You don’t need to be a chic wine snob to step into Chic Chef 77 Bistro & Wine Bar, but you’ll certainly consider yourself one by the time you walk out. Featuring a menu complete with wine pairings to enhance dining experiences by heightening flavors and texture, this bistro and wine bar offers special events highlighting Black-owned wine makers, as well as paint and sip parties, all presented in an upscale environment.

Nik Fields, a celebrity chef, entrepreneur, and restaurateur, launched the locale with the aim of promoting education and discovery among wine-lovers old and new. She helps sippers pair wine and foods based on chemical compounds and the overall impact on the five senses.

RAISE A GLASS

Local favorite PHX Beer Co. is a brewery created to bring Phoenix to its customers and ignite the craft beer scene. The popular locale recently released its newest IPA—Zanjero Juicy Hazy IPA—and it pays homage to those in charge of Arizona’s water distribution.

Since the late 1800s, the Zanjeros would travel near and far, opening local canals to ensure water flows out of faucets and was available for local crops. Without these “Ditch Riders,” not only would local residents not have water, but they wouldn’t have beer.

For this reason, PHX Beer Co. gives thanks to the Zanjeros with this IPA created in their honor. Game Time!

Why play regular MONOPOLY when you can play the new Scottsdale edition? Go Wild

Lions, elephants, monkeys … and art. Yes, that’s right. The Phoenix Zoo— home to more than 3,000 animals—along with the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation, recently debuted the art gallery Wild Side Gallery. The zoo’s 1970s Activity Center, a classic building originally designed by famed Valley architect William Cartmell, was renovated into this new venue.

Artwork will be showcased over 2,400 square feet, and the space will serve as the zoo’s first dedicated venue for its rotating exhibits of Art on the Wild Side, a program focused on inspiration, celebration, and conservation through art.

The gallery opened in last month and is currently showcasing the renowned National Geographic exhibit, “Between River and Rim: Hiking Across the Grand Canyon.”

Creativity is all around. Wander through local art galleries, view a public art installation, or tap into your artistic side at a craft or painting locale. Here are some of our favorite destinations.

GALLERIES

Scottsdale

Scottsdale has a robust art scene, with more than 100 art galleries within the city’s boundaries. Approximately 30 of those galleries are located in Scottsdale’s Arts District—an area defined as Main Street from Scottsdale Road to Goldwater Boulevard and north on Marshall Way, across Indian School Road to the Horse Fountain on 5th Avenue.

American Fine Art Inc. (www.warhol.me) is located in a 12,000-square-foot space and showcases works by internationally acclaimed masters such as Pablo Picasso, Norman Rockwell, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, Banksy, LeRoy Neiman, Jean-Claude Novaro, and Marc Chagall—to name just a few. The gallery draws everyone from collectors to prominent art museums.

At Larsen Gallery (www.larsengallery.com), find more than 500 works by more than 180 artists. It is known for both its represented artists and its consigned art for sale.

Meanwhile, The Legacy Gallery (www.legacygallery.com) features representational and impressionistic art across a variety of subject matter, including Western, figurative, wildlife, still-life, and landscape.

At Bonner David Galleries (www.bonnerdavid.com), which has locations in both Scottsdale and New York, find both a contemporary and traditional galleries existing side-by-side.

Tip: On Thursday evenings, Scottsdale ArtWalk is held in Scottsdale’s Arts District from 7-9 p.m. The free event is a perfect time to wander the participating galleries, meet artists, listen to live music, and more. On March 2, a special Native Spirit-themed ArtWalk will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. (www.scottsdalegalleries.com).

Get Creative

Feeling inspired? There are plenty of places to get your own creativity flowing and create artwork and memories. At Pinspiration (www.pinspiration.com), which has locations in North Phoenix and Mesa, choose from a variety of craft and painting projects. Meanwhile, paint away during a session at The Brush Bar (www.thebrushbar.com) in Downtown Scottsdale, while sipping on wine or beer. In Chandler, Burst of Butterflies (www.burstofbutterflies.com) offers painting and pottery sessions. And As You Wish (www. asyouwishpottery.com) has multiple Valley locations and is a pottery painting destination perfect for both kids and adults.

Phoenix

Phoenix is also an art hub, and the Roosevelt Row Arts District is known for its public art, live music performances, art galleries, boutiques, and small businesses. The walkable creative district runs between 7th Avenue and 16th Street on Roosevelt Street.

Stop by eye lounge (www.eyelounge.com), a contemporary, artist-run space that fosters emerging and established visual artists. Each month, the gallery features new exhibits by Arizona artists.

There’s also Modified Arts (https://modifiedarts.org), which showcases artwork from both local and international artists via monthly exhibits.

Just a few steps off of Roosevelt Street is FOUND:RE Phoenix, which houses FOUND:RE Contemporary (www.foundrehotels. com/contemporary). The gallery showcases both emerging and established artists through monthly exhibitions and special events.

And, in Downtown Phoenix, find Bentley Gallery, which features mid-career and museum-collected artists from the U.S.

Another popular locale in Phoenix, The Segrado Galleria (www.thesegrado.org), is the only community arts organization and art gallery in South Phoenix that nurtures the community’s cultural identity.

Tip: First Fridays is a free event held the first Friday of the month in Downtown Phoenix, and features open galleries, vendors, musicians, and artists of all varieties. 6-10 p.m. (www.artlinkphx.org)

On Display

In addition to galleries galore, Metro Phoenix is filled with public art installations. Here are a few of our favorites.

Her Secret is Patience: This unique piece by Janet Echelman is made of flexible polyester netting suspended 38 feet above the ground at Civic Space Park. The sculpture billows and ripples in the wind, reflecting the iridescent beauty of Southwestern light. 424 N. Central Ave., Phoenix

Soleri Bridge and Plaza: Paolo Soleri created this unique artwork that serves as a pedestrian bridge, solar calendar, and gathering place. The bridge, which is anchored

by two 64-foot pylons with a 6-inch gap between them, is situated at a true north axis, allowing it to mark solar events produced by the sun’s shadow. 4420 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale

Water Mark: This eye-catching series of five aluminum equine gargoyles, created as a nod to the area’s historic ranches, was created by Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan, and offers a unique feature—during flooding events, water pours from the horses’ mouths. 7605 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale

The Doors and Sound Passage: This two-artworks-in-one piece features three massive doors leaning against each other and was created by Donald Lipski. Around the Valley

Beyond Scottsdale and Phoenix, there are galleries across the Valley.

Vision Gallery (www.visiongallery.org) in Chandler is the locale for evolving exhibitions across a variety of media, from drawings to paintings and sculptures to photography. The works featured are all created by local and regional artists, and a percentage of the artwork sales helps fund free arts education workshops for local youth.

In Tempe, the Fine Art Complex 1101 (wwwfineartcomplex1101. com) presents contemporary works across a variety of mediums by local, national, and international emerging and established artists. The gallery is housed in a landmark building designed by modernist architect Will Bruder.

And in Carefree, Thunderbird Artists Gallery (www. thunderbirdartistsgallery.com)—opened by the organization that produces award-winning, juried fine art and wine festivals around the Valley—features both local and international artists.

While plenty of memories are made when visiting a destination, why not a physical souvenir, too? There are plenty of destinations in Metro Phoenix where you can find unique products that represent the state—everything from a Cosanti windbell to a bottle of grown-in-Arizona wine to jewelry made with a locally mined gemstone to olive oil, and yes, even your own mini cactus.

Jewelry

If you look to the east, there is a mountain that has four peaks. It’s in the Mazatzal Mountains, and in that mountain lies the Arizona

Four Peaks Amethyst mine. Located high up, the mine is believed to be the only precious stone mine in the country that requires a helicopter to transport supplies in and take mined material out. The Four Peaks amethyst is rare and features a red flash when viewed under natural light. It is found in only one other place in the world. Find the gemstone and other jewelry at Four Peaks Mining Co. Store (www.fourpeaksminingco.com) in Scottsdale, as well as Sami Fine Jewelry (www.samifinejewelry.com) in Fountain Hills.

Food & Wine

Take home a taste of the Valley from Queen Creek Olive Mill (www.queencreekolivemill.com). Located in Queen Creek, this agritourism destination brings visitors from Arizona and beyond to experience the traditions and processes behind olive oil. Their award-winning extra virgin olive oil and flavored oils are crafted in small batches under the meticulous supervision of their

professional olive oil sommelier. Find them at the mill location or at the company's store in Scottsdale.

In Old Town Scottsdale, find Sphinx Date Co. (www. sphinxdateranch.com), an Arizona institution for more than 65 years. Take home locally sourced dates and a variety of other edible delights from local producers, from prickly pear fruit to salsas and sweets to tea.

Also in Old Town Scottsdale you can follow the Scottsdale Wine Trail (www.scottsdalewinetrail.com), which takes you to seven tasting rooms, each of which features wine grown in Arizona.

In Chandler, d’Vine Gourmet (www.dvinegourmet.com) features an assortment of local foods, wines, snacks, and more.

Art/Architecture-Inspired

Up on a hill in northeast Scottsdale sits Taliesin West (www. franklloydwright.org), architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s (1867-1959)

winter home, studio, and school. The now-National Historic Landmark not only offers a peek into Wright’s life via tours, but a store—the Frank Lloyd Wright Store—which showcases merchandise inspired by Wright and his designs. Browse through books, home decor, apparel, art, and accessories.

Meanwhile, Cosanti (www.cosanti.com) in Paradise Valley is the foundry and studio of another famous architect—Paolo Soleri (1919-2013). This locale remains a working windbell foundry, gallery, and shop, with the famous one-of-a-kind Cosanti Originals windbells still being handcrafted on-site.

General

For stores that have a large variety of options—from souvenir cacti to T-shirts, food items, art, and so much more—there are several destinations to browse for your perfect treasure.

Kactus Jock (www.kactusjock.com) has three locations in Old Town Scottsdale and offers just about everything you can think of. Scorpion’s Sting Cajun Hot Sauce? Check. A cactus tote bag? Check. An Arizona T-shirt? Check. Southwestern metal art? Yes, that too. Every year before the official first Major League Baseball (MLB) game, the Cactus League’s MLB teams descend upon the Valley for Spring Training. Fifteen teams from Arizona’s Cactus League play throughout 10 stadiums across the Valley. This year, the games kicked off on Feb. 24, and run daily through March 28.
