HOOP DANCING’S ARTISTRY AND ATHLETICISM
“Hoop Dancing is a cultural tradition shared across many Tribal communities in North America,” explains Daniel Hagerty, director of strategic development and programming for the Heard Museum. A unique type of dance, it can involve the use of more than 50 hoops. “To many who participate, Hoop Dance represents an opportunity to celebrate cultural traditions, and pass them down to future generations. Because it is a form of movement that many different Tribal communities engage in, Hoop Dancing also allows for those from different Tribal backgrounds to come together in fellowship,” Hagerty explains. The hoop, a circle, is an important symbol to many Native people. The hoop itself, and the form of Hoop Dancing, represents the circle of life, the continuous
cycle of life and death, the cycle of seasons—even the male and the female. In Arizona, Hoop Dance is both practiced and celebrated—and both competitions and performances are showcased. This month draws spectators and participants from North America and Canada to the Heard Museum for the 30th Annual Heard Museum World Championship Hoop Dance Contest (heard.org). The event kicks off on Friday evening, February 7, and the contest—showcasing artistry, athleticism and cultural traditions and drawing top American Indian and Canadian First Nations hoop dancers—will be held Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9. There are five divisions, ranging from Tiny Tots (5 and under) to Senior (40 and older), and five judges, who hail from across the

United States and Canada. Participants are competing for the prestigious World Champion title, as well as cash prizes. Those who will be in town through the beginning of March can attend Native Trails on March 5 (11 a.m.) and March 7 (noon).
