WINE TIME Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants is more than just a go-to for top-notch food. It’s a fusion of modern casual restaurant, Napa-style tasting room, and artisanal retail market. The destination recently opened its first Arizona location in Scottsdale at The Promenade (a Chandler location is set to open soon, as well). The menu—which offers an extensive list of from-scratch, American-fusion options—pairs food items with wines, labeled by bin number, as suggested by the winemaker. Try entrées such as the Red Wine Braised Short Ribs, paired with wine from Bin 82; Pistachio-Crusted Grouper, paired with wine from Bin 74; and Dana’s ParmesanCrusted Chicken, paired with wine from Bin 79. For a different experience, head to the tasting room for a guided wine tasting. Meanwhile, the artisan market offers a selection of wine-related items—think decanters and wine accessories—gourmet foods, and seasonal gifts. Currently, reservations for dining and

Back to the Future Visitors have yet another reason to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West—the UNESCO World Heritage Site now features even more nods to the past, thanks to a number of reinterpretation and restoration projects recently completed by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The projects were designed to resurrect the essence the site had when it served as the prolific architect’s winter laboratory in the late 1950s. Since Taliesin West continued to be used as a living space after Wright’s passing, many changes to everything from the furniture to the layout occurred over the years. Now, the Foundation’s Preservations and Collections researched the key Historic Core—

including Wright’s Office, the Garden Room, Living Quarters, Dining Cove, and Sunset Terrace—to determine how they could be reinterpreted to provide an even richer experience. Some of the changes thus far include the restoration of a historic and beloved Chinese screen in the Dining Cove; a reconstructed, portable canvas shade structure on the Sunset Terrace; collections of cherished Native American and Asian art that were rearranged about the spaces and on new tables in the Garden Room and Dining Cove; and more. Additional projects are planned for the future. 12345 N. Taliesin Drive, Scottsdale; 888.516.0811; www.franklloydwright.org

t’s the fifth oldest tournament on the PGA TOUR—first played in 1932—and for years has been the TOUR’s most popular stop for fans. The 16th hole is legendary, and in the last few years, the crowds have soared to include more than 700,000 attendees per week.

While 2021 will look different, it’s still #ThePeoplesOpen, and with Covid-19-safe protocols in place, the game swings on in Scottsdale from Feb. 1-7 at the TPC Scottsdale. The expansive, 192-acre TPC Scottsdale Stadium golf course— designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf in 1986 and redesigned by Weiskopf in 2014—allows for ample outdoor social distancing,

and this year’s tickets are limited in number. Though many of the hospitality venues weren’t constructed for 2021, there are still plenty of packages and single-day ticket opportunities. “‘The People’s Open’ just would not be the same without our fans, so it is our every intention to have fans at the Waste Management Phoenix Open during the week of Feb. 1,” says Scott Jenkins, tournament chairman, 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open. “In cooperation with Waste Management and our other partners, we are pivoting and planning an event that may have less fans and venues, but will still be a world-class event that will make our community proud and support our charity partners.” Jenkins, the PGA TOUR, and Open officials are committed to providing as safe an experience as possible. There will be a contactless ticket admissions process, and every attendee will be subject to a thermal screening and health questionnaire upon arrival. Masks will be required at all times (except when eating or drinking), and social distancing guidelines will be in effect (the closest guests may see is the “crowd” of faces at the 16th hole—a fundraiser where a fan’s face was added to a banner after a tax-deductible donation was made to the Thunderbirds Charities). Additionally, consumption of food or beverages will not be allowed in the first two rows of any bleacher or within 10 feet of the ropeline. Those hoping for an autograph will need to pass this year—no photographs, handshakes, or fist bumps will be permitted. The event kicks off as a closed event, with practice rounds on Feb. 1 and 2. It opens to fans on Feb. 3, and includes the Annexus Pro-Am in the morning, with the Phoenix Suns Charities Shot at Glory held on the 16th hole in the afternoon. Feb. 4 sees the first round, Feb. 5 the second, Feb. 6 the third, and Feb. 7 the fourth. Feb. 6 is also All Day Green Out, where everyone is encouraged to wear green to support the green/eco-sensitive efforts of the tournament. Speaking of green... the 2021 purse? It’s $7,300,000—with the winner taking home a cool $1,314,000. Other winners of the event are the charities for which the host Thunderbirds Charities raises money. n addition to Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 also marks the 109th anniversary of Arizona’s statehood. What better time than during the Grand Canyon State’s

birthday month to seek out and sample dishes that proudly incorporate local ingredients?

BREAD For almost 10 years, Noble Bread has been baking some of the most beloved loaves in the Valley. Each perfectly crafted loaf takes approximately 36 hours to make—all using GMO-free flour and an organic leaven starter. There are currently more than 30 types of Noble Bread on the market, with everything from cranberries and walnuts to flaxseeds and honey inside. Some of the most inspired uses of the bread can be found at local restaurants that include The Macintosh, OEB Breakfast Co., Chula Seafood, The Coronado PHX, The Gladly, Citizen Public House, Twisted Grove Parlor + Bar, and Miracle Mile Deli. Beyond Noble, Mediterra Bakehouse in Coolidge and its stone hearth—known for making dark crust—also makes the grade when it

comes to bread, most with caramelized, nutty notes. Find it at Phoenix City Grille, Chelsea’s Kitchen and Buck & Rider.

PRODUCE Don’t be deceived by the ample desert, because Arizona is one of the best places to grow a number of fruits and vegetables. There are hundreds of working farms, many selling their bounty to local eateries near and far. For example, for four generations, the Duncan family has sustainably farmed over 150 types of fruits and vegetables at its Duncan’s Trading Company in West Phoenix, including 18 varieties of squash, 18 varieties of lettuces, 15 varieties of tomatoes, eight varieties of melons, and six varieties of beets of all colors. Visit Binkley’s Restaurant, Vincent’s on Camelback, Zuzu at Hotel Valley Ho, Elements at Sanctuary Resort, or Hearth ’61 at Mountain Shadows for seasonal produce offered daily. Another example: McClendon’s Select farm in West Phoenix, which boasts more than 100 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables, along with dates, honey, and bee pollen. Their fruits and vegetables are also regularly used in dishes at over 80 restaurants across Arizona.

GRAPES

EGGS Since 1944, Hickman’s Family Farms has grown from an operation of just a few hens to the largest egg producer in the Southwest. Locally owned by the Hickman family since its initial founding in Glendale, today the farm has over four million hens living cage-free on property, and it is a member of the American Humane Certified™ program, which ensures the birds are raised humanely while being protected from predators. They are also the first egg producer nationwide to adopt polyethylene terephthalate packaging, which is a non-toxic, recyclable material. A favorite of chefs across the Valley, eggs from Hickman’s are always on the menu at Vecina, Camelback Inn Resort and Spa, U.S. Egg, Ironwood American Kitchen at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher, The Sicilian Baker, Ocotillo, and many more. In fact, as twisted takes on deviled eggs continue to be all the rage in the Valley, there are several hotspots that dream up themed eggs several times a week, notably Merc Bar and Beckett’s Table, which has riffed on the

CLOCKWISE TOP LEFT: COURTESY MEDITERRA BAKEHOUSE; COURTESY ZUZU AT HOTEL VALLEY HO; COURTESY THE SICILIAN BAKER

Again, don’t let the desert fool you. From the Verde Valley in Northern Arizona to Cochise County in Southern Arizona, grape varietals including Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Tempranillo, Syrah, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sangiovese, and many more are growing in record numbers, most being used to create award-winning wine. In fact, Javelina Leap Winery in Page Springs has not only taken home Best in Class and gold medals at the local Winegrowers Awards year after year, but earned medals at the world-renowned San Francisco Wine Competition as well. Similarly, Willcox’s Carlson Creek Vineyards received both gold and silver medals at the 2019 World Wine Championships, and Page Springs Cellars is crafting wine that has earned 90 points or more from Wine Spectator. Due to their popularity, most locally owned restaurants in Phoenix carry at least one local wine, and both Total Wine and AJ’s Fine Foods have full displays of local bottles. In addition, Scottsdale has its own “urban wine trail,” where five tasting rooms—Aridus Wine Company, Carlson Creek Tasting Room, LDV Winery Tasting Room, Merkin Vineyards, and Salvatore Vineyards Tasting Room—are just steps apart,

offering their own wines, and often others from Arizona to showcase the industry to the world at large.

Crow’s Dairy, located in West Phoenix, is a fifth-generation family dairy that was once best-known for its cow milk. But in 2008, they made the move to start raising Nubian dairy goats. Though they started with just 25, the results were stunning, and as such, today they raise and regularly milk over 300 goats in order to fulfil the hundreds of orders for their goat-based milk and cheese products statewide. Similarly, family-owned and -operated and located in West Phoenix is Danzeisen Dairy, where each of the heifers is kept happy thanks to monthly visits from a cow nutritionist who monitors the ladies’ diets and feed quality. The resulting hormone-free products range from whole, skim, and reduced-fat milks, as well as creamer and naturally flavored milks—including one that tastes like a Creamsicle. All items come in glass bottles to preserve freshness. There is also a line of juices—currently lemon, orange, and strawberry lemon—made using Purely Sedona Artesian Spring Water. You can find products from one or both dairies in several

dishes all over town, including at The Larder + The Delta, Southern Rail, Maple & Ash, Scramble, Cielo at ADERO Scottsdale, LON’s at the Hermosa Inn, and Luna Gelateria.

OLIVE OIL Deep in the Southeast Valley is Queen Creek Olive Mill, Arizona’s only working olive farm and mill. Located on a whopping 100-acre farm with more than 7,000 olive trees, Queen Creek Olive Mill produces dozens of olive oils, balsamic vinegars, tapenades, sauces and—of course—olives. They’ve also gotten into the health and beauty industry with its Olivespa studio onsite, which makes all-natural, plant-based skin care products. Certainly visiting the mill is a treat, but it is possible to taste many of its products elsewhere in town, including in a number of dishes at Dust Cutter, Fat Ox, The Mission, Zuzu at Hotel Valley Ho, Gertrude’s, and Crujiente Tacos, which notably has a seasonal gazpacho that—among other items—is elevated to the next level thanks to a perfect, hefty drizzle of its oil. There is also an Oils & Olives by Queen Creek Olive Mill retail shop located at Kierland Commons in Scottsdale, with hundreds of products from which to choose.

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Hickman’s eggs are used in dishes at The Sicilian Butcher, Carlson Creek is an Arizona wine, wine tastings of Arizona wines are offered at Javelina Leap Winery. (Opposite page, clockwise from left) Mediterra Bakehouse supplies bread to many local restaurants, Zuzu uses locally grown produce in its dishes, and The Sicilian Baker uses Hickman’s eggs in its cannoli dough.

ARTFULLY 1 ENTICING A not-to-miss when in the Valley? A look at some of the major public art installations around town. Here, some of our favorites and where to find them

HER SECRET IS PATIENCE

This unique piece is made of flexible polyester netting suspended 38 feet above the ground at Civic Space Park. Artist Janet Echelman was inspired by Arizona’s distinctive monsoon cloud formations, saguaro flowers, and saguaro boots (which form inside a cactus). The sculpture was designed to billow and ripple in the wind, reflecting the iridescent beauty of Southwestern light. 424 N. CENTRAL AVE., PHOENIX

2

WATERWORKS AT ARIZONA FALLS

At 58th Street and Indian School Road in Phoenix, a restored hydroelectric plant on the Arizona Canal is now a gathering spot. Created by artists Mags Harries and Lajos Heder, the design exposed the gears and floors of the site’s former hydroelectric plant generator room, and framed an outdoor “room” with coolness and the sound of water by diverting small flows of canal water to create a pair of waterfalls. There’s also a footbridge and viewing platform.

4

SOLERI BRIDGE AND PLAZA

Renowned artist and architect Paolo Soleri created this unique artwork along the Scottsdale Waterfront. The piece also serves as a pedestrian bridge, solar calendar, and gathering place. The bridge, which is anchored by two 64-foot pylons with a 6-inch gap between them, is situated at a true north axis, allowing it to mark solar events produced by the sun’s shadow. 4420 N. ONE-EYED JACK

Rising 26 feet high, this painted steel jackrabbit sculpture by John Randall Nelson stands watch on the corner of Marshall Way and Indian School Road, welcoming those who pass by. The sculpture is meant to be a reminder of Marshall Way’s history, as well as a nod to its future, as rabbits have been symbols of rebirth and cleverness. Here, it symbolizes the eclectic, artistic heritage of the area, and the promise of a bright future. 7042 E. INDIAN SCHOOL ROAD, SCOTTSDALE

6

WATER MARK

This eye-catching series of five aluminum equine gargoyles created by Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan offers a unique feature— during flooding events, water pours from the horses’ mouths. THE DOORS AND SOUND PASSAGE

This installation is two artworks in one. From the outside, there are three massive doors leaning against each other. Titled The Doors and created by Donald Lipski, it is a sculpture of South American hardwood, mirrorpolished stainless steel, LEDs, and steel rivets and strapping. Step inside and you’ll feel like you stepped into a kaleidoscope, with mirrors, multiple reflections, and light reflected from the sky. The experience is enhanced with Sound Passage by Jim Green, which offers a variety of unique sounds.

8

JACK KNIFE

An identifying landmark in Downtown Scottsdale, Jack Knife was the first large-scale sculpture created by premier Arizona artist Ed Mell. Modeled after Scottsdale’s official city seal—a rider astride a bucking horse—the bronze sculpture rises more than 8 feet high on its base.

9

COPPER FALLS

Created by artist Robert “Bob” Adams, this artwork along the Arizona Canal consists of copper domes of various sizes. Water from the canal flows through the domes, which hang in front of backlit panels of frosted glass. The water falls at different depths to create different activity in the domes. 7201 E. CAMELBACK ROAD, SCOTTSDALE

10

SWALE

Attached to the guard rails, 176 powder-coated steel “blades” and “seed pods” greet those who pass by, on, or near this bridge. Created by artist Stacy Levy, the installation’s inspiration was the vegetation that grows in the nearby Indian Bend Wash. The blue blades represent the flowing water that runs through the wash when it rains.

TUCSON STREET ART & MURALS

The self-proclaimed “newest ‘things to do’ in Tucson attraction,” this quirky sign museum—which opened in October 2018—has a collection of neon, hand painted, gold leaf and tin signs from Tucson, Phoenix, and beyond. Features of the museum include a diner, Tucson iconic miniatures, interactive exhibits, and a Retro Room full of vintage signs.

A great Instagram opportunity, Tucson has a variety of murals painted on the side of various structures throughout the city. The Banner – Medicine commissioned four Arizona artists to create five murals around town at 2320 N. Campbell Ave., 3540 N. Oracle Road, 3443 E. Speedway Blvd., 2425 N. Oracle Road, and Fourth Avenue near Eighth Street.

TUBAC

Entering a Wilde Meyer Gallery is a sensory experience. With locations in both Tucson and Scottsdale, a visitor can view changing exhibits of contemporary fine art. Subjects include abstracts, landscapes, figurative, and contemporary Western. Media include paintings, bronzes, sculpture, glass, and more.

A roughly 45 minute drive outside of Tucson, Tubac is an art collector’s haven as the village has become a hub of art galleries with local artists’ paintings of the Western scenery. The Tubac Center of the Arts is also a must-stop for those passing through town, with exhibits in the main gallery featuring a wide variety of art. For sculpture art, K. Newby Gallery & Sculpture Garden has sculptures and a number of different kinds of mediums to indulge in.

THINGS TO DO 2 DATE NIGHT

IN THE VALLEY

3

Bring on the Romance

Stunning sunrises and sunsets, and picturesque scenery, are sure to make any visitor to the Valley fall in love with the destination. But if your visit to the Valley coincides with Valentine’s Day—or you’re just looking for some date ideas that dazzle while you’re in town—these destinations are perfect

LET LOVE BLOOM Marvel at the desert’s unique flora, from towering cacti to alluring succulents and brilliant desert wildflowers at Desert Botanical Garden (www.dbg.org). View more than 50,000 desert plants as you stroll through the many paths at this spectacular destination.

MAKE THEIR HEART SOAR Both Rainbow Ryders (www.rainbowryders.com) and Hot Air Expeditions (www.hotair expeditions.com) offer a bird’seye view of the Valley with hot air balloon tours. Watch as the sun rises or sets during the

48

journey, taking in the landscapes and beautiful skies. Some flights include toasts with champagne or a mimosa, as well as food.

FOR LOVE OF FOOD The Valley is filled with topnotch, romantic restaurants. Different Pointe of View at Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort (www.tapatiocliffshilton.com) is perched 1,800 feet above the Valley atop North Mountain, and it offers breathtaking views from both its floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor patio. Regional American cuisine is served at this AAA four-diamond

W HERETRAVELER ® P HOE NIX +S COTTS DA LE

1 award-winning restaurant. At the family-owned Cafe Monarch (www.cafemonarch.com)—which has been named a Top Three Fine Dining Restaurant in the Nation by Trip Advisor—diners find everchanging options on the restaurant’s four-course, prix fixe menu.

BE A TEAM Work together in a race against the clock to solve a series of challenges in order to “escape the room” at Escape the Room (www.escapetheroom.com). These interactive, real-life escape games put players in a room designed by puzzle designers, theme park engineers, and set designers, so the scenario and “escape” seems realistic.

ADD COLOR TO YOUR RELATIONSHIP At Pinspiration’s Splatter Room™, don protective gear including goggles, shower caps, and robes or coveralls, and get ready to get colorful by splattering paint on your canvas. With the Splatter Date™ package, guests

receive one large or two small canvases to paint in a private Splatter Room, a glow upgrade for two, chocolates, and two glasses of champagne. Pinspiration (www.pinspiration. com) also offers a variety of other craft project options, perfect for a crafty date.

CULTURE The Valley has a variety of museums to explore. Phoenix Art Museum (www.phxart.org) is the largest visual art museum in the Southwest, and current exhibitions include Collective Inspiration, which pairs fashion with traditional art. Collection highlights include Claude Monet’s Les arceaux fleuris, Giverny, as well as You Who are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies, artist Yayoi Kusama’s infinity firefly mirror room. At the Musical Instrument Museum (www.mim.org), explore instruments from around the world, finding your favorite sounds together.
