THE MEXICANO’S PIÑA GUACAMOLE
A New Dining Masterpiece
From the geniuses behind the popular local restaurants Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher, and The Sicilian Baker comes The Mexicano. This newest restaurant concept is spearheaded by celebrity chef Joey Maggiore, and his wife, Cristina, and is inspired by the flavors, colorful art, music, and culture of Mexico. The buzzy, nouveau Mexican eatery features a Mexico City-inspired design, chef-driven menu, experiential food and cocktail carts, DJs playing Latin music—and the country’s first-ever, build-your-own Michelada bar (toppings include oysters, shrimp cocktail, pickled jicama, dry chorizo, and tamarindo sticks—to name just a few!). Menu items range from the Smoking Grouper Ceviche presented in a coconut shell, to 36-inch quesadillas, to charcoal-grilled prime meats and seafood. Ready for a drink? Pair your meal with a piñata margarita or frozen margarita flights, or wait for the donkey cart with a tequila ice luge and shot glasses. 4801 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix; www.themexicanocomida.com

Arizona Taco Festival and Phoenix Pizza Festival creator David Tyda is not one to rest on his laurels. The food festival guru and icon recently opened BARCOA Agaveria, in partnership with Ryan Oberholtzer, in homage to the spirit of Mexico—especially its agave spirit and wine producers. The two sourced almost all of the locale’s design elements from Mexico in order to create an authentic atmosphere in which its guests can discover the world of heritage agave spirits. Here, find everything from a refined cocktail menu and educational tequila, mezcal, and agave spirit tastings, to iconic agave-infused offerings including the Batanga and margarita, to a menu that features lesser-known agave spirits. 829 N. 1st Ave, Phoenix; www.barcoaphx.com

WHERE NOW
If you find yourself in Downtown Scottsdale, there is plenty to see and experience, from shops to entertainment to dining options. There are also major public art installations in the area, so make sure to keep an eye out. While some works—including artist Robert Indiana’s famous stacked LOVE statue—are currently unavailable for viewing due to renovations at Scottsdale Civic Center, there are still plenty on view. At Scottsdale Waterfront, find Paolo Soleri’s Soleri Bridge and Plaza (4420 N. Scottsdale Road), which serves as a pedestrian bridge, solar calendar, and gathering place. Meanwhile, Jack Knife by artist Ed Mell (7077 E. Main St.)—an identifying landmark in Downtown Scottsdale—is modeled after Scottsdale’s official city seal, and features a rider astride a bucking horse. Nearby, standing watch at 26 feet high, is a painted steel jackrabbit sculpture by John Randall Nelson called One-Eyed Jack (7042 E. Indian School Road), symbolizing the eclectic, artistic heritage of the area, and the promise of a bright future. And, on the corner of Scottsdale and Camelback roads, find The Doors and Sound Passage, two artworks in one. From the outside, there are three massive doors leaning against each other, a work titled The Doors by artist Donald Lipski. Step inside for Sound Passage by artist Jim Green, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a kaleidoscope.

uzz. All restaurants want it, and the best way to go about getting it is to create a dish so extraordinary that it transforms diners to devotees. Here are some of the Valley’s buzziest dishes, each of which helped bring its restaurant into the culinary consciousness of customers far and wide.
THE ORIGINAL CHIMICHANGA AT MACAYO’S Legend has it the dish—the first chimichanga on record, in fact—was created by accident in 1946 when the restaurant’s founder accidentally dropped a burrito into the hot deep fryer. Recognizing this mistake as something more like destiny, he topped this deep-fried burrito with cheese, relleno sauce, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Still available on the menu in many forms all these years later, we are especially fond of the Chimi de Macayo with rice, beans, and guacamole. Multiple Valley locations; www.maycos.com
BRUSCHETTA BOARD AT POSTINO This board—which was introduced in 2001 when the first-ever Postino opened in Arcadia—launched at least a dozen “bottle and board” nights and creative shareable offerings via boards across Arizona. But, this was the first kid on the block, a smattering of carb-laden goodness featuring four pieces of thick bread topped with the guests’ choice of five to 10 toppings, ranging from traditional tomato, mozzarella, and basil to warm artichoke spread to prosciutto with mascarpone. Multiple Valley locations; www.postinowinecafe.com
BUTTERMILK BUNS AT MOWRY & COTTON
THE ORIGINAL CHOPPED SALAD AT CITIZEN PUBLIC HOUSE AND THE GLADLY While working at the now-shuttered Cowboy Ciao, chef Bernie Kantak artfully spooned chopped arugula, smoked salmon, pearl couscous, pepitas, asiago cheese, dried sweet corn, marinated Roma tomatoes, and buttermilk herb dressing onto a plate. As visually appealing as it was addictively appetizing, the dish soon became Arizona’s unofficial state salad. When Kantak moved on to open Citizen Public House and The Gladly, he brought his famed salad with him, to constant continued acclaim. CRUNCHY TACOS AT CRUJIENTE TACOS The modern taqueria’s namesake tacos (crujiente actually translates to crunchy in English) are inspired by Executive Chef Rich Hinojosa’s upbringing in south Texas, where crunchy tacos are a staple. Prepared with fried-to-order, hard-shell corn tortillas and heaped with beef, green chile pork, birria-style lamb, or even potato for vegetarians, each taco is packed with slow-cooked fillings, fresh vegetables, and house-made salsas. 3961 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix; www.crutacos.com
THE HOT CHICK AT THE HOT CHICK Yes, the entire restaurant is named for one sandwich. And yes, it is that good. A take on the popular Southern dish, the hot chick boasts an ultra-juicy chicken breast fried and spiced to perfection before being paired with cooling coleslaw and equal parts

STEAK BOARDS AT STK STEAKHOUSE Out to make its Linz’-sourced meat stand out, STK Steakhouse innovated a board concept for its best cuts. The customizable and coveted must on any visit includes any cut of meat, including the filet, New York strip, dry-aged Delmonico, cowgirl ribeye, porterhouse, or even the tomahawk, as well as a steak a topping of choice (think king crab Oscar, shrimp, or peppercorn crust), and multiple sides to go along with it. 7134 E. BUTTERMILK BUNS AT MOWRY & COTTON When Mowry & Cotton opened at The Phoenician, those in charge sought an approachable dish that would showcase the locale’s massive hearth oven. Enter Executive Sous Chef Rebecca Tillman’s secret family recipe for buttermilk buns. Using a recipe from memory that was passed down by her grandmother, Tillman expertly crafted the most appealing of appetizers, pairing them with citrus sea salt butter, seasonal jam, and duck fat butter for dunking. Spots to Wine Down
ooking for a great place to sniff, swirl, and sip? Here are six sensational spots to wine down with your mates, or on a date. ALISON BAILIN BATZ 1 POSTINO
One of the area's most popular wine bars, Postino has built a loyal following since opening its first location in 2001, thanks to its mid-century adaptive reuse design, quirky real estate selection, and happy hour where all wines are just $5 until 5 p.m. daily. Expect 30-plus wines available by the glass at each of its eight locations, as well as a bevy of by-the-bottle, and there is even a wine club called “Wine Cult” for the brand’s biggest fans. www.postinowinecafe.com
48
2 THE WINE BAR
Acclaimed chef and wine educator Mark Tarbell makes wine-ing down in Central Phoenix a little sexier at The Wine Store, which is conveniently next door to his awardwinning Tarbell’s restaurant. Tarbell personally sources and stocks the premium wine himself, and even offers a wine club, but perhaps the coolest element of The Wine Store is The Wine Bar. Tucked into the back of the store, the cozy, wooded space offers tapas-style plates and thoughtful wine pairings, as well as wines by the glass and bottle. www.tarbellswinestore.com

3 TIMO WINE BAR
The magic of Timo Wine Bar lies in its patio, which is shrouded with big, lush trees covered with twinkle lights that glow as if in a fairyland… with wine. In the center of the space is a grand fire pit with cushioned oversized seating. The wine menu is immense, and the food to pair with it is cooked in a custom wood-fired oven. It is the perfect spot for a bruschetta or charcuterie board and wine, and offers deals several nights of the week on its wood oven pizzas, small bites, and bottles. www.timocentral.com
4 WINE GIRL SCOTTSDALE
Open since May 2020, this Bohoinspired, sustainable wine bar is meant to make its guests feel like they are on vacation. The dreamy décor and lush furniture lend themselves as much to selfies as to sipping. There are 12 wines on tap, as well as dozens of bottles, including an extensive reserve list. There are also four beers on tap
at any given time. www.winegirlscottsdale.com
5 SCAPEGOAT BEER AND WINE
Known for its dog-friendly patio, Scapegoat seeks to showcase new beers and wines from regions around the world. As such, the wine list changes every quarter, and the beers almost daily. There are always 16 beers on tap and 17 wines by the glass, as well as tempting tapas to pair with each. Expect table games, as well as curated and themed playlists from the staff and regulars. www.scapegoatbar.com
6 LDV WINERY TASTING ROOM
The LDV Winery Tasting Room brings a piece of the Southern Arizona vineyard to the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, right along the Waterfront. Guests can taste wines for a minimal fee, or enjoy a glass or bottle of LDV wine on the patio. The tasting room also offers little bites that are perfectly paired to complement LDV wines. www.ldvwinery.com
