coffee. Press Coffee, a local coffee shop with several locations around the Valley, now offers a line of specialty coffee beans called Allocation. What really is specialty coffee? It’s a term used to refer to coffee that has scored over 80 points on a 100-point scale by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Specialty coffees are different from commodity coffee—the beans all come from higher elevation regions. Soil, growing conditions, and harvesting are all accounted for to evaluate the green bean. The beans must have minimum defects, and when roasted, produce clean and consistent coffee. The coffee is scored and evaluated on aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, balance, uniformity, clean cup, sweetness, and defects. Press Coffee will release a new line of beans quarterly. The fall release, Kambera Geisha, is now available. It is an extended fermentation gesha coffee from Panama, brought to Press through coffee producer Ninety Plus, which is involved with impeccably growing, processing, and exporting some of the world’s best coffees. It has a velvety body with flavors of blackberry juice, cherry, bergamont, and cognac. $50 per tin. www.presscoffee.com
Fall offers some of the best weather in the Valley. Take advantage of it with outdoor adventures. Grab your hiking boots and head to iconic Camelback Mountain (so named as its shape resembles a camel), which is the Valley’s tallest mountain (www.phoenix.gov/parks), or head to South Mountain’s Holbert Trail, which is regarded as the best trail for petroglyph sightings (www.phoenix.gov/parks). Tempe Town Lake plays host to kayaks, pedal boats, paddleboards, electric boats, and more, as well as fishing activities, with rentals available nearby (www.tempe.gov). Families are fans of Scottsdale’s McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, a 40-acre park which includes multiple play areas, a train that runs around the park, a
carousel, a model railroad, a historic Pullman car, and expanses of grass for fun to last hours (www.therailroad park.com). And although it’s great for families too, you don’t need children to enjoy Phoenix Zoo, where you can view more than 3,000 animals (www.phoenixzoo.com). PRESS COFFEE’S ALLOCATION

Visitors from San Francisco might want to head to Gabriella’s Contemporary American Cuisine for a taste of home. Up until early 2020, husband-and-wife team Anthony and Anna Barr had been living and working there, running two of the Bay area’s largest and most successful corporate catering and event planning companies, Fork & Spoon Productions and Above & Beyond Catering. When COVID-19 hit and impacted large events, the couple decided to use the time to follow a new dream. They picked up and moved to Arizona, launching their new restaurant in Scottsdale. The family-friendly menu features familiar American cuisine, including vegan and vegetarian selections, elevated and executed with the precision of the highly trained Chef Anthony. Choose from appetizers such as the Stuffed Cheese and Bacon Tater Tots; sandwiches such as the Short Rib Grilled Cheese; pastas such as the Baked Creamy Pasta with baby scallops; entrées including the Grilled New York Steak; and more. 10155 E. ZINQUÉ
OLD TOWN TORTILLA FACTORY
French-inspired haute spot Zinqué (pronounced as “zin-kae”) at Scottsdale Fashion Square has an inviting, design-centric spacious patio complete with a fireplace, wooden tables, stylish lounge seating, concrete walls, and green foliage where guests can eat, drink, socialize distantly, and work. At the center of the outdoor oasis is a 30-foot-tall, 22-year-old oak tree that naturally adds shade to the outdoor area. 4712 N. Goldwater Blvd., Scottsdale, www.lezinque.com
Located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, this restaurant calls a historic 75-year-old adobe house its home. The property includes a 1,400-square-foot patio shaded by 100-year-old pecan trees, with twinkling lights, and a fountain—the perfect setting for Southwestern dishes with a Mexican twist. 6910 E. Main St., Scottsdale, www.oldtowntortillafactory.com
ISABELLA’S KITCHEN Overlooking the 18th hole of Grayhawk Golf Club, Isabella’s offers 180-degree views of Camelback and Mummy mountains in the distance. After sunset, strings of twinkling lights dot the night sky from above, and the patio offers fire pits, picnic tables, couches, rocking chairs, and even bar seating both indoors and out. 8623 E. Thompson Peak Pkwy., www.isabellaskitchen.com
BLUE CLOVER DISTILLERY At Scottsdale’s first-ever microdistillery, you can sit on the mister-laced patio and sip a gin or vodka cocktail made with small batch spirits that were handcrafted right on the premises. The patio faces Marshall Way, giving a bird’s eye-view of all the Old Town Scottsdale action, as well as a great view of one of the city’s coolest art installations, the One Eyed Jack giant jackrabbit sculpture by local sculptor John Randall Nelson. 7042 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, www.bluecloverdistillery.com

Opened in 2019, this 1,800-square-foot Old Town Scottsdale patio bar and lounge is on the second floor of Social Tap Eatery, but is meant to serve as a completely different concept. While Social Tap has more of a party atmosphere with a focus on craft beer and scratch-made comfort food favorites, Balcony Bar has more of a date-night vibe with plush lounge chairs, an impressive wine menu, its own DJ booth, and a cozy fireplace. 4312 N. Brown Ave., Scottsdale, www.socialtapeatery.com
PLAZA BAR AT FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS This little piece of heaven located on the patio at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is equal parts swanky, sleek, and endlessly chic. The centerpiece of the venue is a massive square outdoor bar, which is elevated a few steps above the main seating for the venue. Posh oversized patio furniture serves as the primary seating throughout the bar, many with private and semi-private fire pits, and all within a few feet of multiple water features. 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale, www.scottsdaleprincess.com
TWENTY6 LOUNGE AT JW MARRIOTT DESERT RIDGE RESORT & SPA Named because JW Marriott Desert Ridge was the 26th JW Marriott resort property to have opened worldwide, Twenty6’s majestic outdoor patio is nothing less than sheer chic meets casual comfort. Framed by clean, cultured stone walls, a decorative wrought iron trellis, and beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, the expansive patio sparkles with string lights, towering palms, cozy fire pits, and features panoramic views of the resort’s shimmering waterways and lushly landscaped lawn and gardens. 5350 Marriott Drive, Phoenix, www.jwdesertridge.com
ONYX BAR & LOUNGE AT FOUR SEASONS RESORT SCOTTSDALE AT TROON NORTH There are million dollar views, and then there are the views from Onyx, which are priceless. Located at the base of Pinnacle Peak Mountain, and looking southward from North Scottsdale so the entire city is within view, this indoor-outdoor, second-floor bar has the service and sophistication one would expect from the Four Seasons brand, yet a personality all its own. locally sourced cocktails are always on the menu, as well as small plates ranging from oysters on the half shell to Hamachi crudo. 10600 E. Crescent Moon Drive, Scottsdale, www.fourseasons.com
EL CHORRO El Chorro, which sits at the base of Camelback Mountain, is among the most beloved patios in Arizona. Its legacy is just as impressive as its view—it was originally built as the Judson School for Girls, developed by John C. Lincoln (yes, as in Lincoln Road) in 1934 so his daughter, Lillian, could attend school. The school was purchased by Jan and Mark Gruber in 1937 and converted to a restaurant and lodge. Clark Gable, Milton Berle, and other prominent figures visited the lodge in its early days. 5550 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, www.elchorro.com
LADERA TAVERNA Y COCINA From the moment you step into Ladera—though a massive, castiron door—you feel as though you are stepping into another world. The patio is built from rich red bricks and adorned with both modern chandeliers and twinkle lights throughout. Fire pits with outdoor games dot the outer corners of the patio, while the main space features an authentic fireplace that’s lit when there’s a hint of a chill in the air, providing ambiance and natural warmth. The color palette is bright, and definitely gives the feeling of being at a luxe outdoor bar in Cancun, Cabo, or Rocky Point. 8729 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, www.laderaphx.com
LON’S AT THE HERMOSA INN
TIMO WINE BAR Conveniently next door to Ladera, Timo Wine Bar’s outdoor oasis is intimate by design. The entire outdoor space is shrouded in big, lush trees covered with twinkling lights that glow all night long as if in a fairyland… with wine. In the center of the space is a grand fire pit with cushioned oversized seating. In contrast to the Mexican fare of Ladera, Timo focuses on offering a massive wine list, as well as food made in its wood-fired oven. 8801 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, www.timocentral.com

THE SICILIAN BUTCHER The Sicilian Butcher is a neighborhood gem—both in Phoenix and Chandler—that offers expansive patio dining areas with shaded seating, idyllic garden vibes, indoor-outdoor bars, adorned string lights, live outdoor music, and cozy fireplaces for chilly days. It’s perfect for open-air leisure dining, casual Sicilian-style meals, wine sipping, and Italian-inspired cocktails. 15530 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix/3151 W. Frye Road, Chandler, www.thesicilianbutcher.com
VOLANTI RESTAURANT At first glance (or Google), this may seem like a run-of-the-mill regional airport location. But, it isn’t. Instead, Scottsdale Airport’s open-to-the-public restaurant and patio lounge is a feast for the senses, with sweeping views of the McDowell Mountains coupled with the sights and sounds of jets coming and going, and elevated takes on both craft cocktails and contemporary dishes including

Plus, the Old Town Scottsdale location tempts with two separate dining patios, including a lush, verdant back patio, and a red brick-lined front patio with a fireplace. 3815 N. Two words: basil foam. But, that is getting a bit ahead of ourselves. As the name suggests, The Americano’s Versace on the Floor is a work of art. First, the vodka is infused for days with both serrano and Fresno chilies. Once perfectly piquant, the vodka is mixed with a combination of coconut white balsamic and mesquite honey. After being strained into a sleek, tall coupe glass, it is time for the elegant basil foam, made using fragrant oil and egg white, and a garnishment of fresh basil. It is sweet, savory, spicy, and perfectly tart in every sip. $17; 17797 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, www.theamericanorestaurant.com
FALL SHRUB AT MARCELLINO RISTORANTE
Both with its food and drink menus, Marcellino Ristorante is wholly focused on authenticity and seasonality. As such, throughout the fall and winter months, the team strives to utilize ingredients representative of an autumnal harvest on the cocktail menu, hitting all of the right notes with this beauty. Here, a marvelous mix of zesty cranberries—slow-simmered for hours—tangy vinegar, and sweet brown sugar come together perfectly with pomegranate vodka, coarsely ground apples, and even a hint of mint leaf to provide a burst of fall in a glass. $15; 7114 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale, www.marcellinoristorante.com
ZUZU MANGO TANGO AT ZUZU
ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho serves up nearly a dozen colorful
cocktails at its stylish, mid-century modern space. Like the venue itself, expect eclectic, funky, and a lot of playful fun. For a modern take on a distinctly Arizona sip, consider the ZuZu Mango Tango. Patron Tequila is the base spirit here, but this is not a margarita, as one might assume. The tequila has a special friend in this recipe called Agavero, which is an ultra-premium and ever-so-smooth spirit made from a blend of 100% blue agave añejo and reposado tequilas, as well as a flower called the damiana. It also has crave-worthy mango puree that gives a freshness in addition to sweetness, as well as lime for acid, and a glass rimmed with spicy Tajin for an added kick. $14; 6850 E. Main St., Scottsdale, www.hotelvalleyho.com
HUCKLEBERRY MARGARITA AT ROARING FORK
A local favorite for decades, this signature of all signature cocktails is frozen, but so popular that it is available all year, even when there is a chill in the air. It starts seemingly basic with the standard mix of tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice. And then the magic happens, courtesy of a magic purple elixir in the form of huckleberry sauce that’s made in-house. This longtime guest favorite combines the flavors of the Southwest with a nontraditional twist—the huckleberry sauce. The frozen margarita has a definite kick, encompassing the bold taste of tequila, triple sec, and freshly squeezed lime juice, topped with a sweet swirl of huckleberries. Similar to a blueberry but with a lot more punch, the distinct flavor once the sauce is swirled into the margarita is often imitated, but never duplicated. $8; 4800 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, www.roaringfork.com

THE ENABLER AT CLEVER KOI AND ACROSS THE POND
CEREAL SHOOTER FLIGHT AT HASH KITCHEN
While home to an epic build-your-own bloody Mary bar, do not sleep on the cereal shooter flight. As the name suggests, it is a flight of four cocktails each made in homage to a beloved cereal. As full of nostalgia as flavor, there is a Cinnamon Toast Crunch shooter made with spiced rum and Horchata; a Froot Loops shooter with fruity vodkas; a Cap’n Crunch shooter with mouthwateringly delicious peanut butter whiskey and hazelnut liqueur; and finally a Cocoa Puffs shooter, made with chocolate vodka and espresso liqueur. Each cereal shooter starts with a coconut milk base and finishes with whipped cream swirls and sprinkles of cereal bites. $16; four locations throughout Scottsdale and Phoenix, www.hashkitchen.com
THE ENABLER AT CLEVER KOI AND ACROSS THE POND
The Enabler is the signature house cocktail at both Clever Koi and Across the Pond. From day one, it has been their bestselling and most beloved recipe. Modified from a whiskey sour, The Enabler starts with high proof American bourbon, and is mixed with grilled lemon juice, robust Grade B maple syrup, a pinch of smoked Maldon sea salt, and four drops of Bittermens Burlesque Bitters. The cocktail is boozy, yet incredibly balanced—the addition of maple syrup and grilled lemon make this a much more robust and
savory alternative to a traditional sour take. $12; Clever Koi has locations in Phoenix and Gilbert, www.thecleverkoi.com/ 4236 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, www.acrossthepondphx.com
ABRI-CA-LAV-RA MIMOSA AT SNOOZE
Snooze makes it a point to be anything but a snooze when it comes to cocktails. Among its most popular offerings is the Abri-ca-lav-ra Mimosa. It starts with Girrard Abricot Du Roussillon Liqueur, both delightfully aromatic and delicately sweet. To open up the bouquet, it is then combined with both honey and lavender-infused simple syrup. The ingredients are shaken with ice and then poured into a coupe, before getting topped with Snooze Sparkling, the venue’s own brand of bubbly. This aromatic and slightly sweet treat awakens all the senses. $10.50; locations across the Valley, www.snoozeeatery.com
PUNCH DRUNK LOVE AT OAK & FORK
Let’s start with the garnish: it’s a gorgeous fresh orchid. If that isn’t reason enough to order this chic signature sipper at Harrah’s Ak-Chin’s Oak & Fork, how about the combination of both Deep Eddy Cranberry and Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka inside, which is shaken and combined with pineapple and orange juice before being served in an elegant wine glass? Refreshing and a bit tropical, yet still perfect for the season thanks to the hit of cranberry and orange, it tastes as good as the orchid that poses atop the glass looks. $10; 15406 N. Locally owned restaurants offer not-to-be-missed culinary experiences
DURANT’S One of Phoenix’s most historic family-owned restaurants, Durant’s is the storied restaurant opened by former Flamingo Hotel pit boss James E. “Jack” Durant in 1950 and now run by his business partner Jack McElroy’s daughter, Carol McElroy. The location, which offers steak and seafood, has been the site of many a power meeting, and hosted names such as Joe DiMaggio, Clark Gable, John Wayne, and Dizzy Dean—to name just a few. Enter through the back door, which takes you into the kitchen, and be ready to embrace the red décor of the famous dining room. 2611 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, www.durantsaz.com
PERSIAN ROOM For more than 30 years, the Persian Room, locally owned by Nasser Nikkhahmanesh, has been serving Persian cuisine in its fine dining, yet casual, destination. The décor includes ornate chandeliers, finely carved pillars, and delicate water fountains, while the menu features beef, chicken, lamb, and a variety of vegetarian dishes. 17040 N. THE SALT CELLAR RESTAURANT A Valley landmark since 1971, owners Richard and Cindy Huie are adamant that consistency, quality, fair prices, and great service are the key to success. Customers agree, flocking to this popular spot. Set in a unique underground location, The Salt Cellar Restaurant is known for its fresh seafood—including the always-available whole Maine lobster. A busy bar offers a wide range of liquors, wine, and beer, as well as a robust array of appetizers. 550 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, www.saltcellarrestraurant.com
THE STOCKYARDS The Stockyards, Arizona’s Original Steakhouse, first opened its doors in 1947. Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by Gary Lasko. In addition to menu selections such as corn-fed, aged steaks and prime rib, the location still features much of its famous charm. From the tin ceilings to the red oak hardwood floors, to the walls covered in historic photos and Western art, the destination—which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places—continues to celebrate its colorful history and the characters that shaped Arizona’s cattle industry. 5009 E. Washington St., Phoenix, www.stockyardssteakhouse.com

ORGAN STOP PIZZA In 1972, the original Organ Stop Pizza restaurant premiered in Phoenix, with a Wurlitzer pipe organ that was originally built for Grauman’s Hollywood Egyptian Theater. The concept of a pizza parlor with a pipe organ was envisioned by William P. Brown, whose enthusiasm for the theater pipe organ and its music led to the creation of this landmark attraction. Brown later retired, and Organ Stop Pizza, which is now located in Mesa, is owned by Brad Bishop, Jack Barz, and Pat Rowan—all former employees of the restaurant. There’s pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and ice cream, although the showstopper is the Mighty Wurlitzer, the largest and finest theater organ in the world today. Its nearly 6,000 pipes, numerous percussions, and countless traps are masterfully presented by the musical staff who are world-class musicians. 1149 E. Southern Ave., Mesa, www.organstoppizza.com

Larry Foles and Guy Villavaso wanted to open a restaurant that reflected the values and hospitality of their Southern Roots—and so Roaring Fork was born. The restaurant captures the spirit of bold American cuisine, creating flavors that crackle with a rugged edge. In the Old West, the best food was prepared on a simple wood fire. This same spirit, freshness, and flavor are at the heart of every dish served at Roaring Fork. Select from lamb, chicken, beef, pork, and fresh fish entrées, all perfectly prepared by wood fire rotisserie, open flame grill, or wood oven roasting. 4800 N.
