big change comes a whole new learning curve. “We haven’t had the greatest year With most kids being age 8 or older, Lisa notes While mom and dad manage Team Monzter, the so far,” acknowledges Bodhy. There have been that at age 7, Zakary is one of the youngest Junior boys are busy with their cars and racing, even some pretty good crashes but with the help of 1 class racers. “We decided to move him up so helping each other at times. “I help Zak when Kilwine and other’s at the track, including the we could keep Bodhy’s motor,” she explains. I’m excited to see where we are headed in the future!” And just where might that be? Lisa says the future of Team Monzter will most likely see both boys in mini mods. She admits she is in no hurry for Zakary to make that move but when it happens, she knows it will be great for the boys. Zakary says he is also on board with the idea but not quite yet. because they are really expensive, but they are wicked fast so I think it would be fun to try out.” When not on the racetrack, the boys can be found rock crawling and four-wheeling or swimming in the pool. Bodhy has also found he has a talent for playing music. “He started out playing trumpet,” explains Lisa. “Then he changed to tenor sax and pretty much taught himself how to play it.” That is certainly not something you hear everyday! “I got one lesson from my friend,” says Bodhy. “And then I just started asking other people questions and figuring it out from there.” Next school year he will be playing in the top concert band and hopes to play in the top jazz band or maybe pit orchestra or pep band. It is apparent that on or off the track, Zakary and Bodhy have fully embraced the family’s unofficial motto, “Never give up.” //

ntelligent Design Corporation is a premier residential and commercial general contractor based in Minneapolis - Saint Paul Minnesota. Stan Bodnar began his career as a construction sub contactor in Minnesota in 2001. His knowledge of the industry and strong work ethic became evident early on as he ran several crews, specializing in windows, siding and roofs. He continued as a sub contractor for several years but all the while he wanted to grow his company and had dreams of bidding and finding his own work.

In 2007 he did just that. Intelligent Design Corp. was founded and Stan hit the ground running. From 2007 to 2010 Stan bid and worked his own jobs and began to grow and become very successful. Because of this success his wife Inna deiced to forego her dental career and joined the team as the Office Manager, making Intelligent Design Corp a family run business. Among her many duties Inna also handles the companies accounting responsibilities. This partnership between husband and wife has proven to be a great move judging by the growth and expansion IDC has seen in the last five years. Their company philosophy is as follows, “to maintain good relationships with our vendors, tradesman and employees. The goodwill we nurture with these folks is passed on to you. It means that our promise to you is that you can be sure that everyone who works on your home will respect your property and neighbors.” Judging by the testimonials on their website this philosophy seems to be working. One customer wrote, “The new siding is fabulous! Your crew did a spectacular job despite heat, humidity and storms.” Their craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail could not be matched.
THE AMERICAN DREAM Inna and Stan Bodnar were born and raised in Maldova, a country in Western Europe slightly bigger than the state of Maryland. Their families attended the same church and Inna and Stan were both involved in the youth group. When Stan was 17 years old his family immigrated to Minnesota. Inna’s family followed a couple of years later. The two families lived near each

other and once again were members of the same church. Inna and Stan became friends while working together at a local library. They also attended the same college where they were learning about American culture as well as the English language. Ultimately it was Stan’s generosity that won Inna’s heart. When Inna’s car broke down Stan offered to drive her to and from school. He also volunteered to help her fix up an old car that she had purchased. Soon after these events, Inna and Stan began dating and a year and a half later they were married. The rest is history as they say! The happy couple now has 4 children, 12 year old Victoria, 10 year old Roman, 9 year old Julia, and 5 year old Nikita. Their strong faith and family values carry over into their thriving business. After immigrating to the United States, Stan and Inna Bodnar learned the language and culture, and after years of hard work they now run a successful business. That truly is the American dream!
Intelligent Design Corp. has a reputation of doing the job the right way, from start to finish. They demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail and a customer first attitude that is not only recognized by customers but also their vendors. They are recognized as an Owens Corning Platinum Member, Mastic Elite Member and have certifications as a Lead Member/Asbestos. Intelligent Design Corp. also has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. //

CLASSICS PLUS LTD. The summer of 1988 is when Mike Freund gave the northland the opportunity to freeze its cars in time forever, and he’s been winning national titles for it ever since. Classics Plus, Ltd. located in N. Fon du Lac, Wisconsin holds a three tiered generation of skilled hands that disassemble, strip, rebuild and perfect classic cars. It all started in Mike’s six year old imagination after seeing American Graffiti, and came to life seven short years later when his dad bought a 1940 Chevy Coupe. The Freund Classics Plus, Ltd. family consists of owner Mike, his wife, his parents and his son. They come from a line of classic car lovers, most notably Mike’s dad who taught him the ropes of restoration when he purchased a 1955 Chevy two-door Bel Air to get the family around. The Chevy’s potential matched that of the Freund’s, and it became the first car Mike helped restore at only thirteen years old. Mike didn’t want to PAGE 42
stop at just restoring cars, though. He wanted to put his unique spin on these pieces and ensure that they lasted forever…and do it the right way, a character many car lovers spend years hunting for. Mike knew that the only way to do this was by opening his own shop. The first vintage wheels to roll into Classics Plus, Ltd., were that of a 1956 Chevy Bel Air two-door hardtop. All cars have their story, and this one went full circle, beginning in Mike’s family. His uncle had owned it years before and sold it to a friend who heard of the young entrepreneur’s gift of restoration. The Tri-Five Chevy’s soon became Mike’s favorite classic to restore. Growing up along with them, he learned them inside and out. He’s seen them on their last leg and put his own thoughts, details and custom paint jobs into turning them into award winning, unique, lasting pieces of art. Now Mike provides custom paint jobs, stainless

The next time you’re looking for an awardwinner and someone who can match the passion and eagerness for your classic that you have, you can bet that the hands at Classics Plus, Ltd. will turn your vision into a reality beyond your expectations. You give them the car, and they’ll give you the honesty, time, dedication, focus and product that you’ll be thrilled to drive. Oh, and if you happen to own a 1932 Ford fivewindow coupe like the one from American Graffiti, bring it in to Mike to restore and make his dream come true! //

THE TWIN CITIES
history cruze car show
STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by Tom Brewitz & WebWolf Design The Twin Cities History Cruze Car Show has turned 21. Families show up every Friday from June through mid September for the classic cars, food, music and fun. The North St Paul History Cruzers, are an open group of volunteers with one purpose, to bring families back in time and show young ones how us older folks lived. Being one of the best kept secrets of family friendly events where you can go and enjoy being with friends and the only costs you have is if you stop and have some great food. This sleepy little city comes alive for 16 consecutive Friday nights with about 1,500 1975 and earlier cars and trucks along with thousands of spectators. The Friday Night History Cruzers have been putting this show on for 21 years. Meet up with friends and family and enjoy this rolling museum of Detroit and imported iron. We have everything from stock and unrestored cars and trucks to beautiful custom classics, listen to live ‘50’s and ‘60s bands and all the State Fair Foods you can eat.
It is great to see multi generation groups all walking through the show, all enjoying what they see and hear rolling by is such a great feeling. A young family can put their young ones in wagons or strollers, grab the leash and the dog and stroll the show, from 6 PM – 10 PM and unless you by food from one of the many vendors or purchase something from a business or vendor, it will not cost the family anything. Unless we bring the young generations into the “MotorHead” world, these works of art will not be here for anyone to enjoy. We really enjoy seeing senior citizens walking through the show, stopping by a ’64 Pontiac Station wagon and hearing them say they remember owning one of them. Watching their eyes sparkle remembering their past cars. Seeing a 1941 Ford parked next to a 1969 Road Runner and seeing a 1929 Model T parked across the street is something that just does not happen unless you are here in North St Paul. Something many people don’t think about is that there will never be another jeepster or DelRay built again. If we want to have the next generation see any of these cars, we need to spark interest in the youth of today.

The History Cruzers are a non‐profit group of volunteers, no one in the past 21 years have ever been paid for work performed. The board meets with the City of North St Paul, schedules all meetings and shows for the year, promotes the show, designs flyers, builds web sites all on their own time and money. The show is funded by the business owners, sponsors and the vendors on the street. The Car Show is not funded by the City, we pay the city for use of it’s streets, it is the non‐profit that pays for the barricades, insurance, toilets, trash pickup and police protection. If you want to let your mind wander back to a time when things were simple and really enjoy a Family Friendly event that you will not soon forget, go to www.historycruzer.com , like us on facebook, or better yet, grab your family, come to downtown North St Paul, Minnesota. We guarantee you will love it or double your entrance fee back, oh ya, it is free… //

WOODIES RACING SIGNS TO COMPETE IN ISOC PRO LITE
Alpine, Wyo. - Woodies Racing is pleased to announce that we have signed Michael George of Pine Plains, New York to compete full-time in the Pro Lite class on the ISOC national snocross tour. Mike is a veteran of the East Coast Snocross series having raced several years in their Pro division and is a great fit with our growing program as we transition into one of Arctic Cat’s snocross superteams. “I am really excited for this opportunity,” said George. I’ve been part of some regional teams in the past but have pretty much had to do this as a small family operation and can’t wait JULY 2015
to get started with Woodies Racing and the support they have from the Arctic Cat factory.” Woodies Racing completed our first full season on the ISOC tour in 2014-15 with Kaden and Taven Woodie competing in the Junior classes. The experience was everything we hoped it would be and this year Kaden will be 100% focused on the Sport class while Taven will be racing in the new Junior Girls 9-13 class which the team will also be sponsoring. In addition, Wes Selby will be joining the team at a select number of national snocross events to compete in the Pro-Am +30 class. Wes was
part of the team last season competing at the Ultimate Snowmobiler competition in Crested Butte, Colorado where he swept the entire event, earning a ticket to the 2016 Winter X Games in Hillcross. As part of our committment to snocross, we have recently opened branch locations for our business, Woodies Towing & Transport, in Thief River Falls and Milaca, Minnesota. We will be spending our winters in Milaca at a new facility we have recently acquired to serve as a team headquarters. //

VINTAGE OFF-ROAD MOTORCYCLES TAKE OVER THE MINNESOTA FAIRGROUNDS WRITTEN by Sean O’Nei
A motorcycle swap meet, crossed with a ride-in campout, crossed with a museum quality display, crossed with a community education class. The Viking Chapter, Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s National Meet, is a lot of things all mixed together. Whether you want to show off your most recently restored vintage bike, pick up parts for your next project, or pick up tips from restoration experts during a “tech talk”, once a year the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St Paul hosts the largest gathering of vintage motorcycles in the state. It’s two shows put together as the Viking AMCA combines their National Meet with the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club’s show. That means that you’ll see bikes from all over the world and across the 20th century. To keep the theme of the display fresh, the club picks a type of motorcycle each year to highlight in their display. This year’s focus was off-road bikes. The Japanese off-road bikes came out of the woodwork, with one of the longest lines of Honda Scramblers you’ve ever seen. The Vintage Trials Riders brought examples of every major manufacturer. There even was a beautifully restored 1968 Rokon. Have you ever seen one of those beasts? It’s one of the only dual-wheel drive motorcycles in the world, with chain final drive for each massive wheel. It can barely make it to 20 mph, but you can climb a tree with it! Although many of the bikes were impeccable restorations, most were daily riders - still bearing the scars of off-road use and only a quick wipe down to make them presentable. A few of the machines on display stretched all the way back in history to the point when ALL motorcycles were off-road motorcycles - back when the road system in America consisted of little more than dirt wagon paths. For example, the 1914 Harley-Davidson model 10B brought by Bob Sopkowiak saw much of its early life in rural Minnesota. Bob knows the bikes history, because it was his dad that bought the ‘14 brand new. Bob says that his dad rode it constantly

And we were still racing.” Fast forward to 2013. While some people deny their passion and take the safe, secure route, that wasn’t an option for Smith and Allen. They saw an opportunity and jumped on it. “Cycle Works in Elk River became available and we decided to put our love of motorsports to work,” says Smith. “We took over the business, got their customer list, the dealership, the equipment…moved it all up to Zimmerman and opened “Those Dyno Guys”.” Today, at 35, Smith and Allen may be a couple of fairly young guys but there is no denying their passion for high performance and perfection in all areas. It is the driving force behind their business. PAGE 54
Along with passion, both men have racing backgrounds that have provided them with hands-on experience and a wealth of knowledge. Allen’s background lies heavily in quads. “I grew up watching my cousin race ATV’s and three-wheelers,” says Allen. “I have loved it since I was about 4 years old.” Smith adds that Allen also races ATV’s himself. “He has won a lot of state championships and had several top ten finished at nationals.”

You can’t call yourselves “Those Dyno Guys” without being experts in dyno tuning. For tuning, they are equipped with latest tuning software from multiple manufacturers, including Dynojet Power Commander, Dynojet Power Vision, TTS MasterTune, Harley-Davidson’s Screamin’ Eagle Pro Super Tuner and S&S VFI.

Those Dyno Guys also includes two “dynomite” girls. Allen’s sister, Kristen, is the receptionist/bookkeeper and Smith’s wife, Jodi, is the office manager. So for now, things are pretty much “all in the family” but Allen has visions for future growth. “It would be great to move into a bigger facility and have a couple of employees,” he says. “Maybe sponsor a couple more riders and really get our name out there.” On the down low, there is a new deal brewing that could help that expansion come sooner rather than later. Smith isn’t saying much but he did tell WoT that they have been talking with an OEM aftermarket manufacturer about an exclusive partnership for dyno tuning and testing of their products. We will just have to stay “tuned” to find out! //

Stock title. In professional drag racing elapsed time and speed records frequently don’t last for an entire season. In some cases, they don’t hold up for a single race. Like the nitro fueled cars, Pro Stock cars are limited to a 500 cubic inch power plant using racing gasoline that is fed to two four barrel carburetors. A five speed transmission helps these cars cover the track. For the two wheel set, the current marks are an elapsed time of 6.72 seconds with Andrew Hines along for the ride. The fastest run was the 199.88 miles an hour pass by Hector Arana, Jr. With 45 wins and 6 NHRA championships Dave Shultz tops both lists in Pro Stock Motorcycle history. Andrew Hines is next on the championships list with 4. His brother Matt and Angelle Sampay have each earned 3 titles. For the pro classes the 200 miles an hour mark in Pro Stock Motorcycle is one of the last barriers. The bikes are the only professional class that does not use a parachute to help bring the run to a stop. From a few minutes of exposure a year on television in the early days of the sport all 24 races are now given extensive coverage on the ESPN network. The memorabilia associated with drag racing is also growing in variety and popularity. However, if you are interested in drag racing collectables you may want to get them the next time you’re at a race. They’re going FAST. //
