BRUNCH AT MAPLE & ASH
Start your morning in a big way with restaurants that make sure your breakfast is anything but boring. At Maple & Ash (7135 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; www.maple andash.com), stop by on Sundays for the new IDGAF brunch option (there’s also a regular brunch menu). For $100 per person, sample some of the restaurant’s most popular menu items, like the Fire Roasted Seafood Tower, bottomless beverage service, and surprises along the way like caviar or champagne. At Hash Kitchen (locations in Scottsdale, Chandler and Phoenix; www.hashkitchen.com), find items such as Fruity Pebble Poppin’ Pastries, as well as the Filet Mignon, Peppers & Onion Frittata. Pair your choice with one of the locale’s famous Bloody Marys. New to High Street is The Boozy Breakfast (5450 E. High Street, Phoenix; www.the boozybreakfastaz.com), which offers breakfast classics, along with—you guessed it—a lengthy cocktail menu.

For stunning scenic views of nature, hop aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Wilderness Route this year. Dubbed “Arizona’s longest-running nature show,” the railroad offers a scenic adventure which takes passengers between stunning high-desert red rock pinnacles and a rare riparian venue along the famous Verde River. Opened in 1990 along the historic Verde Valley Railway line, the railroad was launched by a husband-and-wife team who were so inspired by the area’s scenery that they wanted others to be able to experience it as well. Verde Canyon Railroad originally opened with a handful of midcentury passenger cars and flatcars, made into open-air viewing cars. Over the years, the cars—and depot—have been upgraded and new additions have been added. So have new experiences, including the fall’s Ales on Rails beer-tasting trip, the summer’s Grape Train Escape wine-tasting, and December’s Magical Christmas Journey. 300 N. JEEPING Exploring Sedona’s Red Rock terrain via destination jeeping BY STACEY WITTIG | PHOTOS BY ISAAC ARJONILLA
CHEF CHARLEEN BADMAN
THESE CUSTOMIZED JEEPS WERE DESIGNED TO TAKE HIKING TO THE NEXT LEVEL—OR, AS THE HIKE HOUSE CALLS IT, “DESTINATION JEEPING.”
W
hen Sedona hiking expert Greg Stevenson hands you the keys of a customized Jeep rock crawler, he’s not giving you the keys to a vehicle, but rather the keys to some of the best hiking in the region. “We want to take hikers to the next level, but it’s difficult if you can’t get to the trailhead,” explains the author of The Sedona Hiking Guide Book and owner of The Hike House in Sedona. To help hikers get to remote Arizona trails, Stevenson and his wife, Gracie, curated a fleet of customized Jeeps—sometimes called rock crawlers—built for Sedona’s Red Rock terrain. When you rent one of the stunningly detailed vehicles, you get the keys, GPS guidance to the trailhead, and a customized hiking itinerary.
TAKING HIKERS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
The Hike House in Sedona has been taking hikers to the next level for the past 10 years with guided and self-guided hikes. Using a computer tool called Sedona Trail Finder, developed by Stevenson and Gracie, The Hike House experts can input your hiking ability and comfort level into a database of over 150 trails. The Sedona Trail Finder then filters the hikes to provide a shortlist of the perfect trail experiences for you. First-time visitors are often surprised by the number of trails that are condensed into the Sedona Red Rocks area, and by the various levels of hiking that are found there. “It’s unfortunate that people come to Sedona and miss the best spots,” says Stevenson, who helps novice hikers navigate their fears and concerns. “Not many people are aware that if you can walk, you can hike here.” Trail experts rate 80 percent of Sedona’s trails as easy or moderate, and designate 20 percent of the trails as difficult. Many trails take only two to three hours to complete, and are marked with easy-to-follow signage.
25
“We try to crescendo people,” says Stevenson about working with intermediate and advanced hikers, whom he calls Global Adventurers. “We start them out at their ability and comfort level, and then stretch them to the next level.” The next level for hikers with any ability could be driving a customized 4WD Jeep to a remote, or not-so-isolated trailhead. During busy times of the year, front-country trailhead parking lots clog, and a 4x4 vehicle is needed to access backcountry trails.
DESTINATION JEEPING
The Hike House Jeep rentals come with a 60-page printed road atlas, which reveals how to get to those trailheads. The full-color guide contains photos and hiking tips to help you discover your own unique experiences. The guidebook outlines 30 different

adventures—not all are 4x4 routes, but each points you toward a unique experience. Further, once you get into the off-the-charts customized vehicle, 60 routes are pre-programmed on the easy-touse, built-in GPS. Once inside the Jeep and on your way to the trail, you’ll want to open the state-of-the-art canopy roof system. Get closer to the Sedona Red Rocks looming overhead with a one-touch Black Sunrider Soft Top. The canopy peels back automatically to reveal all the views for hikers in both the front and rear seats.
RUGGED LUXURY
An off-road customization company in Texas modified the vehicles—2020 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicons—for Sedona’s unique topography. SEPTEMBER 2020
CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Exploring the terrain; hiking in Sedona; Gracie and Greg Stevenson of The Hike House stand by one of the company’s customized Jeeps.
“We built Jeeps that can take on anything,” says Stevenson. “They’ve got 4- to 5-inch lifts with 37-inch tires, so there’s no terrain that these Jeeps cannot handle.” Rubicons are already Jeep’s beefiest model for off-road performance with performance suspension, heftier front axles and low-range transfer cases. Nevertheless, customizers upgraded the suspension to keep the vehicle stable both off the road and on the highway. And with Jeep’s new 8-speed automatic transmission and turbocharged engine, The Hike House Jeeps are sure to take your hike to the next level. Electronic steps automatically slide out when you open the door— important for vehicles lifted to get over rocky step-ups. A custom heat induction hood keeps the motor cool—and looks cool with stylized detailing. Creature comforts include Bentley leather heated
front seats, heated steering wheel and room enough for five hikers. The vehicles, modified for safety, comfort and performance, meld modern technology with Jeep’s impressive traction. Built-in GPS navigation software keeps you on course. Three hundred LED rock lights in the undercarriage optimize off-roading during dark hours. And all the while, Pioneer 8-speaker sound systems with dual amps and 10-inch subwoofers set the mood for whatever hiking adventure is in store. Stevenson assures that there is no need to be an off-roading aficionado, as these beauties are designed for the novice and expert, and a “Jeep Concierge” assists with itineraries based on your skill set. “The vehicles are really a crossover from rugged to luxury,” says the hiking expert. “These Jeeps allow people to take hiking to the next level. We call that ‘destination jeeping.’”

the only one of the seven natural wonders of the world located within the United States. It is 227 miles long, and averages 10 miles wide and one mile deep. It was carved over the past six million years by the action of the Colorado River.

the only place on earth where the iconic saguaro cactus grows. They can live to be 150-200 years old.
3 Guests can visit the actual
London Bridge while in Arizona. The bridge originally spanned the River Thames in London, England. When it was offered for sale in 1967, Robert P. McCulloch, Sr. purchased it for $2.4 million and had it dismantled and shipped to its current home, stretching across a channel of the Colorado River in Lake Havasu City. The purchase included ornate lamp

7 Arizona’s “Five Cs” are
Arizona? The bola tie, so declared in 1973. A bola tie (sometimes referred to as a bolo tie) is a type of necktie consisting of a braided leather cord with decorative metal tips, secured with an ornamental clasp or slide. Strongly associated with Western style, it’s typically made by silversmiths and leather makers, and often features turquoise.
5 Arizona has 18 national
monuments—more than any other state. These include Canyon de Chelly, Montezuma Castle, Organ Pipe Cactus, Petrified Forest, Sunset Crater Volcano, Vermilion Cliffs, Ironwood Forest, Agua Fria, and Chiricahua.

8 The famous Miranda Warning (“You have the right to remain silent”) began with the arrest of Ernesto Miranda in Phoenix in 1963, and the court case that would follow. The desk where he was fingerprinted, the sign used to take his booking photograph, the chair he sat in for it, and a full and expansive showing of documents related to the case, along with interviews and articles on the key players in the case, are on view at the Phoenix Police Museum.
9 The Hoover Dam, completed in 1935 and named after President Herbert Hoover, is
considered an engineering marvel—the water collected at the dam can supply two million acres with water. Tour passageways and tunnels inside the giant dam, walk on top of it, and even take an elevator 530 feet down to the bottom.
10 Arizona’s state fossil is
petrified wood—wood that used to be trees (many around 225 million years ago), but over a long period of time became petrified and hard as a rock. View large amounts of petrified wood in the Petrified Forest in the northern part of the state.
11 In 1930, Pluto was
discovered via the telescope at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Lowell Observatory offers numerous ways and events to observe the skies, and the telescope used for the Pluto discovery is still housed there as well.
