“HE RACED A MODEL ‘A’ FORD WITH A SUPERCHARGED SMALL BLOCK CHEVY ENGINE.”

WHO IS JACK WHEELER? Jack was born Two years later in 1962, the railroad Together they ventured into building in 1929 and served in the Army during the Korean War. In 1952, Jack found himself working for the railroad as a fireman. This was the task to shovel coal into a train engine’s firebox on a steam engine locomotive. As Jack grew up he always seemed to be drawn to hotrods. Jack raced locally at Minnesota Dragways in Anoka MN. He raced a model ‘A’ Ford with a supercharged small block Chevy engine. He built his own engines and did all the machine work that he could himself. Around 1960, Jack purchased a boring bar, used to bore cylinder blocks, from a shop in Minnesota named “Jake’s Motor Service”. He was still working at the railroad at night, and building engines in his basement.

Back in 1989 a friend talked 19-year old Jeff Hayford into giving cross country snowmobile racing a try near their homes in Walker in north central Minnesota. “I rode my snowmobile 10 miles to the race, entered, and won my class!”, Jeff recalls. “Of course I was hooked from there.” Hayford ran the various snowmobile racing circuits in that territory with much success up until 2002 when all his energies were focused on his purchase of a struggling Ford dealership. That was followed by the procurement of another dealership in 2010, and then more years when Jeff was simply too busy to be racing. Then in 2014 he heard that the famous I-500 Cross Country event was being revived. “Back in the ‘90s I never had the funds or the time to run what was then our biggest race and I always regretted that,” he says. “So now with my dealerships up and running well [Hayford Ford and Rapids Ford] I felt it was time for a return to the racing scene. I ran some smaller races as a warm-up, felt good, and finally got to race the I500. With my son now interested in the sport I decided to jump back in and this season we went allout with a 6-rider team including myself.”

Willmar, Minnesota. Courses range from Le Mans-style venues on ice-covered lakes, to traditional ditch, river and field cross country tracks. Unlike Snocross and Oval snowmobile races which are relatively short races, Cross Country races are quite long with the Pros typically running 125 miles each day during the two-day events.

differently for the ice races than we would for the ditch, field, and river tracks.” Cross Country racing has changed quite a bit since Jeff’s early days in the ‘90s. “The sleds are quite a bit faster now and it’s not unusual to hit 100 mph in many sections during an event. It gets pretty wild if you happen to come up on something unexpectedly at those speeds. Things really get bad when visibility is tough, too.”

Endurance events such a cross country require a different strategy for winning. “I always tell my guys to win, first you have to finish,” says Jeff. “The primary keys to success in this sport is to have a fast, As for their rookie season as a big team, reliable sled, a fast rider who rides fast Hayford is quite happy with the results enough to keep mistakes and breakdowns thus far. “Most of our riders are right up to a minimum.” He adds, “In this sport there in the points championships at this there is also quite a bit of wrenching point and we all feel pretty good about involved in that we set up the sleds quite the season.”

The Hayford team races the United States Cross Country Snowmobile Race Circuit (USXC) which is the largest cross country racing circuit in North America. It consists of 6-8 events, including the legendary I-500 race which is a four-day event racing from Winnipeg, Canada, to

With over 93 years of combined racing on the Fort Fremont team, owner Jeff Thomson has carried on his dad’s tradition of bringing world class Snocross racers to the podium of championships since 1969. Based in the frequently snow stuffed village of Fremont, Wisconsin, Jeff and his eight racers, including a few siblings, have been on sleds since early childhood and bring that experience and talent to the podium so often that they earned the title “2014 Team of the Year.” The Fort Fremont team let me in on some secrets to their success including strategy, pre-race rituals, and advice from one of the greatest coaches in the sport.

WOT // How long have you had a career in racing? THOMSON \\ Over 40 years. WOT // Do you still race? THOMSON \\ Not in the last two years due to injuries. I still always want to, but it’s probably better to serve the team by helping with management among other things. I still ride the practice track in Snocross and Motocross – it’s SO much FUN! WOT // What’s your biggest personal success in the sport? THOMSON \\ The friendships! WOT // What made you decide to form a team? THOMSON \\ I always liked and was involved in team sports like racing, water skiing, and show skiing. With the current Snocross team, I basically said a prayer – Okay, Lord, I have a lot of knowledge and equipment in racing. If You want me to continue doing this, help put something together. It’s been an amazing ride ever since! WOT // When was fort Fremont Racing founded, and by whom? THOMSON \\ 1969 by my Dad WOT // What qualifications did your racers have to meet?

WOT // How were you introduced to racing?

THOMSON \\ Helping and spending time with each person – they’re all important!

NOAH PFEIL \\ My entire life has revolved around snowmobiles. At age 13, my dad and I went to the ISOC National in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and decided (after much begging by me) to give racing a try the next season.

WOT // What do you offer your team that brings success?

CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ My dad raced Cross Country, so I started on the 120.

THOMSON \\ Praying and asking God for help. I’m amazed at what happens when I ask.

BRANDON VLACH \\ Ross Martin got me into racing.

WOT // What’s the most challenging part of coaching?

WOT // What accomplishments are you most proud of this season? THOMSON \\ All eight racers stay healthy and have fun racing! The GNSS Regional Opener had excellent results. The ISOC National performances were great. Many racers at the Plymouth GNSS race had 1st place in finals. First place at the Eagle River World Championships! WOT // What makes you confident in your team? THOMSON \\ My confidence is in Jesus. I used to try to do it with all of my own plans and lists…I had fair results, but since I really started to believe who Jesus is and follow His ways, it’s been far better! “I Am Second!” WOT // How do your teammates complement each other?

THOMSON \\ They had to be willing to work together and encourage each other. We strive to better ourselves and focus on integrity, performance, and hospitality.

THOMSON \\ Not enough time could explain it, but we could really produce a reality show – “Life of Snocross Racing,” and no drama would need to be added! Did I mention we have to fantastic Pro Women racers on our team?!

WOT // What are your goals for your racers each season?

WOT // What are your goals for the upcoming season?

THOMSON \\ To keep working, encouraging, and growing together!

THOMSON \\ To keep working, encouraging, and growing each other!

WOT // What are your greatest aspirations for your racers?

WOT // What’s unique about the Fort Fremont Racing team?

MAR 2016

THOMSON \\ Each one of us brings something unique to this team. We are a group of passionate privateer racers that have joined together.

PETE SCHOETZ \\ My friend, Todd Achterberg. JAKKI FARMER \\ Watching my cousin race in the ISOC National series. COLE PARKER \\ A friend who recently stopped racing introduced me to Snocross.

WOT // What made you decide to compete? NOAH PFEIL \\ I have always been competitive on snowmobiles. I wanted to actually see how I would do against other people. I’ve always loved the sport and wanted to try the competition! CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Just being around my dad racing. BRANDON VLACH \\ I have wanted to race since I was a little kid, and when my dad met Ross, he convinced my dad into letting me race! PETE SCHOETZ \\ The thrill of racing. JAKKI FARMER \\ My parents bought a 440 IQ for my younger brother, but he wasn’t old enough to race it, and some people at the race said I should try it out in the Novice Class. I got 2nd place and really loved it. I only raced two times that year, but that was the start of my Snocross career. MARKKI FARMER \\ My brother Zak and my sister Jakki were racing, and I had to go to all of the races with my family anyhow…so I told my parents that if I have to go to all

the races I might as well race, too! I started my racing career three years ago with GNSS and this is my first year racing Nationals. ZAK FARMER \\ My cousin, Mike Bauer #717, was racing. We would go to his races to watch him. My dad found me a Ski-Doo 300 for me to race when I was seven. COLE PARKER \\ Mainly the need to compete again after deciding to not wrestle in college. I saw a local race sled for sale and decided to give it a try.

WOT // How long have you been racing for? NOAH PFEIL \\ This year will be my third year racing. My dad had me on a snowmobile when I was two years old, but 2013 was the first year of actual racing.

COLE PARKER \\ Winning my first National Heat in Lake Geneva.

WOT // Why did you choose your class? NOAH PFEIL \\ I chose Junior 16-17 for points to qualify for the Showdown at Sundown and at Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I also chose Sport Lite to push myself as a rider and hopefully further my riding skills while racing against tougher competitors. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ I thought it was the right class level for the competition. BRANDON VLACH \\ I moved up from the 16-17 Class. PETE SCHOETZ \\ Plus 40 chose me because of my age!

CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Since I was five – JAKKI FARMER \\ When I first started racing, sixteen years. I wasn’t old enough to race in the Women’s BRANDON VLACH \\ Eight years. MARKKI FARMER \\ Three years. ZAK FARMER \\ Seven years.

MARKKI FARMER \\ I used to race in the Junior Classes and Novice Class, but now I am old enough to race in the Pro Am Women’s class which I like the best!

WOT // What is your favorite race memory?

ZAK FARMER \\ I was finally able to move up to the Junior 14-15 class this year and was only running that at regionals. My team convinced me to run the Junior 16-17 class also, and I really like running both events!

NOAH PFEIL \\ Getting my first win in the Junior 14-15 Class.

COLE PARKER \\ Sport Lite is a great, competitive class to start in.

COLE PARKER \\ Two years.

CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Winning my first race on a 120. BRANDON VLACH \\ When I won Eagle River in 2011, Derby Weekend, and making my first Sport final in 2011. PETE SCHOETZ \\ Winning the Budweiser Cup in Plymouth last year. JAKKI FARMER \\ Podium at Mount Pleasant, Michigan. MARKKI FARMER \\ Beating my sister on the track. ZAK FARMER \\ Taking the sleds apart and putting them back together to watching all the other racers.

JAKKI FARMER \\ I tried Motocross but broke my arm the first time on the track. Dirt isn’t as forgiving as snow! MARKKI FARMER \\ No motorized sports, but I am on the swim team at school. ZAK FARMER \\ Yes, I have a Motocross bike that I mess around with. I have broken both arms on practice tracks so my mom won’t let me race it. COLE PARKER \\ I raced Ice Oval for a year.

WOT // Who taught you the ropes of racing? NOAH PFEIL \\ Jeff Thomson and Cody Holewinski from Fort Fremont Marine Racing. My dad taught me how to ride a sled, but did not have much information about racing, so Jeff and Cindy helped out with that. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ My dad. BRANDON VLACH \\ My dad. PETE SCHOETZ \\ I taught myself and learned from Jeff’s coaching. JAKKI FARMER \\ Warren Bartelt, a former Snocross racer and family friend. MARKKI FARMER \\ My sister, Jakki. She challenges me each race to push harder. ZAK FARMER \\ My cousin Mike and watching pros at the races. COLE PARKER \\ For the most part, I learned through watching some racers I met at my first practice. Since then, many people have given me tips and tricks to improve my riding.

WOT // Have you dipped into any other types of racing? NOAH PFEIL \\ In the summertime I’m active in Motocross. Snocross and Motocross are very similar due to the rhythm sections we endure as riders. It helps greatly to ride Motocross in the summer to keep us riders in shape. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Cross Country. It’s like Snocross but longer. BRANDON VLACH \\ I race Motocross, but Snocross is a lot tougher. PETE SHOETZ \\ I also race Motocross.

WOT // What is the most important piece of advice your coach, Jeff, has given you? NOAH PFEIL \\ Stay focused and never look back in turns. Run your own race and do not worry about the people behind you. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Just go out and have fun. BRANDON VLACH \\ Never give up! PETE SCHOETZ \\ Have fun! And we do it as a team. JAKKI FARMER \\ Jeff wants us to make sure that we have fun racing. MARKKI FARMER \\ Jeff tells me to try different lines during the race to see which ones work best for me.

NOAH PFEIL \\ Probably fitting in and becoming friends with the other team members. At first I was very shy and had a hard time talking to all of my teammates, but as the race season progressed, it became easier and I soon became a part of the family.

ZAK FARMER \\ Jeff tells me to race smart and not over-race, and to be patient on the track.

CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Being away from everyone so I could figure out plans for my upcoming races.

COLE PARKER \\ Charge hard and don’t stop. Never stop pushing to advance.

BRANDON VLACH \\ I have been injured and have not been able to compete as much as I wanted.

WOT // What is being on the Fort Fremont Racing Team like? NOAH PFEIL \\ Absolutely awesome! The team comes together like family. We always have each other’s back and most importantly have fun with each other. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ It’s fun because everyone is like family. BRANDON VLACH \\ It has been great. Our team is made up of a great group of racers and their families. PETE SCHOETZ \\ Probably the best teammates a guy could ask for. The team owner, Jeff, is a true friend, coach, and mentor.

ZAK FARMER \\ It is a lot of fun being on the Fort Fremont Team. We have a good group of racers on the team and we support each other. We do a lot of things together in the off-season which makes it fun, too! COLE PARKER \\ It’s a great experience. The team and everybody involved are extremely nice and willing to help out.

WOT // What challenges did you overcome to become a part of the team? MAR 2016

ZAK FARMER \\ Grabbing the fastest line. COLE PARKER \\ Honestly, I don’t think I have one besides pushing hard and riding as fast as possible.

WOT // What aspect of racing would you like to improve upon? NOAH PFEIL \\ Staying on top of rhythm sections and getting a rhythm through it.

PETE SCHOETZ \\ Always try to do my best for the team.

MARKKI FARMER \\ Racing clean through the whoop sections. MARKKI FARMER \\ Because we are gone

ZAK FARMER \\ I felt like I had to prove to the team that I could become faster and improve my racing in order to win races.

JAKKI FARMER \\ Fort Fremont is a great team to be a part of. This team is a part of my family. The parents are our mechanics, COLE PARKER \\ Thus far I haven’t really Jeff Thomson is our motivator and had many challenges…it’s been a smooth organizer, and everyone is there to cheer on ride! and support each other. I have made lifelong friends through this team. MARKKI FARMER \\ I was really excited when Jeff asked me to be on the race team. We have a lot of fun times in the trailer and there is a lot of support from everyone.

MARKKI FARMER \\ It’s a secret!!!

WOT // What is your unique racing strategy? NOAH PFEIL \\ I tend to ride more forward on the sled. It helps me lean over the sled in turns by keeping close to the centroid on the sled. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ The smoother the better. BRANDON VLACH \\ Being smooth is key. PETE SCHOETZ \\ I love corners. JAKKI FARMER \\ I don’t really have a strategy, but my goal on the track is to always race clean. I want to win races on my own merit and not take out another racer to win.

COLE PARKER \\ Definitely smoothness and the ability to become a part of the sled.

WOT // What is your strongest racing skill? NOAH PFEIL \\ Hole shot and jumping long distances. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Rhythm and jumping. BRANDON VLACH \\ Getting the hole shot. PETE SCHOETZ \\ My attitude. JAKKI FARMER \\ Racing clean and holding my line. MARKKI FARMER \\ “Big air will take you there!” ZAK FARMER \\ I can hit the big jumps this year! WOT // What is your favorite track to race on? Why?

NOAH PFEIL \\ Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. This track is one of the biggest tracks on the ISOC Tour, and it has big jumps to get some serious air. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Lake Geneva because it’s a track to overcome fear. BRANDON VLACH \\ Lake Geneva because there is not another track like it.

most? What do you admire about them? NOAH PFEIL \\ Tucker Hibbert and Kyle Pallin. I love to watch these two guys in the Pro Open Class because they can find lines so easily. I also love to study how they move their bodies in whoops and while they are in the air. I try to replicate that to my riding style.

PETE SCHOETZ \\ Kaukauna because it’s fast and wide open.

CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ I don’t really admire certain ones. I look at all of them to see what they do different.

JAKKI FARMER \\ Lake Geneva because the weather isn’t below zero and it’s the end of a long race season.

BRANDON VLACH \\ Ross Martin because of his work ethic.

MARKKI FARMER \\ Shakopee is the best because many people from my hometown come to that race, and the track is fun.

PETE SCHOETZ \\ Ross Martin because he never quits, and also Jake Angrove because he is always there to answer any questions you may have.

ZAK FARMER \\ Lake Geneva because I like running up the big hill at the start, and there are some big jumps.

JAKKI FARMER \\ Cody Kamm because he is fun to watch and he takes risks to win.

COLE PARKER \\ Definitely Lake Geneva. The atmosphere is incredible and the track is by far the most fun to ride.

MARKKI FARMER \\ Adam Peterson #113. He gives everyone in his class a run for their money! ZAK FARMER \\ Cole Cottew because he is very funny and a great racer.

WOT // What is the most important thing to know about a track? NOAH PFEIL \\ Smoothest lines. As racers we must figure out the smoothest lines to take so we can be fast and try to make our way to the top of the podium. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Probably the whole track because sometimes you have to memorize lines. BRANDON VLACH \\ The corners and how to come in and exit fast. PETE SCHOETZ \\ Snow conditions. JAKKI FARMER \\ What the fastest lines are. MARKKI FARMER \\ Where I can hit the doubles or if I can try to triple it. ZAK FARMER \\ I like to know where the rough spots are. COLE PARKER \\ I like to know I can get through the rhythm smoothly or at least get through it without a big mistake.

ZAK FARMER \\ Getting my first podiums in Deadwood, South Dakota. COLE PARKER \\ I’ve won a few regional heats and finals, but I’m still most proud of a national heat win. Hopefully a national final win soon!

WOT // What do you think is the most important thing to do before a race? NOAH PFEIL \\ Make sure the belt and clutches are clean and adjusted. Also make sure the shocks are on the right setting for the track. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Make sure I am mentally ready to go! PETE SCHOETZ \\ Prepare yourself mentally for the race. JAKKI FARMER \\ Make sure my sled has fuel in it. One time I ran out of fuel in staging…that wasn’t good. MARKKI FARMER \\ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

COLE PARKER \\ Kyle Pallin is by far my favorite pro racer. The way he rides is unique and fun to watch. His off season commitment and work ethic is also a huge asset.

ZAK FARMER \\ Eat food before racing. I hated eating because I was so nervous that it would make me sick, but then I ran out of energy to race well when I didn’t eat. My nerves are better now so I make sure I eat throughout the day.

WOT // What has been your greatest racing accomplishment thus far?

COLE PARKER \\ Prepare your body and mind. If you eat or drink bad, your body will not be ready to perform. Your mindset also has to be in a confident, winning state.

NOAH PFEIL \\ Winning two End of the Year Points Championships. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ Staying healthy through every season. BRANDON VLACH \\ Winning Eagle River Derby and leading every lap! PETE SCHOETZ \\ Just competing at my age.

WOT // Do you have any pre-race rituals? NOAH PFEIL \\ Before every race I always say a quick prayer in the staging line to protect me over the next race, and I always do the same stretches to loosen up the muscles before each race. CODY HOLEWINSKI \\ I just go relax.

JAKKI FARMER \\ So far, I have placed 3rd in National points two years in a row, and I am the Women’s Eagle River World Champion for the second year in a row.

BRANDON VLACH \\ Turning my socks inside-out.

MARKKI FARMER \\ Coming in 4th place at Shakopee and being the points champion last year for GNSS.

PETE SCHOETZ \\ To win a championship. JAKKI FARMER \\ I am considering retiring this year. I will be done with my schooling in June and hoping to work as an esthetician. Also joining blew off our old trailer on the way to South Dakota last year the team for Pro-Lites is James Johnstad while Cole Cottew it was not a fun deal at all,” laughs Jeff. “But somehow we put things back together enough and made it to the show.” Perhaps moves up to that division for his rookie year. it’s perseverance like that which will garner one an ISOC Team of the Year award!

Motocross and road biking. SPONSORS FXR, Hayford Ford, Amsoil, Fox Shocks, Hanco Utilities ABOUT ME I have been involved in motorsports nearly my whole life. I can remember when I was 2 1/2 years old when I just started to ride a little Kitty Kat and was always getting stuck and dad would have to come get me unstuck- I wish he would still do that!! It has been a great ride ever since! I have been a lot of different places around the country racing, mostly snocross and motocross. In the future I would definitely like to do a few more disciplines. In the summer I work mostly on engines for diesel tractor pulling with horsepower well into the thousands, but even so if I go more than a week without riding or jumping something I start to go crazy! I am very happy with where I am now in my career with Cottew Motorsports and am definitely excited to see how far I can go in racing!

WHAT MOTORSPORTS/OUTDOOR LIFESTYLES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? I race motocross, mountain bike and do stand-up jet skiingyes it still exists and it’s very challenging! SPONSORS FXR, Cottew Motorsports, Polaris, Amsoil, Fox Shocks, Woody’s Traction ABOUT ME Started racing snowmobiles when I was 10 after my brother got into the sport. It’s been a family sport for a long time. I was born and raised on our family farm and that is what I do with my brother. It’s nice to work hard in the summer and then snowmobile in the winter.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS 2014/2015 National Sports Champion, 2014/2015 ISOC Team of the Year. WHAT MOTORSPORTS/OUTDOOR LIFESTYLES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? I race Polaris RZRs in the Terracross Series during the summer. I also enjoy riding dirt bikes and jet skis in the summer. SPONSORS FXR, Hayford Ford, Amsoil, Fox, Hanco Utilities ABOUT ME I started racing snowmobiles when I was 14. My dad used to race, so I always wanted to try it. We always would try to get to one National per year. I had to make a deal with my mom about my grades, and I did it. The first race was an ISOC Regional in Hill City. From that point on I was hooked! My dad has always been devoted to Polaris, good thing because that is what I love too! The best thing about this sport is that my family supports me all the way. I couldn’t do this without them. When I first started racing, I loved hanging at the track. Not only did I meet the people I still hang out with today, but I love spending time with the little kids. That is how I got to know Jeremy Bester. And that is how my relationship started with FXR! ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD One of my favorite things FXR has done for me, is giving me the pink gear for Lake Geneva. I watched Lori Anderson battle through breast cancer and become a survivor. She is like a second mom to me. She even took time off of work to come support me in Lake Geneva, knowing the points battle could go either way. I was able to wear that pink FXR gear tall and proud, and in honor of her and every other person out there that has battled, or is battling cancer! The strength Lori showed while going through that battle, gave me strength as I went through the points battle. // MAR 2016
