Spring Arizona Restaurant Week

HOT DATES MAY

EVENTS

May 20-29 Restaurant Week—which happens just twice a year—is a foodie’s dream, with participating locations across the state offering three-course prix fixe menus for just $33, $44, or $55 per person, or even per couple in some instances. It’s a perfect time for diners to explore the state’s culinary breadth and the talent of chef-driven establishments. Dishes not normally served are often featured on these menus, giving chefs a chance to think further outside their creative box and use very seasonal items while giving diners a taste of something new. Some restaurants also offer wine pairing selections to accompany the menu for an additional cost. Takeout is also available. ww.arizonarestaurantweek.com

Choices, Choices… It’s here! The highly anticipated cocktail menu from the awardwinning cocktail lounge and eatery Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour is now available. What’s all the fuss about? The locale debuts a completely reinvented and reimagined menu yearly— and this is not your typical menu. The 2022 Cocktail Compendium is a hand-illustrated, 20-page creation, highlighted by 22 all-new cocktails and new twists on several returning favorites. It includes eight non-alcoholic drinks, an expanded selection of cocktail-style shots, and more. Oh, and did we mention this yearly menu has been named one of the Top 10 Best Cocktail Menus in the world multiple times by the prestigious Tales of The Cocktail, as well as won multiple local awards? Choose your favorite libation and pair it with one of the locale’s innovative bar bites. 1 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix; www.bitterandtwistedaz.com

New restaurant Carcara recently debuted at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. Led by Executive Chef Chaz Frankenfield and Chef de Cuisine Angy Dykstra, Carcara—with its distinctive, welcoming, modern design that includes a large tree focal point—ushers in a Native American and Sonoran-inspired menu that uses seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Menu selections range from the Prickly Pear Ribs, Baja Shrimp Ceviche, and Crispy Eggplant Taco, to Prosciutto-Wrapped Seared Sea Scallops, and more. Thirsty? Try the hand-crafted, citrus-influenced cocktails inspired by well-known Arizona hiking trails. Those who love the acclaimed restaurant Maple & Ash have a new locale to try— the highly anticipated restaurant etta, which is the second restaurant concept from the same restaurant group. Now open at Scottsdale Quarter, etta is led by two-time Michelin-starred chef Danny Grant. Its name is short for Henrietta, which is French for “keeper of the hearth”—fitting, since etta’s wood-fired hearth is the foundation of its menu offerings. Try the wood-fired pizzas, fire-roasted oysters, wood-fired chicken, and the fireroasted whole branzino. There are also house-made pastas and fresh salads. Open for dinner only. 5301 N. ountains surround Metro Phoenix (hence its nickname as “The Valley”), as well as rise within. For stunning views, head to these locales. A REWARD AT THE TOP While it requires some effort to access these views, your hard work will be rewarded. Put on your sneakers, grab some sunscreen and water, and spend some time hiking. The Valley’s iconic Camelback Mountain (6131 E. Cholla Lane, Phoenix and 5700 N. Echo Canyon Parkway, Phoenix)—so called because its shape resembles that of a reclining camel—offers two trails that lead to a summit that sits 2,704 feet above sea level. Both are challenging hikes, but the 360-degree views are worth it. While Camelback is the highest peak in the Valley, Piestewa Peak (2701E. Piestewa Peak Drive, Phoenix) is the second-highest and also offers stunning views. There is one summit trail and it’s challenging, but the 1,200 foot gain views are stunning. At Papago Park find Hole-in-the-Rock (625 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix), which is, well, a hole in a rock. Wind and rain caused the erosion that created this unique feature, which is large and perfectly frames the Valley below.

A MEAL & A VIEW Take in 360-degree views with a meal at Compass Arizona Grill (www.phoenix.regency.hyatt.com), the state’s only revolving rooftop restaurant. Located on the 24th floor of the Hyatt Regency

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN

Phoenix in Downtown Phoenix, it offers seasonal and regional New American meals with an ever-changing view. Also in Phoenix, though a little more north, Wrigley Mansion (www.wrigleymansion.com) offers both the popular Geordie’s and Christopher’s (led by James Beard award-winning chef Christopher Gross) restaurants, as well as tours of the historic mansion that was built by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. in 1932. The locale is perched atop a mountain, with the city sprawled out beneath it. Meanwhile, Different Pointe of View (www.tapatiocliffshilton. com) is perched atop North Mountain, and is the longest consecutively awarded AAA Four-Diamond restaurant in Phoenix. It offers seating indoors and out, and views as satisfying as the meals. Rustler’s Rooste (www.rustlersrooste.com) is at the top of South Mountain, and is considered a cowboy steakhouse, with ”beef and brew and a view.” A unique locale (check out the slide that links the second floor saloon with the restaurant below!), there’s also live country Western music nightly. At Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes, find Top Of The Rock (www.marriott.com), which offers contemporary, locally inspired American dishes, as well as 260-degree views of the Valley.

WORTH THE DRIVE From Phoenix or Scottsdale, head east on Shea Boulevard towards Fountain Hills for the Fountain Hills Viewing Point (14845 E. Shea Blvd, Fountain Hills). It's a small parking area to the side the road designed for those looking for scenic views—and it delivers.

THINGS TO DO

IN THE VALLEY

Unique Locales Around the Valley

I

n addition to its amazing museums, resorts, golf courses, and restaurants, Metro Phoenix has many unique locales that you won’t find elsewhere. Make sure to stop by these must-see sights. MICHELLE GLICKSMAN 1 THE BAT CAVE

Each summer, several thousand Mexican free-tailed bats and canyon bats make their home in the Maricopa County Flood Control Tunnel. They usually emerge just before sunset between June and August to eat, though can sometimes be seen March to October, too. Catch the evening spectacle of them flying around—just make sure not to touch them. From the 40th Street/Camelback Road intersection in Phoenix, find the tunnel on the north side of the Arizona Canal; wwwazgfd.com

40

2 THE DOORS AND SOUND PASSAGE

Have you ever stepped into a kaleidoscope? You can at the corner of Scottsdale and Camelback roads in Scottsdale. Here, find two artworks in one. The first is a work titled The Doors by artist Donald Lipski. From the outside, there are three massive doors leaning against each other, and inside are polished metal surfaces that fracture and mirror back the image of anyone who steps inside. Inside is also Sound Passage by artist Jim Green, which features a variety of sounds. www.scottsdalepublicart.org

3 SOLERI BRIDGE AND PLAZA

Not far from The Doors and Sound Passage is Soleri Bridge and Plaza, designed by Paolo Soleri. This pedestrian bridge and gathering spot is also a solar calendar. A 6-inch gap between the work’s two 64-foot pylons allows a space for the sun to create a shadow each day at noon. On the summer solstice, no shadow is cast, and on the winter solstice, the longest is cast. 4420 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.scottsdalepublicart.org

4 ORGAN STOP PIZZA

A Valley staple for 50 years, Organ Stop Pizza attracts hundreds of thousands of patrons each year who visit to see its Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ—the largest and finest theater organ in the world today. World-class musicians offer theatrical performances served up alongside pizza, pastas, sandwiches, and a salad bar. Songs played range from classical music and Disney favorites to pop and rock hits. 1149 E. Southern Ave., Mesa, www.organstoppizza.com

5 MYSTERY CASTLE

Built by Boyce Gully for his daughter as an homage to the sand castles they had built on a beach in Seattle, this locale, made of native stones, has 18 rooms, 13 fireplaces, parapets, and many nooks and crannies. Gully died in 1945 before his daughter could see his creation, though she later moved in as an adult. Today, visitors are lucky to be able to tour the unique destination. 800 E. Mineral Road, Phoenix; www.mymysterycastle.com

6 JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN OF PHOENIX

We bet that you wouldn’t expect to find a lush and authentic Japanese garden in the middle of the desert, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix. A project of the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan, here visitors can stroll the 3.5-acre stroll garden, enjoy an authentic tea ceremony, and view a 12-foot waterfall. 1125 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix; www. japanesefriendshipgarden.org
