A Sports Bar, Elevated

The new hot spot The Ainsworth Phoenix takes “swanky sports bar” to a new level. Case in point—the locale’s popular 24k Gold Wings, chicken wings made with golden chipotle bbq sauce, gold flakes, top-shelf bleu cheese, and served alongside carrots. The Ainsworth—which took over the old Hard Rock Cafe spot on the corner of Second and Jefferson streets, across from the Phoenix Suns Arena—is a sports bar, restaurant, and private event experience offering a sophisticated twist on classic American fare favorites and signature cocktails, all with an elevated lounge feel. Although The Ainsworth has locations in several other major cities nationwide, this Phoenix location is its first in Arizona. The Ainsworth Phoenix’s design reflects the high-energy atmosphere and eclectic interior the destination is known for, while incorporating favorite elements and menu items from the local restaurant The Lola at Westgate (the two locales now have the same owners) to create a distinct new experience. 3 S. 2nd St., Phoenix; www.theainsworthphx.com

And, Vertuccio Farms (www.vertucciofarms.com) in Mesa features the Valley’s longest-running corn maze, as well as a pumpkin patch, attractions, and a petting zoo. Those with young ones can head to Halloween Town’s Pumpkin Patch (www.halloween townaz.com), which features a pumpkin patch, games, and rides geared toward those ages 2-8. LOCAL

Libations

A

ccording to the American Distilling Institute, the number of distilleries across the United States has jumped

from less than 200 to more than 2,000 since 2010, with several of the most spirited of spirit makers right here in Arizona. Here are some of our favorite locally made libations.

O.H.S.O. ARCADIA MEYER LEMON VODKA

Whiskies at SanTan Spirits, an extension of the Chandlerbased brewery launched in 2015, are a point of pride as each varietal is curated from two to four years using E’Levage, a time-intensive process that allows each batch to breathe deep into the wood for maximum flavor infusion. The difference that this process makes is exceptionally obvious with this new offering—a sweet, smooth blend of premium whiskies, cinnamon liqueur, and real maple syrup.

In the years since O.H.S.O. debuted its Arcadia line of vodka—ranging from rosemary to coffee to horseradish—the nano-brewery has grown exponentially, adding a larger-scale distillery and opening sister locations statewide. Distilled with sugarcane and fresh Meyer lemon peels, this bright and crisp vodka with a candied tart fi ish and hint of meringue makes the brand’s success crystal clear. $25 AT WWW.OHSOBREWERY.COM

BLUE CLOVER GIN The first-ever micro-distillery in Old Town Scottsdale focuses on adding modern twists to its spirits. Case in point—the key botanicals in this gin are blood orange, rose, and peach rather than a heaping of more traditional elements such as juniper, coriander, anise, or lavender. The result is flo al yet clean, and still slightly herbaceous. $25.99 AT WWW.BLUECLOVER DISTILLERY.COM

ADVENTUROUS STILLS ABSINTHE VERTE

WHISKEY DEL BAC DISTILLER’S CUT

Much like chefs focus on farm-to-table dishes, Adventurous Stills focuses on grain-to-bottle distilling. The Tempe craft distillery, which was founded in 2015, uses 70% of locally grown grains in its products and makes everything by hand in the distillery using two handfabricated, all-copper stills. This first-of-its-kind Arizona absinthe explodes with coriander, chamomile, and spearmint, offering a robust herbal profile appealing to absinthe novices and aficionados alike.

Founded by a Tucson furniture designer who used mesquite wood in his work to showcase the native Arizona plant, Whiskey Del Bac is made by malting barley, which is at the core of the whiskey-making process, over mesquite wood to achieve what the founder calls a “mesquited, not peated” flavor profile. The Distiller’s Cut, bottled at cask strength, is a limited edition off ring that varies slightly from batch to batch and seas on to season. When a new bottle releases, run—don’t walk—to get your hands on one.

GRAND CANYON DISTILLERY CINNAMON FIRE THUNDER SNOW When Northern Arizona’s Grand Canyon Brewing launched a distillery in 2017, it wanted to create spirits that stood out. An extension of its ultra-popular white corn whiskey, this warming winter winner is made by adding habanero and vanilla to the traditional recipe, and then steeping real cinnamon sticks in batches during the aging process for a dreamy depth of fl vor. $65 AT WWW.GRANDCANYON BREWERY.COM

he Valley is known for many things, including sunny days, cacti, golf courses, resorts, its food culture—but it’s also the location of many venues that are rumored to be haunted.

PHOENIX

Orpheum Theatre Phoenix The Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Phoenix was built in 1929 and originally used for vaudeville acts. Today, the historic building is still used for shows and events... but not all of its guests are said to be alive. It is said that several ghosts have made themselves known at the Orpheum, though none more than Maddie, who likes to hang out on the balcony. 203 W. Adams St.; www.pccticketing.com

The Rosson House This Victorian house was built in 1894-1895 and still sits on its original foundation in Downtown Phoenix near the Arizona Science Center. The restored home is now a museum that can be toured. Guests can explore the living areas of the home and get a glimpse into the lifestyles of early Phoenix families—as well as potentially hear unexplained footsteps and feel warm temperatures coming from empty fireplaces, antics thought to perhaps be from a caretaker who was killed outside of the home in the early 1980s. 113 N. In 1928, the grand Hotel San Carlos opened for visitors. Over the years it has hosted celebrities and notables. But just over a month after the hotel opened, a woman named Leone Jensen checked in. On her second night, Jensen wrote a number of letters—including directions for her funeral—and jumped off the hotel’s roof. Since her death, a number of people have reported seeing a woman in white around the property. She’s been spotted on the staircase of the seventh floor, and some guests describe seeing her standing at the foot of their bed, staring at them before disappearing. Although she’s the most famous Hotel San Carlos ghost, there have also been reports of a little girl sitting and crying, and voices of children laughing—possible supernatural vestiges of the city’s first school, built in the late 19th century where the hotel now stands. 202 N. Central Ave.; www.historichotelsancarlos.com

Pioneer Living History Museum Here there are 26 historic 19th-century buildings on 90 acres, including the original homes of people who helped tame the Wild West. The structures were moved from all over the state—some say with their own ghosts, too. There have been reports of children singing in the old schoolhouse, figures emerging from the Opera House, sudden blasts of cold air, and the touch of unseen hands.

Opened in February 2020, the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River honors the brave US forces who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. As a nation, we are forever indebted to those who serve and give their lives for our freedom and we are proud to honor them and share their stories in these gardens. Located just west of Salt River Fields, the Memorial Gardens includes a piece of the original boathouse from the USS Arizona that stood at Pearl Harbor for 10 years prior to building the memorial that stands at Pearl Harbor today. Learn more about the USS Arizona, December 7, 1941 and the impact it had on so many. The Gardens are open to the public daily, from dawn until dusk.

Great Hikes and Parks

eady to get out and explore nature? Try these great spots around town. MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN

The iconic Camelback Mountain— so called because its shape resembles that of a reclining camel—is a popular hiking destination. Two trails lead to the summit, which sits 2,704 feet above sea level. Both are challenging, with uneven terrain and steep elevation gains. Make it to the top and be rewarded with stunning views of the Valley. Echo Canyon trail: McDonald Drive east of Tatum Boulevard, Paradise Valley. Cholla trail: 64th Street and Cholla Lane (north of Camelback Road), Scottsdale. www.phoenix.gov/parks

INDIAN BEND WASH GREENBELT

This park, traversing 11 miles, offers plenty of room for recreational activities or relaxation. Lakes, parks, paths, golf courses, and more are perfect for walking,

40

biking, and sports. Multiple entry points, Scottsdale. www.scottsdaleaz.gov/parks

MCCORMICK-STILLMAN RAILROAD PARK

This 30-acre park is typically a draw for its popular train that runs around the perimeter of the park, multiple playgrounds, Model Railroad Building, and more, but there is also lots of grass for outdoor play, as well as plenty of ramadas and picnic tables available. 7301 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale. www.therailroadpark.com

MCDOWELL SONORAN PRESERVE Explore 30,580 acres of preserve via 225 miles of trails throughout Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. There are seven trailheads, and the trails range from easy with a 0-foot elevation

gain, to moderate with a 2,500-foot elevation gain. www.mcdowellsonoran.org

PAPAGO PARK

Papago Park is not only home to the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden, but the mountainous area offers exceptional trails, perfect for hiking, running, and mountain biking. There’s also a fishing pond, archery range, orienteering course, and more. The easy Hole-in-the-Rock trail provides the opportunity to peek through a, well, big hole in a rock. 625 N. Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix. www.phoenix.gov/parks

PIESTEWA PEAK

Various trails offer routes ranging from moderate to difficult at this mountain. The Summit Trail gains an elevation of 1,200 feet and takes you to the second highest peak in Phoenix (Camelback Mountain is the highest). Located in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Multiple entry points, Phoenix. www.phoenix.gov/parks

Located in Pinnacle Peak Park, Pinnacle Peak is an easy to moderate hike with a trail that is 1.75 miles each way. There is also rock climbing within the park open to experienced rock climbers with appropriate gear. 26802 N. 102nd Way, Scottsdale. www.scottsdaleaz. gov/parks

TEMPE BEACH PARK

Tempe Beach Park, which borders Tempe Town Lake, offers a range of recreational options, from baseball diamonds to bike lanes; fishing; grills; five miles of trails for walking, biking, and running; and ramadas and picnic tables. Mill Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe. www.tempe.gov

VETERANS OASIS PARK

This 113-acre park features a fishing lake, trails for hiking and horseback riding, a playground, an environmental education center, and more. 4050 E. Chandler Heights Road, Chandler. www.chandleraz.gov Always remember water and sunscreen when outdoors.
