“...the tame gardening tool is transformed into a rumbling racer that can burn some serious sod.”

Crammed between bikes and shovels and rakes, that riding lawn mower may not look like much sitting in the back of the garage. Even when it’s out in the yard, puttering along, it seems more Forrest Gump than Mark Martin. Strip off the cutting blades and give it room to run, though, and the tame gardening tool is transformed into a rumbling racer that can burn some serious sod. Capable of reaching speeds up to 90 mph, even NASCAR enthusiasts have to appreciate these “mowchines.’’ Go ahead, snicker all you want... what started as a challenge between buddies in a bar in Apple Valley, Mn 10 years ago, now has sometimes more than 8 races a year. The Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association (MNLMRA) events, held primarily at County Fairs, have ranged in location from Stanton, North Dakota to Mason City, Iowa and everywhere in between. Minnesota has also been home so several national events throughout the last decade. The MNLMRA, a local chapter of the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association, follows the USLMRA Rulebook in which there are provisions for safety, track layout and most importantly Class Structure. I won’t take the time to go into great detail but suffice it to say with 10 or so class’s lawn mower racing has something for everyone. Like many other motorsports there are several classes of racing from a virtually stock off the lawn riding mower to what is referred to as “Factory Experimental”. The Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association was founded in the fall of 2005 when one of the founding members was looking across the internet in search of modifications that would give him an edge MAY 2015

in an upcoming challenge, that had been set forth by a close friend, and by close I mean right on the next barstool !!!. While surfing the ol’ inter-webs he happened across the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association. He had found it, the big time. From there the rest is water sod under the bridge. They were off and running and have not looked back since…

TWIN CITIES HOT-RODDING [ brought to you from gstarod-custom.com ]

Hot rodding in the Twin Cities was working its way eastward from California by the late ‘40’s and ‘50’s. Although circle track racing with various types of cars had been popular in the area for years, street driven modified cars were still a rarity. The arrival of the small size magazines (Honk and Rod & Custom) on newsstands allowed the youth of the day to be made aware of what was happening elsewhere. South Minneapolis in the ‘50’s had a few modified cars that come to mind that caught the attention of those of us riding bicycles; a ’36 Ford coupe with fade-away running boards and LaSalle grill, a very nice ’50 Ford convert, a ’49 or 50 Chev sedan delivery and a ’40 Buick coupe are some examples. One of the prime car related activities of the car crazy youth was cruising. Popular streets for this in Minneapolis were Lake Street from the Flat Top drive-in near the river to Porky’s near Lake Calhoun. Another, for the North side, was the Sun Drive-in on Central Avenue. The popular St. Paul cruising street was University Avenue in the area of Porky’s drive-in. Unfortunately, this cruising activity often led to impromptu street races to see whose car was best, or fastest. The one-way streets that crossed Lake Street, Portland and Park, were the best because they were wide, with no oncoming traffic. Had to watch the cross streets carefully though. By 1953 there was an attempt to get the various clubs (Cogs, Combustion Cousins,

rainerd International Raceway’s (BIR) 2015 racing schedule, a jam-packed lineup with new exciting events, long-running favorites and everything in between, kicks off this month. The sixmonth schedule reflects a combination of thrilling spectator events and an increasing number of opportunities for fans to try their hand at racing. Like in past years, though, the name of the game this year is diversity: drag racing, road racing, snowmobile watercross, Superbike racing, a cruising event, endurance racing, drifting and autocross competitions and the BIR Performance Driving School. The schedule even includes Lakes Jam, a three-day music and camping festival.

New to this year’s schedule is MN Time Attack, which is entering its inaugural season. This unique event, which is on BIR’s schedule in May and September, is a chance for race fans to get behind the wheel on BIR’s road course and test their driving skills against the clock. One major change to the schedule involves the Trans Am Series, which was moved from the GSTA Muscle Car Shootout on Labor Day weekend to the PleasureLand RV Show & Go on Fourth of July weekend. The Trans Am Series’ 40-lap, 100-mile race on Sunday afternoon will be the weekend’s grand finale event. Another change to the Show & Go’s racing program is the addition of National Auto Sport Association (NASA) road racing. BIR hosted a NASA race in 2012 but hasn’t been able to fit the series on the schedule again until this year. NASA brings an exciting brand of wheel-to-wheel road racing, which will be on Saturday and Sunday, prior to the Trans Am Series race. One event that already was wildly popular got even better this year. The Wet & Wild Weekend in June will feature snowmobiles racing on open water, the Bracket Drag Racing Series on the drag strip and Superbike racing courtesy of a partnership between the Central Roadracing Association (CRA) and the Championship Cup Series from Texas.. The main attraction again this year is the 34th Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, set for Aug. 20-23. \\ A TRIBUTE TO ALL THE TROOPS // For me, the spring time weather means that the summer is just around the corner, but my fond memories of May have always been about the tribute to all our military personnel. When I think our military personnel I am referring to everyone that stepped up to the plate and that includes the militias before we gained our freedom. We recognize those brave souls every May with the tribute and remembrance during the Memorial Day Holiday. Or do we? Today the Federal Holiday seems to be more about barbequing, weekend getaway at the cabin or the products on sale that you just can’t live without. Think about that for a moment, the reason we are able to do these things freely is due to our military personnel fighting and maintaining our freedoms to go where we want, worship as we please and unfortunately at times use our freedom of speech to another level. I recently watched at a University, the display of students spitting, tearing and stomping on the American Flag. The reason? They do not like the way things are being run with our government in the United States of America. These are the same students that apply for student loans, specialized scholarships, government grants and government forgiveness programs. The same scholars that our educational institutions work with our government to lighten the financial burden on the student and their family. These selfish, self-centered, bastards forget that the reasons they can PAGE 22

enjoy the educational opportunities and their “RIGHT” to desecrate the American flag is because of the “FREEDOMS” that have been fought and died for since the 1770’s. I would like to see what would happen to some of these freeloaders if they tried that stunt in a war torn Middle Eastern country. Can you say beheading, stoning or crucifixion? They would crap their pants in a heartbeat. Several months ago, the terrorist group ISIS walked 1700 hundred college aged

students out to the desert and as they were neatly lined up, proceeded to shoot them in the back. Their crime, they were students getting an education which ISIS looks at as a threat to their cause. If the protesters on our college campuses could grasp hold of what luxuries, opportunities and freedoms they have, to choose the educational career path of their choice. In some Middle Eastern countries women do not have that freedom of choice or can even fathom getting an education. But

FIND US ON FACEBOOK “WHEELS OF THUNDER”

these creeps in the USA think the “MAN” is making it tough on them. On the other side of the coin we are fortunate to have a large contingent of high school graduates that see the military as a stepping stone to a career path. Maybe college is not for them at the moment, maybe they do not want to get sucked into the college drama, partying and financial pains. I attended a high school graduation last year, after all the scholarships and Magna Cum Laude’s were distributed the Dean asked for all students that have joined the military to stand up and be recognized. The class of 468 had 63 students that stepped up to the plate to represent the USA and be part of that PATRIOTIC new wave culture. These are the same high school seniors that sat in the same class, ate in the same lunchroom and enjoyed every extracurricular activity that their school or district had to offer, with these mindless jerks. How do we produce two extremely different graduates that see things so differently? It’s just a thought, but do you think it has much to do with the way they were raised, parented or disciplined? Here is a footnote to the numbers I used above, the 63 students that took the oath prior or post-graduation, had an additional 20 fence sitters that also raised their hand for God, Country, and the Flag. The same flag that the small minded and probably uneducated college students disrespect when they have a crowd present. Now I say uneducated only because of the constant MAY 2015

disconnect of current events that are on every news channel every night. Recently on one of the major cable networks, the roving reporter asked college students a series of questions. One question, have you heard of ISIS? Some of the answers from this highly educated group were, a Rap Group, a Boy Band and a new car to name a few. The bottom-line we have a big disconnect in this country, we have become too comfortable with society. The same students that take life for granted might see things differently when they see the antics of the terrorist groups’ recruitment in Minneapolis. In April, six young men were detained for a second time trying to flee to Syria to fight for ISIS to as they put it “Kill Americans”.

These are young men that were born in Minnesota, educated in the Minneapolis schools and enjoyed all the freedoms of life in America. These are the same punks that have had their hand out since they were infants getting food stamps, clothing stipends and government financial aid. Maybe instead of sitting in a class room, we need to have tours of the military cemeteries. Where the headstones are stretched out as far as the eye can see. I am sure that many of our good old Caucasian American students have not visited a sacred memorial in a long time. I will challenge every reader that enjoys the Memorial Day Federal Holiday, have a barbeque, go camping with the family, or just enjoy life as you see it. We had a lot of

men and women sacrifice their lives and the lives of their family for you to enjoy those freedoms. I only ask you this visit a veteran’s memorial display an American flag and thank a military person for their service and their sacrifice. From a person that has traveled around the world, I am thankful that I am an American and you should be too. In other countries you could not read a “Wheels of Thunder” type a magazine.

Have an awesome spring, a safe riding season and enjoy your freedoms. //

Ashley Lynn Graaf

Ashley Lynn Graaf can take on any runway you put in front of her, whether it’s on wheels or heels. As a young racer and model, she faces challenges that haven’t stopped her from building quite an impressive list of accomplishments in six short years. She’s on a fast track to reach her goal of racing NASCAR, and took some time to give us insight into her unique path.

AGE // 17 NUMBER // 00 HOMETOWN // Becker, MN CLASS // World Formula Open Class (previously raced in World Formula Open and KPV 100 Senior) RACING RITUAL // Handshake with Dad before each race, deep breaths, and thanking God for allowing me to race!

WOT // WHAT SPARKED YOUR PASSION FOR RACING? ALG // Racing was always around me growing up. My dad and brother were super big into NASCAR. All that my brother, Tyler, wanted to do was race. We raced our bikes and scooters down our sidewalk…we were always racing or trying to race! In the summer of 2008, I was in Florida for gymnastics nationals, and my mom got a call from my brother asking if he could spend $3,000 on a gokart. She was feeling guilty that we went to Florida without him, so she said yes. A year passed of my brother racing, and he finally convinced me to get in his kart and give it a shot. After one lap…I was hooked, and my parents knew they were in trouble! They bought me my own kart when I was eleven and took me out to the Stockholm Karting Center race track every weekend to practice. Even though I wasn’t good at all at first, I fell in love with racing. I improved quickly and felt more determined to get better and be more competitive. Even to this day, racing gives me a thrill that nothing else can! I MAY 2015

love every aspect of racing, from the thrill of driving to the greasy hands after a long day of work. WOT // IS THERE SOME SIBLING COMPETITION ON THE TRACK? ALG // My brother and I have a three year history of interesting battle! We’re in the same racing class, so we’ve raced together. I’ve been told it’s comical watching us race together because all we want to do is beat each other. On top of that, my boyfriend, Jordan Bernloehr, is in the same racing class as us. We all race in the Formula Open Class together! WOT // WHO’S THE CHAMP OUT OF THE COMPETITION? ALG // It definitely depends on the day! I have some rough luck when it comes to getting to the front, but once I’m there, I can pull out a few wins in a season. My brother, Tyler, is completely on or somewhat off. He can go many races winning every time, but he can also get caught up in crap and not do very well. My boyfriend, Jordan, has come out on

top the times he has raced my brother and me! Even so, I’m so lucky to have Tyler and Jordan to race with. They are both able to teach me so much and it’s always a great race. WOT // COULD YOU SEE YOURSELF FORMING A TEAM WITH THEM? ALG // It’s always a possibility! I think in the future it could definitely be an option, but right now, we all need to get our foot in the door and be seen first. WOT // WHAT STEPS DO YOU NEED TO TAKE TO GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR AND BECOME A TEAM? ALG // I have been told I’m a talented driver, but I just don’t have much experience. But, being female and a model, I’m more marketable when teams and sponsors look for a driver. Tyler has experience and championships going for him, but he has only raced one type of vehicle which is a disadvantage. Jordan is ready and currently is looking for a team. He has championships, tons of experience, and ran some of the biggest races in the world

with his dad and brother! If all goes as hoped and dreamed, we will all be able to make a career with our racing. I think it would be incredible if someday down the road we all end up on the same team. I would love that! WOT // WOULD YOU LIKR TO BRANCH OUT TO OTHER RACING VEHICLES? ALG // From the moment I started racing, I have always dreamed of racing other things! Racing vehicles cost a lot of money, so I knew if I ever wanted to race them, I would have to pay for it myself. That’s one of the initial reasons I started modeling… to buy a race car. I was interested in getting into Legend Car Racing or Late Models. Now that I know more about cars, I really want to try and get picked up by a team that could eventually lead me to something like IndyCar or NASCAR! WOT // WHAT DO YOU CURRENTLY RACE? ALG // I have two Mike Wilson Chassis. One is with a Four Cycle World Formula Engine on it, and the other with a two cycle KVP 100 Engine on it. I have raced all Intrepid Chassis before I got my Mike Wilson. WOT // WHAT WAS IT LIKE THE FIRST TIME YOU RACED YOUR MIKE WILSON? ALG // I didn’t know that I would completely fall in love with it! That thrill and excitement from the first time I drove is the same as now. I still get nervous before races, but once I’m going, the nerves go away. WOT // DID ANY TECHNIQUES SEEM TO COME NATURALLY TO YOU? ALG // I have very natural patience when it comes to my driving skills. Most drivers want to get to the front as soon as they can…and take themselves out of the race in the process of trying to do so. I take each race lap by lap and take my time getting to the front.

adjustments you can do, and it is even harder trying to do them! WOT // WHO TRAINED YOU? ALG // I haven’t had any actual training, but I have had experienced drivers give me tips throughout the years that have really helped me.

times by the time I finished one lap! It’s such a unique track. There are fourteen different turns and the track can be raced in eight different ways! I am still working on not getting ahead of myself. I started off the seasons so strong last year so I get so frustrated when I’m not doing as well. I just need to not look back on how I did the prior race day and start fresh each time.

WOT // WHAT TIPS HAVE YOU FOUND MOST VALUABLE?

WOT // I BET YOU’VE TAKEN SOME WINS SINCE THAT FIRST RACE! ALG // “To finish first, you must first finish.” WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST RACING That quote is hanging on the wall at the ACCOMPLISHMENT THUS FAR? race track, and it is so true. I have been ALG // Last season in 2014, I won the race taught to be a clean, safe driver. By doing day and beat a four-time and two-time that, I am able to finish races. champion…both who are very, very tough to beat. WOT // WHAT MAKES YOU A STRONG DRIVER?

ALG // My greatest strengths are my willingness to learn more and patience in the track. You can never improve as a driver, or as a mechanic, if you aren’t willing to try and learn new things. Being a patient driver is truly a gift because it’s not something everyone can be while driving. WOT // HOW DO YOU USE THIS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE? ALG // I take races turn by turn and am constantly thinking about what is going on around me. I think of my braking and acceleration point going in and coming out of turns. I think of the passes I need to make and how I should set them up. Turns and best spots to pass are the most important things to know about the track.

WOT // WHAT WEAKNESSES DO YOU WANT TO IMPROVE? ALG // Aggressiveness is my greatest weakness. I tend to give in too easy when someone is battling me for a position. I’d prefer to let them pass me than to cause an accident.

WOT // HOW DID THAT FEEL? AND HOW HAS IT FELT TO PLACE IN CHAMPIONSHIPS? ALG // It feels amazing to be handed an award. You just feel so accomplished, and realize that all of your hard work is truly paying off. A championship is very difficult to earn because it is your whole season worth of points. WOT // WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM AWARD TO WIN? ALG // IndyCar or NASCAR championship! WOT // DID A CERTAIN INDYCAR OR NASCAR DRIVER INSPIRE YOU TO BEGIN RACING? ALG // Even though she gets criticized a lot in the racing world, I have really looked up to Danica Patrick and would love to follow in her footsteps. Danica started out racing go-karts just like I am. Then she worked her way to IndyCar and is now in NASCAR. Along her way, she created a very successful modeling and acting career for herself. I’m going to have to work my butt off to get money and get connected with teams, but, I believe I can do it. Once I set my mind to something I don’t give up.

WOT // WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

WOT // HOW DID THESE SKILLS AND LESSONS COME TOGETHER FOR YOUR FIRST RACE?

ALG // Getting the kart tuned properly. Depending on the track and weather conditions, you have to make all different adjustments to your kart so it drives its best. It is difficult to learn all the different

WOT // YOU’RE ON THE RIGHT PATH! DO YOU DREAD HAVING TO FIGHT SOME OF THE SOCIAL STIGMAS DANICA HAS HAD TO?

ALG // My first race was on my hometown track, the same one I practiced on, Stockholm Karting Center in Cokato, Minnesota. I was really slow, but loved every minute of it. I got lapped about two

ALG // Girl drivers have it rough in the racing world because it is a male dominant sport. No man wants to admit that a girl might actually be a better driver than them.

The moment you prove them wrong and ALG // I would really try to enforce the cross that finish line in first place is by “Ladies First” rule! far one of the best feelings ever. From what I have learned and what Danica has WOT // GOOD CALL! WHAT proven, girls can be just as great, talented, ELSE IS IN YOUR RACING FUTURE? and successful drivers and racers as guys ALG // This year, as tough as it is going to can. They just have to believe they can be, I am not going to race a full season. I’m do it and have the mindset that nothing going to Paris for modeling as part of my someone says can discourage them. Right goal to earn enough money for a race car now, that is my twenty-four-seven mindset through modeling. I’ll be attending a big with everything I do! showcase that agencies and models from around the world come to in hopes of WOT // HOW DO YOU OVERCOME being picked up by an international agency. THE DISCOURAGEMENT? As soon as the time is right, I’m going to get ALG // There have been times where guys myself back into racing and hopefully get came up to me and yelled saying something myself on a pro team! I did wasn’t fair. It seems harsher because I’m a girl, but I like to believe it’s all for WOT // EITHER WAY, YOU’RE ON the love of the sport. I’m not afraid to SOME TYPE OF RUNWAY! DO YOU admit that I’ve gone up to guys and told HAVE ANY PLANS TO INTERTWINE them what’s what after a race. But, at the THE TWO FURTHER? end of the day, if there ever is an incident ALG // Someday down the road I really want where someone gets mad after a race, it is to organize a fashion show at a race track. talked out and apologies are made. I feel I think that would be really cool! most people get mad because they just really want the other person to know the possible danger they could have, or have caused.
