lizabeth Loberg doesn’t slow down too often, but during her successful race weekend at the Fall Fest on the Mississippi Thunder Speedway, she took the time to tell me her journey through racing. Her roots are planted in the race cars that lived in her garage and on the tracks her champion racer dad would win on. It only took seven years of learning off the track to get behind her own wheel of a Quarter Midget. Ten years later, she’s progressed to her favorite classification she would always watch and wonder if she’d ever drive in one, B-Modifieds. When she’s not scoring excellent grades and preparing for her senior year in Menomonie, taking college courses studying up for a future in business and marketing, hanging with friends, playing with her pup Pixie or going fishing, you can catch Elizabeth ripping up the track in her #15 neon pink and purple USRA B-Modified

WOT // How were you introduced to racing? LOBERG \\ Racing was introduced to me by my dad, Chris Loberg. I grew up always having a race car in the garage. He began in 2000, racing the Vintage Midwest Pavement Touring Series, won many championships, and even had a NASCAR Whelen Modified from Jonathan Brown and currently races the skyrocket from Jason Cummins.

I got a sponsor who bought me a Pure Stock. My sponsor was there every week giving me tips and tricks because he used to race Pure Stocks back in the day when they were more stock than they are today. My first season I ended up 5th in points at Mississippi Thunder Speedway. Now I’m

WOT // What made you decide you would become a racer?

WOT // What is one of your most proud racing moments from the beginning?

LOBERG \\ At first I decided to be a racer because I wanted to be like my dad. I wanted to win like my dad did on pavement. I looked up to him and I still do to this day. Back then, my reason for being a racer was because I wanted to be just like my dad, but now my reason is because it is my passion and I love it.

LOBERG \\ When I officially got 5th in points in my pure stock. I was beating the guy behind me by just a few points, so I had to finish ahead of him in all of my races that night. The moment I finished the feature and realized I had 5th in points officially was one of my most proud moments because it was my first points trophy. I also felt proud because I have something my dad doesn’t, and that’s a trophy from racing on dirt.

WOT // When did you get behind the wheel as a racer? LOBERG \\ When I was seven years old I started pavement racing in a Quarter Midget. My dad and I would load and haul it two hours to Elko Speedway on Saturdays to race and watch races all day. One of my last races ended in a big wreck, but to this day, I’m still friends with the kids I met in Quarter Midgets. Three years ago my dad and I started racing on dirt. I raced a Mini Mod/ Slingshot I got from a family we pit next to at Mississippi Thunder Speedway. The first time I tried it out my dad said, “wow, I didn’t know THAT was there!” Then NOV 2015

Midget and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was so nervous but excited. I had so many butterflies, I was hopping up and down in the truck the whole ride to Elko Speedway. My first race was a lot to take, but I went out there and I had a blast! I remember getting out of my car and saying, “Dad, my neck is very sore,” because my helmet was so big I was like a bobble head. My dad looked so proud when he saw me after the race. The whole day is one of my favorite memories I’ll remember forever.

in a Skyrocket B-Modified and loving it. If it weren’t for my dad I probably wouldn’t be racing. WOT // What was your first race like? LOBERG \\ My first race was in the Quarter

WOT // How did it feel to run your first B-Mod race that you always dreamed of doing? LOBERG \\ That first race is one I will NEVER forget. I always stood on the hill at the races watching the B-Mods, wondering if I would ever be in one of them, and thinking of how much fun they looked. It was one of my personal goals to have a B-Mod at some point in time, and I never

imagined me having one at the age of 16. It blew my mind and I couldn’t even explain the happiness I felt! My first race was at Mississippi Thunder Speedway. In my heat race I remember just running the bottom and feeling the car to get used to it when the pack came to lap me. When they did, one of the car drove too close to me and spun right in front of me! They bounced off my tire across the front of my car. I turned my wheel up just a bit to avoid the crash and came out without a ding on my car. WOT // How did you learn to become such a smart racer? LOBERG \\ Through my dad. If I didn’t have my dad, then I would not have had all of the amazing opportunities that I have had through racing. My dad taught me it is most important to race the track, learn my car, and to absorb. I ask questions and try to absorb any piece of advice that anyone has for me. I always ask what people think of my race because I want to be critiqued on what I can do differently. I don’t believe that anyone has perfected anything; there is always room for improvement. This whole season I have started in the back just so I race the track myself and learn. My dad and I work on our cars together. I don’t know how to do everything yet, but my dad gives me new tasks to learn when he thinks I am ready for another challenge. I have learned a lot since I was seven years old thanks to my dad. WOT // How has your confidence in your racing evolved? LOBERG \\ When I first raced my B-Mod I was very nervous before every race and would need to be buckled in and sit in my

car for at least three races before my turn because it calmed me. Now I can hop in one race before mine. I still get jitters, but everyone should get jitters if they really love what they do, because the moment that you don’t get jitters then you shouldn’t be doing it. I think about who is in my race, what the track is like, and get more and more excited every second I’m in my car leading up to my race. WOT // What do you think is the most important thing to do before each race? LOBERG \\ I like to have my own space to get into my own little zone. I take a deep breath, settle into my driver’s seat, and start getting buckled in while my dad stands next to my car in case I have last minute comments. It’s important for me to feel settled in my car before going out to a race because I don’t like to feel stressed or rushed before going out on the track. WOT // What racing strength does this come from? LOBERG \\ I keep calm no matter what. WOT // Any aspects you’re looking to improve upon? LOBERG \\ I have a lot to improve on, but if I could improve on anything, I would love to improve on speed and getting my corners down. It will just take more seat time :)

talked with Jenae and she has given me a few tips and tricks. She’s very nice. When you’re watching Jenae race, you can see the determination through her racing, and that really inspires me! WOT // What are some of your personal goals this race season? LOBERG \\ Every season I make challenging goals for myself. I like to push myself. This year my biggest goal was to make my first A-Main in a B-Modified, and I accomplished that at Deer Creek Speedway. That is a win in my book! I also made goals to not get lapped and not box my corners. I am getting better at my corners and tried changing my set up around a bit which helped. I tried the setup at Deer Creek Speedway and I loved it.

You can follow Elizabeth and her dad’s racing on their Facebook page “Loberg 15 Racing.” With this determination, wisdom, and talent, we’ll be watching Elizabeth combine her degree with racing to make quite the successful business someday! I’m picturing shelves full of trophies lining the walls. //

WOT // What racers inspire you? LOBERG \\ Jenae Gustin. She is my role model. I admire that she is such an amazing driver – clean, precise, and fast. She is a great example that you don’t have to be a dirty driver to be fast. I have personally

IT WAS ANOTHER INTENSE WEEKEND OF RACING FOR TERRACROSS CHAMPIONSHIP. The third and fourth rounds took place at the annual Sno Barons Hay Days, which is the kick off for winter for snowmobilers and nationally known swap for power sports enthusiasts. Walker Evans/Polaris RZR RJ Anderson came out on top on Day 1, with the Final win! While Go Pro’s, Dana Creech took the Final on day 2! The TerraCross track was once again grueling and made for some tough racing and included TerraCross’ signature over-under jump, as well as more technical sections. The course once again introduced the Mystik Mangler section, which incorporated a large dugout wall section of tires, allowing the RZRs a dramatic launch over the tires. Mystik Lubricants / ATVRiders.com driver Mickey Thomas scored a third-place finish and sits third in points after Rounds 3 and 4 of the TerraCross Championship Pro RZR UTV series at Sno Barons Hay Days. Mickey is excited about his performance this weekend and is looking forward to the upcoming events! “Mystik goes hand in hand with Polaris Industries,” added Thomas. It’s perfect when you have a RZR. They build an awesome product. It’s a good partnership to have. They support TerraCross. Being a Mystik sponsored guy is pretty cool.” The final doubleheader of the Terracross Championship season has been postponed, and the new date and location will be announced in the near future after some issues came up for the event originally scheduled for Charlotte Motor Speedway. Joe Duncan said there is still plenty of action and activity that will be at Charlotte! “This will be an event I’ve envisioned as we grow the Terracross brand. Charlotte will be a true Terracross Experience, with racing, drive and ride opportunities, autograph signing and up close and personal interaction with some of the top racers in the world!” The final doubleheader weekend of the Terracross Championship to be announced. //

JIM DUNN PAYS TRIBUTE TO

NOSTALGIA RACING IN DALLAS

The theme for Jim Dunn Racing at the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals is Nostalgia. Before driver John Hale jumped behindthe-wheel of the Jim Dunn Racing Mopar Funny Car, he was a Nostalgia Funny Car Champion, and still races in this class when not competing in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. At Hale’s hometown race in Dallas, the Jim Dunn Racing Funny Car will be wrapped to look like Hale’s Nostalgia Funny Car – One Bad Texan.

Hale will not be running his One Bad Texan scheme on his Nostalgia car, but instead will have a new design to pay tribute to Big Jim Dunn. Fans will have to wait a few days to see what the car will look like; Hale is keeping the car under wraps. //

Don’t even try to tell Maria “Mustang Sally” Erickson to slow her Mustang down (or slow anything down for that matter). This woman has a passion for life that emanates from every pore in her body. From cars (Mustangs in particular), her family, her job, and giving back to the community, it seems limitless.

At age 58, Erickson is comfortable in her Coupe with a 302 Engine, C4 Automatic own skin and has a made peace with the Transmission, 4bbl carb with beefed cam, fact that she isn’t your stereotypical female. But as a 7 year old girl, Erickson had, as she puts its, “no interest whatsoever in the difference between a 1964 and a 1965 Thunderbird!”

This is the only organized race Erickson currently competes in. “Neither of us have any drag strip experience,” she says. “This gives us a chance to get that.” Erickson is self-admittedly car crazy and knows that some people might see her as a little over-the-top (she even named her dog Rear Differential, A.K.A Posi). She confesses that her children were concerned, but only for a time. “All three of my kids have gone from saying, you know Mom, we think you’re taking this to a level that is really not healthy, to saying, I really get this now!” Her husband gets it too. As an adult, she says that feeling of being different remained. “Carl and I are very involved in our church and even there, I still felt like I didn’t quite fit the mold.” Erickson does point out that this feeling is “on her”, not on others.” “I don’t think people deliberately ostracized me, it was really about me and how I felt different and uncomfortable. I felt very much not a woman because I was into cars.”

“We have traveled all over the country with our Mustangs,” Erickson points out. “We did the 50th Anniversary Mustangs Across America run where over 550 Mustangs went from L.A. all the way to North Things are different now that she has come Carolina. In doing this amazing thing we to embrace the beauty of being her own also helped raise over $15,000 for the NC person, her own kind of woman, and being Patriot Guard.” The run ended in grand “different” if you will. “If nothing else, I am style for Erickson. love cars,” says Erickson. “I never thought there were other women out there like me but I am learning that is not true. There are a lot of women out there who love their cars. It doesn’t matter if it’s a rice burner, American muscle or modern, they just love their cars.” Perfect examples of such women are Erickson’s “sistas from another mistas”, as she calls them, the MnCarQueenz. This new group of car enthusiasts is made up of all women. “Even though I am probably the only the only woman with an American muscle car, I am really, really proud of this group,” says Erickson. “Most of the women have modern cars but those girls crank on their cars and love on them just the same as I do.” That respect is mutual says Erickson. “This is a group of young women. I am probably the oldest girl in the group but they are interested in my classic cars and what I bring to the table.” There might be age differences and car differences but as Erickson points out, “These ladies are excited about their cars, they’re excited about the newer cars, they’re excited that they are women who found other women who are into cars.” The Car Queenz is only one of the many clubs of which Erickson is a member. She and Carl also belong to the Upper Midwest Region Shelby Club, MSRA, GTSA, and DragLinks. Choosing which clubs to belong to is not something Erickson and NOV 2015

THE EVOLUTION OF U.S. CHROME

AMERICA’S FIRST NIKASIL PLATING SHOP

A

t the start of World War II, America entered its golden age of manufacturing – the industrial era which ran through the 1940s up until the end of the 1960s. Dependable military equipment was obviously in critical need, but so was the need to reduce corrosion, wear, galling, and fretting on a wide array of industrial equipment and everyday machinery. Many industrial sectors served just that, and at the forefront were pioneers of the technique and founders of U.S. Chrome, Roger Reath and Lou Raymond. As employees of General Electric in 1939, at that time the world’s largest appliance factory located in Bridgeport, Connecticut- these men were anxious to apply their substantial engineering experience to work in their new venture. They first noticed the need to plate reflective coatings on bumpers but then saw the bigger picture – developing a thicker, harder, industrial chrome plating which would add extreme

durability, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, not just a mirror finish. Reath and Raymond applied their developments to essential markets that drive our country including defense, aircraft, automotive, agriculture, and machinery, just to name a few. This 75 year tradition is now being carried on by Roger Reath’s grandson, U.S. Chrome’s Corporation of Wisconsin’s owner, Scott Reath. Growing up in the plating business and working around plating his whole life, Scott carries surface coating in his DNA. He completed law school in Connecticut in 1994, practiced for two years, then realized his true sense of accomplishment would not be found in trading papers and suing people, but instead in producing and providing valuable products. The family business of U.S. Chrome allowed him to do just that. Now Scott spends his days applying advanced plating chemistry, Nikasil and NiCom® electro-plating,

PAGE 40 FIND US ON FACEBOOK “WHEELS OF THUNDER”

power sport cylinder repair, aluminum tig welding, mechanical boring, and diamond plateau honing. Not only that, but Scott’s business performs high quality in-house graphite “line-2-line” piston skirt coatings and thermal barrier piston dome coatings. Scott manages a staff of 20 employees who truly set U.S. Chrome’s process far from the competition. Two PhD chemists ensure that the huge array of testing equipment like atomic absorption units, profilometers, and Vickers hardness testers are top quality that result only in the most effective, lasting, durable cylinder bores available anywhere in the world. U.S. Chrome’s NiCom®-plated coating will not streak, scuff or “stripe”, saves their customers money over buying new or re-sleeving, offers thicker and harder plating over factory coatings, precision piston-to-wall clearances, and custom porting will not be lost.

NOV 2015

U.S. Chrome buys used and worn cylinders and offers a huge inventory or ready-to-swap snowmobile cores for One-day winter exchanges! Even if you don’t happen to be a rocket scientist with NASA (which U.S. Chrome has paired with in creating improved material on titanium substrates), they are not above applying their technology to your firearms, agricultural harvesters, or motor sport equipment to give you the competitive edge. Get your cylinders plated with NiCom®, and you’ll have increased bore wear resistance, durability, heat transfer increase to your horsepower, increased lubricity and oil retention and reduced frictional piston “ring drag.” Environmentally friendly Chrome plating alternatives like NiCom® (AKA Nikasil or Nickel Composite) and cobaltbased Tricom® have become an essential asset to the plating industry, and U.S. Chrome is the pioneer of it all. Chrome alternatives are especially preferable in the power and motor sport cylinder bore applications because oil retention is vitally important to performance, and chrome is so dense it does not sufficiently retain oil. NiCom® is far superior over cast iron or hard chrome for sliding wear applications like piston sealing and internal combustion engine bore applications. The magic works because NiCom® plating is a composite electroplated matrix coating consisting of nickel, silicon carbide, and other proprietary ingredients which increases hardness and lubricity. The plated hardness value is guaranteed at a minimum of 625 Vickers, or 62 Rockwell-C on the hardness scale. Wheels of Thunder racers...you know who to call! Experience, technical depth, and business integrity are what sets U.S. Chrome apart. They’ve invented the process and have seen it all from chainsaws, drones, dirt bikes, ATVs, Monster drag sleds, Porsche 911s, 944s and 928s, all the way up to every 1650 HP Mercury Marine V8 ever built! Top this off with the chemical expertise, process control, and faster turnaround time, and this company champions the plating industry. Check out U.S. Chrome’s website www.usnicom.com, call toll free (866-922-5066), or email them at sales@usnicom.com to set up steps to make your machine run at peak performance. // NOV 2015
