WOT // How are you involved in motorsports? CHRIS \\ Growing up we had a lot of land, so my brother and I built a motocross track in the backyard. We would have all our friends over riding dirt bikes, three wheelers and four wheelers. I started racing dirt track cars in the early nineties and love the thrill of competition. I hung up the helmet in 2009 when my son started racing quarter midgets. That’s how I met Dustin, since his son races quarter midgets as well. Now both of our families are at a track somewhere almost every weekend of the year, either racing ourselves or watching a race. WOT // Do you have parts for vehicles other
than snowmobiles? What kinds?
CHRIS \\ Since we took over HPE, one of our primary objectives has been to expand into other forms of motorsports. We are slowly adding more and more parts geared towards ATVs, motorcycles, quarter midgets, micro sprints and more. As we grow into these other markets we are expanding our Racer Support program to include all forms of motorsports. With our Lucas Oil products, there is such a variety – so we have even been able to reach out customers in the heavy equipment and trucking industries as well.

WOT // What made you want to start Hi-performance Engineering?
CHRIS \\ We were interested in being a part of the powersports industry, and then we found this great opportunity to run an aftermarket parts distribution warehouse – it was a good fit for us! WOT // How did your business start and how has it evolved?
CHRIS \\ Hi-performance Engineering was started in 1981 by a couple guys in Thief River Falls, MN. Glen Follet and Larry Coltom were legends within Arctic Cat and the snowmobile racing community. They were known for their expertise in clutching and pipes, and HPE quickly gained a great reputation for quality parts and excellent customer service. As the business evolved, inventory expanded from Arctic Cat and Polaris OEM parts, to include aftermarket parts and accessories for all sled brands – from vintage to new – along with their signature performance products. Over time, ATV parts and accessories were added as well. The business was moved to Mendota Heights, MN in 2013. This moved allowed for faster shipping times and allows for more people to stop in

and pick up their parts. Now through our ownership, we have added more shop tools, great chassis accessories for ATVs/UTVs, tires, and more lines of lubricants & cleaners. WOT // How did you become the leading supplier of snowmobile parts and accessories? CHRIS \\ Through pure hard work and passion for the sport, we strive to carry on the legacy of Hi-performance Engineering. We work with over 100 of the best manufacturing companies in the industry and strive to have the parts on the shelf when you need them. We are strategically located where we can supply parts in one business day within 7 Midwest states, and within 3 days for the greater US with standard ground shipping. We pride ourselves on our ability to bring competitive prices to all our dealers across the country.
Dustin also grew up riding sleds and dirt bikes, and has run his own business for years (construction). The rest of our employees have years of experience in the industry (some used to work for Marshall Distributing), participation in racing (quarter midgets), and a passion for snowmobiling. Combined, they bring a variety of skills to HPE – to provide our customers with excellent service and attention. WOT // What is your role at HPE?
CHRIS \\ Since Dustin and I are co-owners, we each focus on our individual strengths to provide what is best for HPE. I am the one who is usually pouring over spreadsheets and calculations, talking to sales reps, and working on the front end of the business. Dustin WOT // Is HPE a family owned business? If so, is more of the background guy, overseeing what parts do they play? the warehouse, inventory management, and CHRIS \\ Yes, we are two families that partnered facilitating the logistics of our products. together to make HPE the best it can be. We have 5 additional employees that are now a part of our HPE family – we work together, play together and race together.
WOT // What are your employee’s backgrounds in the field?
CHRIS \\ My family had a heavy equipment business, and as a kid growing up I spent a lot of time working in the parts and service departments. I always enjoyed working the parts counter, helping customers get their equipment up and running.

WOT // Do you manufacture your own parts? If not, who does and is it local?
CHRIS \\ We do not manufacture any parts our-
selves. We have chosen to align ourselves with the finest manufactures in the industry, mostly based here in the upper Midwest. We try to look for other new and unique products that you just can’t find everywhere. There are a lot of people out there with some great product ideas and we want to help them get their products to the market.
WOT // What are the benefits of customers obtaining parts from you versus the competition?
CHRIS \\ Our typical customer is a small independent dealer and/or service shop. We do not have the high purchase requirements for dealers that many of our competitors do. We also offer volume discount programs that are very aggressive to help increase the bottom lines of our dealers. We recognize that if our dealers are not profitable, we will not be either. Your local family service shop really depends on the people in their local community to survive and I want to encourage everyone to support these local small businesses. This is the back bone of our economy and it is getting more and more difficult for these small businesses to survive these days. WOT // Can you ship parts internationally? CHRIS \\ Yes. We ship parts daily to Canada and have a strong customer base in Northern Europe/ Scandinavia. We even have a few loyal customers in Japan. WOT // How do you make sure your prices and parts stay competitive? CHRIS \\ Some items have a regulated minimum price, due to M.A.P. policies set by the manufacturers. But for all of our products, we watch the competition as much as possible to ensure that we are providing the best deals for our customers.
WOT // Do you have a price match guarantee? CHRIS \\ Yes – our goal is always to get you your parts fast and at a fair price. With our Price Match Program, you are sure to get the product you need at the best price available. If you find the exact same product elsewhere for less, just let us know – and we will match their price (*some restrictions apply – please see our website for details) PAGE 6

JASON LINE WINS RACE #12 FOR T Written By </Nicole Erickson, Aries Media LLC>
Norwalk, Ohio (June 26, 2016) – Team Summit Racing claimed
win number 12 when Jason Line won the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. It was the sixth all-Summit final with Line facing off against teammate Greg Anderson at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. Line and Anderson also secured spots in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. The last time a driver clinched a spot this early in the season was Tony Schumacher in 2008. “To win a Summit Racing event, in a Summit Racing car, at Summit Racing’s home track is a huge deal,” Line said. “Greg and I have been very fortunate to be able to make that happen a lot throughout our racing careers.”
JASON LINE Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS Line qualified second with a 6.569 second 211.00 MPH pass. He defeated Curt Steinbach in Round One of eliminations (6.634/209.23 to 6.748/204.66); Erica Enders-Stevens in Round Two (6.662/209.04 to 6.737/205.57); and Vincent Nobile in the semi-finals (6.675/208.62 to 6.762/207.69).
In the final against Greg Anderson, Line had .013 second starting line advantage and never looked back, taking the win with a 6.678/208.42 to Anderson’s 6.717/208.36. Line admitted that he isn’t tired of racing his teammate in the finals this season. “Greg’s the person I want to race the most in the final, but he’s also the person I want to race the least,” Line explained. “He’s got killer instinct and he’s a great driver. Right now our cars are so good that it certainly wasn’t an easy day.” This is Line’s seventh win of 2016. He remains Number One in the Pro Stock points standings.
GREG ANDERSON Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS
Anderson qualified Number One with a 6.565/211.26 pass. He defeated Charlie Westcott Jr. in Round One of eliminations (6.636/209.33 to 6.849/202.36) and Alex Laughlin in Round Two (6.652/208.23 to 6.698/207.88). There were tense moments in the semifinals against Shane Gray when Anderson’s car had mechanical issues and would not start. Anderson got the Summit Racing Camaro started and ended up taking the win against Gray, 6.675/208.04 to 6.699/206.86. “In Pro Stock you have to start the motor on your own. Unfortunately the starter ripped a couple teeth out of the flywheel. It was stuck in that position and wouldn’t turn the motor over,” explained Anderson. “So I put the car in gear and the boys pushed it and I was able to get the motor to turn a little bit and get the flywheel in a spot where it had a couple good teeth. It started turning and I got her lit. We were able to make the run and squeak out a win by a thousandth of a second to make our final round.” “In the final I spun the tires on the starting line and got a little too aggressive,” Anderson continued. “When you’re racing your teammate it’s like ‘let’s stop being conservative, it’s time to get after it.’ And I went too far.” Anderson is currently second in the Pro Stock points standings. It was a very close race, but Johnson took the win with a 3.984/317.72 to Wilkerson’s 3.991/322.34. The margin of victory was just half a car length. “We had some new car blues – or should we say rebuilt car blues,” Wilkerson said. “The first couple runs all the systems didn’t work correctly, but we ended up figuring out what we did wrong. The car threw us some good bones on Saturday, and Sunday it made a damn nice run. We got beat by the better car. We had a good race, just the wrong end of it.” Tim is currently seventh in the Funny Car Championship points standings.

"Grudge at da GrovE" New Grudge Racing Series at Grove Creek Raceway (grovecreek.com) near Litchfield, MN takes the MN Drag Racing scene by storm with increasing popularity.
Coverage & Photographs by Aaron Van Heel - AtoBgear.com - crazyspeed.com Saturday night, June 11th it was put up or shut up time as Grove Creek Raceway hosted the Innovative Metalworks No Time (N/T) No Prep Grudge Race. Rick Austin at Grove Creek wanted to give this type of an event a try and was thrilled with the results. Watching FAST door slammers work their way down an un-prepped 1/8 mile track with the timing clocks off and nothing but the win lights on is about as close as you will get to illegal street racing without the risk of going to Jail. As two of the small tire cars worked their way down the 660 feet that is Grove Creek Raceway, peddling the cars in and out of the throttle, track owner Rick Austin exclaimed, “this is REAL Drag Racing, I love this stuff!” The Innovative Metals N/T Grudge race held two classes, Big Tire and Small Tire. Big tire cars are considered anything with a tire larger than 10.5” in width. Big Tire cars are typically back-halfed style cars with a 4-link or ladder bar rear suspension like the cars that made the 80s and 90s Pro Street movement popular. Small tire cars have stock suspension and DOT tires or slicks 10.5 inches or smaller.
The Players: Big Tire featured a handful of some of the faster street cars from Minnesota that were willing to come out and play, including racers traveling as far as Grudge Racer Justin Higgins from Bemidji, MN with his Big Block Nitrous “BRUISED EGO” Chevy II.
Dan Bergstrom took the win and the cash home with his “Knight Rider” Firebird in the big tire class after Higgins experienced a giant nitrous backfire at the starting line handing the win to Bergstrom, who made a fast, clean pass for the fans in the stands. Prior rounds included Steve Carson’s nitrous big block Nova and Jay Harper’s Twin Turbo S-10 pick-up. Small Tire cars included Chad Hoffman from Innovative Metalworks own Mopar powered nitrous assisted Dodge who went on to take the win and the cash in the Small Tire class after rounds of competition. Craig Groebner runnered up in Small Tire in his Big Block Nitrous powered Yellow Nova. Also on the property were Shane Novak’s Turbocharged 96 Mustang from Novak Construction, doing half-track “Beautiful Smokey Burnouts” and a number of other Twin Cities small tire players. The final round for the Big Tire vs. Small Tire SHOOTOUT was not meant to be. With $700 additional bonus bucks from the sponsors on the line for the winner of Big Tire vs. Small Tire, Dan Bergstrom readied his Big Tire Nitrous assisted Firebird for competition, while Chad Hoffman assessed his own situation after his final round win in Small Tire which included no oil pressure his own nitrous powered Mopar. Continue page 18
In the end Dan Bergstrom took home the Cash and the Title of the “King of Grudge,” until the next event at least. CA$H sponsors for the Big Tire vs. Small Tire Shootout included Novak Construction, Innovative Metalworks, The Cabin Bar, the E-Cig Café, and Creative Concrete Specialists. With the No Prep N/T Grudge racing scene that is ultra-popular down south and around the Chicago area, and now with the popularity of Reality TV shows like Street Outlaws on the Discovery Channel, it is only fitting that this type of drag racing is contested right here in Minnesota at Grove Creek Raceway near Litchfield on Hwy 12 (grovecreek. com). Special thanks to track owner, Rick Austin and sponsor Chad Hoffman of Innovative Metalworks for giving Minnesota Drag Racers a place to see who is the best of the best. The next race will be held July 16th and August 27th at Grove Creek Raceway and is poised to be even bigger and more exciting for the fans and the racers. The online talk about who is the BADDEST of the BAD when it comes to Minnesota Street cars has increased steadily since the first MN Grudge Race of 2016 was held, and the Big Tire vs. Small Tire Shootout will be the judge and jury on that matter. Time to put up or shut up at Grove Creek July 16th! We hope to see all of the FANS, and ALL of the fastest Street and Grudge Racers on July 16th, you do not want to miss the action. – A t o B g e a r. c o m …. G e t S o m e !

A WEEKEND OF UPS AND DOWNS FOR WILKERSON WITH REBUILT CAR IN NORWALK Norwalk, Ohio (June 26, 2016) – After three weeks of racing a borrowed car, Tim Wilkerson brought back his 2016 Murf McKinney Nitro Funny Car for the NHRA Summit Racing Nationals. Wilkerson qualified No. 9 with a 3.968 E.T. at 323.74 mph in the Ford Mustang Shelby Mustang. In round one Wilkerson was matched up against No. 8 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. It was a very close race with Wilkerson running 3.991/322.34 but Johnson made it to the finish line first with a 3.984/317.72. The difference was about half a car length. “We had some new car blues – or should we say rebuilt car blues. The first couple runs the systems didn’t work correctly and it took me in between rounds to figure out what went wrong,” Wilkerson said. “The car threw us some good bones on Saturday and Sunday made a damn nice run, we just got thru the clutch a little bit earlier and ended up getting beat. We got beat by the better car. We had a good race, just the wrong end of it.” Wilkerson remains in the top ten of the NHRA Mello Yello Championship Point Standing, grabbing the No. 7 position after 12 of 24 races in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. The next race for Wilkerson is the NHRA Route 66 Nationals in Chicago July 10 - 12, which is the home race for the Springfield, Illinois native. While the race is two weeks away, Wilkerson and his crew won’t have any time off. “I don’t think we’re going to have much of a break. We have another new body that’s done and we’re going to get it painted,” said Wilkerson. “We have a lot to do before heading to the Route 66 Nationals.” And for those wondering about Wilkerson’s old car “Bessie,” she will be back in Chicago with her new owner Brian Stewart behind the wheel. CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF FUNNY CAR RACING
1966 - 2016 Written By < / Tom Edwards > Photographs By < / Tom Edwards >
My first visit to Connecticut Dragway was before the debut of Funny Car racing so I have been a fan of the fuel coupes since their inaugural season. As it turned out, I believe that proved to be perfect timing. It gave me the opportunity to see the earliest versions of the Ramchargers Dodge Dart, the Tasca Ford Mystery 9, 8 and 7 (an elapsed time reference) Mustangs driven by Bill Lawton and tuned by John Healey, the Farkonas, Coil and Minick Chi-Town Hustler, Bill Flynn’s Yankee Peddler, Lou Arrington’s Brutus GTO, Malcolm Durham’s Strip Blazer Corvair and Fast Eddie Shartman and Dyno Don Nicholson’s Mercury Comets. A new chapter in drag racing history was being written and fans of the sport in the mid 60’s were in for a ride that has reached the half century mark. Time really does fly when you’re having fun. Of the early teams I followed so many seasons ago, the Ramchargers and Tasca Ford Racing always managed to keep my attention. While walking through the pits I saw Suivez Moi in gold lettering near the driver’s side tail light on the burgundy Tasca Mustang. Having the French term Follow Me on the back of the car struck me as appropriate. A lot of Funny Cars that raced a Tasca Ford Funny Car had a nice view of the back of the car shortly after the light went green on the Christmas Tree. At the 1966 A.H.R.A. Winternationals Bill Lawton drove past fellow Ford racer Gas Ronda’s Mustang with a 9.78 second run at 140.00 miles an hour to turn on the win light. In August of that season the Red Mystery 9 Mustang edged Phil “Daddy Warbuck’s Bonner’s 427 Single Overhead Cam powered Falcon at the Factory Showdown in Maryland. The Tasca team could have broken out some paint and brushes to change the 9 on the rear quarter panels to an 8 when they raced Charlie Allen’s Dart in the summer of 1966 at Connecticut Dragway. The great looking Mystery 7 Mustang made its initial runs at the 1967 N.H.R.A. Springnationals in Bristol, Tennessee.
Supercharged and on nitro it ran a best of 199.97 miles an hour. I am occasionally reminded of that number when I see normally aspirated Pro Stock cars now running over 200 MPH with Pro Stock Motorcycles set to break that barrier, possibly this season. I collect drag racing memorabilia so adding the John Force Racing Tasca Ford car to my collection was fun. The Tasca Ford motto, “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” still applies. Bob Tasca III will be taking his Mustang fuel coupe down the track at a number of N.H.R.A. races this year. Having followed the team for years I had to pick up a History of the Mystery shirt at a Las Vegas race. It features a variety of the Mystery cars over the years. “The Tasca Ford Legacy” by Bob McClurg is a great photo f illed book about the team. The Ramchargers were a group of Chrysler engineers that shared an interest in drag racing. The day I saw them in New England they had a Top Fuel dragster and matching Dart Funny Car; very cool. Their rigs left a lasting impression on this then-young racing fan. I found their 1967 Dart an interesting race car. Like all floppers of that era it featured a tubular chassis but the body was not fiberglass. Engineers that they were, the Ramchargers went with an acid dipped body that had a fiberglass removable roof. I still remember seeing my first “convertible” Funny Car. Eliminating the weight of the roof would appear to an advantage in a drag race but I believe the roof would have provided a lot of much needed downforce.
For the 1990’s Funny Car racing can pretty well be summed up in one name: John Force. He won 9 titles with Cruz Pedregon winning in 1992. When John hired Cruz’s brother Tony to drive a second Funny Car for John Force Racing, John said “I’ve hired my own assassin”. Close. In 2003 Tony won the championship. Given Roland Leong’s nickname and the name on the side of a lot of his cars was “The Hawaiian” I thought it made sense for soft drink company Hawaiian Punch to sponsor Roland’s car. I remember seeing the Hawaiian with Jim White driving race Force The ’67 was the Ramchargers first entry into the world of Funny Car racing. They had Jim Thorton at the wheel when the car went into the 9, 8 and 7 second elapsed time zones. For those that enjoy the history of that professional category: “We Were the Ramchargers – Inside Drag Racing’s Legendary Team” by Dave Rockwell would be a nice addition to a racing library. In the 1970’s if you raced a Funny Cr for a living it was very handy if your name was Don Prudhomme.
He earned Funny Car championships in 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978. He did it in some very cool looking race cars. Nothing wrong with stylin’ when you’re winnin’. The decade closed with Raymond Beadle of Blue Max fame winning the title. Raymond open the 1980’s with consecutive championships. The decade saw 5 drivers earn championships with Kenny Bernstein’s 4 leading the way. One of his Buick floppers earned the nickname the Batmobile for its radical, but within the rules, design. Rule changes made during the off season made it a one year car. The f irst time I saw it Kenny was doing a burnout and the car just looked very different from everything else on the property.
at Pomona. Hot Wheels was among the first nonautomotive product companies to provide large scale sponsorships to Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwan and their red and yellow Funny Cars helped boost the sales of the popular collectable small scale cars. As much as I enjoyed the cars the Snake and the Mongoose drove, it was nice to see Bruce Sarver in a black Hot Wheels backed Pontiac Firebird flopper at Pomona. As aerodynamic as they are it has surprised me for years that you don’t see Corvette Funny Cars. The only one I have seen since the Shark was on race tracks in the 60’s was the Easy Care car driven by Jim Epler the first Funny Car pilot with a 300 MPH time slip. The 90’s were a great decade for Funny Car racing fans and the dawn of the 21st century brought about some amazing levels of performance. From 2000 to 2010 John Force won the first 3 titles with John Force Racing driver Tony Pedregon earning the top spot in 2003. The following season Force was back to placing the number 1 on the side of his race car.
He finished the decade with 6 championships. Going into the 2016 season he has 16 championships as a driver. No surprise here, he has more wins than any other driver in N.H.R.A. history, by a bunch. Like a lot of fans about my age, seeing the first half century of Funny Car racing has been a blast. I’m curious to see how the class evolves the upcoming years. My guess is we will see speeds and elapsed times the early pioneers of the class couldn’t have imagined. That sounds (very loudly) like a lot of fun. //
