WHERE NOW
Take a Hike
Now that the weather has cooled down, it’s the perfect time to explore the outdoors. For those seeking an easier hike with great scenery, head to Phoenix’s Papago Park and take the Double Butte Loop, which begins in the West Park Parking Lot, and enjoy the red sandstone formations. On the park’s east side, a quick climb takes you to Hole in the Rock—literally, a giant hole in the mountain that frames a view of the Valley. At South Mountain Park/Preserve, take the Mormon Loop to National Trail Loop for fantastic city views. And, there are plenty of trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale as well, but a favorite with both locals and visitors is Tom’s Thumb. A more moderately difficult hike, the trail’s signature formation is a pile of boulders that resembles, yes, a thumb. In North Scottsdale, Pinnacle Peak Park Trail— located in Pinnacle Peak Park—offers a relatively easy climb that’s 1.75-miles each way, and offers views of the Valley and the nearby golf courses and large homes. Those looking for more of a challenge can try climbing Phoenix’s Piestewa Peak, which rises 2,610 feet—making it the second highest point in the Phoenix Mountains. Located in Phoenix Mountain Preserve, the Summit Trail is just over a mile, but is a difficult, steep hike. The reward? Stunning, 360-degree views of Metro Phoenix. And, Camelback Mountain (noted for its resemblance to a reclining camel) offers two trails—Echo Canyon Trail and Cholla Trail—to get to the summit, which is the highest in the Valley. Though iconic to hikers, both trails are difficult. For those who make it to the top, the 360-degree views are breathtaking.

ART, VIEWED IN A NEW WAY American Fine Art—which specializes in the original masters of the 19th-21st centuries, including Picasso, Warhol, Dali, Matisse, and more—has a new view on art. It partnered with ArtVR LLC, a virtual reality art gallery software company, to bring its clients the best of the art world through a virtual world. With this new avenue for previewing and selecting works through virtual reality, American Fine Art offers its collectors the opportunity to see the artwork in a similar setting to that which they would receive when visiting their stunning, 12,000-square-foot Scottsdale showroom. Unlike many virtual art exhibits touted online that are merely a video walk-through of a physical or virtual space, this unique application with ArtVR headsets allows the viewer to truly feel immersed in the artwork. While this innovative technology is great for those around the world, those lucky enough to be in Scottsdale can stop by the destination at 3908 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale and experience it in person. www.warhol.me

The experience, which can be held at his Scottsdale restaurant Stratta Kitchen or an off-site locale, allows guests to chat and learn cooking tips from Stratta in a safe and socially-distanced manner, while enjoying his exquisite food creations. Straight from their success in Tucson, Jason Shelby and Wade Parkins moved their popular store Now or Never to the Valley, opening in Downtown Phoenix. The upscale lifestyle shop curates clothing, furniture, accessories, home décor, and skincare products from fine designers, and independent brands and makers from across the globe, offering a curated selection of unique items. The Arizona-born owners have spent 20 years building relationships around the globe, and are the only store to carry such cult brands as Comme des Garçons, MM6 Maison Margiela, KARA, and

Rachel Comey. They are also the only store in Arizona that sells the iconic Comme des Garçons shoe, perfume, and wallet line in-store. “Our goal is to create a true lifestyle boutique featuring a compelling edit of products from indie brands mixed with well-known designer names,” says Parkins. “The point of differentiation with Now or Never is that the majority of what we carry is exclusive to us, meaning you won’t be able to find it anywhere else in the Valley or even in the Southwest.” 1001 N. 7 PUBLIC ARTWORKS 2 TO VIEW
IN THE VALLEY
A not-to-miss when in the Valley? A look at some of the major public art installations around town. Here, some of our favorites and where to find them.
HER SECRET IS PATIENCE This unique piece is made of flexible polyester netting suspended 38 feet above the ground at Civic Space Park. Artist Janet Echelman was inspired by Arizona’s distinctive monsoon cloud formations, saguaro flowers, and saguaro boots (which form inside a cactus). The sculpture was designed to billow and ripple in the wind, reflecting the iridescent beauty of Southwestern light. 424 N. Central Ave., Phoenix
WATERWORKS AT ARIZONA FALLS At 58th Street and Indian School Road, a restored hydroelectric plant on the Arizona Canal is now a gathering spot. Created by artists Mags Harries and Lajos Héder, the design exposed the gears and floors of the site’s former hydroelectric plant

generator room and framed an outdoor “room” with coolness and the sound of water by diverting small flows of canal water to create a pair of waterfalls. There’s also a footbridge and viewing platform. 5802 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix
LOVE View one of artist Robert Indiana’s famous stacked LOVE statues at Scottsdale Civic Center Park, near the Civic Center Library and City Hall. The large red and blue statue—which weighs 3,800 pounds!—is a popular backdrop for photos. 3806 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale
SOLERI BRIDGE AND PLAZA Renowned artist and architect Paolo Soleri created this unique artwork along the Scottsdale Waterfront. The piece also serves as a pedestrian bridge, solar calendar, and gathering place. The bridge, which is anchored by two 64-foot pylons

with a 6-inch gap between them, is situated at a true north axis, allowing it to mark solar events produced by the sun’s shadow. 4420 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale
ONE-EYED JACK Rising 26 feet high, this painted steel jackrabbit sculpture by John Randall Nelson stands watch on the corner of Marshall Way and Indian School Road, welcoming those who pass by. The sculpture is meant to be a reminder of Marshall Way’s history, as well as a nod to its future, as rabbits have been symbols of rebirth and cleverness. Here, it symbolizes the eclectic, artistic heritage of the area, and the promise of a bright future. 7042 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale
WATER MARK This eye-catching series of five aluminum equine gargoyles created by Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan offers a unique feature—during flooding events,
water pours from the mouths of the horses. Explore the 14-foot sculptures up-close on foot (don’t enter the water), or view them while passing along Indian Bend Road. The artwork is also a nod to the area’s historic McCormick Arabian Ranch. 7605 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale
THE DOORS AND SOUND PASSAGE This installation is two artworks in one. From the outside, there are three massive doors leaning against each other. Titled The Doors and created by Donald Lipski, it is a sculpture of South American hardwood, mirrorpolished stainless steel, LEDs, and steel rivets and strapping. Step inside and you’ll feel like you stepped into a kaleidoscope, with mirrors, multiple reflections, and light reflected from the sky. The experience is enhanced with Sound Passage by Jim Green, which offers a variety of unique sounds. Corner of Scottsdale and Camelback roads
