Dine, Sip, and Tour Perched above the Valley, with stunning views from its historic windows, sits Wrigley Mansion. Constructed in 1932 by chewing gum personality William Wrigley Jr. as a 50th anniversary present to his wife, Ada, the destination now houses Geordie’s Restaurant and Lounge, Jamie’s Wine Bar, and soon, Christopher’s at Wrigley Mansion. The venues are led by James Beard Award-winning Chef Christopher Gross. And the locale—which recently underwent a renovation—has now debuted a reimagined Sunday Brunch, Sundays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There are family-style platters brought to the tables; guéridons roving about the dining room with small plate options; made-to-order, seasonally changing brunch entrées; pastries; and desserts. Need something to sip on? In addition to cava or mimosas, brunch can be paired with one of the more than 1,200 wine labels from the mansion’s wine cellar. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Interested in the locale’s history? Reserve a time for a property tour, available Tuesday through Saturday. 2501 E. Telawa Trail, Phoenix; www.wrigleymansion.com

Night owls can indulge their latenight cravings at Nook Kitchen, which recently debuted a Nook at Night reverse happy hour. Available from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with last call for food at 1:30 a.m., Nook’s craveable eats are rooted in Italian tradition. Chef LaRosa–a past winner of the Food Network’s Chopped–helms the kitchen. The reverse happy hour includes deals on appetizers, salads, and pizza, as well as signature cocktails and draft beers, Tito’s, and red and white wine. A DJ adds to the late night vibe. Late night not your thing? The restaurant also has happy hour Wednesday through Saturday, 5-6 p.m. 4231 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix; www.nookkitchen.com
Pass the Pepper, Please Pepper-flavored vodka? Yes. Scottsdale’s first microdistillery, Blue Clover Distillery, just debuted the bottle launch of its handcrafted, pepperflavored vodka. Blue Clover infuses the vodka locally with three spicy peppers to achieve its natural flavor: hatch green chile from New Mexico, red pepper, and jalapeño. Heard of farm-to-table eats? Here, it’s farm-to-bottle. Distilled with farm-fresh corn, the gluten-free, small-batch vodka uses water from a specialized reverse osmosis system to give it the taste of the fresh waters of the Pacific Northwest. It then passes through a high-quality
charcoal filter and is left to rest. The spirit is smooth enough to sip for those who like it neat, or, it also makes the perfect foundation for a spicy craft cocktail. Available in the bottle to-go, or to drink in the tasting room. 7042 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale; www.bluecloverdistillery.com

Tucked in the desert of North Scottsdale, Taliesin West was the winter home of one of the most innovative and well-known American architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, who was known for his unorthodox and contemporary architectural style. Open for tours, it’s not the only Wrightdesigned location to visit in the Valley. View the Frank Lloyd Wright Spire, a blue and green, internally illuminated spire that glows each evening, rising from the corner of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale. First Christian Church in Phoenix, built in 1971, is another of his designs. The triangular spire reaches 77 feet high, and native stones are blended into the walls. Gammage Auditorium, located on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, was one of Wright’s last publicly commissioned projects. And for the Arizona Biltmore, which opened in 1929, Wright acted as the consulting architect in its design, partnering and collaborating with his former student, Albert Chase McArthur.

AZ FIVE Cs
Celebrating the best in culinary, cocktails, culture, casinos, and craft beer BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
MORA ITALIAN
F
or more than 100 years, Arizona has been known for its iconic five Cs: Copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate. At the time, these AZ Five Cs were created to communicate to the outside world the state’s key economic drivers, and to differentiate it from the rest of the Southwest. All these years later, while each is still part of the fabric that makes State 48 great, we think there are five other important Cs that have helped elevate Arizona to one of the preeminent destinations in the world: Culinary, cocktails, craft beer, casinos, and culture.

As little as 25 years ago, those visiting Arizona likely dined at one or more chain or franchise restaurants during their stays, simply because those were the primary eateries in the area at the time. Fast-forward to 2021, and Arizona is now home to dozens of award-winning restaurants and chefs. In the past year alone, 24 venues were named among the Forbes Travel Guide award-winners, including Talavera, Kai, and J&G Steakhouse, and another 22 were among the James Beard Award semifinalists—notably Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44, Ocean 44, and Citizen Public House. Culinary giants like Scott Conant and Giada De Laurentiis have taken notice, with Conant choosing Phoenix to launch Mora

Chef-driven, local restaurants proudly rule the market today, notably Justin Beckett’s Southern Rail and Beckett’s Table; Stephen Jones’ The Larder + The Delta; Christopher Collins’ Twisted Grove, The Macintosh, Wally’s and The Collins; and the Maggiore family’s Hash Kitchen, Tomaso’s, The Sicilian Butcher, and The Sicilian Baker.

With the culinary renaissance came one amid the beverage industry, as well. There are many that deserve credit for putting Arizona on the cocktail community’s map, including Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlor, La Hacienda and Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, and Jade Bar at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa—which, in the mid-2010s, launched “Bar Brawl.” The annual friendly competition had the region’s top bartending talent competing in a series of challenges, both to find a spirited champion, as well as to elevate the industry both locally and nationally. Today, you can find several past winners, competitors, and those inspired by the series leading cocktail programs at Ladera Taverna y Cocina, which is known for its mezcal-infused concoctions; Bitters Cocktail Bar & Food, which excels at balancing cocktails with bitters; Blue Clover Distillery, which uses its own house spirits to develop its recipes; and Garden Bar, which is headed by James Beard-honored mixologist Kim Haasarud and curates garden-to-glass cocktail experiences.

Resort and Casino, which similarly has new amenities coming this year, including a new restaurant, new bar, and significant renovations to its high-limit lounge, among other enhancements; Harrah’s AkChin Casino, which recently completed a three-year expansion that includes a new lobby, a 12-story tower, a spa, an expanded gaming space, new restaurants, a multi-purpose event center, a parking garage, a new Bingo hall, and a new renamed Laurel Lounge for Caesars Rewards members; Desert Diamond Casinos, which has over 75,000 square feet of gaming space at its West Phoenix locale alone, including the newest slots, table games, a poker room, a bingo hall, and even a wine and spirits shop; and We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort, which opened its doors in October 2020 in place of Fort McDowell Casino and stuns with 850 slots, 22 blackjack tables, a five-table poker room, and a 400-seat, smoke-free bingo hall.
According to the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, there are currently 110 independent breweries producing and pouring beer across the state (accounting for nearly $1.5 billion in economic impact), and in the past two years alone, local breweries took home 12 medals at the Great American Beer Festival. That’s a lot of hoppy news! Be it sours, ales, IPAs, stouts, porters, lagers, or pilsners, there is one or more local beers on tap in town right now just for you. Within Greater Phoenix, do not miss Four Peaks Brewing Company, Huss Brewing, Wren House, Fate Brewing Company, or O.H.S.O. Brewery & Distillery. And for those looking for a little adventure up north, check out the craft beer scene in Flagstaff, which the Arizona governor formally proclaimed as a leading craft beer city with a commendation in 2018. Among the can’t-miss spots just two hours north of Phoenix are Mother Road Brewery, Historic Brewing Company, Dark Sky Brewing Co, Lumberyard Brewing Co., Beaver Street Brewery, Flagstaff Brewing Company, Wanderlust Brewing Company, and Trail Crest Brewing Company. Not sure where to start? Trekking the Flagstaff Craft Brew Trail is easy, thanks to Craft Beer Flag, which offers a map and passport for free. Once the passport is filled, you can exchange it for a commemorative pint glass.
CASINOS In 1988, the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), which recognized gaming as a way to promote tribal economic development, self-sufficiency, and strong tribal government. Today, there are 25 Class III casinos, which to put it in simple terms, means casinos in the vein of Las Vegas in size and games available, operated by 16 different Native American Tribal Communities across the state. Among them: Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass, which recently broke ground on a $143 million expansion project to add an 11-story tower, new rooms, and more; Talking Stick
CULTURE Arizona’s cultural offerings are many. They range from the Heard Museum, which showcases the art and history of the region’s Native American cultures; and Phoenix Art Museum, which is the largest of its kind in the Southwest and features both classic and contemporary works; to the one-of-a-kind and interactive Musical Instrument Museum, which displays instruments from across the globe; and the hands-on Children’s Museum of Phoenix. Given that Scottsdale was once nicknamed “The West’s Most Western Town,” Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is another must and features regularly changing exhibits of Western art and artifacts, entertaining events, and informative programs that bring the country’s Western heritage to life. Even the diverse Sonoran desert is given the chance to shine courtesy of Desert Botanical Garden, which is set on 140 acres of protected land and features more than 50,000 plant displays and nearly 4,500 unique species in its outdoors exhibits. There is also the Phoenix Zoo, the largest privately-owned, nonprofit zoo in the United States.

n the Valley, culture is as plentiful as the seemingly endless blue skies. Make sure to get your fill of everything, from museums to shows to art.
MUSEUMS Those who enjoy history will find lots to explore in the Valley. The Heard Museum (www.heard.org) is internationally recognized for its collections of American Indian art. Founded in 1929, the museum “collaborates with American Indian artists and tribal communities to provide visitors with a distinctive perspective about the art of Native people, especially those from the Southwest.” Meanwhile, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West (www.scottsdalemuseumwest.org) celebrates the West and its regional history. Stop by to view exhibits of Western art, Old West
artifacts, and historic Native American objects. Have you heard of the Miranda Warning? Visit the Phoenix Police Museum (www.phxpdmuseum.org) and view original objects from the case that inspired it, which occurred in Phoenix, as well as other objects from Phoenix’s law enforcement history since 1881. Those more interested in firefighting can head to the Hall of Flame Fire Museum (www/hallofflame.org), which includes almost an acre of fire history exhibits and over 100 fully restored pieces of fire apparatus, dating from 1725-2004. Meanwhile, music is alive in the desert of North Phoenix at the Musical Instrument Museum (www.mim.org), also called “the MIM,” where more than 8,000 instruments from more than 200 world countries are exhibited at this first-of-its-kind destination. And, at the Arizona Science Center (www.azscience.org), learn about everything from weather to flight to dinosaurs.
19
ARTS Of course, there are plenty of art museums, as well, including Phoenix Art Museum (www.phxart.org). Here, view the museum’s collection of more than 20,000 works of American and Western American, Asian, European, Latin American, modern, and contemporary art and fashion design, as well as special exhibits. In Scottsdale, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (www.smoca.org)—affectionately known as SMoCA—is dedicated to contemporary art, architecture, and design. Wander around the Valley and you’ll notice a variety of murals decorating building walls, but if you want to view a selection of monumental outdoor artworks, visit Scottsdale Public Art (www.scottsdalepublicart.org) for a list of works and locations, and map out a route to spend the day exploring them. As well, head to Scottsdale’s Arts District on Thursday evenings for the ArtWalk, where many galleries stay open late to

participate. There are also eight special Gold Palette ArtWalks each year, with artist receptions and live music, and other special activities (www.scottsdalegalleries.com). And, the arts districts of both Scottsdale and Downtown Phoenix also have plenty of galleries to view during business hours (www.rooseveltrow.org).
PERFORMANCES Though many performances are currently virtual, Metro Phoenix has its share of performing arts—Ballet Arizona, the Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Opera, and more. There are numerous venues that host shows, including ASU Gammage, where touring Broadway shows typically grace the stage (temporarily closed). Currently, live shows can be viewed at venues including Scottsdale Performing Arts (www.scottsdaleperformingarts.com), which spans ballet, piano, orchestra, song, and more. JA N U A RY 2 0 2 1

6,500 FEET CLOSER TO HEAVEN Year-round active and scenic adventures on Mount Lemmon take visitors through varied terrain by foot, chairlift, two and four wheels BY ERIC SWEDLUND
I
t’s called Babad Do’ag in O’odham native language and often referred to as part of the Sky Islands, but whatever the name, Mount Lemmon and its surroundings are a paradise of outdoor adventures. In summer, winter, spring, and fall, the mountain hosts hikers, backpackers, skiers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts looking for mountain air and gorgeous vistas. Towering over the northeast edge of Tucson, Mount Lemmon rises to 9,157 feet—6,500 feet above the city of Tucson. And along an easy hour-long drive up the Catalina Highway/Sky Island Scenic Byway, vegetation transforms from saguaro, palo verde, and cholla, to a forest of oak and juniper trees, piñon and ponderosa pines, and then again to fir and aspen. Near the very top is Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, the southernmost ski area in the United States. Skiers and snowboarders flock to the slopes when there’s snow, but the chairlift is a popular attraction no matter the season, says Graham Davies, Ski Valley’s general manager. “We’re 32 miles from the base, and riding a chairlift is 100 percent different than anything you’ll do in Tucson,” Davies says. “We run it every day we’re open and there’s always people on it ... At the top you can see all of Southern Arizona, from Tucson down to the Santa Ritas.” For hikers, the mountains offer more than 150 miles of hiking trails of nearly unmatched variety, from Catalina State Park and the Pusch Ridge Wilderness on the western and southern edges to the peaks of Mount Lemmon and Mount Bigelow.
22
W HERETRAVELER ® P HOE NIX +S COTTS DA LE
Tucson resident Kris LaFleur started hiking on Mount Lemmon as a kid and has been going up on his own for more than 20 years, enjoying quicker day hikes and longer camping and backpacking trips. He lists the Box Spring and Aspen trails among his favorites. And for a longer, more rugged journey, LaFleur prefers the Wilderness of Rock Trail with its picturesque rock formations. “The short hikes and longer trails make it a great, diverse place to get away,” LaFleur says. “For me, it’s a great recharge. In the middle of June when it’s 105 [degrees], I can get in my car and from my front door be at 8,000 feet within an hour, next to a stream in the mixed pine and oak forest. It’s such a unique thing to have a mountain range like this so close to a desert city.” Two-wheeled adventurers also have an array of options on Mount Lemmon. World-class cyclists use the elevation increase of Catalina Highway for training, and mountain bike enthusiasts enjoy the rugged trails. Local Stephen Jordan has done it all, from driving his bike up to ride a quick trail or embarking on the 10-hour, 130-mile roundtrip ride from his house through Redington Pass and up the rough, steep Oracle Control Road on the backside of the mountain. “I’ve ridden pretty much every trail up there over the last 22 years,” says Jordan, who enjoys both mountain and road cycling. “You can spend an entire day up there and be completely happy. It’s a beautiful thing to have.” JA N U A RY 2 0 2 1

USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER
USS_AZ_2C_1
Opened in February 2020, the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River honors the brave US forces who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. As a nation, we are forever indebted to those who serve and give their lives for our freedom and we are proud to honor them and share their stories in these gardens. Located just west of Salt River Fields, the Memorial Gardens includes a piece of the original boathouse from the USS Arizona that stood at Pearl Harbor for 10 years prior to building the memorial that stands at Pearl Harbor today. Learn more about the USS Arizona, December 7, 1941 and the impact it had on so many. The Gardens are open to the public daily, from dawn until dusk.

Raise a glass and celebrate 2021, Arizona-style. Explore some of the state’s wineries, breweries, and a cidery right here in the Valley Michelle Glicksman
ARIDUS WINE COMPANY
This family-owned winery is located in the heart of Southeastern Arizona. Using grapes sourced from Arizona, New Mexico and California, winemaker Lisa Strid seeks to capture the tastes of those regions, creating award-winning wines in its sustainable winery. Aridus Wine Company handcrafts small lots of wines, and has a tasting room in Scottsdale. The tasting room offers the same feel as the winery—it’s adorned with all-natural materials, and reclaimed materials whenever possible. New releases include a 2018 graciano and 2018 montepulciano, and the winery produces a variety of whites, red, and blends. 7313 E. Main St., Scottsdale; www.ariduswineco.com
CARLSON CREEK VINEYARD
1 | Carlson Creek also has a familyowned vineyard in Southeastern Arizona. One of the largest vineyards in the area, it produces
Chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, riesling, muscat, Syrah, sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, grenache, malbec, mourvèdre, and malvasia bianca. Sip some selections at its cozy Scottsdale tasting room, where the walls are adorned with artwork— which is for sale—by local artists. 4142 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale; www.carlsoncreek.com
CIDER CORPS
2 | Started by brothers Jason Duren, Sgt, USMC (Ret.), and Josh Duren as a hobby, this veteran-owned and -operated cidery is now Arizona’s largest craft cidery. The pair began making cider while Jason was recovering from injuries he suffered while in Afghanistan. Today, the cidery and its taproom have an extensive taplist, including its popular Sangin Sangria, Mango Foxtrot, Blackberry Camuleglage, and Private Palmer. Both the cidery and taproom are located in Downtown Mesa. 31 S. Robson, Mesa; www.cidercorpsaz.com
5
LDV WINERY
3 | Co-owners and winemakers Curt Dunham and Peggy Fiandaca began as longtime wine collectors —and launched this estate vineyard and winery in 2008. The winery is located in Southeastern Arizona, with a tasting room located in Scottsdale. Sample some of the award-winning wines—LDV’s selections include viognier, grenache, petite sirah, and syrah, among others—on the tree-shaded patio or inside the tasting room (re-opening mid-month due to renovations). 7134 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; www.ldvwinery.com
MERKIN VINEYARDS
4 | Owned by MJ Keenan—a Grammy Award-winning vocalist for Tool, A Perfect Circle, and the cabaret troupe Puscifer—Merkin Vineyards is an extension of the Caduceus Cellars family. The Merkin Vineyards wines are produced from fruit grown on their 70-acre Buhl Memorial Vineyard in Willcox, Ari-
zona, by MK and his wife, Jennifer, as well as winemaker Tim White. The tasting room in Scottsdale also offers a menu of small bites, shareable plates, artisanal boards, and house gelati and sorbetti. 7133 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale; www.merkinoldtownscottsale.com
PEDAL HAUS BREWERY
5 | This brewery, named Best Brewery in the U.S. by Copa Cervezas de Americas, offers award-winning craft beer, as well as elevated gastro-pub food. The brewery opened in 2015, and has since won more than 33 medals and awards. In fact, its German Dark Lager recently received gold standing in the Dark Lager category at this year’s San Diego International Beer Festival. The brewery and restaurant concept has locations in Tempe and Chandler, with a Phoenix location opening early this year. 730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe and 95 W. Boston St., Chandler; www.pedalhausbrewery.com
