Valley of the Sun
Northern Arizona
Southern Arizona
The fifth-largest metro area, Greater Phoenix encompasses more than 20 cities and towns, including Scottsdale, Phoenix (which is the capital of the state), Cave Creek, Carefree, Paradise Valley, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale. Its nickname is the Valley of the Sun, bestowed in recognition of the average 300 days of sunshine the Valley—so called because the area lies in the Salt River Valley—enjoys each year. Metro Phoenix is known for its high-end spas, golf courses, restaurants, and of course, cacti and scenic views.
Northern Arizona includes cities such as Sedona, Flagstaff, Payson, Pinetop, and Williams. The area features the famous red rocks of Sedona, several mountain ranges—including the San Francisco Peaks—and the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in North America. Of course, it’s also the location of the famous Grand Canyon, as well as Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, the Painted Desert, Slide Rock State Park, Antelope Canyon, and Meteor Crater. Due to its elevation, Northern Arizona experiences more seasonal weather than the Valley of the Sun, often including heavy snow. Skiing is a popular pastime.
There’s a lot of history to explore in Southern Arizona, from ancient ruins to abandoned mines to locales made famous during the Wild West days. Tucson is the region’s largest city, and is today filled with golf courses, spas, and a popular food scene. Tombstone and Bisbee are known for their Old West vibes, while Sonoita, Elgin, and Willcox are popular locations for wineries and distilleries. The area is also home to Tubac, Yuma, and Sierra Vista. Southern Arizona, which borders Mexico, tends to have a warm, dry climate.

Before the 30 teams of Major League Baseball debut at home, they warm up in one of two places: 15 in Florida’s Grapefruit League, and 15 in Arizona’s Cactus League. Held late February through March, daily Cactus League games give a dress rehearsal for the upcoming season. Diehard fans plan vacations here to size up their teams’ prospects and avail themselves of the summery weather, lower-than-big-league prices, autograph opportunities, and intimate stadiums.

The Spa Scene
Relaxation is taken very seriously in the Valley of the Sun. Day spas and “mind-body-spirit” havens comprise a large industry—and for more than just tending cuticles and relieving sore muscles. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess not only offers the Well & Being Spa, but the new additional spa-within-a-spa Sisley-Paris Spa; The Spa at The Boulders features a meditation labyrinth; and Aji Spa at Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass offers the only authentic Native American spa menu in existence. Numerous award-winning and celebrity chefs call the Valley home, serving up their tasty culinary creations BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

For famed restaurateur and chef Mark Tarbell, it was a love of eating that ignited his passion for the industry. “I was obsessive-compulsive and fell in love with flavors—anything from mustard to dried apricots to rye bread and butter, blueberries and cream, and I would eat it nonstop until I felt like I fully understood each of them,” he says. Today, Chef Tarbell is known not only for his creations—he is owner of Tarbell’s, The Wine Store, and The Wine Bar, all in Phoenix—but for his television appearances. He was a winner on Iron Chef America, and has made multiple appearances on The Cooking Channel. Locally, he has hosted the Emmy Award-winning Plate & Pour, and hosted the Emmy Award-winning Check, Please! Arizona. “I loved it because the odds of winning were so slim and the chances of being embarrassed on national TV triggered the adrenaline junkie in me,” he says of his experience with Iron Chef America. Chef Tarbell was the only challenger to win against the Iron Chef during that entire season. Not far from Tarbell’s, nestled in the north slope of Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley, is Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa. There, find the popular celebrity chef Beau MacMillan, who is the executive chef of elements, the resort’s restaurant. VS 70

Chef MacMillan also won the Food Network’s Iron Chef America, made several appearances on The Best Thing I Ever Made and The Best Thing I Ever Ate, has been on Guy’s Grocery Games, and appeared on Beat the Chefs. He’s also hosted the Worst Cooks in America. “Being on TV has always been an exciting part of my life in food,” he says. “Sadly, it’s been more stressful because everyone wants a competition, but the irony of competing against each other is that you’re really in competition with yourself—working on your skill, and seeing how you can change and tweak here and there to be better than you were last time. I understand that the successful side of it comes from the opportunity for failure or to witness failure to achieve ratings, but to me food and cooking are the ultimate acts of giving and sharing, so I miss the old school cooking shows that brought passion and love and technique, like Great Chefs of America.” Executive Chef Rochelle Daniel at Scottsdale’s Fat Ox began cooking at age 15. The industry called to her because “I love how food brings everyone together and makes people happy,” she says. In 2017, Chef Rochelle appeared on Chopped—the same year she was inducted into the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame. “Being on the show was fun and nerve-wracking at the same time,” she says. “The people I competed against were great and we still keep in touch.” Today, Chef Rochelle splits her time between Fat Ox and Atria, her new

The owner and executive chef of Over Easy has been on several Food Network shows, including as a judge on Guy’s Grocery Games and Guy’s Ranch Kitchen; and on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives; The Best Thing I Ever Ate; and Guy’s Big Bite. “I love being able to share my passion for food on television,” he says. “We are filming the new season of Grocery Games right now, and I think that is probably my favorite of all the shows I have been lucky to be a part of, and it’s probably because of all the talented people involved, and the lifechanging experience the contestants have competing.” Guests who dine at Phoenix’s Mora Italian or Scottsdale’s The Americano may spy Chef/Owner Scott Conant. Food Network star Conant was an All-Stars winner (and a recurring judge) on Chopped, a recurring co-host on Beat Bobby Flay, the host of Best Baker in America, a judge on Tournament of Champions, and was on The Best Thing I Ever Made—to name just a few. In addition to working in the kitchen and coaching the team, he says
he loves “hanging out in the dining room, whether it’s catching up with regulars or meeting new people.” As for being on television, not only is it fun, but “it helps bring the restaurants to life a bit more. It is a perfect scenario because people see me on various shows and are excited to visit the restaurants.” Meanwhile, at Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion—the namesake restaurant of Chef/Director Christopher Gross—Chef Christopher is cooking with his team and talking with the guests in his intimate, unique locale. Not only is his list of accolades and awards extensive—from winning a James Beard Award to being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Scottsdale Culinary Hall of Fame to being the first chef in Arizona to win the Robert Mondavi Culinary Award of Excellence—but he’s also consulted for various cruise lines, served on panels with Jacques Pépin and Julia Child, authored a cookbook, and cooked alongside Julia Child on her PBS series. “Nerve-racking! She was amazing—a wealth of information!” he says of Child. Chef Christopher serves a selection of classic contemporary French food via his carefully curated tasting menu, and a menu of guest favorites. “That’s the luxury I have,” he says. “I can fill the menu with all my favorite dishes.” WHERET RAV EL ER® G UEST BOOK

Three Valley theatrical venues boast rich design histories

Much like the performances that audiences have watched on their stages, these three theatrical venues are all works of art themselves. From iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s only public building to just one of 17 theaters in North America originally designed to host vaudeville acts, learn more about the architecture and history of these storied spaces.
ASU GAMMAGE
Top: The MIM Music Theater is an acoustically superb 300-seat theater. Opposite: ASU Gammage was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A stalled Frank Lloyd Wright project led to the creation of one of the most striking theatrical venues in town. In 1957, Arizona State University (ASU) President Grady Gammage—the venue bears his name—called on Wright to create an auditorium on campus. As “luck” would have it, Wright had designed an opera house in Baghdad, Iraq, that didn’t pan out. So, he used the designs for Tempe’s Gammage. Wright worked on sketches for the last two years of his life. His aide, William Welsey Peters, ultimately brought the project to fruition. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, ASU Gammage is eight stories tall and was completed in 1964. The locale—also called the “pink wedding cake” due to its design—is the only public building in the Grand Canyon State
that was designed by Wright. The 3,017-seat performance hall features three levels of continental-style seating, with no center aisle. The outer roof is supported by 50 concrete columns that also frame the lobby. The building features two circles. One houses the promenades, lobbies, and audience hall. The other “circle” features the stage, dressing rooms, workshops, classrooms, and offices. Here, the acoustics are near legendary. The “floating” grand tier of the auditorium was constructed to ensure an even sound reaches each audience member. Considered innovative for its time, Gammage has continued to innovate. In 2015, ASU added a new sound system and increased the number of speakers from 20 to 64. A new stage floor was installed, and the building’s façade was resurfaced.
MIM MUSIC THEATER It’s beyond fitting that a museum dedicated to showcasing musical instruments would have an acoustically superior theater to match. The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) Music Theater was designed to be intimate at 300 seats. The interior of the theater is half stone—the same sandstone from WHERET RAV EL ER® G UEST BOOK

He saw k.d. lang perform “Hallelujah” at the grand opening party, and has attended numerous shows at a theater that both performers and audience members cherish. “Everyone comments on the intimacy and the sound quality of the theater, and they love it,” he says. India that’s on the exterior of the building—and half wood. “We wanted to give it a geological, textural feel, but more importantly, that’s used for the fusion of sound energy. In a music theater, you want to have a lot of detail and projections and texture. Texture breaks up and diffuses the sound energy wave so you don’t get any echoes,” says Rich Varda, the senior design advisor with RSP Architects who helped design MIM and the theater. Beyond the acoustics, the theater was also designed to blend into its desert landscape. “We certainly wanted it to be an expression of the building as a whole, but also a unique jewel,” says Varda. The stone brought the outside in, and the wood lent a warmth to the theater. “Our feeling was that it should be warm and inviting and have a soft feel to it,” Varda explains. “Let’s use the colors of

used for vaudeville acts. The exterior is Spanish Colonial Revival, and was at one time the most ornate in the city. Still, perhaps the most impressive feature is the décor of the 1,364-seat auditorium, which is designed to evoke the garden of the Spanish Colonial mission at dusk, according to the Society of Architectural Historians. The sidewalls depict mission building façades featuring red tile roofs and arched openings. Overhead, theatergoers can see white clouds projected against a blue plaster sky. White lights are meant to resemble twinkling stars. “What they wanted to do for this theater is make it the grand hall that they were seeing … to give residents of Phoenix an escape. They really wanted to be that exotic theater palace,” says Roxann Favors, Phoenix Convention Center theatrical venue administrator, of the original owners. The theater changed ownership a handful of times
and transitioned into a movie palace. By the early 1980s, the building had fallen into disrepair and was at risk of demolition. With the encouragement of the Junior League of Phoenix, the City of Phoenix purchased the building in 1984 and began a 12-year, $14 million restoration. It reopened in 1997, and great care had been taken to try to stay true to the building’s deep historical roots, while adding modern upgrades. A Wurlitzer theater organ was brought into the building, and the digital equipment is state-of-the-art. The Orpheum today is the site of live theater showings, movie screenings, podcast recordings, and graduations, and the location still impresses visitors. “The first time they step into the auditorium, they are blown away by the architecture and the detail. They want to know about the theater. Why aren’t there more of them left?” says Favors.

More than just a means of transportation, Valley Metro’s light rail takes riders on a culture experience BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

From left: The Valley Metro light rail over Tempe Town Lake, and passing by Civic Space Park. Opposite: Riders board the light rail.
Step off the Valley Metro light rail at the 50th Street/Washington station and a unique artwork curls overhead, providing shade for commuters while celebrating a unique, native plant. Titled Greasewood Lace, and created by artist Barbara Grygutis, the work celebrates the indigenous creosote bush and its healing properties. This original work is just one along Valley Metro’s light rail. Not only is the light rail a great way to get from the airport to Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, or Mesa, but riders can also hop on to quickly explore cultural destinations, including the ballet and symphony. But, perhaps the biggest surprise is the unique public art, culture, and creativity that you can experience along the way. Valley Metro’s light rail runs from 19th Avenue and Dunlap in Phoenix, through Downtown Phoenix, into Tempe, and on to Mesa. Along the way, there is a treasure trove of artwork, thanks to its Artsline© program. While Greasewood Lace uses shape to emulate movement in the wind, you can actually see the movement if you exit at Alma School/Main Street in Mesa, where Daniel Martin Diaz’s Emergence represents the Voronoi fractal at the center of saguaro cacti. It is mesmerizing on a windy day. Along Mill Avenue in Tempe, see how artist Catherine Widgery captures the feel of wind tickling mesquite trees in Shadow Play. The glass etching is always captivating, but the glow at night brings the desert to life. Water is life in the desert, and that is reflected in many art pieces. Kevin Berry celebrates the nearby Salt River and the role it played in crop irrigation in his large shade structures along Washington and Jefferson streets. Artist Laurie Lundquist honors the Hohokam canals bringing water
to the desert in the metaphorical canal at the Priest Drive/Washington stop. Be sure to look above and below for the pennies representing the drops of rain as pennies from heaven. Many visitors—as well as residents—don’t realize that Phoenix is a nectar corridor for pollination for bats, birds, bees, and moths. You see that reflected in the bright yellow metal screen at the Northern/19th Avenue stop. Many of the works are interactive. At Thomas on Central Avenue, slowly rotate Brian Goldbloom’s massive granite cylinders as you move along the walkway. You transition through time, watching the impact of water on the Southwest. The Valley is a diverse mix of cultures, which is also reflected in the artwork. Along both Jefferson and Washington streets, Victor Zaballa’s Arizona Quilts features images of locals, colorful tiles, and railings that look like Mexican paper cuts often hanging along streets during festivals. The Native and Hispanic cultures are not the only ones represented in the area. In Tempe, Dan Corson’s Carpet of Languages at Smith-Martin/ Apache Boulevard shares snippets of conversations in the more than 70 languages spoken across the Valley. Artists love whimsy, and you can find plenty of that along the route. At the McDowell Station on Central Avenue, outside Burton Barr Public Library, look for bronze books scattered throughout the station, as if they were forgotten by a passenger. At the Osborn stop, footsteps appear to be from passengers awaiting the train. The most whimsical of all is along Main Street in Mesa, where artist Hans van Meeuwen entertains with larger-than-life lamps, furniture, and pillows. WHERET RAV EL ER® G UEST BOOK

Handcrafted from Arizona clay and bronze by skilled artisans, the alluring and iconic Cosanti bell continues to captivate

The uniqueness begins with the detailed method required to make each piece. The crew of artisans produce about 40 bells a day, every one birthed in a sand mold created just for a single bell. After its job is done, the mold is broken, the sand recycled, and the process restarted from scratch for the next one. In a time when true craftsmen are rare and being replaced by factories that churn out thousands of cookie-cutter bells at a time, Cosanti is powered by a team of specialized artisans whose tenure averages eight to 10 years of dedication to the trade. If the bronze is poured a tad too quickly, the temperature of the materials is a tick off or a slightly imperfect impression causes the mold to break or leads to gaps, and the bell is discarded. Perfection is not a goal or suggestion. Here, it’s a crucial ingredient in a recipe made to stand the test of time. “It’s like ancient Greece and the potters who made these incredible pots that are around for thousands of years and are now in the Getty Museum. I take that same responsibility when I make these bells—that they are going to be around for 4,000 years,” Hardy says. The meticulous crafting is rooted in a time-honored tradition that has VS 80

When people think of the Grand Canyon State, the last word that comes to mind is “snow.” But a perennially desirable piece of art that is quintessentially Arizonan down to its literal core shares a characteristic with the unlikely weather feature. Stunning and intriguing at first glance, while boasting melodic tones that elegantly resonate from within the vessel into the atmosphere, the iconic Cosanti windbell has been handcrafted by skilled individual artisans out of native clay and bronze since 1955. The labor-of-love process and materiality yields pieces of which none are exactly the same in look, sound, and je ne sais quoi feel. Pair this with the flair of their creators, and it makes for a singular piece. In essence, every bell is an Arizona harmonic flake of snow that won’t melt and which was designed to survive for thousands of years. “Each bell is one-of-a-kind in that it has a design that’s created by one of the artisans here,” says Chris Hardy, senior specialty artisan at Cosanti, who can identify a bell’s maker by looking at it. “Everybody has their own repertoire of designs.”

changed very little over the last 66 years, since Italian-born architect, urban designer, and Cosanti founder Paolo Soleri developed it. Whether they seek one that offers an artistic pop for indoors or one that greets guests as they approach the door, or whether they crave the earthy look of ceramic or lean toward the classical lines of bronze, Cosanti bell owners choose the one that speaks to them. And, when it comes to sound, there’s no mistaking a Cosanti windbell for a mere wind chime. “You think of a bell as having a tinny little sound. But our bells are like, ‘Whoa!’ It has a distinct sound, a richness that comes from that Arizona clay and bronze,” says Kelly Bird, the director of marketing and communications for Cosanti. But the appeal goes beyond the bell itself. A visit to the Cosanti gallery and studio in Paradise Valley is just as much of a draw. Guests stroll beneath suspended bells that create canopies amidst a route of Soleri’s original architectural structures and dwellings that date back to the 1950s and early 1960s, which exude primitive, futuristic, and outer-worldly vibes. When combined with the desert’s natural beauty as the backdrop, it makes for a multi-sensory, unforgettable journey.
Artists are seen at work in the apses, large-scale concrete shells Soleri—an understudy to architect Frank Lloyd Wright—made with an earth-casting technique. They are built on a north-south orientation, Bird explains, which allows artists to work outdoors in nature 12 months of the year, as the partial dome provides shade in the summer and warmth in the winter. Get here on a weekday and witness awe-inspiring bronze pouring. It also makes for an engaging experience where visitors can truly connect with artisans and the bells, which distinguishes a Cosanti visit from other art-focused experiences. “This is something that people in their own lives crave. Everybody has become so impersonal in their work, and it’s amazing for them to come here and see a place where artisans are living and working in a unique environment,” Hardy says. And just like a snowy fingerprint in the Sonoran Desert, each Cosanti windbell is an exclusive natural beauty. “One may have a geometric design, one may be more free-formed and organized. They are not tuned to be acoustically accurate to play to the note, but they all have their own sound,” Bird says. “Each one is unique. Like a snowflake.” WHERET RAV EL ER® G UEST BOOK

that whatever I created had to be something truly one-of-a-kind… so I married the two worlds and made what I knew into something that I loved… the best of both the coffee and tea worlds. Teaspressa’s loose leaf signature tea blends contain as much caffeine as an espresso shot, but with all the health benefits associated with traditional tea blends, too.
Let’s spill the tea here… How did
How did you come up with
you get into the tea business?
the name Teaspressa?
Since I was little, I have always been fascinated by the coffee industry. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of tea even though it was one of the first beverages introduced to me by my Korean mother. I have enjoyed coffee’s more robust flavors and how it is so versatile. I knew I wanted to start a business, I knew it had to be in the coffee/ tea industry, and I also knew
After coming up with the concept, I knew I had to create a name that would instantly explain it. I remember having a giant whiteboard filled with doodles that had adjectives on what described coffee and tea, etc. Then one night, at around 3 a.m., I just woke up and had the name in my head! I got out of bed and bought the domain, claimed the Instagram,

Facebook, and Twitter pages, then went right back to bed. What sets Teaspressa apart?
Our patent! We have truly created something different [in this] hybrid product. I actually handcrafted Teaspressa’s proprietary Tea Concentration Technology, brewing process, and the production machine that uses a pressure extraction method to produce tea blends that, like espresso, can be used to make tea lattes. Not long after you launched Teaspressa, you were on Shark Tank. What was that experience like?
It was a whirlwind. Looking back, it was almost as if I just blacked out while I was in the tank. I just remember it feeling so surreal to be face-to-face with the Sharks. Previously, it was my absolute
favorite show, and something that inspired me to start something on my own! I was so excited to have the opportunity to meet with them and share my story. Although it didn’t pan out to how I pictured at the time, I am grateful everything happened the way it did and for the experience. I’m hoping to go back on to show them how much we’ve grown since! What was it like to be selected for the Tory Burch Foundation’s Business Fellows Program?
This was freaking amazing. What girl wouldn’t freak out if THE Tory Burch asked you to be a part of her fellowship?! This was a dream come true and it was the first fellowship/entrepreneur group I have been a part of. If anything, I was excited about the resources, the companionship with the other entrepreneurs, and obviously meeting Tory Burch.
