GRAND CANYON RAILWAY

Full Steam Ahead

The historic and scenic train ride from Williams, Arizona on the Grand Canyon Railway—which has been running since 1901—is always a unique experience. There are daily departures and a scenic 65 mile ride highlighting everything from high desert to prairie to pine (as well as some entertaining musicians and the antics of cowboy characters). Beginning this month, passengers have the option to ride the more modern diesel engine trains, or, every first Saturday through October, choose a ride pulled by one of the Railway’s majestic two steam engines. The steam engine will pull the 9:30 a.m. passenger train to the Historic Village inside Grand Canyon National Park. Steam engine #4960 is a massive engineering marvel and runs on recycled vegetable oil and snow melt (water). Built in 1923 and weighing in at 310 tons, the famous “green steam machine” and the Railway carries hundreds of thousands of people a year and keeps about 70,000 automobiles off the roads leading into the national park. 233 N. oday’s Scottsdale is modern, with one of the largest shopping malls in the country drawing patrons to its stores that range from H&M to Louis Vuitton—and even a Tesla dealership. Luxe restaurants such as Nobu and Ocean 44 call the city home, and Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis is opening two restaurants. Luxury cars are common sights, and golf courses abound. Still, Scottsdale’s roots, which date back more than 130 years, were as a Western city, and its slogan remains, “The West’s Most Western Town.” You can find nods to its history throughout the city, including the Jack Knife by Ed Mel statue in Old Town Scottsdale, which is modeled after Scottsdale’s official city seal—a rider astride a bucking horse. Each year, Scottsdale pays homage to its distinctive heritage, history, cultures, and experiences via a Western Week celebration. This year’s event, held from April 10-18, will look a little different than in years past, but it still serves as a way to explore all that Scottsdale once was, and how it has evolved to the present day. Here, some highlights. For more information, visit www. scottsdalewesternweek.com.

ardens may not be what you first think of when you picture Arizona. Desert vistas? Yes. Palm trees? Yes, again. But though

these public gardens may not be filled with the typical lush landscapes bursting with flowers that you may picture when you hear the word “garden,” these locales each offer a way to explore Arizona’s unique landscape and flora, and to find perfect moments of serenity.

DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN In Phoenix, set amongst the red rocks of Papago Buttes on 55 acres, is Desert Botanical Garden, accredited by the American

Association of Museums; voted a Phoenix Point of Pride; and, in 2005, named one of Arizona’s Treasures. Desert Botanical Garden showcases more than 50,000 cacti, trees, and flowers from around the world, including 485 species that are rare and endangered. Stroll through while exploring towering cacti, alluring succulents, and stunning wildflowers. There are five themed trails—the Desert Discovery Loop Trail, which showcases desert plants from around the world; the Plans & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop Trail, which explores the use of desert plants for nourishment, cultural activities, and tools; the Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail, which illustrates the relationship between desert plants and animals; the Center for Desert Living Loop Trail, where ideas and strategies for sustainable ways to live with nature are displayed; and the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail, where desert wildflowers are showcased.

The Garden also often hosts both exhibits and events. Currently on exhibit is Natasha Lisitsa and Daniel Schultz of Waterlily Pond Studio’s Wind, Water, Earth, a series of large-scale, living sculptures (the third part of the series, Earth, is on view this month). Also on-site are Gertrude’s and the Patio Cafe restaurants. 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix; 480.941.1225; www.dbg.org

In the heart of Phoenix lies an unexpected treasure—a Japanese garden. Named RoHoEn, it is a joint project between the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan. The idea for the 3.5-acre garden was proposed in 1987 as a way to solidify the bonds of friendship between the two countries, as well as the two cities. Today, the destination—another Phoenix Point of Pride— features a stroll garden, tea garden, a stone garden, and a courtyard garden. The stroll path is a loop that takes visitors through four different regions, hidden in a “hide and reveal” aspect that is typical of Japanese gardens. Benches are strategically located throughout the garden, offering places to sit and meditate, contemplate, or read. There are also stone footbridges; lanterns; a koi pond; streams; a waterfall; and more than 50 varieties of plants, including bamboo. All of the decorative features throughout the Garden are gifts

from the City of Himeji and its citizens. Although Japanese Friendship Garden typically offers monthly authentic tea ceremonies in its tea house, those are currently on hold due to COVID. It is still offering Walk-In Tours, and events and classes. 1125 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix; 602.274.8700; www.japanesefriendshipgarden.org

Kartchner Caverns has many unique characteristics, including the world’s most extensive formation of brushite moonmilk on record, and the tallest column in Arizona. There are many unusual cave formations scattered throughout the site, such as rimstone dams, shields, and totems.

IN

1978, cavers Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts found what is today called Kartchner Caverns, located in Benson. They explored the caverns for four years before alerting the owners of the

land, James and Lois Kartchner. In 1988, the cave’s purchase was approved as an Arizona State Park. Today, visitors can explore the cave—which has been kept in near-pristine condition—via tours (reservations required), and view one of the world’s longest soda straw stalactites, the tallest and most massive column in Arizona, and more. https://azstateparks.com/kartchner/ 26
