Global-Inspired Food Last month, the popular Café Allegro at the Musical Instrument Museum reopened, with its offerings once again drawing visitors from near and far. Executive Chef James Moran introduced a new menu of seasonal dishes and drinks that celebrate culinary influences from around the globe—though often prepared with local flavors and ingredients. Recent selections have included the Wild Mushroom Bisque with truffle oil and chives, and an Autumn Chopped Salad with apple, bacon, and pepitas tossed in an apple cider vinaigrette. Grill items such as a Gochujang Burger reflected the museum’s global nature. There has also been Fish & Chips, and an Italian Meat Stromboli. The menu, which is offered for lunch only, features a variety of salads, soups, entrées, and grill items, and selections rotate weekly and seasonally. After satisfying your hunger, explore the museum’s collection of more than 8,000 instruments from more than 200 world countries. 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix; www.mim.org

t’s a festive and fun time in the Valley of the Sun, where palm trees and cacti sparkle with holiday lights, and cheer is on the menu. It’s easy to get
into the happy spirit and glow of the season.
LIGHT DISPLAYS
At the Phoenix Zoo (www.phoenixzoo.org), experience the magic of millions of twinkling lights, dazzling animal sculptures, and Music-in-Motion Light Shows on the lake at ZooLights. This year’s festivities include zoo walk-through nights, as well as “cruise the zoo” nights, where cars can drive through the destination along a set path. Both World of Illumination and Holiday Lights at Salt River Fields are also drive-through events. World of Illumination (www.worldofillumination.com) has two Valley locations—in
Glendale, the exhibit theme is Candy Rush, while Tempe features Reindeer Road. At both locations, music (which you can hear through your car radio) is synced to millions of lights. At Holiday Lights at Salt River Fields (www.saltriverfields.com), drive through a 1.2-mile light show experience. Ride a different kind of vehicle to view the Holiday Lights at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park (www.therailroadpark.com)— the working Paradise & Pacific Railroad train that circles the park. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess also puts on a big light display with its Christmas at the Princess (www.scottsdaleprincess. com), which features more than six million LED lights, rides on the Princess Express through a light-lit lagoon, and more. Meanwhile, Desert Botanical Garden (www.dbg.org) showcases its annual Las Noches de las Luminarias, where 8,000 flickering luminarias and twinkling lights guide visitors through live holiday music performances spanning several genres and styles.

MARCH 2020
O
n New Year’s Eve, all eyes will be on the ball drop in Times Square. But come New Year’s Day, it is all about football—especially in the Valley of the Sun, host of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl. "New Year's Day is synonymous with elite college football, and the Fiesta Bowl has been a key part of the nation’s Jan. 1 slate of games since 1982. There's no better way to ring in 2022 than to enjoy the pageantry of Bowl Season with friends and family," says Fiesta Bowl Executive Director Mike Nealy.
THE FIESTA BOWL’S HISTORY
It was late in 1968 when a group headed by advertising executive Glenn Hawkins, newspaper public relations director Bill Shover, hotelier Jack Stewart, lawyer Don Meyers, media executive Karl Eller, stockbroker Jim Meyer, Coca-Cola general manager George Taylor, banker George Isbell, and accountant Don Dupont began their mission to bring a college bowl game to Arizona. The group was eventually able to pitch the game to the NCAA, calling it “the state’s largest and most important community effort in history.” After several presentations to the NCAA, the persistence paid off in April 1971, when the NCAA Council approved a bowl game in Arizona. And the Fiesta Bowl was born. Since that day, the Fiesta Bowl has staged seven national championship games, featured a who's who of college powers, and hosted 13 Heisman Trophy winners—all while raising funds to support community programs across Arizona.

THE FIESTA BOWL’S IMPACT
“The Fiesta Bowl Organization has built a track record of creating innovative experiences—like the Caesars Sportsbook Fan Lounge— as well as championing charitable causes that positively impact our community,” says Nealy. “In fact, every ticket purchased for the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl helps support Fiesta Bowl Charities, which has supported hundreds of Arizona nonprofits and thousands of Arizona’s teachers over the last 10 years.” A sampling of the impact: Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers: In what has become an annual tradition to honor, support, and celebrate Arizona’s teachers, this program has granted $4.7 million to more than 1,200 Arizona teachers, impacting over 500,000 children across the state since its inception. Fiesta Bowl Charitable Giving Program: In 2021 alone, Fiesta Bowl Charities selected 51 Arizona nonprofits to receive grants, impacting more than 575,000 individuals in the process. Fiesta Bowl Playground Builds Program: In partnership with KABOOM!, the Fiesta Bowl builds two local playgrounds a year, with a goal of providing a safe space for kids throughout the entire state of Arizona. Arizona Milk Producers Fiesta Bowl Youth Football Clinic: Kids ages 7-14 have the opportunity to participate in this free, non-contact clinic annually to learn fundamentals while developing confidence, a strong work ethic, and motivation that will help them succeed on and off the field. Pandemic Relief: Amid COVID-19, Fiesta Bowl Charities donated 50,000-plus pieces of personal protective equipment, provided nearly 3.75 million meals to those in need, supported more than 688,000 youth through grant programs, and impacted nearly 50 local nonprofits via time and financial contributions.
23
NEW IN 2022
Fans will be able to experience the excitement of college football Bowl Season in a new, high-energy, engaging, and social atmosphere with the introduction of the Caesars Sportsbook Fan Lounge at the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl. This space is highly desired, with only 800 tickets available, and will be a combination of beer garden, football game, and socializing. The concept provides hours-long entertainment with food, drink, mingling, and cheering on the college football action on the field. The space, which still has tickets available starting at just $75, overlooks the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl field with an incredible vantage point and a close birds-eye view that is meant to make guests feel like they're on top of the field. “Of course, it wouldn't be college football without a proper tailgate party, as well,” says Nealy, noting there will also be a Caesars Sportsbook PlayStation Fiesta Bowl Fan Fest Pregame Party at State Farm Stadium starting at 7:30 a.m. on game day, where fans of all ages can experience some of the greatest pregame traditions like pep rallies and performances by
marching bands, as well as interactive games, and copious food and drink booths.
DESERT FINANCIAL FIESTA BOWL PARADE
The Fiesta Bowl also birthed a second tradition beyond the game itself with the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by Lerner & Rowe. This year’s Parade will take place on Sat., Dec. 18, down a two-mile route in Central Phoenix. The theme of the parade, which honors the organization’s 50th Anniversary, is “Gold Standard: A Commitment to CommUNITY." Alice Cooper and the nine Fiesta Bowl Founders will share the honor of being the parade’s grand marshals. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was chosen, as were the founders, because his actions align with the organization's commitment to driving economic growth, championing charitable causes, and executing innovative experiences. The event is free and fans interested in elevating their experience can purchase reserved seating options at the broadcast zone.

Distinctive Drinks
T
here are those who prefer a vodka soda at happy hour, and certainly those who prefer a mug of beer or glass of wine. And then there are the more daring drinkers—those who are willing to try anything once in the name of flavor. These more unique-to-drink cocktails are for them—and perhaps their friends willing to test the adventurous waters. ALISON BAILIN BATZ 1 GRAND NACIONAL
Big and complex with a savory spice, this one stars Becherovka. It may sound intimidating, but it is actually an exotic and ultra-herbal bitters that is most often enjoyed as a digestif. The Becherovka is combined with mezcal that has been infused with black currants, followed by passion fruit purée, and Big Marble ginger beer. $14 at www.riseuptownhotel.com

at Wrigley Mansion developed this cocktail to honor afternoon tea aficionado Ada Wrigley, for whom Wrigley Gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. initially built the mansion for as a gift 100 years ago. It features yuzu-infused Effen Vodka, Aperol Apertivo, Cointreau, passion fruit syrup, and lemon juice. It gets its tea-like look as much from an intricate clarification process as the fine china into which it is poured. $28 at www.wrigleymansion.com

3 THE AFTER SMOKE
Taking the term “smoke ’em if you got ’em” literally, this whiskeybased cocktail at Orange Sky starts with Bulleit Rye, which is known for its layered spice notes. It is combined with orange and cherry bitters, and garnished with an expressed orange peel before being poured into a rocks glass and put into a glass smoking device. Once tableside, the glass is removed from the device, providing an actual smoke show. $18 at www.talkingstickresort.com
4 BIG CITY NIGHTS
This refreshingly herbal variation on a classic European-style sour combines blackberry-infused gin with fresh lemon, dry vermouth, and Suze liqueur, which is a French aperitif made with a mountain shrub known for its medicinal qualities, as well as simple syrup made with Herbes de Provence, and cinnamon. Oh, and then there is the presentation, a truly grand frothy egg with a circle of edible rice paper that has been imprinted with a collage featuring Phoenix
icons both past and present. $15 at www.littleritualsbar.com
5 CLOUD 9
This sky blue beauty is meant to transport one to the vibrant shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It features Platinum Vodka and Giffard Blue Curacao, which has bitter and sweet citrus notes, as well as an electric blue hue, plus a hint of Coco Reàl Coconut purèe, and a squeeze of lime. It is strained into a coupe glass before being finished with toasted coconut sugar. $12 at www.evoscottsdale.com
6 BEBIDA VERDE
Though often relegated as a garnish or ingredient in guacamole, cilantro takes center stage here, serving as a starring ingredient along with mezcal in this smoky, earthy cocktail. The bold flavors are balanced here with citrus, and then spiced up thanks to potent chile pepper dust, which is rimmed along the glass. $12 at www.chanticophx.com
